So you have a dream, but you have no idea how to get there? Don’t worry. You’re not alone. Many people are in the same boat. They know what they want, but sometimes they don’t even believe it’s possible. So what happens? They either don’t try, or, if they do, they give up before they achieve their goal.

If you’re one of those people, here are 7 things you can do to visualize your results and make them happen:

1. Focus on what you can do now.

Let’s say you have no money in savings because you are literally living paycheck-to-paycheck. How is it possible to ever imagine having a few thousand dollars in savings when all you see is money going out the door? You may not think it is. But you don’t have to start big. Reach in your purse or pocket and grab that spare change. Put it in a jar. Make a habit of doing this. If you do it long enough, it will add up. Then move up and put a dollar in the jar–then five. If you get a tax refund, stick some of it in savings. I think you see the point. Just do something. Any little action toward your goal makes a difference in helping you get there.

2. Break down your goal into small steps.

Maybe you want to start your own business. And you might be great at seeing the end result. You get excited about it, but then you realize that your big vision is at least 10 years off. Then you get overwhelmed, frustrated, and you convince yourself that you can’t do it. Think in terms of baby steps. Start by building a website. Educate yourself on how to attract clients. Slowly, you will make your way toward your end result. Remember, it’s not a race. No one is judging you for how fast you get there.

3. Turn your steps into a chronological plan.

Once you have the small steps broken down, prioritize them. Maybe you want to lose 50 pounds. You have already completed the first step by eliminating one particular food from your diet that will cut out a lot of calories. Then you listed out the other foods you can eliminate and calories you can count. Now, for step three, put them on your calendar. For example: “by June 1st, I will have eliminated these three foods from my diet. By July 1st, will be eating 1,700 calories a day.” You get the point. Put your goals on a calendar and stick to it.

4. Pretend that it has already happened.

With any of the three scenarios above, you can act like your goal is already accomplished. Get your bank statement out and write in the amount of money you want to see in your savings account. Hang it up somewhere. Talk to yourself about how awesome it is to have $2,000 in your savings. Or pretend that the business you just started is a smashing success. Clients are breaking down your doors. Or see yourself feeling great after losing all that weight. Trick your mind into believing it has already happened.

5. Figure out what proof you need that you have achieved your goal.

It is so easy to get frustrated and give up. But if you do, you’ll never get where you want to be. How much money do you need in your savings to feel like you are actually making progress? How many clients or website traffic do you need to feel like your business is on its way to success? How many pounds do you need to lose to get excited and feel like you don’t want to give up? It’s up to you. But you need to figure it out so you don’t quit.

6. Visualize it.

If you are visual person, close your eyes, and see it done. Do this in the morning before you get out bed, and when you go to sleep at night. Or meditate on it at your convenience. The key is to do this every day. The more you can do it, the better. Not only does it get you into the habit of focusing on the end result, it really does trick your subconscious mind into thinking it is reality. If you’re not a visual person, write down affirmations and repeat them every day. However you choose to do it, the key is consistency. Keep doing it.

7. Talk about it to everyone.

Telling other people about your goals makes them real. And it represents a commitment. If you tell your friends, “I’m starting a business,” then they will keep asking you how it’s going. Or if you want to lose that weight, your friends and family will most likely support you. The more you talk about it, the more you get caught up and excited about the end result. It will go from fantasy to reality.

Remember, everyone gets discouraged at some point when they try to achieve a goal. It’s normal. But the difference between the people who succeed and the people who don’t is commitment and consistency. They don’t give up. They keep going. You can too, if you follow these seven simple steps.

All top performers, regardless of profession, know the importance of picturing themselves succeeding in their minds before they actually do in reality. Something I have been able to translate over to the business arena from athletics is the power of visualization. It is extremely effective when harnessed and used correctly.

Every Friday night after our team dinner, my college teammates and I would gather in the hotel conference room to prep for our game on Saturday.

We were led through a series of visualization techniques and practices led by a sports psychologist. Right away, I started to experience the incredible benefits of taking the time to picture myself succeeding before actually playing in the game. I visualized every little detail, from walking into the locker room, tying my cleats and having conversations with my teammates and coaches.

