How to add screensavers to ubuntu 12.04

Ubuntu 12.04 doesn’t ship with any screen savers, just a black screen that appears when your system is idle. If you’d rather have screensavers, you can swap gnome-screensaver for XScreenSaver.

Screensavers were actually removed back in Ubuntu 11.10. Ubuntu uses gnome-screensaver and inherited the change from upstream GNOME. The GNOME developers think a black screen that puts your monitor into lower-power mode is optimal.

Installing XScreenSaver

First, fire up a terminal from Ubuntu’s Dash.

How to add screensavers to ubuntu 12.04

Next, run the following command to uninstall gnome-screensaver:

sudo apt-get remove gnome-screensaver

Install XScreenSaver and some additional screensaver packages with the following command:

sudo apt-get install xscreensaver xscreensaver-data-extra xscreensaver-gl-extra

Configuring Your Screensaver

After installation, perform a search in the Dash for Screensaver. Launch the Screensaver utility and use it to configure XScreenSaver and select your screensaver settings.

How to add screensavers to ubuntu 12.04

The Screensaver utility will prompt you to stop the gnome-screensaver process and launch the xscreensaver background process when you start it.

By default, XScreenSaver will choose a random screensaver each time it starts. You can specify the screensavers it chooses from or enable “Only One Screensaver” mode to always use your favorite screensaver.

XScreenSaver doesn’t embrace gnome-screensaver’s minimalism — many XScreenSaver screensavers offer a large amount of options you can tweak by clicking the Settings button.

Adding to Startup

To actually use the screensavers, you’ll want XScreenSaver to start in the background each time you log in. If it doesn’t start, it can’t notice your system is idle and launch screensavers.

Get started by launching the Startup Applications utility from the Dash.

Replacing Lock Screen

Unity calls gnome-screensaver when you click the Lock Screen option in the system menu or use the Ctrl+Alt+L keyboard shortcut. To lock your screen with XScreenSaver, you can create a custom keyboard shortcut that calls XScreenSaver instead.

First, open the Keyboard utility from the Dash.

How to add screensavers to ubuntu 12.04

Click the Shortcuts tab, select the Custom shortcuts section, and click the + button. Specify the following command for your custom shortcut:

Click the word “disabled” after creating your custom shortcut and key in your desired keyboard shortcut when the words “new accelerator” appear – Ctrl+Alt+L is the default shortcut that locks your computer. If you use the default combination, you’ll be prompted to reassign it away from the default gnome-screensaver shortcut.

How to add screensavers to ubuntu 12.04

Use the keyboard shortcut whenever you want to lock your system. Unfortunately, the Lock Screen option in Unity’s system menu doesn’t work with XScreenSaver.

Reverting Your Changes

Reverting these changes is simple. Just run these commands to uninstall XScreenSaver and reinstall gnome-screensaver:

sudo apt-get remove xscreensaver xscreensaver-data-extra xscreensaver-gl-extra
sudo apt-get install gnome-screensaver

If you reassigned the Ctrl+Alt+L keyboard shortcut, go back into the Keyboard configuration window, delete your custom shortcut, and reassign Ctrl+Alt+L to the Lock screen option under System.

Ubuntu’s developers plan on writing a new screensaver system to replace gnome-screensaver and adding it to Ubuntu by default. In the future, installing XScreenSaver will not be necessary.

no, you don’t have to uninstall gnome-screensaver, and install xscreensaver. You can just go to System Settings -> Brightness and Lock to setup the idle time of gnome-screensaver. The gnome-screensaver can put your LCD monitor into low activity mode so it is the best for your monitor.

Radu’s answer is a good one so I won’t duplicate it. I will point out extra steps recommended by the xscxreensaver developer. I’m also including a short paragraph of history from the developer.

USING GNOME OR UNITY

  1. Fully uninstall the gnome-screensaver package.

    sudo apt-get remove gnome-screensaver

  2. Launch xscreensaver at login.

Select “Startup Applications” from the menu (or manually launch “gnome-session-properties”) and add “xscreensaver”.

  3. Make GNOME’s “Lock Screen” use xscreensaver.

    sudo ln -sf /usr/bin/xscreensaver-command /usr/bin/gnome-screensaver-command

That doesn’t work under Unity, though. Apparently it has its own built-in screen locker which is not gnome-screensaver, and cannot be removed, and yet still manages to be bug-addled and insecure. Keep reinventing that wheel, guys! (If you have figured out how to replace Unity’s locking “feature” with xscreensaver, let me know.)

  4. Turn off Unity’s built-in blanking.

    Open “System Settings / Brightness & Lock”;

    Un-check “Start Automatically”;

Set “Turn screen off when inactive for” to “Never.”

Disclaimer

I do not agree with the strong language of the developer but felt it better to include the history rather than hide it.

Ubuntu 18.04 special notes

Many have complained when locking screen with Ctrl + Alt + L external monitors blank instantly and those with dpms are switched off. This causes unwanted delays when unlocking screen. Using xscreensaver will circumvent that particular problem.

You can decommission the Ctrl + Alt + L shortcut from gnome-screensaver and assign it to a new command for xscreensaver :

And then I could change it in the control center -> screen saver options.

Now there seems to be no other option to change the default screen saver.

Background

The Gnome 3 Devs dumped the old gnome-screensaver . The replacement screensaver is just a blank screen.

The Canonical Devs thought it was a useful idea to continue and raised a blue-print for implementation in Oneiric.

A few ideas were raised such as a Compiz specific implementation or reusing a Lubuntu/Xubuntu screensaver implementation.

