Here’s how to unsend messages on facebook messenger

Excellent news, everyone: the future is finally here. No longer will you have to suffer the embarrassment of immediately regretting a Facebook message you sent with no way out except to just stare at the stupid message and try to will it to come back to you with your eyeballs. Now you will be able to unsend Facebook messages, according to The Verge.

The new feature has actually been in the works for a while — after it was discovered that Mr. Mark Zucks himself had the ability to unsend messages last year. “It’s similar to the power that CEO Mark Zuckerberg infamously has to delete messages he’s sent, as we first found out last April, after multiple sources noted that messages they received from the CEO had mysteriously disappeared,” The Verge explains. “When questioned, Facebook confirmed Zuckerberg’s messages expired over time, citing increased security measures after the 2014 Sony Pictures email hacks.” But people were not happy about it. “After people found out that Zuckerberg (and, presumably, other executives) could delete messages but the average user couldn’t, they called out Facebook for providing preferential treatment to higher-ups.”

Which makes sense, because if you know that the power to delete exists then it definitely doesn’t seem fair if only your boss can use it — and, on a more personal note, you’d want to try to use it to save yourself from foot-in-mouth disease immediately, right? So as soon as this was made public, Facebook announced that it was developing an “unsend” feature for everyone — and nine months later, that feature has arrived to make Messenger a better place.

How does it work? Well, you have 10 minutes after you send a message to “unsend” it. Within those 10 minutes, you’ll see a “Remove for Everyone” option and a “Remove for You”. Unfortunately, even if you use the “Remove for Everyone” option, it doesn’t disappear completely — it’s replaced with a notification that you’ve removed, so the other people within the message will know you deleted something. Still, it’s better than having the shame of your typo staring you right in the face for all eternity. On another note, it’s great that Facebook illustrated the new feature with a bunch of screenshots of someone accidentally sending a totally innocuous message about dinner that was meant for their partner to a group of friends instead — the function will never be used so purely in the real world. Ever. It will be reserved for the deeply cringe-worthy and totally inappropriate. Exclusively.

You should be able to start using the new feature right away. Facebook told The Verge that it should be functional on the latest Messenger app version, whether you use iOS or Android. Whether or not it will save you from the embarrassment of messaging your ex at two in the morning and then deleting it — well, only time will tell.

Though the rumors have been flying for several months, it’s so good to see that the “unsend” feature has finally arrived to save us from ourselves. There are a lot of different reasons you might want to “unsend” a message on Facebook — maybe you sent an ill-advised, drunken message to an ex or maybe you realized that the Nigerian Prince may not actually need your bank details. Either way, you now have 10 minutes to make a change. Even though the fact that other people can see when you’ve removed a message still does open you up to potential embarrassment, it’s definitely an improvement. I’ll take it.

It’s now simple to remove that embarrassing typo or cringe comment.

Ever made comments in a chat on Facebook Messenger that you wish you could unsend? Well, now you can.

Facebook has introduced a new feature that will let you delete any message so long as you do so within 10 minutes of sending it. The option works both in regular messages as well as in group chats.

The new feature is easy to use and only requires a few steps. Here’s how to unsend in Facebook Messenger.

How to unsend in Facebook Messenger on mobile

First, press and hold the specific message you wish to unsend. A menu should appear at the bottom of your screen offering three options: Copy, Remove, and Forward.

After selecting Remove for Everyone, you will be presented with the following message: “You’ll permanently remove this message for all chat members. They can see you removed a message and still report it.” Confirm your decision by pressing Remove.

And just like that, your embarrassing typo or cringe comment has disappeared! As previously stated, the recipient of your now-deleted message will be informed that your comment was removed. And don’t forget, the new unsend feature only works if your message was sent 10 minutes ago or less.

How to unsend in Facebook Messenger on desktop

The process works similarly on desktop, but instead of pressing and holding the message you’d like to unsend, you’ll click the three horizontal dots, which will bring up the option to Remove.

After that, you’ll be greeted with a screen presenting your two options: Remove for Everyone and Remove for You.

Facebook’s new unsend option was introduced following last year’s discovery that CEO Mark Zuckerberg had his own personal messages removed from their recipients’ inboxes without their knowledge. In response to criticism that the company was giving preferential treatment to Zuckerberg, Facebook announced that the unsend feature would be on its way

If you trying to clean up your account, here’s how to delete a Facebook page , delete a Facebook comment , delete all Facebook messages , and delete photos from Facebook . Of course, you can always permanently delete Facebook , but there’s no coming back from that.

