How to cultivate a positive mindset (a step-by-step guide)

How to cultivate a positive mindset (a step-by-step guide)

We often hear people being described as positive or negative. However, the truth is that a positive mindset is a choice , not an innate trait. You have the power to change your attitude, and committing to this change can lead you to a happier, more successful life.

These seven steps will help you begin your fruitful journey towards a positive outlook.

1. Start By Acting Like A More Positive Person

Simply behaving like a positive person can shape your attitude and slowly change the way you see the world.

How to cultivate a positive mindset (a step-by-step guide)

For example, studies repeatedly show that forcing a smile can actually lift your mood. In addition, acting like a confident person can begin to transform your self-esteem.

Smile at strangers as you pass them on the street, try to eliminate negative adjectives from your vocabulary, carry yourself like you are having a wonderful day, and invite friendliness by engaging in conversation with others.

At home, try to surround yourself with positive images and morning motivational objects that make you feel content or inspired.

2. Become More Appreciative

If you can dedicate just five minutes of your day to the deliberate cultivation of appreciation, you can dramatically improve your overall mindset.

Keep a notepad for this exercise and list five things you appreciate about your day. You can include anything that makes you feel happy or grateful to be alive.

For example, you might note a wonderful conversation you had with a family member, something beautiful you noticed in the natural world, or success you enjoyed at work.

You may be surprised by how powerful this simple activity can be; it can transform a bad mood into a calm, optimistic one.

3. Spend More Time Focusing On The Present

How to cultivate a positive mindset (a step-by-step guide)

Most negative people live with one foot in the past in the other in the future, constantly dwelling on old regrets and worrying about the potential outcomes of new problems.

One of the keys to developing a positive mindset is to turn your focus to the present; encouraging yourself to fully experience every little nuance of your remarkable life. When you start doing this, it becomes much to appreciate simple pleasures like sharing affection with a pet, taking a walk in the sun or sliding under soft bed sheets.

Many people find that mindfulness exercises help to increase the ability to enjoy the present, so you might start by setting aside time to focus on your breathing and clear your mind.

4. Seek Positive Influences

It’s hard to stay positive if you are surrounded by people who complain, criticize and constantly see the worst in every situation.

These negative attitudes are incredibly infectious, and those who are determined to maintain this type of mindset may even ridicule you for your attempts to have a more positive mindset.

As a result, it is vital to choose your friends wisely and deliberately spend time with people who are energetic, optimistic and supportive.

Socializing with these people will rejuvenate your spirit and give you plenty to appreciate.

5. Don’t Picture Disaster Scenarios

Whatever you want from life, picture yourself achieving your goals. Don’t allow yourself to imagine failure, embarrassment, terror or confusion. Instead, build up detailed pictures of your success, happiness, and pleasure.

One way to reduce your tendency to imagine the worst is to remind yourself that you can deal with any situation that occurs.

With enough time and effort, any difficult, stressful or sad ordeal can be transformed into a positive learning experience that secures more success in the future.

6. Share Positivity With Other People

Transmitting happiness to others is another essential step on the road to a truly positive mindset. When you are nice to people, their reactions create a feedback loop that fosters more good feelings in you. Therefore, this then encourages you to share even more positivity with others.

You don’t need to do anything dramatic to incorporate this practice into your life; simply make sure that you compliment people where credit is due.

For example, you might tell your sister that she looks lovely in her new outfit, thank your coworker for helping you with that difficult project, remind your spouse of one of the reasons why you fell in love, or congratulate someone on giving an excellent presentation.

All of these little gestures make people feel great and serve your overarching goal of being a more positive individual.

7. Treat Yourself Kindly

It’s important to understand that sharing positivity with others does not mean that you should dedicate all of your resources to selfless pursuits. Being a happy, successful person also involves a conscious commitment to meeting your own needs.

It’s impossible to stay positive if you are utterly exhausted and drained. So, don’t feel guilty for turning down social invitations when you need to recharge your batteries.

Finally, make sure that every day of your life involves at least one act of kindness towards yourself (here are 64 ideas), whether it is preparing a sensible meal, listening to a favorite song, reading a good book or sleeping a little later. Recognizing that you deserve love and care is a key part of any positive mindset.

How to Have a Positive Mindset at Work

It often seems like it’s the norm to dread walking into work every morning — but it doesn’t have to be.