I would picture myself having the “perfect” game, executing the defensive game plan and making big plays. The more vivid I was, the better I seemed to play. I couldn’t believe it. Before the game even started, I had already played the entire game in my mind. This made a tremendous difference because it greatly increased my confidence and comfort level.

In turn, I have been able to harness the power of visualization outside of athletics. Before I take the stage and speak to a large audience, I always picture myself giving the “perfect” speech. I begin weeks in advance by picturing the audience, my choice of words and the reaction from the crowd once I am finished. Visualization can be applied to any area of your life, as I know it has become very beneficial throughout mine.

Consider these three examples:

  • Boxing legend Muhammad Ali was always stressing the importance of seeing himself victorious long before the actual fight.
  • As a struggling young actor, Jim Carrey used to picture himself being the greatest actor in the world.
  • Michael Jordan always took the last shot in his mind before he ever took one in real life.

These top performers, among many others, have mastered the technique of positive visualization and openly credit it as a success tactic.

When you think of a big goal or dream that you want to achieve, it’s natural to think of all of the obstacles that will come your way. The problem is far too often we allow these obstacles to become so big in our minds that it inhibits us from moving forward. This is when many become satisfied with mediocrity.

Don’t let this be you. Rather than creating larger-than-life barriers in your mind and dwelling on everything that will hold you back, envision yourself victorious like Ali. Picture yourself as the greatest at your craft like Carrey. Visualize your next shot as your winning shot like MJ.

What will it take? What sacrifices will you make? How can you handle any obstacles and still have enough to make it to the finish line? The key is to make your positive vision stronger than anything that can set you back.

The truth is, if you can’t picture yourself achieving a goal, chances are you won’t. The more vivid you can get, the better it will work for you. Start thinking of your personal goals in life. Spend about 10 to 15 minutes picturing yourself achieving each one.

Get as detailed as possible. Picture what you will do once your goal is reached. How amazing does it feel? How will this change the course of your life? Remember, the little details increase the likelihood of the big picture.

You don’t need to spend endless hours. Simply get in the habit of putting together a positive vision into your everyday life. Visualize yourself succeeding, achieving every goal, completing every task. See what it does for you and how it makes you feel. This will likely become a pivotal part of your success arsenal.

The bottom line is this: If you can’t picture yourself in your own mind being extremely successful, dominating your market, and running a phenomenal business, then chances are you never will.

If you’re the kind of hard-nosed, stubborn-headed realist I am, things like visualization usually sound like some kind of hippie-ish New Age flimflam to you the first 10 or 12 times you hear about them. That’s how it was for me anyway, and I’d always laugh a little and shake my head dismissively when I’d hear people talking about “the power of visualization.”

But the more I studied successful people, the more I kept running into things like visualization, meditation, and taking time out of your day to focus on what you want. Cases in point:

Henry Ford would take time out of his day to clear his thoughts and imagine the kind of company he wanted to build and the benefits it would provide to people

Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla – both rivals and peerless inventors, and both professed visualizers who imagined their inventions succeeding

Tiger Woods visualizes how the golf ball will move and where it will stop before he ever hits it

Arnold Schwarzenegger, before he spent much time bodybuilding and again once he started, spent time visualizing what it would feel like to win Mr. Universe, and began acting like he’d won it already a few years before he actually did

Jim Carrey, feeling broken down and beaten by his lack of success in Tinseltown, wrote himself a check for $10 million for “acting services rendered,” dated it for 10 years later, Thanksgiving 1995, and stuffed it in his wallet so he’d never forget it. 10 years later, just before Thanksgiving 1995, he was told he’d be paid $10 million for the film Dumb and Dumber , and he buried the check, now falling apart and in pieces, with his father – it had been both of their dreams that he’d find success

Even Albert Einstein first hit upon the theory of relativity while visualizing it, and Steve Jobs talks about blocking out the outside noise to focus on the inner voice in his 2005 Stanford commencement address.

