The commands come from outside and are the things we have to do. Commitments come from within, which is what we want to do. Whether you are deeply involved in yourself or just starting your journey of self-development, there are some decisions that highly successful women are committed to making them complete, composed and successful.

  1. Commit to seeing good. Find ways to love the life you are in. No one’s life is perfect, and you will have aspects that you will not enjoy. Therefore, be committed to adapting your personality to those aspects of your life that are irreplaceable.
  2. Give yourself courage. Commit to using fear as a motivator and do not give it to you as your captain as you get closer to life, love and relationships. If you give in to fear, fear will inspire you to move away from your dreams. Fear facilitates rapid rationalization of a great or healthy idea. To be happy, you must take risks and be prepared to see what the consequences of your decisions will be.
  3. Commit to working hard. Decide to measure your self-assessment according to your work-rating. If success is only about the superficial, keep in mind that this desire focuses on the lack of mind, and it is easy to get caught in the comparison trap and never feel enough. Anxiety blocks the opportunity and makes you focus on how much you do not have.
  4. Committed to the expansion of ideas. Make a commitment to think big and never be satisfied with what you have. Be grateful for the insurance you have, but are not satisfied. Understand that to be very successful in your life, once you have reached a certain level of success, you are not done. Talking about personal detail, always ask “what’s next”. Often times, people are living with a misconception that a successful life is just a matter of luck or an accident. The same people are good at waiting for the miracles to happen in their life. They do not plan or strive to excel their abilities.

In reality, success is predictable and you can learn a particular set of skills to double, triple or quadruple your success rate. All you need to do is to figure out how other professionals are planning their success and how you can imitate them to get the same results.

Seek help from your idol, read about them and plan like them. Follow their footprints and you will reach the same destination where they are at right now.

2 . Work Even if You Don’t Want to Work

What is self-discipline? It’s the ability to dedicate your hours even when you don’t feel like working. Successful people practice self-discipline rigorously. They avoid people who are lazy, procrastinate and are not courageous enough to reflect on what direction their life is heading.

According to studies, it has been found that employees work for only three hours in their eight hour job. Most of them waste their time in gossiping about the movies, the kind of person they met last night at dinner and other subjects which are not relevant to their profession.

You can easily beat 80% of the people around you by working for an extra hour or two in developing your skills rather than gossiping about politics and movies.

3 . Take Control of Your Responses

No profession is free from problems and challenges. The sooner you accept the truth, the better and easier it is for you to grow and excel your skills.

Almost 8 out of 10 people do not have control over their responses. When faced with a problem, they get angry and hold everyone responsible for leading the business in such a horrendous situation. They handle the situation irrationally and end up mounting more problems.

How you respond to a particular situation determines how quickly you are going to climb up the ladder of your professional career. Luckily, like other habits, you can develop a strong mental attitude while dealing with the problems.

4 . Make Results Your Priority

Instead of dwelling on the possibility of what you could have done to avoid the problem, think in terms of how you can mend the situation and bring out the desired result. High achievers do not play the blame game and are a part of those few personalities who set results as their topmost priority.

To begin, embrace the situation as it is. Manage yourself in a way that no matter how difficult a particular situation seems, you’re not going to accept the disappointments. Your response must be relaxed to every situation.

If you change your perception towards your problems and look at them as an opportunity to grow, then your life will immediately turn into an adventurous venture. All you have to do is pay attention to how you’re talking to yourself and what kind of words you’re feeding your subconscious mind.

Remember that 80% of our work and actions in day-to-day life are led by the guidelines of our subconscious mind. The surprising fact is that it’s us who define these guidelines unknowingly. You cannot change the subconscious mind or cause at first, but you can always change its effect, and eventually how you react will automatically change the cause.

Professional people are motivated people. They plan their profession towards greatness and work hard even if they are not feeling like it. They’re in control of how they react and look for the opportunities in every situation. They strive for superiority in their profession and make results their topmost priority.

The day-to-day choices you make influence whether you maintain vitality as you age or develop life-shortening illnesses and disabling conditions like heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and stroke. You may understand exactly what you need to do to enjoy a healthier, happier life: carve out time to exercise, perhaps, or find a way to ratchet down stress. There’s just one hitch. You haven’t done it yet.