How to cultivate a positive mindset (a step-by-step guide)

By Chris Christoff, co-founder of MonsterInsights

It can be difficult to stay positive if you concentrate on all the negative aspects of your job and what it entails. But what would happen if you decided to change your mindset so that you could see things in a different light and view your obstacles as opportunities rather than setbacks?

According to Harvard Medical School, a positive mindset can keep your heart healthy as well as reduce stress and make you a happier person. It can be challenging to remind yourself to stay positive — sometimes life happens and things don’t go your way. That’s normal, but it’s essential to remember that it’s not the end of the world and you can conquer anything if you train your brain to think about it the right way.

If you’re trying to cultivate a more positive mindset at work, here are a few tips to help you get started.

    Practice gratitude.

This isn’t just useful advice for work life, but day-to-day life as well. Gratitude is something that should be mindfully practiced every single day so that, even when work gets chaotic or issues arise, you’re able to remember the positives, too.

Research by Harvard Medical School found that gratitude is linked to happiness and helps people think and feel more positively. When you’re actively going over the aspects of your life or your day that make you feel thankful, it changes your perspective from negative to positive.

Imagine all the wonderful things you could accomplish more efficiently if you focused on how to achieve those goals rather than complaining about them. It makes a world of difference in your attitude as well as your work ethic. Try to write down at least two or three things you’re grateful for every day while at work and make it a continuous habit.

    Help your colleagues.

You know that warm feeling you get when you do something for someone else without expecting anything in return? There’s a science behind it. Several studies outlined in Psychology Today demonstrate that people who perform kind acts for others without expecting anything in return feel happier, healthier and more fulfilled. That’s why it’s essential to apply this to the people you work with every day.

Think about it. Why wouldn’t you want to cultivate a healthy, teamwork-oriented relationship with your colleagues? If you have to see them every day, you want to make sure you’re nurturing a positive environment so you can manifest a positive mindset when it comes to work life. Just because it’s work doesn’t mean it can’t be a place you enjoy, even on the hard days.

    Stop complaining.

A little venting session here and there is normal; everyone has their frustrations, and as humans, it’s natural to feel the need to let them out. However, that doesn’t mean the workplace is the spot to do it or the appropriate company to do it with. Is there an upcoming project that you’re dreading having to complete? Do you have a meeting next week you’d rather not attend?

It’s OK to feel negative emotions concerning different aspects of your job, but if the reality is that you just love to complain, it’s time to stop that behavior. This will only hinder you from doing your best work and put you behind. Stop thinking of hurdles as unfair and instead view them as a way to perform better.

    Smile often.

Research conducted by the University of Kansas found that smiling reduces stress and lowers your heart rate during tense situations. When you’re facing obstacles and all you want to do is scream or rip someone’s head off, take a second to relax your breathing and practice smiling instead.

Whether you’re faking it or not, smiling can help trick your brain into believing you’re in an ideal situation or feeling content even if you aren’t. When you come in contact with your coworkers, be friendly and smile. Wearing a scowl will present you as standoffish and will give your colleagues the wrong idea about you. It’s always better to let people see the best of you, especially when you’re stuck with them.

    Over to you.

If you want to live a life at work you’re proud of, carrying around a negative attitude is the last way to do it. How you present yourself in a professional environment shows others whether or not you’re worth working with, and you want to leave a lasting impression on everyone you meet. Cultivating a positive mindset takes time and practice, especially if you’re used to a negative train of thought, but it can enhance your professional life drastically.

How to cultivate a positive mindset (a step-by-step guide)

Being an optimist can be hard for some people and sometimes you just don’t know where to start with being positive. That’s why I made this Guide to building a positive mindset for you. It will give you all the tips that you will need to start changing your life into a better direction.

    This post contains affiliate links.

Identify your negative beliefs, thoughts and actions

First you really need to identify why you are in a negative mindset. What thoughts do you have when you identify something as bad instead of neutral or good? Do you have certain beliefs in yourself? Are there things you do in your daily life that make you think negative about life? This might take some time to find out, but as soon as you have the core problems you can start changing them into positive thoughts, actions and beliefs. Change the bad things out for good ones. This will be a constant training to be positive, but it gets easier really fast.