I read about Olympic skiers and world class tennis players visualizing the slopes or the game. I read about martial artists visualizing a bout before it began. Business builders visualizing what their business would one day look like, years before it showed any signs of ever getting there back when everyone else thought they were crazy.

And I thought, this isn’t just some hippie New Age junk. There’s something to this, and I’m not doing it, which means I’m missing out on it.

Perspective is destiny. Here’s how to improve yours.

Each of us has a set of messages that play over and over in our minds. This internal dialogue, or personal commentary, influences our words, actions, habits, relationships and ultimately, in the words of Lao Tzu, the destiny of our lives.

Too often the pattern of self-talk we’ve developed is negative. This internal seed of negativity causes a dark ripple that extends to all corners of our daily lives. We walk around with a dark cloud hovering close-by, and view all glasses as half-empty. Our conversations always revert to all that is wrong with the world, and we’re constantly expecting the worst.

This negative approach to life can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Concepts such as the law of attraction, “you reap what you sow,” and “birds of a feather flock together,” speak to the magnetic power of our thoughts. Many studies confirm the correlation between positive thinking and success.

So how can we begin to brighten our view of the world, and infuse more positivity into our thought patterns? Although quite simple, these six steps can make a profound impact on your approach to life, and ultimately create a more positive outcome.

  1. Practice Gratitude.

One of the quickest ways to shift your focus away from negativity, judgment, and disappointment is to list the things in your life for which you are grateful. Be grateful to be gainfully employed, to sleep in a bed each night, for the sun that comes up each morning, for the waiter who greets you with a smile, for the people that love and care for you, and for a body that lets you experience life each day. Practicing gratefulness can cause almost an immediate shift in your perspective. Keeping a daily gratitude journal, even digitally, can help remind you to keep life’s blessings at the forefront of your mind. Another strategy is to have a gratitude partner—someone who can support you in your journey to positive thinking. Each day, text, email or tell each other three things for which you are grateful. Think of this person as your accountability partner for your path to healthy thinking.
Two Steps Forward.

Initially, it might be hard to stop the negative flow of thoughts. This shift takes time. Be patient with yourself, and first just try to observe your thought patterns. See if you can catch yourself judging others, focusing on failures, complaining about work, or criticizing yourself or your body. When you observe these thoughts, take a moment to counter each negative thought with two positive observations or gratitudes. Think of it as taking two steps forward after your one step back.
Positive Posture.

The mind and the body have an intrinsic connection—each has a profound impact on the other. If you are struggling to move your mind into a more positive perspective, try moving your body there first. Try standing up straight, shoulders back, chin held high, stretching your arms out as wide as they can go. Feel powerful. Feel positive. Carrying yourself with “positive posture” will encourage your mind to feel more positive as well.
Smile.

Another way for your body to “trick” your mind into being more positive is through smiling. The simple act of smiling, even if you don’t necessarily have anything to smile about, can instantly change the way you feel internally. Whether you are sitting at your desk, driving in your car, or walking down the street, smile. You will be amazed how your mind reacts. Even better, try smiling at a co-worker or stranger you pass in the hallway or on the sidewalk. Did they smile back?
Ditch the Crabs.

If you put a crab in a bucket, it will easily climb out. But if you put a second crab in the bucket, neither of them will escape. Once one starts to escape, the other will pull it back down into the bucket. In other words, surround yourself with positive people. It’s hard to maintain a positive perspective if you are constantly pulled down by the negativity of friends, family, or co-workers. If you get trapped in a negative conversation, gracefully try to change the subject to something more positive. However, if you are surrounded by a bucketful of negative crabs, it may be time to reevaluate your circle of friends in an effort to be surrounded by uplifting individuals.
Do Something Kind.

It’s easy to get absorbed by our own world of misfortune and to forget about the people around us. Stepping outside of your daily routine to help someone else can provide amazing perspective and fill you with positivity. Strive to do one nice thing for someone else each day. Call a family member or friend in need of a kind word, compliment a stranger, go out of your way to help a co-worker complete a task, or join the thousands of caffeinated people “paying it forward” in the Starbucks line.