However, at the time of writing, no implementation has been started.

Potential workaround – installing xscreensaver

Now remove gnome-screensaver

Now start the xscreensaver configuration tool – from a terminal:

If you want to manually lock the screen with the keyboard combination CTRL + ALT + L then you will need to run the following to repoint the old gnome-screensaver lock to xscreensaver

How to add screensavers to ubuntu 12.04

How to add screensavers to ubuntu 12.04

Kør derefter følgende kommando for at afinstallere gnome-screensaver:

sudo apt-get remove gnome-screensaver

sudo apt-get install xscreensaver xscreensaver-data-extra xscreensaver-gl-extra

How to add screensavers to ubuntu 12.04

How to add screensavers to ubuntu 12.04

For at faktisk bruge screensaverne, vil du have XScreenSaver til at starte i baggrunden hver gang du logger ind.

How to add screensavers to ubuntu 12.04

How to add screensavers to ubuntu 12.04

sudo apt-get remove xscreensaver xscreensaver-data-extra xscreensaver-gl-extra sudo apt-get install gnome-screensaver

How to add screensavers to ubuntu 12.04

Screensavers are beautiful for desktops and should be available to everyone as part of their preferred OS. However, if you are Ubuntu user, you might be noticing a blank screen for screensaver. This is because, in recent past, post GNOME 3, the developers decided to drop the screensaver and keep a blank screen.

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS is the latest Linux distribution by Ubuntu. Its Beta version is already out and number of users have started using it on pretty big scale.

The very first thing that people look for when the switch to new operating systems are alternate programs to the software they have been using on their previous OS. So, if you have been using Photoshop previously, then here is the list of alternatives to Photoshop on Ubuntu.

I have rather labelled this list as 5 best free Photo editors for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, as that is what this compilation is all about.

Sometimes you have to leave your computer but don’t want to leave your session open for someone else to start using.

One option is to log out, the other is to lock your session. Logging out is rather drastic and requires you to save all your work. Locking the screen allows all your work to remain as is until you unlock the screen.

1) Press Ctrl + Alt + L to lock your screen.

NOTE: pressing Ctrl + Alt + L means: simultaneously hold down the Ctrl key and Alt key, then press the L key as though you intend to type it.

DO NOT press the Shift key because Ctrl + Alt + Shift + L is different from Ctrl + Alt + L .

It does NOT matter if your Caps Lock key is on or off.

Your screen should change to something like the following (your choice of desktop background, username, etc, will affect the specific appearance):

What do I do if this doesn’t work? Since I upgraded from 11.10, I can’t lock my screen any more.

Interesting question, I have not experienced this problem – so it is hard for me to offer an answer if I can’t reproduce the problem.
I do have some guesses though. One possibility is that GNOME 3 (the window manager beneath Unity) is looking for the keyboard shortcuts in a different location than GNOME 2 (the previous window manager) was.
Unfortunately, when you click on the System Icon (little gear) in the top right corner, it will show that Lock Screen is mapped to Ctrl+Alt+L. I think this is a bug – the displayed shortcut seems to be hardcoded into the menu instead of being dynamically read from some configuration file (I could be wrong, but this is what I have observed the past few minutes testing scenarios for your issue).
Next, you can check to see what shows up in System Settings->Keyboard->Shortcuts->System for Lock Screen. The easiest way to access the Keyboard configuration is to type keyboard into Dash and select the app.
Select the Shortcuts tab. Then select System from the list int eh left hand side.
If it shows Lock Screen is mapped to Ctrl+Alt+L, then I would suggest mapping it to a different shortcut – say Ctrl+Alt+Shift+L.
Close the keyboard app and try out the new shortcut.
If it works, then I would open the keyboard app, remap the shortcut back to Ctrl+Alt+L and close the keyboard app and try it again.
If it works this time, it means that the upgrade from 11.10 -> 12.04 somehow missed your keyboard shortcut settings.
This is one of the problems I find with Linux, settings are stored all over the place and it is not always obvious which ones you are using. It could be (I am guessing) that at some point you had installed a different window manager in 11.10 to replace Unity and it had its own place to store keyboard shortcuts. When you upgraded to 12.04, it didn’t pick up those shortcuts.
Let me know how things work out because I am curious.
Thanks for your question.

The menu item doesn’t work either. It’s not a keyboard shortcut problem, it just doesn’t do anything when you select “lock screen”.

This is one of those annoying problems because “it works on my computer”.
This site, suggests the problem is that gnome-screensaver is not installed.
When I uninstalled gnome-screensaver I was able to reproduce your problem (although, there may be other reasons why locking the screen does not work).
To install gnome-screensaver either:
(1) enter it into the Ubuntu Software Center search field and select to install it or
(2) enter the command sudo apt-get install gnome-screensaver in a terminal.
I’ll be honest, I do not find it the least bit intuitive that a screensaver should be responsible for locking the desktop.
Please let me know if this fixes your problem (and thanks for the comment).

Yes, thanks for this tip – installing the gnome screen saver fixes the problem with the lock screen command – it works now.
As a work-around, I had created a user called “Lock Screen” and then selected that from the user switching menu. A real hack, but it worked until I realized you had solved my problem with your comment. Thanks again – my regular Lock Screen works again – Yay!

Awesome! I am glad it worked. Of course, it begs the question, “why does the screen saver get uninstalled in some cases?”
An inventive hack, but … I wish Linux worked better sometimes and didn’t always need little hacks and tricks to get it to do what you want.
