How to disable or improve google’s google integration

How to disable or improve google’s google integration

If you’ve used Google lately, you’ve probably seen Google+ taking over Google’s search results. You don’t have to put up with it — you can disable the integration, show better social-networking pages or hide those pesky Google+ notifications.

The Google+ integration, also known as “Search, plus Your World” or personalized search results, takes a few forms. It doesn’t only show personalized content — it also presents popular Google+ pages, even if you’re not logged in.

Disabling Personalized Search

Perform some searches in Google and you’ll probably end up seeing Google+ content.

How to disable or improve google’s google integration

You could click the “Hide Personal Results” icon, but you’d still see personalized search results each time you opened your browser and performed a Google search.

How to disable or improve google’s google integration

You can disable it permanently from Google’s “Search Settings” screen.

How to disable or improve google’s google integration

Click “Do Not Use Personal Results” on the page.

How to disable or improve google’s google integration

Click the Save button to save your settings. If you’ve disabled cookies in your web browser, you’ll need to enable them or Google won’t remember your settings.

Don’t Be Evil; Focus on the User

After you disable this, you’ll still see the “People and Pages on Google+” sidebar occasionally. It presents popular Google+ pages related to your query — but is the Google+ page really the best social-networking page?

A project called Focus on the User doesn’t think so. Instead of presenting you with only Google+ pages, it will present you with the best possible social-networking pages, whether they’re from Facebook, Twitter, YouTube or elsewhere.

How to disable or improve google’s google integration

First, you’ll have to enable your bookmarks toolbar if it’s disabled. In Chrome, click the wrench menu, point to Bookmarks and select “Show Bookmarks Bar.” In Firefox, right-click the toolbar and select “Bookmarks Bar.”

How to disable or improve google’s google integration

Once you have, click the “Try a More Relevant Google” link on the Focus on the User page, then drag and drop the cheekily-named “don’t be evil” link onto your bookmarks bar.

How to disable or improve google’s google integration

Whenever you see Google+ results on Google, click the “don’t be evil” bookmarklet and make Google show the best social-networking pages.

How to disable or improve google’s google integration

Wondering how this works? The bookmarklet just scans through Google’s search results for the person and selects the social-networking page that appears highest in the search rankings. In other words, Google already knows the best social-networking pages, but it would rather push Google+.

Hiding Google+ Notifications

If you’ve signed up for a Google+ account, you’ve probably noticed the notifier following you all over Google.

How to disable or improve google’s google integration

Google doesn’t provide any way to disable it, but you can use a browser extension to hide it. Try the Hide Google+ Notification extension for Chrome or the Google Plus Notification Hider add-on for Firefox.

After you install the extension, you won’t be hassled with notifications unless you go to Google+ itself.

Embracing Google+

There’s another option to improve the Google+ integration — embracing Google+ itself. This makes your search results more, well, personal. For example, once you circle How-To Geek on Google+, you’ll see stuff How-To Geek has shared.

How to disable or improve google’s google integration

Like it or not, Google+ seems here to stay. Google users will have to learn to live with it, love it or at least work around it. There’s always Bing, though.

This guide is for publishers who want to monetize an Android app with AdMob and aren’t using Firebase. If you plan to include Firebase in your app (or you’re considering it), see the AdMob with Firebase version of this guide instead.

Integrating the Google Mobile Ads SDK into an app is the first step toward displaying ads and earning revenue. Once you’ve integrated the SDK, you can choose an ad format (such as native or rewarded video) and follow the steps to implement it.

Prerequisites

  • Use Android Studio 3.2 or higher
  • minSdkVersion 16 or higher
  • compileSdkVersion 28 or higher
  • Recommended: Create a Google AdMob account and register an app.

Import the Mobile Ads SDK

Apps can import the Google Mobile Ads SDK with a Gradle dependency that points to Google’s Maven repository. First, make sure that google() is referenced in the allprojects section of your project-level build.gradle file.

Example project-level build.gradle (excerpt)

Next, open the app-level build.gradle file for your app, and look for a “dependencies” section.

Example app-level build.gradle (excerpt)

Add the line in bold above, which instruct Gradle to pull in the latest version of the Mobile Ads SDK and additional related dependencies. Once that’s done, save the file and perform a Gradle sync.

Update your AndroidManifest.xml

Add your AdMob app ID (identified in the AdMob UI) to your app’s AndroidManifest.xml file by adding a tag with android:name=”com.google.android.gms.ads.APPLICATION_ID” , as shown below.