Life is not always easy, and sometimes we get handed a bushel of lemons. However, it is our own perspective that ultimately determines if we will drudge through life puckered and sour, or skip along with a glass of sweet lemonade.

When you think about being open minded, do you picture somebody who is accepting of different opinions, beliefs, and behaviors?

If you do, you are partially right. Mental and emotional rigidity are more likely to accept and embrace differences in world views, beliefs, experiences, and culture.

However, there is another aspect to being open minded. People who are open minded, are open to new experiences, to learning new things, and to understanding differing views, not just accepting them. The result of this is that open minded individuals often enjoy lives that are much more fulfilling than those who are not open to new experiences, people, and ideas.

Unfortunately, being open minded isn’t an easy thing. After all, many of us were raised as children, and continue to live as adults among people who generally have similar belief systems and values.

We also tend to hold onto the same interests throughout our lives. Then, there’s also the fear of the unknown or the unexperienced that is part of human nature. In spite of all of this, you can become a more open minded person. If you’d like to get started, try a few of the following steps.

How to Become an Open Minded Person Even if You See Yourself as Hopelessly Dull

1. Learn to Question Yourself

The next time you find yourself saying no to a new experience, or convincing yourself that there is no way you could ever, enjoy, believe, or understand something, take a moment to ask yourself why?

What is holding you back? Is it fear or prejudice? The more you explore the reasons you tend to close yourself off, the better able you will be to resist those impulses and open your mind.

2. Set a Goal to Experience at Least One New Thing Each Month

To a large extent, becoming more open minded is an action oriented endeavor. To get the results that you want, you have to take action and do things to widen your horizons. Your first step can be selecting one new thing to experience each month. Your possibilities are nearly limitless. If you aren’t sure where to begin, here are a few suggestions:

  • Read a book or magazine that isn’t from your preferred genre
  • Try a new cuisine
  • Write a letter to the editor
  • Visit a new neighborhood
  • Spend a day volunteering with a population you are not familiar with
  • Spend a day with your radio tuned to a new station

3. Examine Your Hot Button Issues From Another Perspective

Remember that opening your mind doesn’t mean changing it. It means learning to view the world from more than one point of view, and to consider multiple possibilities. Take some time to think about a few of your hot button issues. These are issues that you feel very strongly about. They might be related to politics, religion, parenting styles, or morals.

Close minded people tend to see these issues in very binary terms. People are either right or wrong in their views, and the people who are wrong are either morally or intellectually inferior to those who are right.

Unfortunately, this attitude does very little for fostering understanding. It also does little to broaden your horizons. However, if you make an effort to understand why somebody has a different view of an issue, you will often find that their views aren’t due to moral shortcomings or other character flaws. Instead, they are just a product of that person’s life experience.

4. Let Yourself be Vulnerable

There’s no way to be more open minded in your thought processes or your actions without letting yourself be vulnerable. If you try new things, reach out to new people, and attempt to embrace new ideas, you will, on occasion, fail or be disappointed.

If you accept that and allow yourself to be vulnerable, you will soon find that even when things don’t go as planned, things are still okay. Even better, you can still get something positive out of a negative experience. Remember that the failure you may experience can also be used as a launching pad for reaching your goals.

5. Widen Your Circle of Friends

This one is easier said than done, but it is so important. The wider your circle of friends, the more likely you will be exposed to different ideas and belief systems. This is key to becoming a more open minded person.

Obviously, you cannot force a friendship to happen, but you can take steps to make it more likely. For example, you can join a club, or start up a new hobby. Even something as simple as speaking to a different co-worker during your lunch break can make a difference.

6. Stop Making Assumptions

Making too many assumptions is an open mindedness killer. If you find yourself continually saying the following things:

  • I would never like that.
  • I just don’t relate to people who…
  • That’s just not my thing.
  • I would never fit in with…
  • I don’t think I would be welcome…
  • People who live like that are all…

First, become aware of the fact that you do it. Then, make a dedicated effort to stop yourself and then rephrase your assumption. Instead of assuming that you would never like something, restate your thought to say, you aren’t sure if you would like something but are willing to give it a try.

