If you get too many pictures on your harddrive, downloaded or photographied, from several different sources, it may happen that you have many duplicates. In that case you need a quick and easy to use program that finds and deletes all your duplicates.
VisiPics does more than just look for identical files, it goes beyond checksums to look for similar pictures and does it all with a simple user interface. First, you select the root folder or folders to find and catalogue all of your pictures. It then applies five image comparison filters in order to measure how close pairs of images on the hard drive are.
Visipic is a program that is considerably faster than any other commercial product and has an interface that let you do other things while Visipics automatically finds your duplicated images. It will detect two different resolution files of the same picture as a duplicate, or the same picture saved in different formats, or duplicates where only minor cosmetic changes have taken place.
All detected duplicates are shown side by side with pertinent information such as file name, type and size being displayed. Its auto-select mode let you choose if you want to keep the higher resolution picture, space-saving filetype, smaller filesize or all of the above. If you are insecure over what you really want to delete you can manually select the images you don’t want to keep and delete them yourself.
The neat functions

Supported file formats
VisiPics uses the ImageMagick libraries to load pictures, for more informations: http://www.imagemagick.org
The JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) image files are a lossy format. The DOS filename extension is JPG , although other operating systems may use JPEG . Nearly all digital cameras have the option to save images in JPEG format, some at different compression levels, such as “fine” and “standard.” The JPEG format supports full color and produces relatively small file sizes. Fortunately, the compression in most cases does not distract noticeably from the image. But, JPEG files do suffer generational degradation when repeatedly edited and saved. These files are best kept in original form. Because of the compression algorithm “artifacts” (blemishes) sometimes appear. The GIF file format is limited to an 8-bit pallete (256 colors). As a result, it is not used for photographic work. It is still used extensively on the Internet because of the great reservoir of GIF images available, and because it supports animation. But, is being superseded by the PNG format. The GIF format does well with images having 256 colors or fewer. It is not at all suitable for photographs. The PNG (Portable Network Graphics) file format does almost everything that the GIF format does and does it better. The PNG file format supports true color (16 million colors) whereas the GIF file format only 256 colors. PNG excels when the image has large areas of uniform color. The lossless PNG format is best suited for editing pictures, and the lossy formats like JPG are best for storage because of smaller file size. Many older browsers do not yet support the PNG file format. The Adam7 -interlacing allows an early preview even when only a small percentage of the data of the image has been transmitted. The BMP (bit mapped) format is used internally in the Microsoft Windows operating system to handle graphics images. These files are typically not compressed resulting in large files. The main advantage of BMP files is their wide acceptance and use in Windows programs. Their large size makes them unsuitable for file transfer. Desktop backgrounds and images from scanners are usually stored in BMP files. The PCX format uses a simple form of run-length encoding (a type of lossless compression algorithm). It was the native file format for one of the first popular DOS graphics programs for early PCs. Most PCX files use a color palette, but the format has also been extended to allow 24-bit images. PCX was quite popular on early DOS and Windows systems, but is nowadays rare, having been largely replaced by formats which support better compression, such as GIF , JPEG and PNG. The TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is mainly for storing raster images , including photographs and line art. TIFF is a popular format for high color depth images, along with JPEG and PNG. TIFF format is widely supported by image-manipulation applications, by desktop publishing and page layout applications, and by scanning, faxing, word processing, optical character recognition, and other applications. The TGA (Truevision TARGA) is a raster graphics file format . It was the native format for some of the first graphic cards for IBM-compatible PCs to support truecolor display. TGA files commonly have the extension “.tga” on PC DOS / Windows systems, and “.tpic” on older Macintosh systems (Mac OS X uses the .tga extension). The format can store image data with 1–32 bits of precision per pixel. Color data can be color-mapped, or in directcolor or truecolor format; optionally, a lossless RLE compression can be employed. The TGA file format was originally in 1984. Several enhancements such as “postage stamps” (better known as thumbnails), an alpha channel, gamma value, and textual metadata were introduced in 1989. A RAW image file contains minimally processed data from the image sensor of a digital camera or image scanner. Raw files are so named because they are not yet processed and ready to be used with a bitmap graphics editor or printed. Normally, the image will be processed by a raw converter in a wide- gamut internal colorspace where precise adjustments can be made before conversion to an RGB file format such as TIFF or JPEG for storage, printing, or further manipulation. These images are often described as “RAW image files” (note capitalization) based on the erroneous belief that they represent a single file format, and thus deserve a common filename extension, .RAW. In fact there are dozens if not hundreds of raw image formats in use by different models of digital cameras.