    Have a Gratitude Journal

We often forget to be thankful for the little things in life and in my opinion you should write down at least 5 things you are grateful for everyday. You might forget this sometimes, but I personally write whole lists of things that I am grateful for when I feel like I’m in the wrong mood. Make those gratitude lists a daily habit and put them into your morning and evening routine. Always read through them when you are finished and say “Thank you” for these things. It really helps! If you want to read more about Gratitude you can read the blog post I published about it. If you’re interested in getting a journal just for gratitude journaling, I recommend this one.

Get rid of toxic people and situations

There are always things that you think about too much. Most of the time situations that are from the past and that you can’t change anything about. Leave them behind and look forward, maybe talk about it with someone or even a person involved in the problem if it helps you to leave it behind. Also cut negative and toxic people out of your life. You don’t need them. Nobody that is making you feel bad is your friend, stop running after people who only drain your energy or manipulate you. This will make the biggest difference in your life.

    Meditate daily

This will help you to tone down the thoughts and the overthinking. Meditation lowers your stress and can help you to be more positive. I personally love guided meditations and there are a lot online and in apps that are tailored to positivity. Meditating 20 minutes per day has not only an effect on your mood but also your body. There are a lot of studies that show how much changes with your body when you give it this peace. Humans weren’t made to be stressed and negative all the time.

Surround yourself with positive people and things

After you already cut out toxic people and your negative past you should find more positive things to surround yourself with. I frequently unfollow people who don’t inspire me and find more positive and inspiring ones. Maybe start a new hobby to find people who click better with you or even join online communities where you can talk about everything. I’m currently trying to build a group of badass women. Learn more about that HERE.

    Positive self-talk / Affirmations

To keep the positivity high you should continue to form a positive mindset through positive and motivation self talk. I personally love affirmations and use them a lot with my meditation. Affirmations are positive sentences that you say to yourself to reform your subconscious mind into automatically thinking more positive. I personally love affirmations like “I can do this”, “I am worth it” and “I am loved.” Say positive things to yourself daily. Make it a habit!

This was my Guide to building a positive mindset. Of course there are even more things you can do for your mindset, but these are the most effective one that will give you the best jumpstart into changing to positivity.

How to cultivate a positive mindset (a step-by-step guide)

One of the most common questions that I get, “Is a positive mindset really that important to my success?”

    The short answer:

    The long answer:

There are five main reasons that you want to cultivate a positive mindset. They are …

    1) You will perform better

Positivity gives you a mental edge when it counts.

Elite athletes have known this forever. You can’t perform at you best when you’re negative. You’re slower, you’re less precise, and when you are playing at a high level, you will lose.

    2) You will go higher

    Positivity fuels our growth.

Simply put, we play small when we’re negative. Negativity is like a glass ceiling that keeps us safe and prevents our growth. Developing a positive mindset energizes us to see what is possible and think bigger.

    3) You will go farther

Positivity enables us to push through setbacks.

On the road of life, you will encounter adversity. Rejection and failure are common roadblocks that pop up along the way. Positivity allows us to bounce back when we are knocked down.

    4) You will attract other positive people

    Positivity attracts positivity.

People don’t like hanging out with negative people. If you want to have positive things happen in your life, you need to attract other positive people. To do this, you need to focus on building a positive mindset.

    5) You will be happier

    Positivity builds self-awareness.

Your judgemental mind is preventing you from being happy. Negative people are less self-aware than those that cultivate a positive mindset. When you embrace a positive mindset, you develop the self-awareness to push past your blind spots and achieve the happiness that you deserve.

There you have it. Five ways a positive mindset can boost your career.

How to cultivate a positive mindset (a step-by-step guide)Whether you have an existing business or are getting ready to launch your business, one of your most pressing priorities is how to develop and strengthen your entrepreneurial mindset. Yes, building a business takes real work and effort, but it is best done with an attitude that embraces the initiative and risk involved in becoming your own boss. You must be flexible, yet determined, dedicated, yet comfortable with frustration, and a trailblazer, yet a cynic. This might sound like an ambitious task, if you don’t already possess these characteristics. However, you can use these seven habits to cultivate the mindset of a successful entrepreneur so that you’re set up for success.

    1. Keep a positive attitude.

Having a positive attitude is not about pie-in-the-sky promises or a maintaining a Pollyanna-ish attitude. It is about seeing things in perspective and framing things in a positive light. Rather than asking yourself “What can I do to avoid this situation,” ask yourself “What can I do to correct this situation?” The right attitude embraces challenges, always looking for the lesson buried in the difficulties.