7. Learn to go With The Flow

Mental and emotional rigidity are two things that are sure to get in your way as you try to become more open minded. If you constantly tell yourself you shouldn’t try new things, or convince yourself that the consequences will be dire, you will continue to be closed minded. Try to relax more often and just let life happen.

Chances are, you will find that breaking or at least relaxing some of the rules and restrictions you place on your life actually leads to good things. You’ll be much happier if you adopt a live and let live attitude, not just with others, but also with yourself.

Call a family member or friend in need of a kind word, compliment a stranger, go out of your way to help a co-worker complete a task, or join the thousands of caffeinated people “paying it forward” in the Starbucks line.

1 . Your life is guided by a core set of principles and values

Our life is governed by a certain set of principles. Whatever we do is a direct result of what beliefs we have always held on to. A person who is not spiritually strong will always credit the successes to his own doings and failures, he will blame on others.

Such a person fails to realize there are always spiritual forces at work guiding or protecting them. Those are, on the other hand, spiritually strong inculcate in them the habits of love and compassion because they know they are being taken care of so why shouldn’t they care for others? If ever something bad occurs they tell themselves, “I am being taught a lesson here.”

2 . You are slow to hold on to grudges and quick to forgive

If you hold on to old grudges or make it your objective to wish bad and intend to hurt the other person for the wrong they once did to you, you are making life difficult for yourself. As only a spiritually immature person would let themselves be consumed with hatred of the sort.

Many people come and go in our lives, and the bad ones are here to give us the taste of how low humanity can hit or how evil a person can get. Upon closer inspection, you will find that, although people are usually good, some past event has shaped them into the person they’ve become today.

So you learn to empathize and try letting go of the incident and speak a kind word to them. You are the first to forgive. This elevates your status in front of them, no matter how ill they thought of you in the first place. Life is wonderful and the spiritually strong understand this. They say gratitude and move on.

All the religions in the world tell us to care for the needy and the poor. Thus, the ones who are spiritually strong would find time out of their busy schedules to always help those in need. Often we tell ourselves we are too caught up in the race to make a living that we forget about the less fortunate, even if we had intentions of helping them.

I suggest you ask the same question to the spiritually strong who, just like us, also have jobs and families to tend to, and they will inform you how they are still able to manage time for the poor. As the famous saying goes, “It’s not about “having time. It’s about making time.”

4 . You maintain your childlike sense of wonder

If you are a person who is spiritually strong then you will never give up the curious nature you had when you were only a child. It is common for people to give up on their sense of wonder as adult life begins to take over and they get burdened with responsibilities.

I am not criticizing anyone but see that is the difference. When you are spiritually connected, you rest your case with the authority up above after giving it your all. Meanwhile, he takes care of the matter, you enjoy life and have fun. No one likes to lead a mundane lifestyle, hence, they take every day as a gift.

5 . You are wary of the dangers of excess yet you have an abundance mindset

At first the above can appear to be confusing, however, when you look closely you will see that being spiritual helps you maintain the balance between materialistic gains and spiritual pursuits. When they gather something, they do it without hoarding such as wealth.

Nonetheless, at the same time don’t indulge heavily in making money. When it comes to giving away such as charity, they do it with an abundance mindset, albeit they want to share and it is not just for show. The idea they stick by is the more they give, the more the blessings multiply.

The idea that instant gratification from quick pleasure seeking sources is our right, is the mindset of morally bankrupt people. It does not mean spiritually motivated people do not have the right to experience pleasure, It’s just that they feel if something is worth pleasure, it takes doing on their part rather than resorting to other means. If it is sex, they know the practice is confined to the institution of marriage and this has been instructed in almost all faiths.

In order for society to change, the change begins on an individual basis. Spiritually strong people take responsibility for what they’re doing in life. If it good, they take the credit humbly. Many people are interested in the diet because they can see intermittent fasting results in as little as 10 days.

Besides being linked to boosting your metabolism, “Research seems to be finding [IF] benefits to weight, blood sugar, inflammation, and potentially to brain health,” Isabel Smith, MS, RD, CDN, and founder of Isabel Smith Nutrition and Lifestyle, tells us.