Perusing thousands of photos from my smartphone transferred to my computer is a bit of a challenge. Separating the wheat from the chaff is a time consuming late-night endeavour. What makes this particularly challenging is WhatsApp, as it is configured on my phone (by default) sends/receives compressed, lower-res images, rather than full-res. Sharing a photo taken by one’s own smartphone would, to my understanding, leave the full-res photo on the phone and additionally create and save a compressed, lower-res and renamed copy of the sent photo in a WhatsApp directory, effectively creating a lower-res duplicate.
As the first iteration of my envisaged workflow I’d like to select unique photos only (over a range of folders and sub-folders). If a given photo exists more than once (either at the same size (same resolution) or at different sizes (different resolutions), I’d like to select only one copy and explicitly only a copy of the highest available resolution (ignoring all lower-res copies).
Building on these two related questions
how could I accomplish this in a jiffy?
The upshot / meaning of this exercise would be to include in the initial photo selection also photos received in WhatsApp – as long as these are unique and no higher-res copy exists elsewhere (on my phone / computer).

Windows only: Concerned you're wasting disk space with duplicate photos but too cautious to go about wantonly deleting pics? Fire up VisiPics and find those dupes.
VisiPics is an extremely thorough program. Many duplicate checkers are limited to comparing the file name, size, and date of creation to compare files and flag them as duplicates. VisiPics uses an algorithm to examine each picture and compare it to the rest, seeking out similarities based on the actual image not just the parameters of the file. VisiPics allows you to specify the degree of filtration. On the strictest setting it looks for tiny differences to consider the images distinct, the looser you set the restrictions to more liberal it becomes in comparing items. An example of this in application: on the strictest setting VisiPics considered two photographs of the same person taken milliseconds apart where their facial expression had changed only very slightly to be identical pictures. When adjusted to a more lax setting it allows for greater variations in photographs and still considered them duplicates.
VisiPic is not the kind of program that you want unleash unsupervised on your photo collection, it certainly can't tell if the difference between one photo and another is the difference between a genuine smile and a grimace. It is however an excellent tool for culling your collection, especially if you're an avid photographer with a preference for use the burst mode when you're shooting. Be forewarned, because Visipics actually compares the content of the photo instead of just the file metadata it is a CPU intensive process. Scanning 29,000 photographs during my test run of the software required approximately 2 hours of background processing while I used the computer for other tasks. For another photo comparison-engine check out Duplifinder . For a quicker, but less intensive method of scanning for duplicate files check out DoubleKiller .
Compare and Delete Duplicate Images with DupliFinder
Windows only: DupliFinder, a free Windows utility, compares digital photos by their name, size, and
If you spend any time with a camera at all, you have hundreds of pictures on your PC. Actually, you may have many hundreds of them, taking up gigabytes of storage space. But somehow, some way, no matter how good you think you are at managing your photos, you’ve most likely have duplicate pictures taking up a substantial amount of hard disk space. Trying to weed through them all and find duplicates is a wearying, thankless task. VisiPics does it all for you, and it won’t cost a penny.
Just run the VisiPics, and it finds duplicate photos–and it doesn’t rely on looking for duplicate file names, but actually compares the photos themselves. Before you run the program, tell it whether you want the comparison to be Strict, Basic, or Loose, which determines how strictly the program should compare photos. It then goes about its work and shows all duplicates on the left-hand side of the screen, side by side. Mouse over any photo and its duplicate, and you’ll see the photo in a preview pane. You can then make sure the photos are actually duplicates.
VisiPics deletes the duplicate photos as well; click any you want deleted. You can instead have them moved to a folder. I tested out VisiPics on seven folders with 359 photos, and it took a little more than three minutes to do its work. I used the Loose setting, and it found 68 photos it said were duplicates. About a quarter of those, though, were not actual duplicates, but rather the same scene taken from a slightly different angle. So make sure to carefully check to make sure that any duplicates are in fact duplicates.