You can find your app ID in the AdMob UI. For android:value , insert your own AdMob app ID in quotes, as shown below.

Initialize the Mobile Ads SDK

Before loading ads, have your app initialize the Mobile Ads SDK by calling MobileAds.initialize() which initializes the SDK and calls back a completion listener once initialization is complete (or after a 30-second timeout). This needs to be done only once, ideally at app launch.

Here’s an example of how to call the initialize() method in an Activity:

Example MainActivity (excerpt)

Kotlin

If you’re using mediation, wait until the completion handler is called before loading ads, as this will ensure that all mediation adapters are initialized.

Select an ad format

The Mobile Ads SDK is now imported and you’re ready to implement an ad. AdMob offers a number of different ad formats, so you can choose the one that best fits your app’s user experience.

Banner

Rectangular ads that appear at the top or bottom of the device screen. Banner ads stay on screen while users are interacting with the app, and can refresh automatically after a certain period of time. If you’re new to mobile advertising, they’re a great place to start.

Interstitial

Full-screen ads that cover the interface of an app until closed by the user. They’re best used at natural pauses in the flow of an app’s execution, such as between levels of a game or just after a task is completed.

Native

Customizable ads that match the look and feel of your app. You decide how and where they’re placed, so the layout is more consistent with your app’s design.

Rewarded

Ads that reward users for watching short videos and interacting with playable ads and surveys. Good for monetizing free-to-play users.

Optimize Google Desktop for Search

The latest version of Google Desktop no longer enables by default the desktop search engine probably because it uses too many resources. I thought this is a good opportunity to list some ways you could improve Google Desktop’s performance, especially if you want to use it as a search engine and not as a widget engine.

When you install Google Desktop 5.5 for Windows, the enhanced search option is disabled and you should leave it that way for now. If you don’t need the sidebar with gadgets, disable the option from Google Desktop’s setup wizard.

Google Desktop will only index the shortcuts from the Start Menu, the entries from Control Panel. To enable the indexing of your files, right click on the system tray icon, select “Options” and click on the check box next to “Enable Enhanced Content Indexing”. Some other relevant options:

* Disable the search types you don’t find useful . “Web history” indexes all the web pages that you load in Internet Explorer and Firefox, so it uses a lot of disk space. If you use Outlook or other email clients and you don’t want to index the email messages from your computer, disable the “email” options. Google Desktop can also search Microsoft Outlook’s Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, Journal, and Notes, so disable these search types if you’re satisfied with Outlook’s search options.

* Exclude folders from indexing . Since Google Desktop tries to index files from your entire hard disk, it’s important to exclude the folders that don’t contain useful files for a desktop search engine. Some examples:
C:\Program Files\ (don’t exclude it if you use Google Desktop to launch apps)
C:\Windows\ (don’t exclude it if you use Google Desktop to launch apps)
C:\ProgramData\ (in Vista)
D:\ (if D: is used for backup)

* Exclude file extensions from indexing . There’s no option for this in the interface, but you can edit this Registry key and add other extensions you want to exclude. The default excluded extensions are: tmp, temp, moztmp, log, pst, ost, oab, nk2, dat, 000, pf, xml, obj, pdb, tlb, pcc, pch, exp, res, map, sconsign, msf. You can also disable other extensions that aren’t associated with useful content: bak, chk, old, gid, prv, wbk, dll.

The Registry value can be found at:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Desktop\file_extensions_to_skip

* Disable the Google integration . By default, Google performs a desktop search every time you search the web and it displays some results from your computer in an OneBox, above the web search results. If you want faster Google searches, less computer resources used to search your desktop and less embarrassing moments when someone else temporarily uses your computer, you can disable the integration.

* More screen space . To disable the taskbar and show the search box by pressing Ctrl twice, select “None” for the “Display Mode”. You can also disable the gadgets button if you don’t use the sidebar.

* Disable Safe Browsing . Google downloads and automatically updates a database of URLs that are used for phishing or for distributing malware and shows you a warning when you visit one of these web pages. If you use other security software or your browser has anti-phishing protection, you can disable this option.

* Save preferences . Google Desktop will only index files when your computer is idle. “Assuming you leave your computer on, Google Desktop should need only a few days to create your initial index. This initial indexing process occurs only when your computer is idle, so you may want to leave your computer on for an evening or two after you install Google Desktop,” explains Google’s help center.

If you already have Google Desktop, excluding folders and file extensions will not remove entries from the index, so the best way to clean your index is to delete it and rebuild it. Close Google Desktop by selecting “Exit” from the system tray menu and delete this folder:

%APPDATA%\Google\Google Desktop\ (Windows XP)
or
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Google Desktop\ (Windows Vista)

After reopening Google Desktop, choose “Re-index” from the system tray menu.