Often, the biggest hurdle is inertia. It’s true that it isn’t easy to change ingrained habits like driving to nearby locations instead of walking, let’s say, or reaching for a donut instead of an apple. However, gradually working toward change improves your odds of success. Here are some strategies that can help you enact healthy change in your life, no matter what change (or changes) you’d like to make.

Seven steps to shape your personal plan

Shaping your personal plan starts with setting your first goal. Break down choices that feel overwhelming into tiny steps that can help you succeed.

  1. Select a goal. Choose a goal that is the best fit for you. It may not be the first goal you feel you should choose. But you’re much more likely to succeed if you set priorities that are compelling to you and feel attainable at present.
  2. Ask a big question. Do I have a big dream that pairs with my goal? A big dream might be running a marathon or climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, wiggling back into a closet full of clothes you love, cutting back on blood pressure medication, or playing games and sports energetically with your children. One word to the wise: if you can’t articulate a big dream, don’t get hung up on this step. You can still succeed in moving toward your goal through these other approaches.
  3. Pick your choice for change. Select a choice that feels like a sure bet. Do you want to eat healthier, stick to exercise, diet more effectively, ease stress? It’s best to concentrate on just one choice at a time. When a certain change fits into your life comfortably, you can then focus on the next change.
  4. Commit yourself. Make a written or verbal promise to yourself and one or two supporters you don’t want to let down: your partner or child, a teacher, doctor, boss, or friends. That will encourage you to slog through tough spots. Be explicit about the change you’ve chosen and why it matters to you. If it’s a step toward a bigger goal, include that, too. I’m making a commitment to my health by planning to take a mindful walk, two days a week. This is my first step to a bigger goal: doing a stress-reducing activity every day (and it helps me meet another goal: getting a half-hour of exercise every day). I want to do this because I sleep better, my mood improves, and I’m more patient with family and friends when I ease the stress in my life.
  5. Scout out easy obstacles. Maybe you’d love to try meditating, but can’t imagine having the time to do it. Or perhaps your hopes for eating healthier run aground if you’re hungry when you walk through the door at night, or your kitchen cabinets and refrigerator aren’t well-stocked with healthy foods.
  6. Brainstorm ways to leap over obstacles. Now think about ways to overcome those roadblocks. Not enough time? I’ll get up 20 minutes early for exercises and fit in a 10-minute walk before lunch. Cupboard bare of healthy choices? I’ll think about five to 10 healthy foods I enjoy and will put them on my grocery list.
  7. Plan a simple reward. Is there a reward you might enjoy for a job well done? For example, if you hit most or all of your marks on planned activities for one week, you’ll treat yourself to a splurge with money you saved by quitting smoking, a luxurious bath, or just a double helping of trhe iTunes application “Attaboy.” Try to steer clear of food rewards, since this approach can be counterproductive.

Breaking it down

Taking a 10-minute walk as part of a larger plan to exercise, or deciding to drink more water and less soda, certainly seem like easy choices. Even so, breaking them down further can help you succeed.

Here are a few examples of how you can break a goal into smaller bites.

Take a 10-minute walk

  • Find my comfortable walking shoes or buy a pair.
  • Choose days and times to walk, and then pencil this in on the calendar.
  • Think about a route.
  • Think about possible obstacles and solutions. If it’s raining hard, what’s Plan B? (I’ll do 10 minutes of mixed marching, stair climbing, and jumping rope before dinner.) Maybe I dislike getting my work clothes sweaty. If I’m planning to hop off the bus a few stops early and walk the rest of the way home, what could I do? (I’ll need T-shirts to change into at work. If I bring in five every Monday, I’m covered. I’ll put my walking shoes in my work bag at night.)

Drink more water, less soda

  • Find my water bottle (or buy one).
  • Wash out the bottle, fill it up, and put it in the refrigerator at night.
  • Put a sticky note on the front door, or on my bag, to remind me to take the water bottle with me.
  • At work, take a break in the morning and one in the afternoon to freshen up my water bottle. This is a good time to notice how much (or little) I’m drinking.
  • When I get home from work, scrub out my water bottle for the following day and repeat.

