Take a moment and scan your immediate environment; does it motivate you? It is evident that we continuously subject ourselves to suffocating work environments. Once you inspire yourself by being proactive in smaller tasks, you’ll be better able to roll up your sleeves and do some heavy lifting on the bigger stuff.

The second thing to do if you’ve lost your mojo is to follow these three, simple words: Just start it. I remember an instructor in graduate school telling us that if you simply begin to do a task, motivation kicks in within 10 seconds.

You read that right: 10 seconds may be all it takes to shift from “I don’t want to do it” to “I’m already doing it, so I might as well continue.”

Let’s say, for example, you’re trying to get yourself to go to the gym. Get up right now and gather your workout clothes and/or shoes. Fill a water bottle or do whatever it takes to prep for a trip to the gym.

You’re far more likely to follow through and actually go if you start doing anything related to your goal.

Between these two tools—inspiring yourself through small actions or committing to just 10 seconds of activity—you’ll be able to make more progress than you would by sitting there berating yourself for being stuck.

How to feel inspired when you've lost motivation

I recently got this reader question: “I have lost all motivation. I have no goals, aspirations, or dreams. Any suggestions for that?”

This is a common predicament, so I’ll answer.

1. Don’t panic—it could be a temporary blip.

Here’s a quick story. Over the last 18 months, I’ve had many rounds of IVF trying unsuccessfully to conceive a second child before my biological clock runs out. This has been incredibly expensive and demoralizing. A few months ago, I got the news that yet another round had been unsuccessful. There would be a three-month gap before I could try again.

I thought, “OK, I’ve got three months to focus on something else.” Well, nothing felt meaningful compared to a baby. I had a sudden urge to buy a Melania Trump “I don’t care, do you?” jacket.

Logically, I could see that goals related to fitness or work were meaningful, but they didn’t feel that way at all. Success in those domains seemed to pale compared to the joy of a squishy human. Even travel, which I normally live for, felt not worth bothering about (e.g., planning trips for post-COVID.) Something great happened career-wise, and I was barely excited.

Loss of motivation is part of a constellation of symptoms that happen when people are sad. We’re wired this way. Sad, depressed emotions trigger a reaction that involves the urge to retreat, withdraw, and reflect. While this might seem maladaptive, it’s not entirely. It’s part of a response that’s designed to keep us safe and protected. Our brain instinctively signals to us to step back and cocoon, instead of plowing on.

Why? If we’re upset, pushing ahead could be ill-advised or dangerous. Through evolution, we’ve built-in a lot of false alarms, so even if it wouldn’t be dangerous in 99/100 situations, we’re wired to prioritize the 1/100. When you feel low, you’ll overthink and feel sluggish. Low emotions are a signal to pause, reflect, and potentially change direction. Sometimes the signal is a false signal. Sometimes it isn’t.

If you don’t know this is how emotions work, it would be easy to panic and start to thinking anxious thoughts like: “Why do I feel like this? Something is wrong! What’s wrong? What am I going to do? What’s going to become of me?” Sometimes people even fear a loss of functioning and losing ground they’ve built up, e.g., losing their job because they become unable to perform it due to poor motivation or concentration.

The problem? This panicky reaction can intensify people’s sense of feeling lost, scared, and at sea. And it can intensify people’s negative ruminations about themselves and who they are. If you think you’ll screw up everything you try, then why bother trying?

In most cases, these types of emotion and motivation blips are temporary. They will last anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks if you employ good coping strategies. For example, my feelings lasted about two weeks. Those feelings have returned a bit lately, but on and off.

Even clinical depression is usually episodic. In those cases, the feelings can last months if you don’t pursue treatment. But either way, it’s not likely to be a permanent state.

Understanding healthy coping strategies will reduce the time that those periods of no motivation last.

2. Act your way to motivation.

Action drives motivation more than motivation drives action.

Knowing this, I started a structured effort to improve my running and fitness. I also took on a new challenge with my work.

Here’s the critical point: When I started, those goals didn’t feel super meaningful, but the more I did them, the more meaningful they felt.

3. Shift away from goals that don’t motivate you.

I refocused my work goals on being helpful to people, rather than trying to be popular. This felt more meaningful, both in concept and in practice as I did my work each day.

4. Plan for low concentration.

When people feel low, their concentration suffers too. Therefore, pick actions to improve your motivation that aren’t heavily dependent on concentration. For example, it might not be the best time for a goal like “read a book a week.” Likewise, it’s not the best time for ultra-intense goals that require all-day focus. When I feel low, I usually set my expectations at around half my usual output, but I try to make that twice as meaningful.

5. Rule out physical factors.

Check some basics that could be causing your feelings and mental state. For example, low Vitamin D, low iron, thyroid issues, or low B12.

