How to change your name on facebook

Whether you’ve just gotten married, no longer identify with your birth name, or just want to change the overly formal “Robert” to “Rob” on your profile, here’s how to change the name you’re using on Facebook.

Before diving in, it’s worth having a look at Facebook’s names policy. You’re required to use “the name [you] go by in everyday life”, but this gives you a fair amount of flexibility. My name on Facebook is Harry and it’s what everyone calls me, but it’s not the name on my birth certificate.

You also can’t use things like:

  • Symbols, numbers, unusual capitalization, repeating characters or punctuation.
  • Characters from multiple languages.
  • Titles of any kind.
  • Words or phrases in place of a name.
  • Offensive or suggestive words of any kind.

As long as you don’t use anything too ridiculous, you should be able to change your name to whatever you want without Facebook having a hissy fit. It’s also worth noting, once you’ve changed your name, you won’t be able to change it again for another 60 days.

To change your name on Facebook, head to the Settings screen. You can get to it by clicking on the arrow in the top right corner and then clicking Settings.

If you’ve got a nickname, professional name or other name that you don’t necessarily go by in everyday life but want attached to your Facebook profile, click Add Other Names. These other names will help people find you in search, so for example, you’d show up for searches for both your married and maiden names.

If you check the Show at Top of Profile checkbox, the name you choose will be shown in brackets after your Facebook profile name. For example, with this nickname, my Facebook profile would say Harry Guinness (Hazza).

There might be a couple of reasons someone would choose to change their last name. The most obvious reason would be those recently married. Another might be that they simply want to go by something else. There are also those individuals who no longer have, or were never given a last name and prefer to use a mononym like Sting or Prince.

How to change your name on facebook

Whatever your reason, you’ll want to know how to update it for your social media profiles. For this article, we’ll be taking a look into how you can go about changing your last name on Facebook.

Changing Your Last Name On Facebook

Changing either of your names on Facebook is rather quite simple. You can do so from either your computer or mobile phone and it takes barely any time at all. Before you change your last name, you should go over Facebook’s name standards to ensure everything goes through smoothly. Would hate for you to have to change it again later, or worse, you get banned for not following the rules.

To change your name on Facebook using a PC:

  1. Launch your preferred browser and head on over to facebook.com .
  2. Log in with your username/email and password.
  3. From the main page, click on the downward arrow at the top-right portion of the screen.
  4. With the drop-down pulled up, click on Settings .
  5. In the “General” tab (the default tab), click on Name in the right side window.
  6. Enter in the name you want into the corresponding box.
  7. Once the name has been entered, click Review Change .
  8. Type your account password into the appropriate box and click Save Changes .
    • If the name is not allowed according to Facebook’s name standards, it will provide you with an error. The name you provide must be your real name. If you feel that Facebook is wrong in denying your name choice, you can fill out this form and let them know.
    • A name change can only take place once every 60 days, so be sure the change is what you really want before committing to it.

To change your name on Facebook using a mobile device:

  1. Using the browser app on your phone, go to m.facebook.com .
  2. Log in with the appropriate credentials for your account.
  3. Tap on the Menu icon (three stacked vertical lines).
  4. Scroll down and tap on Settings .
  5. Then tap on Personal Information .
  6. Tap on Name and enter the new name.
  7. Once the name has been entered, tap on Review Change .
  8. Type in your account password and finish by tapping Save Changes .

Maiden Name

Specifically for those who’ve been recently married, changing your last name on Facebook might cause confusion among some of your friends. This is even more likely for estranged friends and relatives who may want to seek you out on Facebook. They’re likely to look for you using your maiden name as opposed to the new one you took on after saying “I do.”

Don’t worry. There is still a way to keep your new last name on Facebook while allowing others to search for you using your maiden name. The initial steps are exactly like those found in the previous section. The only real difference takes place prior to selecting Review Change .