Track my budget for a month

  • Every night, put all receipts and paid bills in an envelope placed in a visible spot.
  • Choose one: a) buy budget-tracking computer software, such as Quicken or QuickBooks; b) buy a similar application for my phone; c) use a debit card for every purchase; d) tuck a notepad into my purse or pocket to record all purchases.
  • Follow instructions to load software on computer, or application on phone, if I’ve chosen to use it.
  • Schedule 30 minutes at the end of the two-week mark to go over expenses with an eye toward identifying low-hanging fruit to trim. Sort expenses into categories first (rent or mortgage, utilities, groceries, entertainment, etc.). Consider what categories to trim. Set a goal to reduce or eliminate some of these expenses (for example: cut out 5% of spending across the board or in one category, ride a bike to work rather than paying commuter fees, or make my own coffee rather than buying it).
  • At the end of the fourth week, review all spending categories and add up the money I’ve saved. Decide on an appropriate reward — maybe spending half the money, spending time in a pleasurable pursuit, or just basking in praise for a job well done.

So often we sit around, thinking about how unhappy we are about one thing or another. Here’s a secret: the only person capable of changing your life for the better is you. You are the only person who can go to the gym, talk to your partner or open your own business. So why don’t you?

Fear of failure

It starts with self-doubt. “Maybe I shouldn’t really do this,” we think. “Maybe it’s not a good idea.” We ask ourselves over and over again if we really should bother lifting weights or eating better. It’s not going to work anyway, is it? You’ve tried it before and it didn’t work then. And everyone has a job they don’t like. Failing would be terrible, so you don’t even try.

The key to following through when you’re committed to change is to fight off your fear of failure . Of course you’re afraid; any sort of change can be frightening. But if you fail to even try, then you’ll be exactly where you’ve always been. You might not fail, but you also won’t grow. You won’t learn.

Reach for success

We’ve established that if you get in your head, you’re dead. The brain is a great tool to strategize with, but there’s a point where you have to use your heart, put yourself on the line and do something.

So don’t think too much. Instead, commit to a decision, act on it and move yourself forward.

A lot of people tend to make “sorta kinda” decisions: “I’ll do this… someday.” Here’s the secret behind why people don’t follow through: The reason people don’t commit to a decision is that they don’t act on it.

You may have thought that it’s the other way around – that you have to commit to a decision before you act on it. But the only way to prove to yourself that you’re completely committed to change and are going to follow through is if you push yourself to take the first step, which is the hardest step to take.

Find a mentor

You don’t have to do this alone. Committing to change is easier when you face it with someone who’s been there.

Find someone who has achieved the results that you want – they lost 30 pounds, or they have their dream career or they’re just truly happy with their life. Finding someone who inspires you in this way is called modeling , and it’s a great way to determine the steps you need to take to reach your goal.

People don’t achieve repeated success because they’re lucky. They achieve repeated success because they’ve found something that works – a formula, a strategy or a tactic – and they’ve repeated it, adjusting as necessary.

Find out what steps this person took to get where they are today. What decision did they commit to and act on that pushed them forward and made them take that first step into the future they wanted? You can follow their method, changing it here and there to better apply to your own needs.

Commit to change

What’s one small decision you could make right now that would take you in the direction you need to go? What’s a big decision that might be really tough, but if you made it, it would take you in a new direction in your life? Write these things down, and start making plans to see them through. They may not happen instantly – they will probably take time and effort – but writing something down is a powerful way to tell yourself you’re going to make something happen. They aren’t just words in your mind anymore. They’re words on paper, a list you can look at again and again.

If you don’t act, your dreams will die in your mind. When you make a decision, commit yourself to it by taking the first step toward it right then and there. Otherwise, you’ll go home, get caught up in the 87 other things you need to do and you won’t make any headway. Take some form of action that will move you in the direction you want to go. Sign up for the membership at the gym. Start thinking about what you want your career to look like. Maybe you need to take a class or read a book to start learning new tactics to improve at your job. The smallest of changes can lead to big results if you follow through with them.