Note: This program is donationware. It is free to try, but the author accepts and encourages donations towards further development.
Duplicate files waste precious space on your computers hard drive especially if you have an SSD and make your computers backups bigger for no good reason. Heres how you can free up some disk space.
Every program we recommend here comes with a clean installer that wont try to install toolbars and other junkware on your system. We hate that, too, so we spent time finding the good programs.
Find and Delete Duplicate Files the Easy Way
If you want to find and clean up files the easy way, theres no better tool for the job than Duplicate Cleaner Pro 4. It might not be free, but unlike the rest, its easy to use and comes chock full of features.
You can download a free trial and see for yourself whether you like it.
dupeGuru, dupeGuru Music Edition, and dupeGuru Pictures Edition
dupeGuru is a great application for this. Its completely free and comes in three flavors: dupeGuru, dupeGuru Music Edition, and dupeGuru Pictures Edition. The music and pictures editions are specialized for finding similar music files and pictures. For example, the music edition will find the same song, even if theyre in different MP3 files encoded at different bitrates. Or the pictures edition will find copies of the same photo even if theyve been resized, rotated, or slightly edited. This utility uses a fuzzy match algorithm and can find files that are very similar and not just completely identical.
Note: The dupeGuru site notes that Windows is no longer supported, but the links under old versions still work fine in Windows PCs.
dupeGuru is completely open-source. The installer wont attempt to drag any toolbars or other junk onto your system, and it isnt even trying to upsell you to anything.
The interface is simple, but easy to use open it, add a few folders or drives you want to scan, and click Scan. Youll see a list of duplicate files, and you can easily select and delete the files you want to remove. Double-click a file in the list to open and examine it.
DigitalVolcanos Duplicate Cleaner Free
Note: use the non-CNET download link.
Digital Volcanos Duplicate Cleaner is another good option. They sell a paid version of this application with more features, but the free version provides the basic duplicate-scanning features with a nice interface. The installer redirects you through Download.com, but it didnt try to install any junkware on our system when we installed it. DigitalVolcano is trying to make money the old-fashioned way by providing a good product and hoping people buy the upgraded paid version with more features.
Duplicate Cleaner provides a pretty interface that will scan your computer and any connected external drives for duplicate files. The pro version also scans for very-similar images and music files that are slightly different, but the free version has the basic duplicate-file-finding features.
This applications advantage over dupeGuru is its prettier interface. It holds your hand a bit more than dupeGuru does.
Use VisiPics to scan for image files that are very similar, even if they arent completely identical. For example, VisiPics will find resized, rotated, edited, and otherwise-modified image files and flag them as duplicates. You may not need these multiple similar copies of photos and other images, so VisiPics can help you here.
dupeGuru and other duplicate-file-removing applications can also do this, but VisiPics has an interface designed with photos in mind. If you have a large collection of digital photos, VisiPics is probably the application to use. It will provide a more visual interface for looking at those photos and clearing our your duplicates.
VisiPics is free donationware, technically and wont try to install any junk on your system. Read our guide to cleaning up your duplicate photos with VisiPics for more instructions.
Duplicate File Finder
Duplicate File Finder is another barebones-yet-functional open-source application with a no-frills interface. It actually has a different approach from other applications. It looks for files that have the exact same size and only then compares them to see if theyre duplicates of each other.
This means you wont get the almost-but-not-quite-exact matching features other applications provide. However, it also means that Duplicate File Finder should be even faster at scanning through a larger set of files. if you only care about files that are completely identical and not just almost identical, you can save time with Duplicate File Finder. It doesnt have the prettiest interface, but it definitely works.
This isnt a complete list of all the duplicate-file-finding utilities for Windows out there. There are many other ones, often with installers packed full of junkware and toolbars. The above utilities should do the job without messing with your system or demanding money.
Remember, dont delete duplicate files in system folders for example, under C:\Program Files or C:\Windows. Programs may depend on having duplicate copies of certain files in specific places. Leave system files alone and only clean up your own personal data files documents, images, music files, videos, and everything else you might have a duplicate copy of.
