Entrepreneurship is more about the journey than the destination. It takes a certain kind of spirit to succeed in the startup world, and while many different types of people make good founders, the best ones tend to share a few key qualities.
There’s no such thing as the “right” personality type to start and run a business, but the entrepreneurial spirit is real. Those who don’t come by those beneficial traits naturally can still cultivate them — they just have to work a little harder than the rest. Fortunately, entrepreneurs aren’t strangers to hard work.
That doesn’t mean introverts have to transform into extroverts to schmooze their way to the top. According to a recent survey by Creditloan.com on personality and working at a side hustle, extroverts are more likely to work more hours, but they don’t earn more.
“Our survey revealed people with an ISTP personality type (introvert, sensing, thinking and perceiving) earned the most, with a median income of $500 after only 45 hours of work each month,” said Dan Wesley at Creditloan.com. “Following ISTPs, ESTJs ($450) ENTPs ($415) and INFPs ($410) earned the most, although the extroverted types put a median of 52 to 55 hours into their side gig each month.”
If side hustles are an entrée to entrepreneurship — and they often are — this study suggests that being the stereotypically gregarious, extroverted business leader isn’t necessarily the only (or even the best) path to success.
The Myers-Briggs types Wesley mentions are commonly known as the top earners, but founders don’t have to neatly fit into psychological boxes to succeed. These types reveal more about the personal preferences of the subjects than their capabilities at work. Numerous examples, from Steve Jobs to Oprah Winfrey, give founders of all personality types hope that they, too, can lead their companies to lasting success.
That said, the founders who understand their personalities and adjust their business practices accordingly tend to do better than those who charge in blindly. Follow these tips to run a business that prospers — no matter what your Myers-Briggs results say.
1. Match your business offering to your personality type.
Free-flowing artistic types likely won’t do well at the helm of no-nonsense accounting firms. Similarly, fastidious fact checkers might be overwhelmed in environments where freedom and flexible deadlines are key. Be aware of business opportunities that might be incompatible with your personality type.
According to a 2010 study by researchers from the University of Groningen, the best entrepreneurs tend to be more creative than most. They know how to create something from nothing and see opportunities where others do not. That creativity doesn’t have to be an innate characteristic, though. With practice, entrepreneurs of all personality types and business preferences can learn how to spot chances to innovate.
2. Identify blind spots in leadership, then improve them.
Leadership may come easier to some personality types than others, but that doesn’t mean everyone else is locked out of the club.
“Leading people is about mobilizing and optimizing the talent and skills of yourself and others in order to achieve results,” said Katrin Schwabe of professional services firm BTS. “And it is about the willingness to hold up the mirror and be very self-aware about your strengths and limitations — and maintaining the capacity to grow and develop.”
Some people feel personally responsible for the success or failure of their ideas, while others are happy to hand off assignments and assume everything will work out. Find the balance by identifying your personal tendencies, both positive and negative, then take precautions to ensure those blind spots don’t stand in the way of progress.

According to Gallup, knowledge seeking is one of the 10 most important traits entrepreneurs can have. Even if complacency comes naturally to your personality type, fight that instinct and make it a point to learn something new as often as possible.
Imagine a company with a founder who doesn’t seek knowledge. When an industry shift changes how that company does business, it will be less agile, hampering its efforts to pivot to meet new demands compared to a company headed by someone with a high level of intellectual curiosity. Learn to love learning. Constantly evaluate the state of your business and ask, “How could these processes be improved?”
4. Stick to strong convictions, but stay flexible in their execution.
Some people get off track at the drop of a hat. Others remain steadfast on the path, even if new circumstances merit reconsideration of the journey. Identify which principles are the most important to your business, then leave room for flexibility in other matters. If you won’t be happy with who you’ve become — or what your business has become — then your definition of “success” hasn’t served you well at all.
Successful entrepreneurs know how to balance tenacity with openness to new ideas. Stick to the road, but when someone proposes a new idea (especially a respected colleague or mentor), consider whether a shift in direction would benefit the company.
The University of Groningen study also found that entrepreneurs who take risks tend to succeed more often than those who don’t. Consider all the information, then strike out on a path — don’t let naysayers stand between you and your goals.