I’ve installed the Google Cloud Build app from Github Marketplace, and enabled it on several repositories, only to discover that enabling access for those repositories automatically starts running the Google Cloud Build “check” after every PR or push to a PR. Since some of those repositories are not actually ready for Google Cloud build, I needed to turn off the checks. I used the URL mentioned in the docs to get to the page where you can select which repositories should be connected to your GCP project, and unchecked a bunch of them. this disconnected them from the project, but, surprisingly, did not disable the Github checks! So now, there are Github checks on several repositories that just result in an error because they’re not connected to any projects in Cloud Build.

Surely, it is not an uncommon use case to need a way to “disable Checks” on a per-repository basis – is there any way to do that?

(If not, consider it a requested feature if there are any Google Engineers reading!) 😉

I did talk to chat support, and the only way we could figure out to remove the checks would be to uninstall Google Cloud Build completely from the entire organization, which I don’t want to do because we do have some setup that I want to keep, and I don’t know how much of that configuration would have to be redone if I uninstalled it completely.

Here is a screenshot of the broken check that I can’t disable:

Настройка автоматически отображаемой кнопки входа (рекомендуется)

Вы можете создать кнопку входа в Google, чтобы она соответствовала дизайну вашего сайта. Вы должны следовать рекомендациям по брендингу и использовать соответствующие цвета и значки на кнопке. Рекомендации по брендингу также предоставляют ресурсы значков, которые вы можете использовать для создания своей кнопки. Вы также должны убедиться, что ваша кнопка так же заметна, как и другие сторонние варианты входа в систему.

I bought a Nexus 4. It’s my first Android device, and I’m really disappointed at how this thing is a complete intrusion of my privacy and online behavior. Just in upgrading the default applications that came with the device, it seems like Google can literally do whatever it wants with my personal information. Every single Google app seems to require every permission under the sun.

One of the things that really bothers me is Google looking at my Google+ stuff and pulling it in for other applications. When I’m browsing the Google Play store for an application, I don’t like that I see friends comments on products I’m looking at. Conversely, I don’t necessarily want my friends to see a review I write for an application or book or whatever the case may be. How can I disable this? If I try to disable the Google+ application from Settings, I’m warned that I may break a bunch of important stuff that depends on it. Google Play is an important application.

I feel like this is all so crazy. I don’t want this level of integration because its impossible to manage. My previous device was an old iPhone and everything was cleanly sandboxed. Here, Google unifies everything. I search for a certain kind of product or TV show or whatever and I get a bunch of Play Store recommendations for the same thing. This is messed up.

Can I get rid of all the social stream integration crap Google has infested the Play app with? Can I get rid of all social integration altogether?

How to disable or improve google’s google integration

With the release of Chrome 69, it was discovered that when you log into your Google account, or any Google service for that matter, you will also be automatically logged into Chrome whether you want to or not.

So what’s the big deal?

According to a Adrienne Porter Felt, an engineer and manager on the Google Chrome team, it is not a big deal and this should just be seen an visual indicator that the user is logged into Google, but does not mean that data is actually being uploaded.

Think of it as adding “yo FYI you’re currently logged in to Gmail” in the corner of the browser window. That’s what the feature does. It’s different from the feature you seem to be talking about which we call sync, that has privacy implications.

On the other hand, Matthew Green, a cryptography professor at Johns Hopkins university, feels that this is a really big deal as it associates a browser with a Google account, which should never happen unless you choose to login to Chrome. Even if browsing data is not uploaded and sync is not enabled, there is data that could be gathered simply by the authentication process alone.

I’m still annoyed that Chrome has gone to mandatory Google login — exactly the same way Android did (and has received enormous criticism for) — and people at Google are acting like they’re surprised people are upset.

To make matters worse, by forcing users to login to Chrome when you use another Google service, such as Gmail, Chrome is placed into a completely different category in the Chrome privacy policy. For example, the privacy policy states that once you are signed in, various information is uploaded to Google.

When you sign in to the Chrome browser or a Chromebook with your Google Account, your personal browsing data is saved on Google’s servers and synced with your account. This type of information can include:

  • Browsing history
  • Bookmarks
  • Tabs
  • Passwords and Autofill information
  • Other browser settings, like installed extensions

These settings are automatically loaded for you anytime you sign in to Chrome on other computers and devices. To customize the specific information that you synchronize, use the “Settings” menu.