Last year, it was revealed that Mark Zuckerberg had an option to “unsend” messages that were sent on Facebook Messenger. Once that info came out, everyone who uses Messenger wanted in on the functionality too—and now Facebook is delivering.

So, to be clear, the current “delete” option on Facebook Messenger only removes the message for you—the recipient can still see it. That also means it’s still on Facebook’s Messenger servers. The Unsend feature, by contrast, will allow users to completely remove the message as if it never happened.

Of course, there’s a catch: it’s limited to a small, 10-minute window. That means you won’t be able to run back through old messages and unsend anything you want, which is both a bummer and a logical move. Still, if you say something and immediately regret it, you’ll be able to unsend it starting today. Here’s how.

It’s a pretty straightforward option: just long-press on the message. You’ll get the normal reaction emoji just above message, as well as some options down below: Copy, Remove, and Forward. This replaces the Copy, Forward, Delete options that have historically been present here.

Here’s how to unsend messages on facebook messengerTechCrunch

Tapping the Remove option will then offer two options: “Remove for Everyone” and “Remove for You.” Pretty self-explanatory here, but if you tap the “Remove for Everyone” option it will unsend the message. The latter option will function in the same way the current Delete option works.

While it hasn’t been confirmed yet, this should work the same way in Messenger on the web: hover over a message, click the ellipsis menu button, then choose the Remove option. We’ll confirm this once the feature is available for us to use.

And that’s all there is to that. This functionality will start rolling out today to everyone.

For most of 2018, Facebook was working behind the scenes to create a Facebook Messenger unsend feature which would allow you to permanently delete messages you’ve sent to others from both your side of the conversation and theirs. The unsend feature is live now in the Facebook Messenger Android mobile app.

Below, we’re going to show you how the feature works. However, before we get into that, you need to know about the limitations present within Facebook Messenger unsend. Although this new tool will be helpful for retracting messages you regret sending, it will not be nearly as powerful as you might have expected it to be.

The biggest limitation with Facebook Messenger unsend is that you only have a 10-minutes-long window to delete your messages. Once that 10 minutes is up, the message is stuck in the conversation permanently.

Here’s how to unsend messages on facebook messenger

Another limitation is that you can only delete messages you have sent. This means if you send a message you regret and the person sees and responds to it, you can only delete the original message you pushed. In other words, the person’s response — which could make it clear what your original message said — will stick around forever, unless they decide to delete it as well within their own 10-minute window.

Finally, although you’ve deleted the message, Facebook still holds onto it for an unannounced length of time. This policy is to prevent bullies from sending nasty messages, deleting them, and then there being no proof the message was ever sent. Facebook did not disclose how long messages will be stored on the server but did say they will eventually be deleted.

How to use Facebook Messenger unsend

With all that in mind, here’s how the process works in the Android app. Check out the screenshots below for more help!

  • First, tap and hold on the message you want to delete to bring up the various options you have for that message.
  • Tap the “remove” option to bring up the secondary menu of remove features.
  • You’re given two options, which are each pretty self-explanatory: Remove for You and Remove for Everyone.
  • Tap the one you like, confirm, and the message vanishes from both sides of the conversation.

When you remove the message, a “tombstone” will be left where the message appeared in the thread. This can’t be removed and each party will see it (consult the screenshots above to see the “tombstone”).

Here’s how to unsend messages on facebook messenger

Ever since it was reported that Mark Zuckerberg had retracted messages from users’ inboxes, Facebook began to work on a feature that would let the everyday Facebook user do the same. Last week Facebook finally launched a feature that allows users to remove messages for everyone in the chat, not just for yourself. Since the user has 10 minutes to delete the message, I wanted to see if it was possible to intercept the messages before they got deleted so I can read them even after they were removed from my chat.

If you r e call from my last article, I was able to temporarily bring back the Thankful reaction by hooking into Facebook’s own React components and injecting my own code via a Chrome extension. After inspecting and reverse engineering the React components for Messenger, I was indeed able to intercept new messages and recover deleted messages using the same procedures. I present to you: Unsend Recall for Messenger. How does it work? Well, simply put, it intercepts new messages you receive and saves them to the browser’s local storage. If someone deletes their message, it will retrieve it from local storage and show it. Simple, right? But technically speaking, how does it work? Let me explain below.

First things first, let’s inspect the DOM node of a removed message, then switch to the React tab in React Dev Tools to see the component.

