How to disable screenshots on your apple watch

Taking pictures of your device screen, or screenshots, is a pretty useful feature. Rather than describing something that you see on your device, or even trying to take a picture of it with something else, you can simply use a built=in feature of the device that can capture what is shown on the screen.

Your iPhone has this ability, and so does your Apple Watch. Simply press the side button and the crown, then your watch screen will flash, and the picture will be stored in your iPhone’s camera roll. But you may not like this feature, or find that you are often taking screenshots accidentally. Fortunately you can turn off Apple Watch screenshots by following our tutorial below.

Did you know that it’s possible to capture Apple Watch screenshots after a simple settings change? Find out how in today’s pro tip and it’ll be easier than ever to share snaps of your favorite Apple Watch apps and watch face setups.

Apple disables the ability to snap Apple Watch screenshots by default. That may be to prevent accidental captures, or because the feature is less likely to be used on your wrist than it is on iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

So, if you find yourself wanting to take an Apple Watch screenshot, here’s how to enable it.

How to capture Apple Watch screenshots

First, you’ll need to make a quick settings change by following the steps below:

  1. Open the Settings app on Apple Watch.
  2. Tap General and then tap Screenshots.
  3. Tap the toggle to Enable Screenshots.

Three simple steps.

With screenshots now active, you can press both the Digital Crown and side button simultaneously to capture a snap of any screen. Screenshots will now remain enabled until you disable them yourself. Press the Digital Crown and side button together to take your shot.

Any screenshots you capture on Apple Watch are automatically saved to your Camera Roll on your iPhone. From there, you can edit, annotate, and share them in the same way you might with a screenshot captured on iPhone itself.

Note: If you use Watch for fitness, you might know that pressing the Digital Crown and side button simultaneously also pauses workout tracking. This shortcut will continue to work after enabling screenshots, but it will also capture a screenshot every time you pause.

You’re in luck, I spoke to Apple Support today and they offered this tip:

In the Apple Watch App, under General > Watch orientation, flip your view to “Digital Crown on (other side)”.

I also switched my band around because I like it how it was.

While flipping the watch around does take care of the problem, I really think Apple is missing the obvious thing: screenshots are not particularly useful on the watch, so you should be able to turn it off.

PS I will be giving feedback, too.
