If you don’t want to use the name for your smartphone, it’s possible to customize and change the name of your device to anything you want. Below we’ll explain how you can change the name of the device on the Google Pixel and Pixel XL.

I would love to know how to do this. We have a number of Google Chromebooks connected and I can’t decipher the difference between them. I want to schedule times for them to have internet access without doing a blanket restriction across the board.

Same, all my Devices (except my phone) don’t have a name and are all labeled as “Unknown”. It makes it hard to differentiate them.

The modem gateway, is there a way to rename each device? I don’t have the gateway but most routers do allow for this. Amazon Echo’s are famous for being a pain to tell apart because of the way they are named by default. My Onkyo receivers had this annoyance as well. Within my Asus router though, I can override the name of each device, thankfully.

There is very little you can modify in the Gateway UI. At this point in time all you can do is change logins and channels. Shows number of devices connected but no details. Useless for device mgt.

It’s a good idea to give each of the devices you use a meaningful name. This is especially important on Windows 10, as Microsoft has removed the computer name option from the first-time setup process. Windows 10 PCs will just receive random, meaningless names by default.

On a network, this “hostname” identifies the device on your router’s status pages and when browsing shared files. Such names are also used in “find my device” interfaces and anywhere else the device needs to be identified.

Windows 10

Microsoft simplified the setup process in Windows 10. Windows will no longer ask you to enter a name for your PC when you set it up, which means that your Windows 10 PC probably has a meaningless, confusing name.

To provide a name, open the “Settings” app from the Start menu or Start screen, select the “System” category, and select “About” at the bottom of the list. Click or tap the “Rename PC” button and provide a new name for your PC. Your change will take effect after a reboot.

Windows 7, 8, and 8.1

On previous versions of Windows — or even Windows 10 — you can open the Control Panel, click “System and Security”, and click “System”. Click the “Advanced system settings” link in the sidebar, click the “Computer Name” tab at the top of the System Properties window, and click the “Change” button to the right of “To rename this computer, click Change”. Type a new name into the “Computer name” box and click “OK” to rename your computer.

On a Mac, this option is in the System Preferences window. To access it, click the Apple menu on the menu bar at the top of your screen and select “System Preferences”. Click the “Sharing” icon in the system preferences window, and enter a new name for your Mac in the “Computer Name” field at the top of the window.

iPhone and iPad

This option is available on the “About” screen on Apple’s iOS, used on iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches. To find it, open the “Settings” app from your home screen, tap the “General” category, and tap “About”.

Tap the “Name” field at the top of the About screen and you’ll be able to enter a new name.

Android

For whatever reason, Google doesn’t offer this option on an Android device. If you’re setting up a Wi-Fi hotspot from your Android phone or tablet, you can change the name of that Wi-Fi hotspot in the hotspot settings — but that’s it.

There’s no way to change the device’s name so it’s identified by that particular name on your network. The only way you can do this is to root your Android device and search for an app that can change the “hostname”. You can still use the device’s MAC address to uniquely identify it, at least.

You can rename your Android device in Google Play to make it more distinct when installing apps via Google Play and tracking your lost device, however. Head to play.google.com/settings, or visit the Google Play Store website, click the gear icon, and select “Settings” to access this page. Click the “Edit” button and enter a new name for your device.

Chromebooks

Like Android, Chrome OS is also made by Google. So it should be no surprise that Google hasn’t provided a way to change your Chromebook’s name, either. As with Android devices, you can use the MAC address to uniquely identify a Chromebook on your router’s settings page, if you need to.

Chrome OS is just Linux underneath it all, however. If you put your Chromebook into developer mode — for example, you have to do this to install a Linux desktop alongside Chrome OS — you’ll then have write access to the system configuration files and can change your Chromebook’s name.

Linux

Different Linux distributions handle this in different ways. You can generally change your hostname just by running the “hostname” command as root, but it’ll be reset when you restart your PC. Different Linux distributions define the hostname in different configuration files. For example, on Ubuntu and other Debian-based Linux distributions, you’ll need to edit the /etc/hostname file.

If you’re using another Linux distribution, perform a web search for something like “change hostname on [name of Linux distribution]”.

Other devices will have hostnames, too. They may or may not provide a way to change their names, but you’ll often find this option on an “About” screen or somewhere else in their settings if they do.

I don’t know what you are using to write here, but it looks like a mess.

No paragraphs or useful formatting. There is even a Numbered list button in the Rich Text editor.

It is very easy to add a picture. Just click the Insert/edit image and follow the instructions. I do it often.

Just another user.

I’ve seen many threads – I went looking today as I’d “forgotten” how I did it a year ago, but have new devices. Thought I could easily find a link to the method, but instead had to re-hunt for how I did it a year ago. Netgear R7000 YES YOU CAN RENAME THE DEVICE NAMES that they appear with in “attached devices”.

Note, you can only rename ATTACHED AND ACTIVE devices.

1) Got to “Advanced” from the top tabs.

2) Click “Security”

3) Click “Access Control”

4) Enable “Turn on Access Control” (note, default has all “allowed”)

5) Select name you want change, click the check box then “EDIT” button near top

6) Change device name, click save.

7) Repeat per device.