6. Help-seeking might feel like a waste of effort, but it isn’t.

When people feel a very profound, pervasive loss of motivation and interest in life, it’s understandable if it feels like nothing is going to help with that. A few nights ago, I had a mood blip in which I felt intensely sad. That intensity was gone by the next morning. The feelings were still there but weren’t as strong or disabling. When you feel very intensely “blah,” it’s hard to believe anything will help you shake it. It’s easy to feel scared that it might last forever no matter what you do. This thinking trap stops people from seeking professional help, which has a good chance of helping your mood.

If you had a broken arm, you wouldn’t overthink whether to seek professional help. If you think you have clinical depression, do the same.

7. Try more new things.

When you try new things, you expand yourself. Sometimes when we feel low, we’re simply bored with the same old activities, people, perspectives, and routines. If you want to discover dreams and goals, try many new things, without too much expectation. When you do this, eventually some new goals or dreams will emerge from that.

When I was feeling low, I took a day trip to a large, beautiful state park. The visit didn’t go that well because my child wasn’t enjoying herself, but despite that, it really boosted me out of my funk. My point here is that things you try don’t need to go perfectly to be helpful. (More on this topic in this post.)

Build your repertoire of strategies to break free of a period of no motivation. This is essential because a strategy that works some of the time might not work all of the time. Or, it might not always be possible (for example, if you can’t exercise due to an injury.)

Feeling a loss of interest can make it harder to do the things you need to do each day. It can leave you feeling listless, disinterested, and unmotivated to do much of anything at all. There might be things that used to interest you, but now you can’t seem to find the motivation or inspiration to do them.

Known as anhedonia, this feeling can cause people to lose interest in activities they used to enjoy. It also causes people to not enjoy or experience pleasure when engaging in things that they used to love doing.

Why You Feel a Loss of Interest

Loss of interest is one of the key symptoms of depression. In addition to depression, loss of interest can also be caused by:

  • Anxiety
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Schizophrenia
  • Substance use
  • Stress

It is also important to note that loss of interest is not necessarily linked to a mental disorder. It can also be caused by things such as overwork, relationship problems, boring activities, or just plain feeling stuck in a rut.

This can create a cycle from which it’s hard to break free. Because of decreased interest, you might stop spending time with others and engaging in things that normally help you feel less stressed. This increased isolation, decreased activity, and lowered social support can then play a part in making you feel more anxious and depressed.

What to Do

Fortunately, there are some steps that you can take to feel better when you are experiencing a loss of interest. Here are some things that may help.

Focus on Staying Active

A loss of interest can make it difficult to stick to an exercise routine but focus on getting some physical activity in each day. Exercise has been shown to have a number of positive effects on mental health, including improving mood and decreasing symptoms of depression.   Even going for a brisk walk each day can help.

Get Enough Rest

Lack of sleep can have a negative impact on your mental health. For example, one study found that having insomnia led to a two-fold increase in the risk for developing depression.   So if you are struggling with a loss of interest, make sure that you are practicing good sleep habits and giving yourself plenty of time each night to get quality rest.

Take Small Steps

While it may not be possible to throw yourself into the activities you normally love with the same gusto as before, it can help to do little things each day. If there is a hobby that you normally love but have lost interest in, challenge yourself to learn something new about it. Or break up a larger project into much smaller steps and set aside a little time each day to tackle just one thing.

Make Plans

Even though it can be difficult to get inspired, you may find it helpful to make plans for things that you want to do in the future. Research has found that planning for the future, known as proactive coping, can help improve resilience.  

Giving yourself things to look forward to and looking for things to get excited about can help you cope with the lack of interest you might be feeling at the moment.

Find Support

When you’re feeling disinterested, it can be helpful to turn to friends and family for support. Let them know that you’re struggling with this lack of interest.

Sometimes just spending time around other people can lift your mood. Other people’s enthusiasm can also be contagious, so you might find that their zest for different activities starts to rub off on you as well.

How to Get Help

If feeling a lack of interest is making it difficult to cope, it is important to reach out for help. Talk to your doctor about what you are feeling, especially if these feelings are accompanied by other symptoms such as low mood, irritability, or feelings of worthlessness.

Diagnosis

Your doctor will ask questions about the symptoms you are experiencing. They may also perform a physical exam and lab tests to help rule out any underlying medical conditions that might be contributing to how you’ve been feeling.

Your doctor may then recommend different treatments depending on your diagnosis. For example, if you are diagnosed with depression, your doctor may suggest psychotherapy, medication, or a combination of the two. You can also consider just seeking help directly from a mental health professional without first seeing your primary care physician or nurse practitioner.

There are a number of different treatment approaches like psychotherapy that can be used to address loss of interest including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to help change your thoughts and behaviors. Antidepressants or other medications may also be prescribed to help elevate your mood, although it may take some time for these drugs to begin working.

You might also want to consider trying online therapy or a mental health app to help address feelings of lost interest. Mobile apps can be useful for setting goals, offering mental health tips, and tracking your progress. Online therapy can connect you with a trained therapist who can offer support and advice delivered by email, video chat, text message, or phone.

But sometimes this feeling can be a sign of a mental health condition such as depression. If a loss of interest is making it difficult to cope or interfering with your life, it is important to talk to a doctor or mental health professional about how you are feeling.