    1. Learn from failure and move on.

Disappointments can be difficult, but they are also great opportunities to learn. Instead of being ashamed of the mishaps and blunders you’ve made, seek the lesson you can learn from your mistakes. By learning from your defeats, you grow stronger. Each one of those experiences helped shape you as an individual, so look for the deeper meaning.

    1. Seek to stand out.

Entrepreneurs embrace their uniqueness. As children, we tended to want to blend in rather than be blatantly different. However, now I suggest that you embrace what makes you unique. When you celebrate that which makes you and your company distinct, you stand out from the crowd and differentiate from your competitors.

    1. Embrace life-long learning.

The quickest way to stagnation is to reject new modes of thinking. Entrepreneurs are defined by their ability to embrace new technology, new theories, and new practices. The entrepreneurial mindset is fed by that unending appetite for new learning and it will help you expand your skills and grow your business.

    1. Pace yourself.

Yes, you have a lot you need to accomplish to reach the top of that mountain, but patience and perseverance define successful entrepreneurs. You need to pace yourself as you climb to financial and business success. Pushing yourself is an admirable quality, but ultimately it is unsustainable. It is healthy to prepare for those times when you’ll need to work demanding hours, but don’t define yourself by your ability to do that and only that, or you’ll soon burn out.

    1. Follow through.

If you’ve ever attended a networking event and met people who promised to call you about a potential partnership, then never did, you see the lost opportunity of not following through. Think of following through as grabbing an opportunity. You never know which one of your efforts will succeed, so following through is just another way of being proactive. Take care of things as soon as possible — call people back, say thank you, reach out to colleagues, send the letter, et cetera. as soon as possible.

    1. Set appropriate goals.

Goal setting is another way you can push yourself forward, but remember the quality of your goals must be high. Do not settle for simply setting goals with no follow through. If you want to, for example, set the goal of finding a mentor, ask yourself: what does it take to accomplish that objective? Break it down into tasks like “reach out to 2 potential mentors each month” or “attend 3 networking events each month” so that you break down that goal into manageable activities.

The most successful entrepreneurs spend time nurturing that mindset to ensure that they’re best positioned for success, and so should you.

Anyone else officially quarantine cabin fevered out? We went to the park last week and my son did not want to leave and I don’t blame him. The negative thoughts in my mind are a little bitter we didn’t get to do all the ‘first time things’ I was so excited to do with him this year- like go to the zoo, the aquarium, have play dates and picnics at the parks..

The mom guilt soaks in a bit as I feel he’s already ‘not getting out’ enough. But then the introvert in me says, would we really be doing those things anyway.

But all jokes aside, it’s a big pendulum I’m sure a lot of us have experienced this year of 2020, yeah?

Breath, mama. Take a big inhale and hold it for a few seconds, then let out a big exhale. Exhale the doubt, the fear, the resentment and judgement.

Everything is going to be alright. It may not be how we expected, but if we learn anything from the year 2020, it’s that things can change. Bottom line.

We have to start to normalize the idea of changing our mindset around it all.

Seeing posts flooding my newsfeed like:

    • I’ve been spiralling lately.
    • I am just surviving and feel I don’t have a second to breath.
    • I don’t do well with uncertainty.
    • I’ve fallen out of a lot of my healthy habits that I’ve worked hard at and just cant seem to find the motivation to get back to where I was.
    • My mental health is suffering.
    • I just want to pull out of this funk but don’t know where to turn.

Thats when I started creating an ebook to help break that survival mode cycle so many of us feel stuck in. Because, thing is, I struggled with anxiety long before I became a mother. When I started paying more attention to how I wanted to feel, I found that these habits were at the top of my list to help me feel my best. My heart aches with the uncertainty, hate, and suffering we are going through. And I want to share with you all of my best tips, practices, and habits that help me show up everyday with happiness, love, and hunger to do good.

It is Time to Regain Control and Love Your Life

My goal is for you to turn to it daily, and you will begin to cultivate a meaningful relationship and unconditional love for yourself and your life, from the inside out.

It’s time to regain control and love your life because feeling like you’re constantly stuck in survival mode just doesnt make the cut, mama.

