An abstract is a concise summary of an experiment or research project. It should be brief — typically under 200 words. The purpose of the abstract is to summarize the research paper by stating the purpose of the research, the experimental method, the findings, and the conclusions.

How to Write an Abstract

The format you'll use for the abstract depends on its purpose. If you're writing for a specific publication or a class assignment, you'll probably need to follow specific guidelines. If there isn't a required format, you'll need to choose from one of two possible types of abstracts.

Informational Abstracts

An informational abstract is a type of abstract used to communicate an experiment or lab report.

  • An informational abstract is like a mini-paper. Its length ranges from a paragraph to 1 to 2 pages, depending on the scope of the report. Aim for less than 10% the length of the full report.
  • Summarize all aspects of the report, including purpose, method, results, conclusions, and recommendations. There are no graphs, charts, tables, or images in an abstract. Similarly, an abstract does not include a bibliography or references.
  • Highlight important discoveries or anomalies. It's okay if the experiment did not go as planned and necessary to state the outcome in the abstract.

Here is a good format to follow, in order, when writing an informational abstract. Each section is a sentence or two long:

  1. Motivation or Purpose: State why the subject is important or why anyone should care about the experiment and its results.
  2. Problem: State the hypothesis of the experiment or describe the problem you are trying to solve.
  3. Method: How did you test the hypothesis or try to solve the problem?
  4. Results: What was the outcome of the study? Did you support or reject a hypothesis? Did you solve a problem? How close were the results to what you expected? State-specific numbers.
  5. Conclusions: What is the significance of your findings? Do the results lead to an increase in knowledge, a solution that may be applied to other problems, etc.?

As we head into the festive season, booze is likely to factor into socialising more than usual.

But for anyone who experiences feelings of anxiousness – whether a diagnosed generalised anxiety disorder, social anxiety, feelings of worry you find difficult to control, or just anxiety around a certain event – drinking can come with complications.

Even if you don’t suffer from anxiety, it’s become normalised to have a drink or two for ‘Dutch courage’ or to calm nerves if you’re in a social situation where you don’t feel entirely confident.

But drinking when you feel insecure could lead to bigger problems down the line, says Priory psychotherapist Pamela Roberts, based at Priory ’s Woking Hospital in Surrey: “While we are culturally conditioned to have a drink to ‘calm our nerves’ or cope, it can end up being a vicious cycle where alcohol and anxiety become interlinked.”

What happens to your brain and body when you mix anxiety and alcohol?

“Anxiety will increase your breathing and heart rate, which concentrates blood flow to your brain, giving it more oxygen. The effects of this can be to make you feel sick and dizzy. You might feel palpitations and chest pain,” explains Roberts.

“Anxiety also impacts your digestive system – giving you symptoms of gastritis or ‘butterflies’, nausea, diarrhoea, and you might lose weight or binge eat. [It] can trigger your flight-or-fight stress response and release a flood of chemicals and hormones, like adrenaline, into your body.”

Adding a drink to this response can initially distract you and give the illusion of calmness, as alcohol has sedative qualities, she says, but don’t be fooled by that initial feeling.

“It also has effects on your brain that can actually increase your anxiety, so alcohol and anxiety fuel each other.

“Drinking alcohol, especially heavily, can worsen other mental health conditions [too] like depression, by reducing your levels of serotonin and other brain chemicals, which are already low in anxious and depressed people.

“It can also affect your sleep, again increasing your anxiety, [impacting] your energy and your judgement,” she adds, not to mention increasing the chance of ‘hangover anxiety’ the next day.

What could be the impact long-term?

Your brain may begin to associate feeling less anxious with alcohol, and “the longer-term impact is that you rely on alcohol to self-medicate for lots of situations,” says Roberts.

“This can tip into drinking a lot, and a lot more often, as often [people] cannot control their intake, and the root cause of the anxiety isn’t addressed.”

It can be especially risky for people who suffer from social anxiety.

“[They] may find the only way they are able to cope in social situations is to drink alcohol. This may develop into alcohol abuse, particularly if they have to socialise often, say as part of their work, or if their tolerance to alcohol increases – meaning they need larger amounts to ‘reduce’ their anxiety.”

Washing hands can keep you healthy and prevent the spread of respiratory and diarrheal infections from one person to the next. Germs can spread from other people or surfaces when you:

  • Touch your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
  • Prepare or eat food and drinks with unwashed hands
  • Touch a contaminated surface or objects
  • Blow your nose, cough, or sneeze into hands and then touch other people’s hands or common objects

Key Times to Wash Hands

You can help yourself and your loved ones stay healthy by washing your hands often, especially during these key times when you are likely to get and spread germs:

  • Before, during, and after preparing food
  • Before and after eating food
  • Before and after caring for someone at home who is sick with vomiting or diarrhea
  • Before and after treating a cut or wound
  • After using the toilet
  • Afterchanging diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet
  • After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
  • After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste
  • After handling pet food or pet treats
  • After touching garbage

The guidance for the list of key times to wash hands was developed based on data from a number of studies. There can also be other times when it is important to wash hands.

To prevent the spread of germs during the COVID-19 pandemic, you should also wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol to clean hands BEFORE and AFTER:

  • Touching your eyes, nose, or mouth
  • Touching your mask
  • Entering and leaving a public place
  • Touching an item or surface that may be frequently touched by other people, such as door handles, tables, gas pumps, shopping carts, or electronic cashier registers/screens

Washing your hands is easy, and it’s one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Clean hands can stop germs from spreading from one person to another and throughout an entire community—from your home and workplace to childcare facilities and hospitals.

Follow these five steps every time.

Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.

  • Sanitizers do not get rid of all types of germs.
  • Hand sanitizers may not be as effective when hands are visibly dirty or greasy.
  • Hand sanitizers might not remove harmful chemicals from hands like pesticides and heavy metals.

Caution! Swallowing alcohol-based hand sanitizers can cause alcohol poisoning if more than a couple of mouthfuls are swallowed. Keep it out of reach of young children and supervise their use.

  • Apply the gel product to the palm of one hand (read the label to learn the correct amount).
  • Rub your hands together.
  • Rub the gel over all the surfaces of your hands and fingers until your hands are dry. This should take around 20 seconds.