After you’ve changed your last name to the current one:

  1. Just below the:

You’ll see Other names followed by the link Add or change other names . Click on this link.

  2. From the “Details About You” tab on the left side menu, find the “Other Names” section on the right.
  3. In the “Other Names” section, click on the + add a nickname, a birth name… link.
  4. Click on the “Name Type” drop-down and select Maiden Name .
  5. There are other choices from which to choose if they more closely match your name change reasoning.
  6. Type your full maiden name (first and last) into the Name box.
  7. Click Save Changes .
    • You can choose to have the maiden name shown at the top of your profile alongside your newly changed name. Just check the box for Show at top of profile .

Now everyone who looks you up by your birth name will be able to find you even while you’re using your married name.

Single Word Names (Mononyms)

So you fancy yourself a superstar? If you already have an account, you can request a mononym by filling out this form . For those who don’t yet have an account and would like to create one using a mononym, you’ll have to fill out this form instead.

Don’t be too surprised to see that they require a first and last name on either of the forms. All you’ll have to do is put in the same name you want to use in both spots. So if you want to be known as Sinbad, you’ll have to type it into New first name as well as New last name when submitting your request.

Once Facebook receives the request, they’ll work with you in order to place your mononym onto your account.

Issues With Your Name Change

To avoid becoming a victim of impersonation, scams, and phishing, Facebook has made it a policy that you must use your real name on your account. This is their way of ensuring the community remains safe from those who would do you and others harm through the use of the social networking platform.

Things to Remember Before Changing Your Name on Facebook

  • The name on your account should be the name that your friends call you in everyday life. This name should also appear on a form of ID or document from our ID list. There may be instances of using a name other than what appears on an ID document from our ID list for some profiles.
  • Nicknames can be used as a first or middle name if they’re a variation of your authentic name (such as Bob instead of Robert).
  • You can also list another name on your account (e.g., maiden name, nickname, professional name).
  • Profiles are for individual use only. You can create a Page for a business, organization, or idea.
  • Impersonating anything or anyone isn’t allowed.

All of the above are direct quotes from the official Facebook community policies. So now that you have got all the rules and regulations straight from the horse’s mouth, let’s take a look at the steps you need to follow.

Change Your FB Profile Name on Android, iPhone, and the Web

Unlike Twitter or any other major social media service, Facebook insists that it will not accept anything other than your ‘real’ name. Any name it considers ‘fake’ can get you banned from the social media platform. If you can successfully abide by the stringent restrictions, congratulations on your name change on Facebook.

On the other hand, if you have had enough with the company’s questionable privacy policies and numerous data breaches, check out how you can delete Facebook from your life for good. While you weigh the pros and cons of staying on Facebook, you can at least hide your ‘Active’ status to stop irrelevant messages from annoying friends.

Facebook is planning to change its company name next week to reflect its focus on building the metaverse, according to a source with direct knowledge of the matter.

The coming name change, which CEO Mark Zuckerberg plans to talk about at the company’s annual Connect conference on October 28th, but could unveil sooner, is meant to signal the tech giant’s ambition to be known for more than social media and all the ills that entail. The rebrand would likely position the blue Facebook app as one of many products under a parent company overseeing groups like Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, and more. A spokesperson for Facebook declined to comment for this story.

Facebook already has more than 10,000 employees building consumer hardware like AR glasses that Zuckerberg believes will eventually be as ubiquitous as smartphones. In July, he told The Verge that, over the next several years, “we will effectively transition from people seeing us as primarily being a social media company to being a metaverse company.”

A rebrand could also serve to further separate the futuristic work Zuckerberg is focused on from the intense scrutiny Facebook is currently under for the way its social platform operates today. A former employee turned whistleblower, Frances Haugen, recently leaked a trove of damning internal documents to The Wall Street Journal and testified about them before Congress. Antitrust regulators in the US and elsewhere are trying to break the company up, and public trust in how Facebook does business is falling.