Depression can worsen over time, so the sooner you get help, the sooner you will begin feeling better and able to regain your passion for the things that bring you joy.

How to feel inspired when you've lost motivation

A semester is months-long. When you’re constantly studying and working on assignments, you can fall into a serious burnout – and sometimes, this decline in your energy and motivation is so gradual that you don’t notice it happening.

If you’re feeling burnt out, stop and think: What can you do right now to help yourself?

  1. You can allow yourself one more evening of low productivity, guilt-free.

This first suggestion may seem counterintuitive, but gifting your mind a break might be necessary in order for you to bounce back. None of us are able to keep our mind working hard 24/7, otherwise, we’d be computers – and hey, even computers need to recharge.

So, take an evening to tend to yourself. “Self-care” gets thrown around a lot these days—but what does realistic self-care look like for you? An extended beauty routine, cooking yourself a nutritious meal, getting an extra hour of sleep? Give yourself what you need to feel relaxed and ready to tackle tomorrow’s productivity.

  1. You can plan tomorrow’s study schedule.

Whether you love or hate to-do lists, experts have found them to reduce anxiety and increase productivity. This fact is especially true when to-do lists are specific about times and tasks.

This is not to say that every minute of your day has to be determined by your schedule. A schedule that is too rigid might overwhelm you when, inevitably, you don’t finish a task in the time you allotted. Plan for tasks to take longer than you’d expect! Also, schedule specific tasks. For example, plan to read Chapters 1-3 of your textbook from 2:00-3:00 pm, instead of vaguely planning to read from your textbook in the afternoon. Planning specifically will ground you – you’ll know exactly what to accomplish and when.

  1. You can plan tomorrow’s – preferably early – morning routine.

We recommend an early start to your day, and science does too. If waking up early isn’t easy for you, the best tip I can share, which helped me, a former (and very stubborn) night owl, to become a morning person, is to truly want to wake up early. Remind yourself that a good morning sets a positive tone for the rest of your day.

Just like self-care is unique to you, your most conducive, motivating morning routine is unique to you. Craft a routine that you will look forward to, which allows you some warm-up time for the productivity planned for the day, and will also accommodate any potential procrastination later in the day. Try a digital-less hour of exercise, meditation, and reading to inspire you to tackle the day with enthusiasm.

Now, moving forward, how can you rejuvenate your study routine and prevent future burnout?

  1. Mix up your study environment.

Research consistently finds that varying where you study increases memory retention and focus. If you tend to study in the same place, try working in different libraries, cafés, and random nooks around campus – you might surprise yourself with increased productivity in a new environment.

Alternatively, if you know you study best at home, discover where in your home you are most productive, and consider cleaning up or redecorating your space to imitate the psychological effect that a new environment has on the working brain.

  1. Reward yourself (in moderation).

Positive reinforcement! Plan a reward for yourself for an accomplishment – maybe a particularly daunting task – and keep it in the back of your mind while you work. This reward system works best when you are strict about rewards. It’s kind of like babysitting yourself. Simply stated, if you haven’t finished your veggies, you don’t get dessert (except that in this case, veggies are a 10-page paper and dessert is an episode of your favourite show).

  1. Take frequent, planned breaks. Use a timer if you struggle to get back to work after a break.

“Planned” is italicized for a reason. If you’re vague about when and how long a break is, it will welcome an opportunity to scroll through Instagram for however long your eyes can stand it. One of the best things to do is to set timers for work time and break time. When you know a timer will go off in, say, 10 minutes, you might be more likely to take full advantage of that break and actually get back to work when it ends.

If you also set a timer for your work period, you might work more efficiently in order to beat the clock. If you find yourself trying to complete as many tasks as possible before your microwave beeps, you’re familiar with the thrill that accompanies a race against time.

  1. Allow yourself some comfort while you study.

Sometimes, a comfort as simple as your favourite hot drink can motivate you to work harder and longer. If you’re dreading your schoolwork because you envision it as a laborious, uncomfortable activity, try giving yourself a little more ease while you work. For example, work in your coziest sweatpants or with music (that is, a type that won’t distract you). With consistency, you might even begin to associate a particular comfort with working. I find that when I routinely study with the same playlist, the music starts to trigger my brain’s work mode.

  1. Schedule a completion timeline for big assignments.

Agendas = love. Why? Because when you plan in advance, you can stay on track with big assignments. If you’re talented at procrastination, it’s a great idea to assign yourself due dates for smaller tasks that make up larger projects. Planning in advance – even weeks and months in advance – can drastically improve the way you work. If you have an essay due in two months, start planning a timeline for completion as soon as possible, assigning everything from choosing a thesis to completing your conclusion. A monster of an assignment becomes more approachable when broken down into little baby monsters hidden in a trench coat.

A strong work ethic is definitely admirable, but remember to take care of yourself. Your wellbeing guides your success. Beyond these study tips, if you’re feeling burnt out, reach out to a friend who can support you.