When you’re committed to change, life starts to look different. You stop fearing what might happen and instead embrace it. So what if you fail? At least you learned something – that means you’ve grown. By shifting the way you approach things and realizing that only you can make a difference in your own life, you’ll change the way you think about yourself and the story you’re living .

Beliefs are a tricky thing. We all have some beliefs that we are totally aware of that guide how we move through life. We have political beliefs, beliefs on how to raise kids, religious beliefs. The list is endless. But then there are another set of beliefs that are hidden. I want to talk to you about how you can identify and change your beliefs to be more successful.

I call these beliefs invisible scripts–truths so ubiquitous and deeply embedded in society that we don’t even realize they’re guiding our attitudes and behavior. Like water to a fish, they surround us even if we don’t know it.

That may be jarring that you have hidden beliefs that guide your behavior, but I do have good news–you can change them! But before we get to that, let’s take a look at how these invisible scripts work.

How these hidden beliefs control your life

I can almost guarantee you that you have some beliefs deeply embedded in your mind that you don’t even know about.

Here are a few examples:

“I should buy a house”

“I should be married by 30”

“I need to go to college so I can be successful”

Let me ask you this question, where did these beliefs come from?

Some are reflections of our societal values, while others may be the result of peer pressure. Whatever the case, these hidden beliefs need to be brought into our awareness so we can decide if they serve us or not.

Which brings me to my next point about these invisible scripts–they can either be helpful or harmful. In fact, there are some that you might really believe in even after realizing that they’re invisible scripts.

Take the invisible script Ramit inherited from his parents that made him value education. Ramit came from a childhood where he and his family had to be very mindful about their spending. But somehow, whenever an educational expense came up, his parents found a way to pay for it.

In this situation, Ramit noticed a hidden belief that actually helped him get to his chosen destination, so he kept it.

That’s okay as long as you realize any invisible script you adopt has the power to shape your life tremendously — especially when it comes to money. Over time, certain negative scripts become traps, and their power to hold you back increases significantly.

Now, let’s get into how to identify and overcome your invisible scripts.

5 steps to identify and change your beliefs

Below is a step-by-step process that you can use to identify and ultimately overcome any invisible scripts that are causing obstacles in your life.

Step 1: What’s really important in your life?

This is an important step. Before we can decide which hidden beliefs serve us and which hinder us we have to get clear on what it is we want.

For many people, they may have goals such as finding a romantic partner, or getting a different job, or starting to get financially secure. It can even be as simple as having more fun!

You don’t have to put your whole life in review at this step. Just think about what you want out of the next year or two. After that, let’s move on to step 2.

Step 2: Who are the types of people who have what I want?

Next, you’ll need to think hard on what types of people actually have the things you listed above.

It is very likely that your psychological defense mechanisms will come up at this step. That’s why it’s important to reserve any judgement and honestly explore who these people are.

Step 3: Write down the differences between those people and you

After you write down the assumptions you have about the differences between those people and you, I want you to think about it differently.

I want you to ask yourself, what if these assumptions are not true?

For example, if you want to go out 4 times per week and think about what type of people do that, you may find yourself saying something like, “so you’re saying I have to hang out with a bunch of idiots and spend thousands of dollars per night?”

Woah, no one is saying that!

That is called an extreme reach barrier because you’re immediately assuming to achieve something you have to go to the extreme. That’s not true at all.

After you write down all of your assumptions, ask yourself, what if we can just take these away?

Step 4: Ask yourself, what if those assumptions aren’t true?

Some assumptions you may come up with fall into specific buckets. One of them is called “the natural fallacy”.

You may say that person is just a natural or he went to that school or lived in that city. This serves you by explaining away how someone else has what you want and you don’t.

Naturals are very, very rare. And what you think is a natural is normally someone who spent a lot of time building a skill.

If you strip away assumptions like being a natural, all that is left is you simply haven’t taken the specific steps as the person who has what you want.

Step 5: Eliminate the common fallacies and look for others

One of the deepest helf invisible scripts is “this is always the way it’s been done”. This is one of the more dangerous ones because there’s so much history powering the hidden belief.

