How to automatically delete your youtube history

Coming Android 10, Google has made a lot of changes to Android (the name being populous). Other significant changes were gesture navigation, local machine learning, dark mode, etc. But in my opinion, the biggest changes were on the privacy front.

In Android 10, apps can only access your location when it’s running. And not only that, Google brought activity manager, ads personalization on top of the settings menu. Now, they also allow you to automatically delete your web location search history, web activity, app activity, search history, and YouTube history right from your phone. Well, here’s how you do it.

Auto-Delete Delete Your Entire Google Activity

There is no unified portal or webpage to delete all your Google Activity at once. We will have to setup auto-delete for Web & App Activity first which comprises Google Assistant recordings, Google Chrome search history, and Android App activity. Next, we will have to setup auto-delete for YouTube activity separately.

This will clear your Google Activity throughout your Google devices like Google Home, Chromebook, Android Phone, etc.

1. Delete Google Web & App Activity

In Android 10, Google has now created a separate Privacy section in the Android Settings menu. Open the Settings menu and tap on the Privacy option.

How to automatically delete your youtube history

This privacy section lets you access the Permission manager, Google Location History, Ad settings, etc under one screen. In the Privacy menu, tap on Advanced and then tap on “Activity controls” through the extended menu. In case you have multiple accounts logged in on your Android, it will prompt you to select one of them.

Under the Activity controls menu, you will see your Web & App Activity, Location History, and YouTube history. As of now, you cannot set automatic deletion for location history but you can do the same for Web & App activity and YouTube history. For that, tap on “Manage Activity” under the Web & App Activity section. It will redirect you to your Google activity web page.

How to automatically delete your youtube history

On your Google Activity web page, scroll down to the link “Choose to delete automatically”. Tap on it and you will be redirected to another web page which will present 3 options to you. The first one is “Keep until I delete manually” which was present earlier. But, the other two “Keep for 18 months” and “Keep for 3 months” let you decide the duration of how long your data stays on the Google server. Select any one of them and tap on the “Next” button.

This deletion might affect your Google search preferences and other personalizations.

Now, this immediately deletes the data from your activity page. But Google will now start the process to delete it from their storage systems methodically over time. Overall, this will ensure that your web activity, google assistant voice recordings and search history are cleared immediately and further delete them periodically.

2. Delete YouTube history

After you have set the auto-deletion for your Web & App Activity, the location history, and YouTube app Activity will still be maintained. For location history, you cannot set up auto-deletion. Google allows manually deletion as of now. Google still doesn’t allow auto-deletion. But, for YouTube activity, you can still set up auto-delete. Scroll down to the bottom of the Activity Controls and tap “Manage Activity” under the YouTube History section.

How to automatically delete your youtube history

You have to follow the same process as above to turn on the automatic deletion of your YouTube search history.

3. Delete Google Activity through the web app

In case you are not on Android 10, you will have to visit the Manage my Activity web page. On this page, you will find the same “Choose to delete automatically” link. Upon clicking you can how long you want to keep your data and then click on the “Next” button.

Closing Words

Apart from the auto-deletion of Google Activity data, you can also turn off Ad Personalization through the same privacy settings on your Android. This would ensure that you don’t get targetted or intrusive ads.

On Wednesday, Google announced broad changes in its default data practices for new users, including a significant expansion in the company’s willingness to automatically delete data.

In a blog post announcing the changes, CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized the company’s commitment to privacy, security, and user choice. “As we design our products, we focus on three important principles: keeping your information safe, treating it responsibly, and putting you in control,” Pichai wrote. “Today, we are announcing privacy improvements to help do that.”

Google’s auto-delete feature applies to search history (on web or in-app), location history, and voice commands collected through the Google Assistant or devices like Google Home. Google logs that data in its My Activity page, where users can see what data points have been collected and manually delete specific items. Historically, Google has retained that information indefinitely, but in 2019, the company rolled out a way to automatically delete data points after three months or 18 months, depending on the chosen setting.

Starting today, those settings will be on by default for new users. Google will set web and app searches to auto-delete after 18 months even if users take no action at all. Google’s location history is off by default, but when users turn it on, it will also default to an 18-month deletion schedule.

The new defaults will only apply to new users, and existing Google accounts won’t see any settings change. However, Google will also be promoting the option on the search page and on YouTube in an effort to drive more users to examine their auto-delete settings. Auto-delete can be turned on from the Activity Controls page.

The system also extends to YouTube history, although the default will be set to three years to ensure the broader data can be used by the platform’s recommendation algorithms.