Here’s how to unsend messages on facebook messenger

As you can see from the screenshot above, the React component that renders a removed message (“You removed a message” on the left) is called MessengerRemovedMessageTombstone. Sounds about right… RIP message 💀⚰️

If you search “RemovedMessageTombstone” in the Sources tab, you’ll find the source code for the module that is responsible for rendering the content inside a removed message as seen in the screenshot below.

Here’s how to unsend messages on facebook messenger

It looks like the ‘ getTombstoneContent’ method returns the text that is rendered inside the MessengerRemovedMessageTombstone component. By requiring the RemovedMessageTombstone module, we can override the getTombstoneContent method and return whatever we want instead. If we have the deleted message already saved in local storage, we can just return it in this method and it will be rendered in the chat window. But how do we intercept and save messages anyways?

If you scroll up in the same source file, you’ll come across a module called MercuryThreadInformer which has a method called informNewMessage.

Here’s how to unsend messages on facebook messenger

It turns out the informNewMessage method does exactly what it sounds like it does — it informs you whenever you receive a new message. Even though the parameters of the function are obfuscated as ‘a’ and ‘ b’, you can see that the inform method maps threadId to ‘a’ and message to ‘b’, so we know that the second parameter, ‘b’ is the object of the new message. We just need to override the informNewMessage method and write our logic to persist the message in local storage.

Now that we are successfully intercepting new messages and saving them to local storage, we can go back to our getTombstoneContent method hook and return the message from local storage if it exists. And just like that, we are able to see messages that people have removed by letting our Chrome extension do all the hard work. As long as we have Facebook or Messenger running in the browser, if someone sends us a message and then removes it, we will be able to see what they actually said.

Are you ready to start recalling what your Facebook friends’ removed messages say? You can install the Chrome extension from the Chrome Web Store:

You can unsend a Facebook message within 10 minutes of sending it. The version 191.0 release of Facebook Messenger supports the unsend feature, so you must upgrade the app for it to work.

The Facebook unsend feature may not be available in all regions.

Why Would You Want to Unsend Facebook Messages?

Let’s say you just sent a message you instantly regretted, or you accidentally sent a personal message to the wrong person. Until 2018, delivered Facebook messages could not be unsent or removed from the recipient’s inbox. Now, you have 10 minutes to take back your words, GIFs, emojis, or anything else you sent to an individual or group of people.

After 10 minutes, you can delete the message from your outbox, but the recipient still has it in their inbox. In the future, Facebook says it plans to let users set expiration dates for messages and conversation threads.

Can People Still See Unsent Facebook Messages?

Facebook users see messages sent to them instantly, so unsending a message doesn’t prevent the recipient from seeing it. If you send a message and automatically unsend it, the recipient might receive a notification that you sent a message, even though they can’t read it.

As part of its mission to prevent cyberbullying, Facebook administrators can see unsent messages for a short period of time in case a message is reported for policy violations. When someone unsends a message, the message is replaced by text indicating the message was removed. That way, you can report users for harassment by tapping the sender’s name, then selecting Something’s Wrong in the Facebook Messenger app.

Facebook announced it would add a feature to its Messenger apps that would allow users to unsend a message. There was no real ETA on when the feature would roll out but the feature has now rolled out to all users, worldwide. You can unsend messages on Facebook Messenger within a certain time period. Unsending a message allows you to remove a message from both your and your recipient’s side however, it does leave a trace.

Here’s how to unsend messages on facebook messenger

Unsend messages on Facebook Messenger

This feature is available on the Facebook Messenger apps for both iOS and Android. Make sure you update the app to the latest version that’s available.

Open Facebook Messenger and send a message. Tap and hold on it until you see the reaction bar. At the same time, you will see a bar appear at the bottom with options to copy, forward, and remove or delete the message. Tap the Delete or Remove option (whichever one you get).

A menu will open listing two options; Remove for everyone, and Remove for you. To unsend the message, you need to tap Remove for everyone. This will remove the message from both your side and from your recipient’s side.

Here’s how to unsend messages on facebook messenger

The message being unsent isn’t going to leave without a mark. Your recipient will know that a message was removed from the conversation. The feature, like those similar to it on other messaging apps, has limitations. For example, you will find that you cannot go back and unsend older messages. There is a limit to how old a message can be for it to be unsent. If a message is too old, you cannot unsend it.

It also goes without saying that just because you can unsend a message doesn’t mean that your recipient will not have read/seen it before you get the chance to remove it. They may take a screenshot of it as well before it’s removed so remember that unsending isn’t a fix for bigger messaging problems.