We’ve all been passed the phrases and code words by our parents and grandparents that reinforce these beliefs. Here’s a few invisible scripts that are based on “it’s always been done this way” fallacy.

“I’m 27, I should have my own apartment by now”

“I should work harder”

“Online dating is for weirdos”

Can you think of any others? If so, write them down. Just simply being aware of the invisible script will allow you to free yourself from it’s shackles.

Finally take control of your habits

These hidden beliefs at their core are just habits of the mind. With the information in this post, you now have the step-by-step process on how to change your beliefs.

It’s natural to resist change. But that doesn’t have to be the case. Far from it. Change is actually good for us in both our personal and professional lives since it makes us more flexible, exposes us to new experiences and people, and opens up the doors to more opportunities.

However, if you want to make a change in your life, you can to do so positively by following these seven tips.

1. Identify and understand what you want to change.

Whenever you decide to make a change, you must first understand why you’re making the change in the first place. Associate Professor Anthony Grant, from the University of Sydney’s Coaching Psychology Unit, says that you should start by defining your core values and identify what is important to you.

“You need to be able to identify what it is about your goal that adds to you as a person, that makes you feel better and more expansive,” Grant says.

If your goal aligns with your core values, then “the thought of it will trigger a positive gut feeling.”

2. Rid your life of negativity.

This is not as simple as it may sound. If you’re surrounded by negativity, then how can you expect to have a positive and joyful life?

In fact, those who are negative or surrounded by negativity are more stressed, get sick more often, and have less opportunities than those who are positive. Chris Talambas says on Lifehacker, says “When we make a decision to become positive, and follow that decision up with action, we will begin to encounter situations and people that are also positive.”

Of course, that’s easier said than done. That’s why he suggests that you can accomplish this goal by doing the following:

3. Exercise more often.

You may be getting tired of hearing everyone telling you that you need more exercise. Sure. Exercising is great for you physically. But, it’s also an excellent way to become more positive in life. Exercise can change the direction of most situations in your life. As Nike says, “Just Do It.” The benefits of exercise are immeasurable. You gain purpose, drive, but most of all it teaches you a discipline.

For starters, when you exercise, you feel better about yourself, which leads to having more confidence. Exercise also reduces anxiety and stress and releases euphoric chemicals in the brain like endorphins and dopamine.

4. Be kind to others.

Sonja Lyubomirsky, a professor at the University of California, Riverside, says, “People who engage in kind acts become happier over time.” The reason? “When you’re kind to others, you feel good as a person–more moral, optimistic, and positive.”

There numerous ways that you can be kind to others that don’t take that much time and effort. For example, you could purchase coffee for a co-worker. Pay the toll for the person in line behind you. Visit a family member or friend or drive them to the airport. Smile at cashiers or servers. Or, you could volunteer whenever you have free time.

5. Build a support network.

According to the Mayo Clinic, a “strong social support network can be critical to help you through the stress of tough times, whether you’ve had a bad day at work or a year filled with loss or chronic illness.” This group of friends, family, and peers is also important because they provide additional benefits like providing a sense of belonging, an increase in self-worth, and a feeling of security whenever you need advice, information, or guidance.

6. Eliminate the nonessentials.

After identifying the things that are most important in your life, it’s time to start eliminating everything else. This is all about simplifying your life, so that you can focus on the things that matter most to you and prevents you from getting distracted.

As Leo Babauta explains on Zen Habits:

We have so much stuff in our lives, from possessions to things we need to do to information coming in to visual and emotional clutter, that we are overloaded. The result? We end up doing a lot of things that aren’t really important to us, because we have so much other stuff to do that has crept into our lives and that we leave in our lives, unexamined.

I also find this true in the business world that when I eliminate unneeded expenses, you can become much less stressed.

7. Take baby steps.

“The one primary motivator that leads us to persevere is baby steps,” says John Brubaker on Entrepreneur. That’s because when we look at the big picture we can get overwhelmed with all of the steps involved in achieving a goal.

Instead, break the “big picture goal down into systematic, manageable baby steps.” Then, document and celebrate your wins daily.

    5 Ways to Embrace Change at Work and in Life

    Change never seems natural. We naturally repel it and often want to retreat back into our comfort zone so how do you fight that urge?