In some ways, the new settings represent a compromise between the privacy interests of users and Google’s business interests as an ad network. A user’s most recent data is also the most valuable since it can be used to target people who have recently engaged with a particular product. By keeping the last 18 months of activity, Google is able to retain most of that ad value while also deleting most of the data that would otherwise be available.

Alongside the new default settings, Google will also make it easier for users use Chrome’s Incognito mode, allowing mobile users to switch to Incognito mode with a long-press on their profile picture. The feature launches today on iOS and will soon come to Android and other platforms.

At its Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday, Apple introduced a litany of new security and privacy features that fit into what the company calls its four privacy principles. Today, Google is announcing its own privacy-focused improvements as well, under what Google CEO Sundar Pichai says are "three important principles" of privacy.

Google already announced security and privacy upgrades to Android 11 earlier this month. But Wednesday's changes focus on the data that Google services like Maps and YouTube can access—and how long they keep it for.

"We’re guided by the principle that products should keep information only for as long as it’s useful to you," Pichai wrote in a blog post. "Privacy is personal, which is why we’re always working to give you control on your terms."

Google has been criticized for collecting and retaining data that users don't even realize it has. A year ago, the company added auto-delete controls that allowed you to set your Google account to delete history—like Web and App Activity and location—every three months or 18 months. Such a mechanism was long overdue, but Google would still collect this data indefinitely by default. You had to find the right toggle in your settings to set the auto-delete in motion.

Google's announcements on Wednesday flips this policy around. Newly formed Google accounts will auto-delete activity and location every 18 months by default. YouTube history will delete every 36 months. Existing accounts, though, will still need to proactively turn on the feature, as Google doesn't want to force a change on users who, for whatever reason, want the company to maintain a forever-record of their activity. (You can find our complete guide to limiting Google's tracking here.) As soon as you do, the company will nuke your accumulated activity and location data that's 18 months or older, and continue to do so going forward. Google will also push notifications and email reminders to get existing customers to review their data retention settings.

From Google's perspective, the idea is to give users the convenience and benefits of things like recommendations that come from retaining 18 months of history, while eliminating indefinite storage. But though users can elect to drop down from the 18-month default to three-month auto-delete, there is still no option to auto-delete data on a smaller timescale, like once a week. Auto-delete features also don't apply to services explicitly meant for long-term data storage, like Gmail, Google Drive, and Photos.

Google is also surfacing its existing Incognito Mode in its Search, Maps, and YouTube mobile apps. In the coming weeks all the apps will update so you can turn on this feature by long-pressing on your profile photo in the upper right of the screen.

Incognito Mode works as a sort of pause on Google's activity collection, but it isn't a sophisticated privacy and security shield. The feature doesn't stop Google tracking your browsing anonymously or shield you from potential surveillance by Internet Service Providers or governments. It simply disassociates that activity from your Google account. Using services like Maps without being logged in is similar to using Incognito Mode all the time.

Google is also promoting its Security Checkup feature, which helps walk users through their security and privacy settings. And the company is expanding the tool to include its Password Checkup mechanism for alerting users if any of their passwords are exposed in a data breach.

Where Apple is embarking on more aggressive efforts to block ad-tracking and cross-platform tracking, Google's steps on Wednesday seem much more incremental. As Pichai puts it, "We continue to challenge ourselves to do more with less." The question is, just how much less?

Google can keep track of everything you’ve ever searched for using their Web History service, even if you’ve cleared the browser history on your iPhone, iPad, or PC. Now that Google is changing their privacy policy — which some view as an excellent simplification and standardization and others see as a disturbing data grab — it means your search results won’t be kept separately but potentially shared with each and every other Google service.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has this to say:

Until now, your Google Web History (your Google searches and sites visited) was cordoned off from Google’s other products. This protection was especially important because search data can reveal particularly sensitive information about you, including facts about your location, interests, age, sexual orientation, religion, health concerns, and more. If you want to keep Google from combining your Web History with the data they have gathered about you in their other products, such as YouTube or Google Plus, you may want to remove all items from your Web History and stop your Web History from being recorded in the future.

If you choose to disable Google Web History, here’s how:

  1. Log into your Google account
  2. Go to https://myactivity.google.com/
  3. Tap on Remove all Web History

Once you remove your Google Web History, Google will also stop recording it going forward (unless or until you re-enable it via the same page).

Google has been under increased scrutiny lately when it comes to online user privacy, for the heavy handed way they’ve used Search and Gmail to push their social networks like Google Buzz and Google+, and more recently for the discovery they’ve been circumventing Safari’s third party cookie protection.