2020 is, heavy. There is no questioning the hurt, heartbreak, struggle, separation, hate – and we may have to work a little harder to keep our chin up…but I do believe we can feel both optimistic and struggling. Thing is to be aware, not ignorant. Just be kind, and don’t criticize. Find the good, not dwell in the hardship. Heavy may be an understatement, so feel your feelings. And take responsibility to continue to show up as you navigate the hard while finding the joy to bring the good to each day.

    If you are feeling

I was out on a bike ride with my husband. Tired and grumpy from training for an upcoming race, I was more negative than usual. My husband noticed I was having a hard time shaking it. He reminded me about how developing a positive mindset would help my riding. Too often people tend to give up just because something is hard.

I will admit my initial reaction wasn’t very kind. But once I calmed down, I stopped to analyze what kind of story I was telling myself. I looked at how it was affecting my attitude, and what changes I needed and wanted to make.

The next day we went out to ride again and rather than vocalize any of my negative thoughts I replaced them with positive ones. I’m getting stronger. My body is healthy. Instead of looking for results that were missing I found ones that were a blessing.

A single footstep will not make a path on the earth. So a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path we must think over and over the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives. –Hendry David Thoreau

Creating a positive mindset isn’t easy and is usually uncomfortable. It means taking a step outside of yourself and looking at your thoughts objectively. As with any desire, if you want it bad enough and are willing to work outside of your comfort zone, it can be yours. The most important thing is to believe in your ability to make it happen.

Some people believe they’re just born negative or it’s part of their personality they can’t change. Wrong! The truth is, anyone can change their outlook with the right tools, a little bit of time, and a bit more practice. If you’re struggling to develop a more positive mindset, try using one of these techniques.

    Don’t Be Afraid to Streak

When you do a certain number of activities in a row, your brain gets a tiny boost of endorphins. Game creators know this which is why many online games require you to “chain” an action. For example, during a cooking game, you may have to chop the vegetables, stir the soup, and serve it to a customer.

When you do those same actions repeatedly, your brain releases endorphins as if you’d done the same thing in the real world, instead of the virtual one.

Knowing this secret, you can now use it to your advantage. Maybe your goal is to get healthier. Try tracking your water consumption and work to hit eight glasses a day. If you want to build your online business, attempt to write one blog post every day. Do you want to improve a relationship? Make a goal to do three kind things for them each day.

Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you’ll start having positive results.

    Change Your Language

The average human has around 40,000 thoughts a day, and the clear majority of them are negative. But the good news is boosting your positivity can be as simple as changing your thoughts.

Start listening for certain keywords in your mental soundtrack and change them. For example, instead of thinking, “I’m a terrible mother,” focus on the positive by saying, “I’m learning important skills to be a better mother to my kids.”

When it comes to your mindset, look for phrases like: never, hopeless, impossible, too late, not enough, or worthless. You may not realize it, but when you think these words, you’re sending yourself a subtle message filled with negativity.

I truly believe in positive synergy, that your positive mindset gives you a more hopeful outlook, and belief that you can do something great means you will do something great.

    Be Open to Change

Many people associate change with something negative. For example, you might be thinking of a move to another city and only consider what you’re giving up. You’d miss your friends, your favorite restaurant, and your comfortable home.

But change can also bring amazing things into your life, too. People with a positive outlook know this, and that’s why they don’t fear change. They choose to embrace it. If you’re worried about an upcoming change, make a list of positive things that could happen as a result.

    View Everything as an Experiment

It’s easy to approach life like it’s a test and there’s only one right answer. But the truth is there can be many answers, and all of them can be right, depending on where you find yourself right now.

For example, you may think checking out a new vacation spot is a terrible idea. You go to the same beach every summer, and you like the way it is predictable. But what if your best friend from High School is hiking the Grand Canyon and you miss each other because you weren’t willing to change your plans.

You don’t have to love something new when you try it. But you do need to approach it with an open mind and a willingness to experiment. Go ahead and try a new hobby you’ve been dreaming of, order something different from your favorite restaurant, or go on a road trip adventure with your best friend.

All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better.

    Developing a Positive Mindset

Developing a positive mindset won’t feel natural at first. It might even feel a little bit cheesy. But if you keep reaching for the positive, you will experience a radical mindset shift in the coming weeks. And just like when I was on my bike ride with my husband – we have to remember it is a process — one that requires a little more effort but helps so much.