    Embracing change in work and life is essential to growing as an individual and being a better person than who you were yesterday.

    Change never seems natural or that easy. Think about the New Years resolutions that we rarely keep. We naturally repel it and often want to retreat back into our comfort zone. Normalcy is safe, as it doesn’t provoke fear and it allows us to live our lives without facing things that could potential hurt us or build us up.

    1. Change is Inevitable and Embracing Change Encourages Development

    Because we repel change, we sometimes go through life without ever living up to our full potential our allowing ourselves to express who we really are. Change is an inevitable part of life and no matter how happy we are with how things are currently, life will always change.

    “The only thing constant is change.” We know this and we understand that our environment can’t stay the same forever. All around us, there is change happening on a daily basis. We are forever growing, expanding, aging and changing. So what is it about the world that can seem so overbearing and scary when change happens? Why is it that many of us are instantly repelled by the thought of change? If we could only learn to let change work for us and benefit us, we could be happier with our lives and the process of growth. Embracing change is key to your success and happiness.

    2. Analyze your Life and Find the Negative

    Sometimes we change because we are attempting to rid negative habits or people from our lives. The sooner you become aware that change is going to happen and become open to accepting it in your life sooner, the better off you will be. Be diligent in the way you analyze your life. What are the positives and more importantly, what are the negatives? Are there things that you recognize as non-beneficial but you feel stuck in those actions?

    Think about your life and how you are progressing. Are things moving along as you planned? Are there new factors that are influencing that path?

    3. Make Change While you Can, Before Change Makes You

    It is better to initiate changes ourselves using free will than to let our life progress down a negative path until change affects us in a dramatic way. When you are consciously aware of change, it is much easier. Explore the world and the endless possibilities available to you. Find new opportunities, be brave and face fear. The world isn’t as scary as you might think and there are lots of things out there that are potentially life enhancing but you have to explore them.

    Your attitude toward life is affected by your ability to embrace change. If change happens to you, rather than you influencing that change, you are much more likely to feel like you are being dragged through life. Embrace change with a calm and relaxed mind. Know where you are going and what you are setting out to accomplish. The clearer you picture these changes, the more motivated you will be.

    4. Everyone has doubt, fear and uncertainty

    Everyone has fears and insecurities that stop us from doing this. This doubt and uncertainty is normal and you can never overcome it. All that you can do is learn to embrace it. There will never be a time where you are complete absent of these thoughts and emotions, you will just learn to act anyway, regardless of whether they are there.

    5. Self loathing is counterproductive to embracing change

    Feeling sorry for yourself will often lead you down a negative path. It is counterproductive to change and it will keep you stagnant in your efforts. Never blame your surroundings for misfortune. Stay focused and set your sights high and strive to achieve greatness. As you stay focused, you will learn that embracing change becomes easier and easier. The overall message is that, wherever you are in life, value the journey is it takes time to accomplish anything worth achieving and we have to remember that it is a miracle we are here to begin with and every second must be appreciated.

    I ran across a quote a few weeks ago that I haven’t been able to get out of my head. Strive for excellence, not perfection. This intriguing phrase was uttered by H. Jackson Brown Jr. It took me awhile, but I realized why this is bothering me. Because I’m a perfectionist. In everything.

    Quadrupling my blog traffic in six months isn’t good enough. It’s not where the big bloggers are at.

    Losing 25 pounds isn’t enough. I still have 50 to go! (My weight has bounced between 135 and 230 not once, but twice, during my adult life. Right now I’m somewhere in between). You can see I’m laying it out honestly for this post! haha.

    I’ve had perfectionistic tendencies since I was a kid. In high school, I had a checklist that had to complete everyday. Every check done. One of those was to eat less than 500 calories a day. Yes, I had (have?) an eating disorder. You would be surprised how many days I got those checks done.

    But now I have to wonder…is my striving for perfection setting me back? Is THAT what causes me to lose motivation some days and throw in the towel? To just set down the computer and eat what I want?

    So I did one of the things I excel at. I dug into the research. Here’s how and why I’m going to strive for excellence, not perfection. For today at least. Because today is the only day I can truly change.