Go further: Each week, look at where your time was spent. Is there a particular productivity hole that needs plugging? Perhaps you’re spending longer than you realized on email, or “quickly checking Facebook” is adding up to several hours over the course of a week.
At the start of your workday, or the end of the previous one, plan out what you’ll be doing. If you don’t, it’s too easy to end up tackling low-priority tasks or getting knocked off-track by interruptions and sudden requests.
Your plan needs to be more detailed than “write report for three hours.” I plan my days in 15-minute intervals, breaking down tasks into clear steps. You might want to experiment with different lengths of time–for instance, the Pomodoro technique involves working for 25 minutes, then taking a five-minute break.
Go further: Aim to work during your most productive hours. The standard 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. isn’t right for everyone. I work from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. so I can spend my evening with family and get to bed early. (A clear end to your work day will help you stay focused, too.)

While this means investing a bit of extra time upfront, you’ll soon reap the benefits of having someone else tackle tasks that are constantly eating up your time.

Two huge productivity killers are interruptions (caused by others) and distractions (caused by you). If you’re going to be successful as an entrepreneur, you need to work to eliminate as many of these as possible.
While each interruption may only take up a few minutes of your time, they’ll often knock you out of the flow of your work, especially if you’re busy with something that requires a lot of concentration. You may not be able to eliminate every interruption, but you can certainly get rid of some. For instance, turn off your phone notifications and only check emails at certain intervals. In my experience mentoring new entrepreneurs and aspiring business leaders, I see far too many who seem to be driven by all the wrong reasons. I’ve had the pleasure of working with a couple of the best-known entrepreneurs of our time, and read about many more in the updated version of the classic book, “Discover Your True North,” by Harvard leadership expert and best-selling author Bill George. He makes a convincing argument that the best leaders and entrepreneurs follow their intrinsic rather than extrinsic motivations.
He emphasizes the value of finding a way to align your strengths with your intrinsic motivations, which he calls the sweet spot. Some of the most effective sweet spots and intrinsic motivations for today’s entrepreneurs would include the following:
Making a difference in the world. When Bill Gates acted on his dream of putting a computer in every home and on every desk, he had no idea of the fortune it would bring to him, since he wanted only to make a difference. Extrinsic motivations often work against entrepreneurs by leading them to set unrealistic and overwhelming goals.
Find personal meaning from building a business. In his book, “The Art of The Start 2.0,” Guy Kawasaki exhorts entrepreneurs to focus on making meaning, not money. He has said many times that if your vision for your company is to grow it just to flip it to a large company or to take it public and cash out, “you’re doomed.” Do it for meaning.
Satisfaction of doing something great. Steve Jobs summarized his intrinsic motivation in 2005 at Stanford in a talk titled “How to Live Before You Die.” He said, “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.”
Personal growth and accomplishment. To be a successful entrepreneur, one can never stand still. The best entrepreneurs enjoy the journey as much as the destination. They have a thirst for knowledge that helps them in their business, as well in their own personal growth. That synergy creates a sweet spot that maximizes their impact.
Seeing the real value of one’s beliefs. When asked why he created Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg replied “It’s not because of the amount of money. For me and my colleagues, the most important thing is that we create an open information flow for people. Having media corporations owned by conglomerates is just not an attractive idea to me.”
Helping others achieve their goals. If you want to achieve your goals, help others achieve theirs. Great entrepreneurs keep your eyes open for other businesses in a related space that can complement theirs. Elon Musk has opened up Tesla car battery patents for use by anyone, which obviously will benefit his business as well as theirs.
Most entrepreneurs will tell you that once they discovered the real purpose for their efforts, they found a new sense of commitment and leadership which allowed them to really inspire and empower others, as well as direct their own actions. At this point they can make the strategic decisions they need to really make a difference, enjoy satisfaction, and leave a lasting legacy.
Many have found that initial failure is one of the best teachers in this regard. I counsel new entrepreneurs to expect failure, and wear it as a badge of pride, rather than trying to hide it. In fact, most investors are wary of anyone who claims to have never failed, reading that claim as an indication of too much caution, or not able to face their own reality.
The primary message here is not to hide your real motivation from yourself, your team, or your investors. You can’t fool them all for very long, and you won’t be happy trying. If you can’t find any intrinsic motivations for what you are doing now, it’s probably time to take a hard look at your lifestyle and your future. Life is too short to be unhappy and unfulfilled for any part of it.

This movie is little brutal, but Jake Gyllenhaal’s acting will keep you engaged. It’s about a struggling guy who is looking for a job but can’t find one. Instead, he finds a window of opportunity after witnessing a crime and decides to become a crime journalist.
This movie will teach you that with a little persuasion and drive, anyone can become anything. It will teach you how focusing on, and improving, your positive attributes will make you limitless.
Go watch this movie, and then come back and tell me you aren’t inspired. It’s not possible.