To users, this is downright confusing as on one hand you are being told that your data is not being uploaded unless you turn on sync, but the privacy policy states that data will be uploaded simply by signing in.

The fact that Google has decided forcibly sign you into the browser without your permission also causes Green to be concerned that one day they may decide to just start synchronizing your data when you are not looking.

“If you didn’t respect my lack of consent on the biggest user-facing privacy option in Chrome (and didn’t even notify me that you had stopped respecting it!) why should I trust any other consent option you give me?” stated Green in an article on why he’s no longer using Chrome. “What stops you from changing your mind on that option in a few months, when we’ve all stopped paying attention?”

Does Chrome actually synch without your permission?

When you log directly into Chrome, one of the features that is automatically enabled is sync. This feature automatically synchronizes your bookmarks, history, passwords, and other settings with your Google account.

Once sync is enabled, it is clearly shown when you go into settings.

Porter, though, has stated that when you are forcibly logged into Chrome by logging into a Google account, this Chrome login is simply being used as a visual indicator and sync is not enabled in the browser.

Sync is not turned on unless you later turn it on.

This appears to be true, as if you are forcibly logged into Chrome and open the settings, it shows that sync is disabled.

While sync is not automatically enabled, it is still confusing when it comes to the user experience. Furthermore, while sync is not enabled, it is not clear as to what other information may be collected simply by the authentication process.

How to disable being forced to login to Chrome

If you want to continue using Chrome, but do not want your Google login state to be synchronized with the browser, you can turn it off using the account-consistency Chrome flag, which has the following description.

To disable “Identity consistency”, you can follow these steps:

  1. Open Chrome
  2. Type chrome://flags/#account-consistency in the address bar and press enter.
  3. When the “Identity consistency between browser and cookie jar” flag is displayed, set it to Disabled.

With this feature disabled, you will no longer be forcibly logged into Chrome when logging into any other Google service such as Gmail or your Google account.

Developer Releases privacy-centric Ungoogled-Chromium

For those looking to use a more privacy-centric, but older version of Chrome, you can try out a third-party fork of Chrome called Ungoogled-Chromium.

“ungoogled-chromium is Google Chromium, sans integration with Google,” states the repository’s description. “It also features some changes to enhance privacy, control, and transparency.”

According to the project these changes try to improve privacy by doing the following:

  • Disable or remove offending services and features that communicate with Google or weaken privacy
  • Strip binaries from the source tree, and use those provided by the system or build them from source
  • Disable features that inhibit control and transparency, and add or modify features that promote them (these changes are minor and do not have significant impacts on the general user experience)

For those who do not want to compile the source and just use a precompiled binary, there are versions for Linux, macOS, and Windows. The Linux and macOS versions have newer Chrome 68 builds and Windows has an available build from Chrome 67.

Robots.txt file

Your robots.txt file is a file on your website that search engine crawlers read to see what pages they should and should not index. Learn how to set up your robots.txt file in HubSpot.

Google and other search engines can’t retroactively remove pages from results after you implement the robots.txt file method. While this tells bots not to crawl a page, search engines can still index your content (e.g., if there are inbound links to your page from other websites). If your page has already been indexed and you want to remove it from search engines retroactively, it’s recommended to use the “No Index” meta tag method instead.

“No index” meta tag

Please note: if you choose to use the “No Index” meta tag method, please be aware that it should not be combined with the robots.txt file method. Search engines need to begin crawling the page in order to see the “No Index” meta tag and the robots.txt file prevents crawling altogether.

A “no index” meta tag is a string of code entered into the head section of a page’s HTML that tells search engines not to index the page.

  • In your HubSpot account, navigate to your website pages, landing pages, or blog.
  • Click the name of a specific page or blog post.
  • In the content editor, click the Settings tab.
  • Click Advanced Options.
  • In the Head HTML section, copy and paste the following code:

If you want to block files in your HubSpot file manager (e.g., a PDF document) from being indexed by search engines, you must select a connected subdomain for the file(s) and use the file URL to block web crawlers.

How HubSpot handles requests from a user agent

If you’re setting a user agent string to test crawl your website and are seeing a message of access denied, this is expected behavior. Google is still crawling and indexing your site.

The reason you see this message is because HubSpot only allows requests from the googlebot user agent coming from IPs that are owned by Google. T o protect HubSpot-hosted sites from attackers or spoofers, r equests from other IP addresses will be denied. HubSpot does this for other search engine crawlers as well, such as BingBot, MSNBot, and Baiduspider.