    Let’s Define:

    “Perfection: a disposition to regard anything short of perfection as unacceptable” by Merriam-Webster. As a lifelong perfectionist, I can attest that sounds like an extremely accurate definition to me!

    Perfectionism is not a quest for the best. It is the pursuit of the worst in ourselves, the part that tells us that nothing we do will ever be good enough- that we should try harder.

    So, what is excellence? Our old friend Merriam-Webster says that excellence is the quality of being “superior, very good of its kind.”

    So, perfection is a disposition, while excellence is a quality. Excellence is a journey, not a destination.

    A couple of quotes that I liked about excellence that sum it up better than I can. Though the following quote is often attributed to Aristotle, it is not by him. “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence is not an act, but a habit.” Will Durant, philosopher, said this in a treatise on Aristotle. The fundamental principal might be Aristotle’s, that magnificent quote is by Durant.

    Excellence is not a skill. It is an attitude.

    The Problem with Perfection

    Perfection is impossible, thus you are in an eternal state of failure. And nothing limits the desire to try again more than a big failure. Now, imagine living with failure day in and day out. Or if you’re a perfectionist, just look at your daily life. Knowing you are constantly “not good enough.” How motivated do you feel now to try to reach yet another impossible goal? Motivation and inspiration are almost impossible to maintain under these circumstances.

    • Wanting to be perfect limits new opportunities. The perfectionist worries about failure. And in their minds, anything less than perfect is failure. So why tackle something new that you are bound to be less than perfect at?

    • Perfection has a tendency to be future-focused. Things will be better when I’ve achieved this goal, done that perfectly. The problem is we can only influence today. All the good intentions in the world for tomorrow don’t have an actual affect on the outcome.

    • Excellence vs perfection example. Perfection is all-or-nothing. If one part isn’t perfect, the whole thing is worthless. At least in the eyes of a perfectionist. Excellence allows for areas of non-perfection. Say in a big project, one area is lacking. The perfectionist takes this as a sign the whole project is lacking. The person striving for excellence: acknowledges the areas that are great and sees an area that needs improvement.

    Action Steps: How to Achieve Excellence in Your Life

    We’ve come to the clear conclusion that striving for perfection has some negatives. But how do you achieve excellence in your life?

    “If you are going to achieve excellence in big things, you develop the habit in little matters. Excellence is not an exception, it is a prevailing attitude.”

    How to commit achieve excellence and change your life

    Read, read, read. Never stop learning. Every single day (or every single week), take an action to increase your knowledge. On my weekly planner, every single week, I have to: learn more about blogging, learn more about photography, and learn more about design. Some weeks I really don’t want to. But I always strive for more.

    The way to achieve our goals is to learn the meaning of commitment. Whether our goals are personal or business related, without commitment, we can’t achieve anything. Looking back in

    life, everything that you have achieved happened because of your commitment to it. It’s about keeping those commitments even if you are faced with foreseen and unforeseen hurdles.

    Doing things half-baked can give you half-baked results. When you want anything to succeed, you give your 100%. If you’re not committed enough then your goals be will not be achieved. The key is to be focused and invest everything you’ve got.


    Quitting is an expensive lesson. You pay for the time you lost, the energy you have invested, and the expectations you have set for yourself. There are three major reasons why people quit: Perfectionism, lack of faith, and the inability to stay committed. The less committed you are, the less faith you’ll have. If you don’t have faith in what you’re doing, then you will keep on waiting for the perfect moment.


    Remember, someone out there will have the same goals as yours. Ronald Bloomberg once said, “Competing in sports has taught me that if I’m not willing to give 120 percent, somebody else
    will”. The world is highly-competitive and if you want to be able to achieve your goals, you have to be more committed than the next person.


    George Herbert once said, “The resolved mind hath no care”. Once you’re committed to your goal, your mind will be at home. When you make a choice, reflect, evaluate, and commit.


    Commit to something that involves and benefits not just you, but the people around you. You are less likely to give up since you know this goal involves other people. You are also likely to draw upon others for both motivation and support.How to commit achieve excellence and change your life
