How to enable windows 10’s new light theme

Microsoft’s Windows 10 version 1903 aka “May 2019 Update” includes a new improved Light Theme. Here is a look at how to turn it on and customize it.

Microsoft will start rolling out Windows 10 version 1903 aka “May 2019 Update” to all users toward the end of this month. We have shown you some of the notable new features included with this new feature update. And one of those is a new “Light Theme” that gives the OS a fresh and clean feel.

The Light theme has been overhauled in this release. It is a system-wide elegant theme that brings lighter colors to the Start menu, taskbar, Action Center, touch keyboard, and other elements of the OS. It even includes a new default desktop wallpaper.

We’ve shown you how to turn on the Dark Theme on Windows 10 (which has been available for a while). And here we’ll take a look at going the other way and enable the new Light Theme.

Enable Light Theme on Windows 10 May 2019 Update

To enable the new theme, head to Settings > Personalization > Colors. Then select “Light” from the dropdown menu under the “Choose your color” section.

That’s all there is to it. Once you have it selected, you’ll see the new changes throughout the operating system including the taskbar, Action Center, Start menu, Windows Timeline, and more.

It’s also worth mentioning you can change the theme by heading to Settings > Personalization > Themes and from there select the “Windows Light” theme.

If you want to go back to the traditional light theme you can. Go to Settings > Personalization > Colors. Then under “Choose your color” select Custom. For the “Choose your default Windows mode” select Dark. And under “Choose your default app mode” select Light from the dropdown.

As you can see, Microsoft is giving you more new options to change the look and feel of Windows 10. Personally, I think the company could do a much better job with its dark theme. Hopefully, we’ll see some improvements to it in future versions. Still, the new “Light Theme” does look nice and clean and makes your system feel newer. It’s a more notable improvement that distinguishes it from other Windows 10 feature updates.

Microsoft has a new light mode for those who aren’t ready to join the dark side. Dark mode has been all the rage of late, but not everyone is a fan of the inky interface. For those folks, the May 2019 update introduces a new light theme to Windows 10 that brightens up the operating system.

The new light mode will be the default look for Windows 10, replacing a UI that featured several dark elements, including the taskbar. Now Windows 10 will have a consistent transparent white appearance across all menus and apps.

Of course, if you prefer darker tones you can still follow this guide to enable Dark Mode . And you can also enable Dark Mode in Chrome if you use Google’s browser. If you’d prefer to create your own theme , be sure to check out this breakdown of how to do so. You can also install third-party themes from the Windows Store or make less dramatic changes to the Windows 10 UI by customizing your desktop background .

With that said, here are a few simple steps on how to enable light mode in Windows 10.

How to enable light theme in Windows 10

1. Press the start menu in the bottom-left corner of your screen.

2. Select the settings gear icon.

3. Select Personalization from the Windows settings screen.

4. Press on Colors from the left-hand sidebar.

5. Scroll to the bottom of the page and choose “Light” from the drop-down menu.

Enabling the new Light Mode Theme in Windows 10

In case you don’t know, Windows now comes with an all-mew Light Mode theme which gives a light accent color to the Taskbar, Start and Notification Area. Aside from that, it also brings new improvements and features. This new theme is somewhere between dark and complete white and in this post, you will be guided on how you can enable this new feature in your Windows 10 computer.

Although the Light Mode sure looks stunning and a lot of users love it, it actually switches all the apps plus the Taskbar and Start Menu to light mode which was not the case before. In addition, the icons in the system tray area as well as the notification center are also inverted. To resolve that, you there are several ways you can customize the light mode theme as well as activate it in the Windows 10 v1903. How? Refer to each one of the options given below.

Option 1 – Via Theme settings

How to enable windows 10’s new light theme

Windows 10 brought a new theme called “Windows (Light)” which will enable the light mode automatically and will set the accent colors to automatic. This will also apply the new Windows 10 wallpaper on your desktop. To enable Windows (Light), all you have to do is right click on the desktop and select Themes from the left menu. After that, select the Windows (Light) option under the Change Themes section. This will apply the Windows (Light) mode.