Facebook isn’t the first well-known tech company to change its company name as its ambitions expand. In 2015, Google reorganized entirely under a holding company called Alphabet, partly to signal that it was no longer just a search engine, but a sprawling conglomerate with companies making driverless cars and health tech. And Snapchat rebranded to Snap Inc. in 2016, the same year it started calling itself a “camera company” and debuted its first pair of Spectacles camera glasses.

I’m told that the new Facebook company name is a closely-guarded secret within its walls and not known widely, even among its full senior leadership. A possible name could have something to do with Horizon, the name of the still-unreleased VR version of Facebook-meets-Roblox that the company has been developing for the past few years. The name of that app was recently tweaked to Horizon Worlds shortly after Facebook demoed a version for workplace collaboration called Horizon Workrooms.

Aside from Zuckerberg’s comments, Facebook has been steadily laying the groundwork for a greater focus on the next generation of technology. This past summer it set up a dedicated metaverse team. More recently, it announced that the head of AR and VR, Andrew Bosworth, will be promoted to chief technology officer. And just a couple of days ago Facebook announced plans to hire 10,000 more employees to work on the metaverse in Europe.

The metaverse is “going to be a big focus, and I think that this is just going to be a big part of the next chapter for the way that the internet evolves after the mobile internet,” Zuckerberg told The Verge’s Casey Newton this summer. “And I think it’s going to be the next big chapter for our company too, really doubling down in this area.”

Complicating matters is that, while Facebook has been heavily promoting the idea of the metaverse in recent weeks, it’s still not a concept that’s widely understood. The term was coined originally by sci-fi novelist Neal Stephenson to describe a virtual world people escape to from a dystopian, real world. Now it’s being adopted by one of the world’s largest and most controversial companies — and it’ll have to explain why its own virtual world is worth diving into.

Understanding Facebook’s name change policy

Facebook requires users to use their original name to make it a safer place and easier for friends and family to recognize and connect with you.

Moreover, scams, phishing, threats, abuses, etc., can be checked with real names. And when you use your real name, it becomes easy to recover your account if you lose access as Facebook accepts Government and non-Government IDs to verify you and get your account back.

Besides, if you wish to run Facebook ads related to social issues, elections, or politics, having the actual name is necessary.

These are the essential points you must keep in mind while setting or editing your name on Facebook.

  1. Your Facebook name cannot include the following:
    1. Symbols, numbers, unusual capitalization, repeating characters, or punctuation.
    2. Characters from multiple languages.
    3. Titles of any kind (e.g., professional, religious).
    4. Words or phrases instead of a name.
    5. Offensive or suggestive words of any kind.

Note: Facebook profiles are for individuals. If you have a business, organization, idea, etc., create a Facebook page for that.

Alternative to changing your Facebook name

If you just want people to recognize you on Facebook by your nickname or another name, follow the steps below:

    1. Go to the Facebook app and tap the three lines icon from the bottom right.
    2. Tap Settings & PrivacySettingsPersonal Information.
    3. Tap Name.
    4. Now, tap Add a nickname, a birth name…
    5. Choose Nickname, Maiden Name, Alternate Spelling, Married Name, Father’s Name, Birth Name, Former Name, Name with Title, etc.
    6. Type this name.
    7. Choose if you would like to show this name at the top of your Facebook profile.
    8. Finally, tap Save.

Note: Other names are always public and shown to all.

This is how you can change your name on Facebook using your iPhone or computer. The steps for Android are almost similar.

I hope this short guide helped you. If you still face problems, you can request Facebook for a name change using the form here.

Remember the early days of Facebook before timeline, news feeds and nosey relatives relentlessly commenting on everything you post? Those were the days before changing your name to "Bada55 Von [email protected]" was as easy as changing your status. Now, Facebook takes itself a bit more seriously which hinders users from expressing themselves. For those of us who take this sacred feature seriously, changing your name on Facebook involves a couple more steps than it did back in the early 2000s.

Step One: Review Facebook’s Name Standards

Understandably, Facebook can be a bit strict when it comes to changing your name. To begin the process, review their name standards to make sure your new name falls in line with their myriad guidelines. Here’s an idea of what you cannot do:

    • No symbols, numbers, weird capitalization, repeating characters or punctuation.
    • No characters from multiple languages.
    • No titles of any kind.
    • No words or phrases in place of a name.
    • No offensive words of any kind.

Step Two: Find the Downward Arrow Button

On the top right of your Facebook page, click the downward arrow button. Then go to Settings & Privacy and hit Settings.

    Step Three: Click Name

Click Name and enter your new name. Then click Review Change. At this point, Facebook will ask for your password. Type it in and click Save Changes.

    Step Four: Don’t Give Up!

If you’re getting frustrated by Facebook’s rules and regulations, keep in mind that you have to wait 60 days between name changes. You can also fill out this form to try and get a move on the process.

According to DataReportal, users spend an average of 19.5 hours on Facebook each month.

Moreover, Facebook provides flexibility to a user in how they choose to display their name. As a result, you can use a nickname or even put a shortened name as long as you stick to Facebook’s name policy.

Interestingly, Facebook clearly specifies that a user should keep in mind the following while putting up a name:

    • Users should avoid inserting special characters, numbers, punctuation, and unwanted capitalization of letters in the username.
    • Users should steer clear of characters from multiple languages in their usernames.
    • Titles (professional, religious, etc.) must not be added to the username.
    • Words or phrases in place of a name will not be accepted in a username.
    • Lastly, offensive or suggestive words of any kind are prohibited in the username.

So there you have it, two methods through which you can change your Facebook profile name. One thing to note, you can only make changes to your name every two months, so be cautious while renaming your Facebook profile.

There are times when you may want to change your name on Facebook. Perhaps you’ve outgrown a childhood nickname. Or you’ve gotten married or adopted and want to update your surname. Unfortunately, Facebook is pretty strict about some of its policies, and the “real name” issue is one of them.

If it’s time to change your name on the social network, here’s what to do.

How to change your name on Facebook

On the desktop, tap the downwards-facing arrow in the upper right. Then, select Settings. Under General, you’ll see your name, username (URL), your contact email, and other information. Click Edit next to “Name.” From there, you can enter in a new first, middle, or last name.

Before you attempt this though, you should familiarize yourself with Facebook’s name guidelines. The name you use on Facebook should be “the name that your friends call you in everyday life,” according to Facebook’s Help section. It shouldn’t include a symbol, number, or “unusual capitalization.” It shouldn’t include characters from different languages. It also shouldn’t include a title (so if you’re a proud Dr., Mrs., or Captain, you’ll have to go without). You also can’t use a word or phrase instead of a name or include an offensive or suggestive word. The name should match what’s listed on your ID. However, a nickname is OK as long as it’s a variation of your given name—for example, Chris instead of Christopher.

If you want, you can also add a second name to your account in the “Details About You” setting of your profile. To do this, tap the About section on your profile, then Details About You. Under Other Names, select Add a nickname, a birth name…, and then the type of name you want to add.

How to change your name on facebook

    Screengrab via Facebook

Now you can enter the name, and if you check off “Show at top of profile,” Facebook will show this name alongside the main name tied to your Facebook account. I’ve found this feature useful for friends who’ve gotten married and changed their last name—they’ll often list their maiden name here as a secondary name.

If you violate these Facebook name rules, you have one of three choices. You can remove whatever Facebook finds offensive; you can send a copy of your driver’s license to confirm that what you’re using in fact what your name is, or Facebook will block your account. In some cases, you can challenge Facebook if it doesn’t believe your name is accurate, though. You just have to provide more information about your situation.

However, if you follow the guidelines above, your request for a name change should be totally fine.