Stop the following 5 bad habits so you can finally see the intermittent fasting results everyone raves about.

You chose the wrong eating window.

There are multiple IF plans, and there’s no one-size-fits-all.

  • 5:2 approach: This plan involves eating your normal diet five days out of the week and restricting your caloric intake to 500–600 calories for the remaining two.
  • 8:16 approach: During the 8:16 approach, your eating window is 8 hours long during the day, and the 16-hour fasting period occurs overnight.
  • Warrior Diet: This approach involves eating small amounts of produce during the day and indulging in a big meal at night.
  • Eat-Stop-Eat plan: This is the method that involves one or two 24-hour fasts per week.

Because there are so many options, you may not be seeing intermittent fasting results if you’re following the wrong IF plan for your lifestyle.

For example, if your weekdays involve hitting the gym for an a.m. sweat sesh, working overtime, and then rushing to get dinner on the table, the 5:2 eating plan may be too restrictive and leave you feeling famished—a recipe for IF failure.

“Some may find that a 12-hour fasting window is all they can do without major discomfort, while others do just fine with a 16-hour fast. For beginners, start with 12 hours and build up from there,” Jim White, RDN, ACSM, EX-P, owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios, explains.

You aren’t eating enough calories.

Registered dietitian Amy Shapiro MS, RD, CDN of Real Nutrition NYC reminds us that not eating enough during your eating window and still trying to cut calories can backfire. “People often try to count the calories they eat during the window, however, that is not the point. The goal is to eat until you’re full, which your body will tell you. By restricting calories, you will under-eat, causing unwanted changes in the body, which can be detrimental long-term,” she tells us.

For successful weight loss and intermittent fasting results, White recommends specific calorie restrictions. (He also notes that caloric needs change based on levels of physical activity and age.):

  • For women: 1,200–1,800 calories
  • For men: 1,800–2,200 calories

“To avoid dipping too low in energy, which could compromise energy and productivity levels during your day, try eating three smalls meals and one to two snacks during your eating window,” White advises. “Additionally, eating only one time a day can lead to extreme levels of hunger which would make it very challenging to make healthful choices at the moment and often lead to overeating.”

You’re eating the wrong foods during your window.

Just because IF focuses on your meal timing rather than macro-tracking, that doesn’t give you the green light to engage in a junk food free-for-all.

“Eating the wrong foods during the eating window and not getting enough nutrients is often a problem while intermittent fasting,” Shapiro tells us. “It is essential to nourish the body with nutrient-dense whole foods so that the body can break them down during the fasted state, keeping you satiated. People use IF as an excuse to eat the wrong things, such as processed foods and sugar, which is not good for the body during the fasted state.”

To see intermittent fasting results, White recommends making the following healthy foods a priority in your diet:

  • healthy fats
  • lean proteins
  • complex carbohydrates
  • fiber found in fruits and vegetables

You’re forgetting to drink water throughout your intermittent fasting diet.

Fasting or not, staying hydrated helps you fight off hunger and cravings. Shapiro reminds us how essential it is to drink up during the fasted state. “Since the body is breaking down components while you fast, water is needed to detoxify them and flush out the toxins. This can also help you to feel full,” she says.

Try keeping a large reusable water bottle by your desk so you can sip throughout the day.

You’re overtraining during the diet.

If you’re planning to hit the gym during your IF period, make sure not to overdo the HIIT circuits or else you may not see the intermittent fasting results you were expecting.

Of course, your workout schedule will depend on which IF diet you’re following:

  • 8:16: If you’re following 8:16 and skip your usual breakfast, engaging in a morning workout on an empty stomach will leave you feeling extremely low on energy and could impact your workout performance and speed of muscle recovery, White says.
  • 5:2: Similarly, working out during the calorie-restricted days on 5:2 won’t help you get the most out of your workout and leave you feeling ravenous. “The body has to be eased into the process of IF. The process works if you do it correctly, but eating too little and training too hard can lead to adrenal fatigue.