Option 2 – Via Color settings

The second and more customizable way to activate the light mode is via Settings. Aside from the Light and Dark, Windows also introduced a Custom color option which allows you to decide the default Windows and App mode independently. To enable Light mode via Settings, refer to the steps below.

  • First, open Settings and go to Personalization.
  • After that, select “Colours” from the left menu.
  • Next, select Light under the “Choose your colour” section to activate the light mode in Windows 10. This will activate light mode all over your computer.

Note: If after activating light mode, you find that you don’t like it and you want to keep things as they were before (Light App Mode and Dark Windows Mode), you can achieve that using the Custom option. All you have to do is select Custom from the drop-down menu to decide the default Windows and app mode independently. After that, select light under the default app mode and dark under the default Windows mode so that you can keep things as they were before the update. On the other hand, you can also try the opposite version of the light Windows mode and Dark app mode since Windows increased the level of customizability which allows users to use an option of a completely light mode.

Windows 10’s May 2019 update (v1903) brings a lot of new features. Some of those features include but not limited to like Windows Sandbox, easy way to pause Windows updates, and a new Light theme to compliment the already available dark theme. In this post let me show how you can enable Windows 10’s new Light theme.

Enable Windows 10’s Light Theme

Just like with the dark theme, enabling the light theme is pretty easy and straightforward. In fact, Microsoft even made it easy to set custom color modes for both Windows and Apps.

1. Open the PC Settings app and go to Personalization page. Here, go to the Colors page appearing on the left panel.

2. On the right panel, select Light from the drop-down menu under “Choose your color” section.

Of course, Microsoft has updated most if not all the icons to match and appear properly on the light color mode.

Use Dark and Light Themes at the Same Time

Microsoft also made it possible to use the custom theme where you can set separate themes for Windows and Apps. For instance, you can set the light theme for Windows and dark theme for apps.

To set a custom theme, simply select Custom from the drop-down menu. Next, select the theme of your choice for Windows mode and App mode. As an example, I’m selecting Light for Windows mode and Dark for App mode.

In case you are wondering, Windows Mode is nothing but the Start Menu, Taskbar, Action Center, and other Windows components. App mode is nothing but regular apps like the PC Settings app, File Explorer, etc.

To celebrate the new light theme in Windows 10, Microsoft also added new wallpaper. You can set that wallpaper by going to Personalization -> Background and then select the Windows 10 Light theme wallpaper. That is it.

In general, Windows chooses the appropriate size of the wallpaper for your computer. However, you might sometimes need high-resolution wallpaper, like 4K. Thankfully, Windows has different resolution wallpapers stored in the C drive.

To access the 4K Windows Light theme wallpaper, open the File Explorer, enter the “C:\Windows\Web\4K\Wallpaper\Windows” path in the address bar and press Enter. You will be taken to the folder where Windows stores all the different size wallpapers. Find the img0_3840x2160.jpg file and that is your 4K wallpaper.

Windows 10 now comes with an all-new Light Mode Theme that gives a light accent color to Start, Taskbar and Notification Area. Apart from this. It brings in a lot of new features and improvements. This new theme is somewhere between dark and complete white. Let us see how to enable it.

Enable Light Mode Theme on Windows 10

The Light Mode looks stunning, and you are sure to love it. It switches all the apps plus the Taskbar and Start Menu to light mode – which was not the case earlier. Also, the icons in the system tray area and notification center are inverted. There are quite a few ways to customize and activate light mode on Windows 10 v1903, and here is how.

1] Using Themes Settings

Windows 10 brings in a new theme called Windows (Light). The theme will automatically enable the light mode, will set accent colours to automatic and will apply the new Windows 10 wallpaper on your desktop screen.

To enable thisWindows (Light) theme, follow these steps:

  1. Right click on desktop and select
  2. Select Themes from the left menu.
  3. Select Windows (Light) under the Change Theme section, and you are good to go.

