How to add music to instagram stories

Last week, Spotify introduced a new feature that people are absolutely loving. As of May 1st, 2018, you can share Spotify music directly to your Instagram story. Gone are the days of taking screenshots of songs or albums that you’re currently digging to post on Instagram – now you can do it directly from the Spotify app. Plus, the direct share to Instagram feature looks a whole lot better than the old way of simply posting a screenshot on your Instagram story.

How to add music to instagram stories

Not only does the Spotify share to Instagram Stories feature look better than a screenshot, but it also links directly to that particular song, album, or playlist on Spotify. This means that anyone who views your Instagram story can click directly through to Spotify and listen to the music that you’ve shared. This can be useful for both sharing your favorite music with your friends and promoting your music as a musician. The best part about this Spotify feature is that it’s incredibly easy to use.

Sharing Spotify songs on your Instagram story has currently only been implemented to the Spotify mobile app and thus is not available on the desktop version, so if you want to use this feature, you’ll have to download the mobile app. I’m sure you’ve already got the app, so read on to figure out how to utilize this feature and add Spotify songs to your Instagram story.

Step 1: Tap the “More” icon on a Spotify track or album

How to add music to instagram stories

First off, open the Spotify app and navigate to the music you want to share to your Instagram story. Then look for the “More” icon (the three dots), and give it a tap. The icon could be in a few different places depending on what Spotify interface you’re looking at, but regardless it isn’t hard to find.

Step 2: Tap the Share button

After you tap those three dots, you’ll be brought to a menu that offers several options for what you might want to do with this Spotify track. They’re all useful in their own right, but obviously the one you’re looking for is “Share”. On the iOS app, the Share button is about halfway down. Give it a tap.

Step 3: Share to Instagram Stories

How to add music to instagram stories

The share button expands into yet another menu offering a delicious selection of sharing capabilities. The one you’re looking for, labeled “Instagram Stories”, should be located near the top of that menu. Tap that button and your Spotify app should open Instagram, allowing you to share music to the story of whatever Instagram account you’re currently logged into. Share that baby on your Instagram story and your followers will be able to tap through to Spotify and listen for themselves.

There you have it: the definitive guide to sharing your Spotify music to Instagram. If this guide doesn’t work for you, try updating your Spotify app.

How to add music to instagram stories

Instagram Stories are easy to make, but they can require a lot of thought if you want to make them truly entertaining. Thankfully, Instagram offers a number of tools to help make your stories as fun as possible.

Maybe you’ve got some great photos or videos and some cool filters and stickers to layer on top, but your story is still missing one important factor—music. Instagram offers a selection of tunes from its own library and your favorite music streaming services, like Spotify, SoundCloud, and Shazam. Here’s everything you need to know about music and Instagram.

Add Music in Instagram

You can add music directly to your story using Instagram’s library. Tap the plus (+) icon at the top of the app, then scroll to Story on the bottom navigation bar. You can also long-press Your Story and tap Add to Your Story or swipe to the right to open your camera, then select Your Story after the photo or video is captured.

At the camera screen, snap your photo or video. You can also swipe up to see your photo library, then select what you want to add. Apply whatever filters or special effects you want. When you’re ready to add a tune to your story, tap the Sticker icon and then tap the Music sticker.

At the Music screen, browse through the different sections and genres to find a tune. You can also use the search field at the top of the screen to search for particular music by song, artist, or album. Spot a song you like? Tap the Play button to hear a short clip.

When you’re ready to make a selection, tap the song you want in your story. You will have the opportunity to scroll through the song and decide what sound clip (up to 15 seconds) will play over your story. Move the slider bar until you find the section you want added.

Some songs offer multiple images from which you can choose, so tap the music thumbnail to change the image. Some even offer lyrics that appear on the screen as the music plays. When you’re happy with the image you’ve chosen, tap Done and the song is added to your story in the form of a sticker.

Once you’ve finalized your music selection, the song appears as a sticker in your story. You can choose where the sticker will be placed in your story by moving it around the screen with your finger. Change the size of the sticker by pinching or expanding two fingers. Use two fingers and twist to change the orientation of the sticker.

Don’t like the look of your sticker? Double-tap it to return to the previous screen, where you can change the appearance of the sticker. Tap Done to return to your story.

If you’ve recorded a video, you can do even more with your sticker before you post the story. Hold down on it and you’ll be able to pin the sticker to a specific person or object in the video. This means the sticker will move along with the object as it moves in the video.

When you’re done tweaking the music, tap the Your Story icon to publish your story with music. Alternatively, if you want only specific people to see it, you can either tap Close Friends to send it to a custom group of people, or tap Send To and select which users should get it.

To view your story, tap the Your Story icon. Your story appears with the music automatically playing. Tapping the song label pauses the music and brings up a window at the bottom through which you can save the music or send it to another person on Instagram. Your followers can view your story and play the music in the same way.

Add Music From the Spotify App

You can add music to your Instagram story by grabbing it from the Spotify app. With a song playing in Spotify, tap the ellipsis icon and choose the Share option. Tap Instagram and you’re taken to your Instagram story, where your selected song appears with its cover art. You can add text, stickers, and other effects to your story. Tap the Your Story icon to post the story with the song you selected.