All of mine are custom – like “LR-TVIX” (living room), “MBR-Roku”, “Fire-xx” (kindle fire for daughter), “Moto-xx” (moto phones for me, wife, kids). List goes on – NAS, receiver, directv, etc. Text from “attached devices” (MAC addresses removed)

There is nothing twisted about setting up a device name for WiFi and Bluetooth connection and that’s why I call it a beginner’s guide. If you are a smart Android user, please do not cross beyond this point. All options are already existing under phone settings, I will just be telling you how to dig into it.

Anyway, I changed the name on my devices by adding a line to the build.prop.

  • I have that setup with a proper name but as suspected that only applies to when using your phone as a mobile hotspot.
It doesn’t affect the name of the device being sent to my router when my phone is connected to my home’s wifi.

  • You can use the Find Device app from Google self, to change the name of your device. Is don’t have the option on my phone (Nokia 6.1) because of Android One but it worked like a charm with the app.

    Just download the app.
    Open it and login.
Select your device if you have multiple devices
Touch the 3 dotted menu button upper right and select ‘Change device name’ of something like that (I’m from Belgium so I don’t know exactly how it’s called).
Now change the name to whatever you want, and wait a bit. If you go the play store on a desktop computer and choose an app to install, press the install button, your devices will be listed. Now the new name of your device should appear. Also, if you check your device name under settings > advanced > about phone, there is a big chance it’s changed there as well.

Now you can delete the app if you want.

  • I know what he is asking about because I’m also searching “how do I set my hostname in pixel”.

As we know, every computer / server have a hostname to connect to a network. On linux, we set hostname by editing the file `/etc/hostname`. On Windows, we do it in `settings`. hostname will be shown on router, and others in the same lan can perform `ping someone_hostname.lan`.

How to change device names on google wifi

    • You can reset your Google Wifi in two different ways, to clear your data and refresh the device if it’s not functioning properly.
    • It’s possible to reset your Google Wifi directly on the device, but if you do so, your information may still be preserved on the Google Wifi app for up to six months.
    • If you reset your Google Wifi through the app, it will clear all data immediately.
    • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.

If your Google Wifi isn’t working properly, or you’re going to send the device back to Google, you should perform a factory reset first.

Resetting your Google Wifi wipes all data off the device, helping it work properly as well as protecting your data and erasing your settings.

Just note that if you perform a reset on the device itself, this information will still be preserved on the app for up to six months.

Here’s what you need to know to reset your Google Wifi, in two different ways.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

How to reset a Google Wifi on the device

    1. Unplug the Google Wifi unit’s power cable.

    2. Begin holding down the reset button on the back of the device.

    3. With the button depressed, reconnect the power source.

    4. When the unit flashes white, then blue, release the button.

If the hardware continues to flash blue for another half minute and then the lights turn solid blue, the reset is underway.

Once the blue flashing begins again, the device is reset and can be used like new or sent away.

How to reset a Google Wifi in the app

    1. Pull up the Google Wifi app and click on the “Settings” section.

    2. Open the “Network & General” tab.

    3. Tap the “Wi-Fi points” tab under Network.

    4. Tap “Factory Reset” and then confirm on the next screen by tapping the same words again.

Some Wi-Fi routers use a name called the Service Set Identifier—usually referenced as SSID—to identify the router on a local network. Manufacturers set a default SSID for their routers at the factory and typically use the same name for all their routers. Linksys routers, for example, usually all have the default SSID of Linksys, and AT&T routers use a variation of ATT plus three numbers.

Reasons to Change the Default SSID

People change a default Wi-Fi name for any of several reasons:

    • To avoid having their router and network confused with those of neighbors who also use the same default names.
    • To improve the security of their home network. The name choice does not increase protection by itself. Nonetheless, using a custom name can deter a network attacker because it indicates that the router is more conscientiously administered than other routers that use generic defaults. In a typical residential neighborhood with many home networks, attackers are more likely to single out the weakest network.
    • To personalize a home network. The SSID can be seen by anyone nearby who scans for Wi-Fi signals from their phone or another mobile device.

How to Change the SSID Name

Each router’s instruction manual contains slightly different instructions for changing the SSID. However, the process, in general, is fairly common across the major router manufacturers. Exact names of menus and settings may vary depending on the specific router model.

Determine the router’s local address and log in to the router’s administrative console through a web browser. Enter the currently active username and password when prompted.

Routers use different IP addresses to access the control panel:

    • AT&T routers use 192.168.1.254.
    • Linksys routers use 192.168.1.1.
    • Netgear routers use http://www.routerlogin.com.
    • Some routers use 192.168.0.1.

Check the documentation or website of other router manufacturers for the local address and default login credentials of their products. An error message appears if the wrong login credentials are supplied.

How to change device names on google wifi

One way to find a router’s address is to check the default gateway. On a Windows PC, press Win+R to open the Run box, then type cmd to open a Command Prompt window. When the window opens, type ipconfig and review the resulting information for the IP address associated with your machine’s default gateway. That’s the address you’ll type into a web browser to access the router’s admin panel.

Find the page within the router’s control panel that manages the configuration of home Wi-Fi networks. Each router’s language and menu placement will differ, so either refer to the documentation or browse the options until you find the right page.

How to change device names on google wifi

Choose a suitable network name and enter it. An SSID is case sensitive and has a maximum length of 32 alphanumeric characters.

Avoid choosing words and phrases that are offensive to your local community. Names that may provoke network attackers such as HackMeIfUCan and GoAheadMakeMyDay should also be avoided.

Select Save or Apply to apply the changes, which take effect immediately.

How to change device names on google wifi

Update the connection for all devices that used the previous SSID and password combination.