2] Using Colors Settings

Another and more customizable method to activate the light mode will be by using settings. Apart from Light and Dark, Windows has also introduced a Custom color option that lets you decide default Windows and App mode independently. To enable light mode from settings, follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings and then go to Personalization
  2. Select Colours from the left menu.
  3. Under Choose your colour select Light to activate the light mode on Windows.

The light mode will be activated across everything. If you do not like the new light mode and wish to keep the things as they were already (Light App Mode and Dark Windows Mode), it can be achieved via the Custom option.

Selecting Custom from the dropdown will give you the ability to decide default Windows and app mode independently. Select light under default app mode and dark under default Windows mode to make things as they were before the update.

You can also try the opposite version of it to have light Windows mode and Dark app mode. Windows has increased the level of customizability here, and giving users an option of a completely light mode is amazing. The new Light Mode affects the Taskbar, Start Menu, Notification Centre, and the System Tray area.

Last week, Microsoft started testing a brand new light theme with Insiders that’s expected to ship in April 2019 with the 19H1 release. Although it’s not finished, this early implementation of the light theme is a great start and an excellent addition for those who love options.

The new light theme in Windows 10 19H1 turns not only themes your apps, but the Windows Shell too. This includes the taskbar, Start Menu, Action Center, notifications, touch keyboard, and context menus (in some places) which gives the light theme a much more consistent feel.

How to enable windows 10’s new light theme

Like dark mode however, it isn’t entirely consistent. There are still some areas of the OS that are themed dark, such as Cortana and My People. Since it’s still early days however, we should expect to see Microsoft theme those areas as well to match the rest of the OS design when light mode is enabled.

Many icons on the taskbar will switch their icons from white to black if the developer has provided the assets for it, which makes your open apps easier to see on the lighter taskbar. If a developer hasn’t provided the assets for light theme, Windows will automatically put those icons into a colored box to ensure you can see them.

Here’s a cool detail. Windows will put the icons for Win32 programs from the Store in colored boxes when using light theme to ensure their icons are still easily visible (see Slack and Spotify) pic.twitter.com/mGQz26fz1J

This only appears to happen with apps from the Microsoft Store, however, and now with Win32 programs downloaded from the web. This means that if you use an app with a white icon from the internet, you will have a hard time seeing that app open in the taskbar unless the developer provides a light theme version of their icon.

The other issue with the light theme right now is that Fluent Design reveal and translucency effects are a little harder to see within the Windows Shell right now. I assume this is just down to tweaking things a bit, but I’d love for the reveal effect to be darker when light theme is enabled so that you can see it like you can when dark mode is enabled.

Overall, this first version of light theme for Windows 10 is great. It’s clean, fresh take on the Windows 10 UI that I’m sure many people are going to enjoy. There are a few teething issues right now, but nothing out of the ordinary for a pre-release feature that’s still months away from being finalized. We can’t wait to see how this improves.

Yesterday, those on Windows 10 received another cumulative OS update that included numerous security patches and other undeclared improvements. Following our detailed how-to on upgrading from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro, users noticed that the update also brought something new: Windows Spotlight.

Indeed, our Windows 10 Home Single Language edition has had this for what seems like a few days. Now, our Dell XPS 13 with Windows 10 Home has it as well, although the ‘voting’ area is not yet active.

However, this feature, for whatever reason, appears to be missing from the Pro version of the OS. It is not clear why that is, but it is something likely to be fixed in a future update.

How to enable windows 10’s new light theme

Windows Spotlight, announced at Build, is akin to Bing Images of the Day. However, the feature lets you say yay or nay on images. The idea is that users can like certain pictures, and Microsoft procures new, similar images for a user’s lock screen. Saying ‘no’ to a particular style e.g. abstract imagery versus nature, shapes what Microsoft randomly chooses next.

The feature is a way to refresh regularly the Windows 10 lockscreen to keep things both unique and personal.

Here is how to enable it on Windows 10 Home.

How to enable Windows Spotlight