WhatsApp has a similar unsend feature which allows you to unsend messages that are no older than 7 minutes. There’s no word on how old is too old for a message to be unsent on Facebook Messenger but you can take a hint from WhatsApp and expect similar time limits.

It’s interesting to note that the feature was initially something that was used internally at Facebook to protect its executives’ communication from leaking. It was only when this information became public that Facebook announced it would roll out the feature to other users as well.

Ever sent a Facebook message you ended up wishing you hadn’t? If you have, you know that the torment is just overwhelming, especially if you sent it to someone you have to face on a regular basis.

Luckily for you, there might just be a solution to this—a way out which would effectively save you from the desperation that comes when you are trying to recall your message right after you see that blue text-filled bubble slowly disappear.

It appears that Facebook has finally answered your calls. If you didn’t know, you’ll be able to effectively recall your messages on Facebook Messenger all thanks to the new “Remove” feature they have just recently introduced. The feature is first being rolled out in Poland, Bolivia, Colombia and Lithuania. It will be released globally soon.

The Remove feature comes only a short while after WhatsApp, another chat platform owned by Facebook, afforded its many users the luxury and convenience to delete messages within a limited time frame of sending them.

This ability to retract messages from your Facebook Messenger is particularly useful if you accidentally send an unintended text to any of your contacts and then have to the resulting awkward conversation later.

Having said so, below is a comprehensive step-by-step guide that takes you through the process of unsending a Facebook Messenger message:

How to Use Facebook Messenger’s New ‘Remove’ Feature

Firstly, note that the following steps require the latest Messenger App version. As such, start by first updating your Messenger App to the newest release that is available on your app store.

If you’re using an Android phone, you can do this by heading over to the Google Play Store on your device and then proceeding to “My Apps & Games.” Once you are here, go to the “Check for Updates” option and then search for the Messenger App and click “Update Messenger.” (Play Store > My Apps & Games > Check For Updates > Update Messenger)

After you have updated your Messenger App to the latest version, here are the steps that you need to take to unsend your Facebook Messenger message:

  1. Launch the Messenger app on your device.

Here’s how to unsend messages on facebook messenger

2. Open the app, and then open a chat window. Type a text and then hit “send.”

Here’s how to unsend messages on facebook messenger

3. Go to the message you have sent and long-press on it to highlight it.

  • Note: This option only works within 10 minutes of sending the text; so be sure to do it as soon as you realize that you need to retract your message.

Here’s how to unsend messages on facebook messenger

  1. Located along the bottom part of your device’s screen, look out for the “Remove” option and then click on it. A resulting prompt will ask you whether you want to “Remove for You” or “Remove for Everyone.”
    • Note: The first option will only delete the texts on your side of the view of the said message or conversation while the latter option will allow you to erase the message or chat from all the named recipients.
    • Once you click on the “Remove for Everyone” option, the text you had earlier sent will be deleted both for you and also for the recipient. A placeholder text will inform the recipient of your original text that you have retracted a message in place of the place where the initial text originally appeared on their screen.

Here’s how to unsend messages on facebook messenger

As earlier mentioned, your text can only be unsent if you follow these procedures within 10 minutes of sending the text. The ability of the app to unsend your message will expire if you do it later than 10 minutes after sending it.

Facebook Messenger the Latest App to Incorporate the Feature

If you are impressed by this new feature, you will be pleased to know that there are other apps besides Facebook Messenger that afford you the ability of deleting a sent text.

WhatsApp, for instance, also allows you to retract conversations, as mentioned above.

Other apps that boast a similar feature include Instagram, which enables you to unsend DMs, as well as Snapchat, which has incorporated its “Clear a Conversation” feature just recently.

It is essential to understand that simply because Facebook Messenger or any other app affords you the ability to unsend or delete a text, it does not mean that the recipient cannot read your text. In the case where a recipient receives a notification for the text you have sent and proceeds to open it immediately, not even this feature can save you from such.

What’s important, however, is that you take your time to double-check your texts before sending them. Only hit that send button when you are sure about everything you want to communicate through as well as what you have typed. In case you have even the slightest doubt, don’t send the text.

So, whether you sent a text on your Facebook Messenger immaturely or subsequently littered your text with typos, you can now rest easy (at least for 10 minutes) as the chat app now allows you to delete these texts after having already hit send.

By following these steps, you can effectively save yourself the embarrassment or an awkward conversation by effectively retracting your message. With this new “Remove” feature, Facebook Messenger helps you rectify a mistake which you may not have noticed before when sending a text.