Once your story has been posted, it will serve as a link back to Spotify. Tap the Your Story icon in Instagram to view it. Anyone who views your story can tap Play on Spotify, and then Open Spotify to launch the song in the app.

Add Music From the SoundCloud App

Share a song from the SoundCloud app to your Instagram story by selecting a song and choosing Share. Select Stories to import the song and its associated image into Instagram.

Once the story has been published, it will serve as a link back to the song on SoundCloud. View the story, tap Play on SoundCloud, then select Open SoundCloud to open the song in the app.

Add Music From the Shazam App

While Shazam is primarily used to analyze and identify songs you’re already listening to, you can also get the app to play music and send it to Instagram. Open the app and allow it to recognize a song that is currently playing.

Tap the song in Shazam, then tap More and Share. Tap the Instagram option to send the song and its artwork to the Instagram app. After the story has been published, you can travel back to the Shazam app through Instagram. To do this, open the story in Instagram and tap the Open Shazam button to play the song in the app.

Why Can’t I Add Music to My Instagram Stories?

When the music sticker was first introduced, it was only available in “select countries”, including Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, Sweden, the UK, and the US.

The feature has since been rolled out even further, with Canada being added to the list in 2020.

If you’re not in one of the countries with access to the music sticker, unfortunately, there’s not much you can do other than sit tight right now.

If you live in a country where the feature is available but doesn’t appear to be working as you’d expect, it may be due to one of these reasons:

You need to update your app. Instagram frequently rolls out new updates, so you may be simply using an older version!

You’re using a business account. Due to licensing restrictions, business accounts may have a selection of royalty-free songs instead of more popular options. You could switch to an Instagram creator profile instead.

How to add music to instagram stories

You’re sharing a branded content ad. Instagram’s rules state that branded content ads should avoid GIFs, emojis, music, and more than one sticker.

It’s unknown when other countries will have access to the music sticker, and if Instagram’s licensing restrictions will change for business accounts, but we’ll keep you updated.

How to add music to instagram stories

Instagram Stories are there to let you communicate in a variety of ways with your followers, and share less polished pictures and videos.

IG Stories can also be great places to share the music you’re listening to – your followers are always looking for new tracks and new artists, and people often post screenshots of their favorite music to share with their friends.

Even better: you can add music directly to your Instagram Story, whether it’s a photo or a video, and give your followers a preview of your playlist. Here’s what you’ll need to do:

  1. Find the song and the photo or video you want to add to your story
  2. Add the song to your photo or video in the Kapwing Studio
  3. Download your video and share it on your Story

Step 1: Find the song and the photo or video you want to add to your story

To post music on your Insta story, you’ll need to have a photo or video to go with your audio. When you use Kapwing to add music, you can use photos or videos from almost anywhere. You copy the link to a video on YouTube, record one on your phone, or find your video from nearly any source on the web.

How to add music to instagram storiesFirst, you need to upload a photo or video to Kapwing, as a backdrop for your music.

You can also use a photo as a backdrop for your audio track. Screenshots of an album cover, “now playing” screen, or tracklist work well for sharing your music, and they let your friends find the music you’re sharing easily. For this example, I simply took a screenshot of my playback screen in Spotify.

Step 2: Add the song to your photo or video in the Kapwing Studio

Now, navigate to Kapwing.com and click “Start Editing.” This will take you to the Kapwing Studio, where you can click “Upload” to import the photo or video file you chose, or paste the link to the video you found online.

How to add music to instagram storiesImport the song you want to share to the Kapwing Studio.

Give Kapwing a few seconds to upload your video. Once it’s fully uploaded to the Studio, choose “Audio” from the toolbar along the upper edge of the screen. Now you can upload your music track the same way. Kapwing supports uploads from all kinds of music locations – YouTube, SoundCloud, Google Drive. For my example, I just copied the link to a music video on YouTube and pasted it in Kapwing’s Audio window. If you want to use a specific part of the song to get your friends interested immediately, click “Trim Audio” and drag the sliders to frame the portion that you want to share.

Step 3: Download your video and share it on your Story

When your musical Instagram story is fully edited and ready to go, just hit “Publish” in the upper right-hand corner of the Studio. Give Kapwing a few seconds to process your video, and press “Download” once it’s done processing. If you’re running iOS on your device, you’ll need to download the small Kapwing app from the App Store – it allows you to organize all your Kapwing files, store them for free in the cloud, and save them directly to your camera roll.

How to add music to instagram stories

With your video saved to your camera roll, open Instagram and tap the “Your Story” button on the left of the Stories bar. Choose the Photo library button in the lower left corner and find your musical story – it should be the most recent thing in your camera roll. Once it’s selected, you can add any edits you want using the Instagram Story tools, or you can share it directly to your followers, music and all!

How to fix Instagram music

If you want to get music back, all you have to do it change your profile from a business account to either a personal or a creator one. A creator profile has most of the same features that a business profile has, so you won’t really notice the difference.

To do this, go to settings and tap ‘account’. Then, scroll down and press ‘switch account type’.

However, some people have reported that even after changing their account back to personal or creator, the music still doesn’t work. If this is the case, here are some things you could try:
