If you’re using the charger that came with your iPhone or iPad, you’re getting “slow” charging speeds. You can buy a much faster charger. And, with iOS 11.2, there are now even several different speeds of wireless charging as well.

Let’s start with the slow option: the included iPhone charger. You know, the little cube (pictured above) that came with your phone. It delivers 5 Watts of power, which will certainly charge your iPhone, but it’s one of the slowest ways you can do it.

The only way to charge your iPhone any slower would be to plug it into a computer’s USB port. The USB port on a computer will often charge at about 2.5W, half the speed of this charger.

You can do better than this.

Starting with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, Apple has allowed iPhones to be charged with an iPad charger. A standard iPad charger you may have lying around—the bigger, curved cube (pictured above) provides 12 Watts of power. If you have a much older iPad charger, it may only provide 10 Watts. You can plug an iPhone into an iPad charger and it will charge faster. Apple officially supports this, and the iPhone won’t draw more power than it can handle.

This still isn’t the fastest method, but if you have an iPad charger laying around, this is a quick and easy way to get faster iPhone charging speeds without buying any additional hardware. Read the text printed on the charger itself if you want to determine whether it’s a 12W or 10W charger.

This tip works for the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X.

If you’re looking to get faster charging speeds and are willing to buy some new hardware, you can buy a USB-C charger and USB-C to Lightning cable to charge your iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, or iPhone X with super fast speeds. This also helps if you have an iPad Pro.

This will allow you to take advantage of the “fast charge” feature, which will recharge your iPhone to about 50% within just 30 minutes, according to Apple.

Apple sells its own 29W USB-C charger and cables, but you can buy third party ones as well. We found that Anker’s 30W USB-C charger paired with a Apple’s USB-C to Lightning cable is great—in fact, it’s less expensive than Apple’s and will charge your iPhone even faster. Apple’s cable offers better charging speed than third-party USB-C to Lightning cables, however.

The 61W and 87W USB-C power adapters included with modern MacBooks will also allow you to fast charge iPhones and iPads, but they’re more expensive to buy separately and won’t charge your iPhone or iPad any faster than the 29W charger. However, if you have a MacBook with a USB-C charger already, you can safely pair it with your iPhone or iPad Pro.

If you have an iPhone 8, 8 Plus, or X, you can take advantage of wireless charging, too. Wireless charging is slower than the “fastest” wired charging mentioned above, however. That doesn’t mean it’s bad—if you’re just charging your phone at night, for example, the speed doesn’t really matter because it will be fully charged by the time you wake up.

Back in January I wrote about the “inconvenient truth” of trying to charge your iPad from a USB port: there’s not enough juice.

My recommendation at the time was Digital Innovations’ ChargeDr, a USB dongle that allows tablets and other devices to charge more quickly. It works (quite well, in fact), but it’s a $30 solution.

If you fancy free workarounds instead, check out Asus Ai Charger. This free utility promises to charge iPhones, iPods, and iPads up to 50 percent faster using your PC’s existing USB ports.

That’s a pretty lofty claim: software that can boost the effective power output of hardware? It sounds almost impossible, but I’m here to tell you: it works.

I tested Asus Ai Charger on my HP Pavilion dm1z laptop. After installation, it adds an icon to the Windows System Tray, one that shows a red X until you plug in your iDevice. (Curiously, it works only with Apple products—I’m not sure why.)

Interestingly, that icon does absolutely nothing when you mouse over it or click it. The only thing that changes it is plugging your phone or tablet, at which point the X is replaced by a charge indicator.

Although I don’t have the necessary electronics to measure this, Asus Ai Charger somehow enables a USB port to produce around 1 amp of power, nearly doubling the 0.5 amps of a typical USB port.

And, sure enough, my iPad charged more quickly than it did without Asus Ai Charger. I wouldn’t call it fast—the stock iPad wall charger produces 2 amps—but it definitely made a difference. And it didn’t cost me a dime.

Blogger Matthew Hunt conducted more concrete tests with his iPhone and posted the results here. In a nutshell, the iPhone charged just as quickly via Ai Charger-assisted USB as it did via wall charger:

Although Asus says that Ai Charger will work with all systems and motherboards, this is definitely a your-mileage-may-vary solution. Indeed, perhaps a use-at-your-own-risk one as well, given that you’re dealing with ports and power output.

As I said, I’ve had good luck with this utility, but if you have the slightest concerns about mucking up your PC and/or iDevice, I suggest you steer clear. And if you want even faster charging from your USB ports, the aforementioned ChargeDr is worth a look.

1. Put your handset in the Airplane Mode While Charging

It is the most popular and efficient way to charge your device faster. At first, if you use the iPhone while charging then it is consuming power and slows down the charging process. But when you turn on the Flying mode, it will stop your phone looking for cellular, you won’t be able to make/get calls, use 3G/4G/LTE and Wi-Fi signals, but can speed up the process.

2. Use an iPad charger

It will be great if you are a lucky owner of two Apple devices. The iPad charger delivers 2.1A (12W), which charges the iPhone a lot faster than its 1A (5W) charger. BUT! It works only for iPhone 6,6s and Plus.

Tests using OS X system information has revealed that the charging profile for the iPhone 6 and higher match that of the iPad. So you can charge the musing the 2.1A charger. While iPhone 5s or lower models are capable of drawing only 5W because of a lot of voltage and disability to work and absorb so much energy.

The iPhone 6 Plus can be charged fully in approximately 2 hours 30 mins using an iPad charger, whereas it can take more than 3,5 hours using the charger that ships with the iPhone.

4. Keep It Cold

You know that iPhone’s battery is very sensitive to temperature. They can’t stand extreme temperatures. Apple confirm that “heat will degrade your battery’s performance the most” and advises that you “keep your iPhone out of the sun or a hot car (including the glove box).” Also, certain cases and covers that don’t “breath” are very problematic, so try to take a case off every time you charge your phone and keep it as near room temperature.How to charge your iphone or ipad faster

5. Charge when connected to a Mac

Without a doubt, Mac computers have strong high-power USB ports. Different Apple computers do have different features for their ports. This may affect charging speed.

A Mac with USB 2.0 ports (typically a MacBook) is rated at 500mA at 5V, in turn, a Mac with USB 3.0 ports offers 900mA at 5V. But apart from this, a Mac with USB 3.0 can provide up to 1100mA at 5V under certain conditions. The difference is obvious.

If you are going to charge an iPhone via a Mac computer you should plug in only the iPhone and keep the computer awake while charging.

That doesn’t mean you’re getting the most out of your iPhone’s battery, though.

If you feel like it’s taking too long to keep your iPhone up to speed, we’ve compiled a few easy tips that’ll help you spend less of your life waiting around an outlet.

Don’t use your computer.

If you’re primarily concerned with speed, use a wall charger or external battery pack instead of your laptop’s USB port. It might be less convenient, but it’ll allow to your transfer more amps of power to your iPhone at once. That means it’ll be faster.

Grab a different charger.

Now, you have to be careful here. Counterfeit chargers are rampant on Amazon and eBay, and they simply cannot be trusted. A slow charge is better than an exploded phone.

That said, while you shouldn’t trust most third-party Apple accessory makers, there are chargers from reputable brands like Anker, Monoprice, and AmazonBasics that are both faster and trustworthy. They won’t be dirt cheap, but the safety is worth the extra buck or two. Just make sure it has Apple’s MFi (Made for iPhone/iPad/iPod) certification on its packaging.

Again, it’s all about how much current these things supply. Apple’s default charger puts out about 1 amp, even though the iPhone is capable of drawing up to 2.1 amps. Something like this $11 option will put out more juice. Alternatively, if you own an iPad, the stronger charger that comes with that can work just as well.

Maybe remove that case.

In other words, keep it cool. The lithium-ion battery in your phone is a physical, delicate thing, and as a result, it doesn’t play nice with extreme heat — the kind that some tight-fitting cases can trap over your phone while it’s charging.

Apple itself says that keeping the battery in a room-temperature climate will get you the steadiest results in the long run.

Take some of the weight off your phone’s shoulders.

While maybe not a charging tip, being mindful of everything your phone is doing will help better preserve your battery in the long run.

You can shut the screen off, for one. (Or at least turn down the brightness.) You can dig into the notifications menu and turn off push alerts for lower priority apps. You can download those videos and songs you want for your commute instead of streaming them. You can disable location services or mobile data when you’re not using them. And so on.

You don’t have to go crazy with this stuff — lots of programs are designed to be efficient with WiFi, Bluetooth, or GPS, and you don’t want to cripple your phone’s utility. You just shouldn’t go all out all the time.

Turn on Airplane Mode, if you’re really in a bind.

If all of that isn’t enough, you can get a little bit more from your charge by enabling Airplane Mode. Ostensibly designed for, you guessed it, airplanes, this shuts off the radios for things like cellular data, WiFi, and Bluetooth. Charging with that stuff disabled will save you a few minutes than it’d take otherwise, depending on how long you’re plugged in.

The trade-off is that you’re disconnecting yourself from the outside world. There’ll be no calls, no texts, no notifications. That kind of defeats the purpose of a smartphone in the first place. Still, if you absolutely need to get as much life as you can, it’s something.

Apple implemented a less stringent version of this idea called Low Power Mode into iOS 9. It works similarly, just to a lesser extent. It can help in a pinch, but it makes your smart device dumber.

Don’t worry about wireless charging.

Earlier this year we reviewed Mophie Juice Pack Wireless , a new set of battery cases that bring honest-to-goodness wireless charging to the iPhone . They work as advertised, and are probably as “fun” as charging a smartphone could be. It’s something Apple is strongly suspected to add to the next iPhone, the way many Android manufacturers have before it.

It’s also slower. With those cases, I found it to take an hour longer to get to the same point using traditional methods. If you’re not in a hurry, it’s a nice thing to have, but then again you’re probably not reading this article in the first place.

Make sure there’s no debris in your Lightning port.

As simple as it sounds, sometimes you may not get the most out of your charge because lint, dust, or other debris is physically blocking your port. You might be fine, but if you suspect some blockage, try taking a toothpick or paperclip and carefully clean the space.

BONUS: Hope really hard that Apple has a faster charging solution with the next iPhone.

Okay, so this isn’t really a tip. Nevertheless, if Apple won’t boost the size of future iPhone batteries — and all signs suggest that it’s not — it’d be nice if to see it implement some sort of turbocharging similar to what many Android phones have with things like Qualcomm’s Quick Charge standard . That way, you wouldn’t have to resort to being crafty like this.

Note: In the box, Apple provides an 18W adapter only for iPhone 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, and new iPads. Other iPhone models, including the less expensive iPhone 11 and the newest iPhone SE 2020, still have the decade-old 5W brick in the box.

Will a 29W, 30W, 61W, 87W, or 96W adapter charge my iPhone faster than 18W charger?

Not necessarily. Even if you use a higher power charger, the iPhone’s input port will accept charging up to 18W (to max 22W). That means, even if you can use an 87W charger, it will charge almost at 18W speeds.

Should I Buy an 18W Charger or Higher?

Besides an iPhone, if you have a MacBook and iPad, go for a powerful adapter. You can charge everything with just this. However, if you only have an iPhone and since 18W or 30W adapter charge at the same rate, you can save some money buying a less capacity one.

Will a Higher Wattage Charger Harm My iPhone?

It is natural to worry that ‘won’t a powerful 61W or 96W brick harm my iPhone?‘ It won’t. Your iPhone controls how much power it intakes, not the charging adapter. So, with your iPhone, you can comfortably use the higher capacity charger that came with your iPad or new MacBook. You can even use the fast charger of reputable Android phones like Samsung.

Disable Mobile Data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Location Services

LTE, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth consume a significant amount of power. They’re powered on even when your device is locked and in sleep mode. One way to get battery life is to disable them when charging.

Let me tell you that “Location Services” and “Background App Refresh” drain the battery the most. So, it’s better to turn them off while your device is charging.

Launch the Settings app on your iPhone → PrivacyLocation Services and turn off the switch next to Location Services.

Charge Device with Certified Cable and Wall Charger Instead of Wireless Charging

Wireless charging is convenient but slow. It also heats the device significantly. If you have less time and wish to charge your iPhone at a faster rate, make sure you use a proper cable and adapter instead of relying on wireless charging.

When it comes to charging; you should always go for the MFi certified chargers and cable. It’s because only the certified cable can deliver fast and secure charging. Therefore, it’s better to pay a bit extra for an efficient charging solution.

Don’t let apps keep running in the background. Force quit the running apps before charging the iPhone. Give it a chance and see the difference. It can go a long way in cutting down the extra time.

What if I told you, that the iPhone is in fact capable of “fast-charging”? Apple officially supports it. It’s just that they never explicitly told you so!

How fast-charging works

Fast charging is a feature supported on certain mobile SoCs, to charge devices faster than conventional USB charging rates. There are two major requirements for a supported device to undergo fast-charging — high power output from the charger, and the capacity of the device to draw that power. To help you understand this concept better, here’s some technical background.

Smartphone chargers are generally rated according to their Power output P (measured in Watts, W), which, in turn, is a product of two independent factors, Voltage V (measured in Volts, V) and Current I (measured in Amperes, A).

Thus, the power rating of a charging adapter provides the operating voltage as well as the current output. For instance, Apple ships three different sets of chargers with its iOS devices, the 5W, 10W and 12W variants. The operating voltage and current output for each of these chargers are provided below:

  • 5W Adapter — Output: 5V ⎓ 1000mA
  • 10W Adapter — Output: 5.1V ⎓ 2100mA
  • 12W Adapter — Output: 5.2V ⎓ 2400mA

Note: A standard laptop USB 2.0 port can provide a current output of 500mA, while USB 3.0 supplies up to 900mA current; both operating at around 5V.

Fast-charging on iPhone

If a smartphone is capable of drawing 2000mA or more current, it can be considered to be fast-charging compatible. And though all iPhone currently ship with the standard 5W (Output: 5V ⎓ 1000mA) charger out of the box, some models are capable of drawing up to 2100mA current, and hence support fast-charging.

How fast-charging works

Fast charging is a feature supported on certain mobile SoCs, to charge devices faster than conventional USB charging rates. There are two major requirements for a supported device to undergo fast-charging — high power output from the charger, and the capacity of the device to draw that power. To help you understand this concept better, here’s some technical background.

Smartphone chargers are generally rated according to their Power output P (measured in Watts, W), which, in turn, is a product of two independent factors, Voltage V (measured in Volts, V) and Current I (measured in Amperes, A).

Thus, the power rating of a charging adapter provides the operating voltage as well as the current output. For instance, Apple ships three different sets of chargers with its iOS devices, the 5W, 10W and 12W variants. The operating voltage and current output for each of these chargers are provided below:

  • 5W Adapter — Output: 5V ⎓ 1000mA
