He had about half the students write for about 10 minutes about their life’s direction. The other half wrote about the last movie they saw. They were all then given packets that listed the name of every stop. When they got to a stop, they were asked to assess how they felt and how much they felt that way by placing an “X” in a box next to negative emotions such as feeling scared, fearful, alone or distressed.

It turned out that the students who wrote about the last movie they saw experienced the expected levels of stress as the percentage of people of different ethnicity increased. But the students who wrote about their sense of purpose reported no feelings of increased stress at all.

More research is needed, but Burrow says his findings suggest that having “a sense of purpose may protect people against stress,” with all of its harmful effects, including greater risk of heart disease. And that may explain why people with a sense of purpose live longer.

So how do we break that cycle?

Andrew says that the very first step in countering self-sabotaging behavior is to be aware of its existence in the first place. We need to look at how we’re unconsciously, or consciously, undermining what we want.

And not always, but often we need to understand where that undermining or sabotage is coming from. And normally, it’s coming from a place where we had a little dream, and we were heartbroken. Whether it’s about a relationship, or maybe it’s we had a dream of getting grades in school that we didn’t attain.

Without putting in the work to mend the heart after our disappointments in life, we are destined to be stuck in place, unable to move forward for the fear of getting hurt again.

TRANSFORMING OUR LIVES FOR THE BETTER

Now that Andrew has made us think about how much “baggage” we’re all carrying around, how do we begin to improve? It starts with a willingness to transform, and takes a personal commitment to achieve wellness and stability. One of the first ways to do that is to accept change, and not be afraid of it. Again going back to our pitfalls and harmful behavioral patterns, Andrew warns there is a misconception about change. In so many instances, people think “change” means getting rid of something. It does not.

The fear of change can bring on stress and anxiety. The energy we spend trying to avoid or destroy our fears, only wears us out, and actually makes the fear stronger.

Just like in nature, you can’t get rid of anything, you can only transform it into something else. “If you have water, you can turn it to ice, you can boil it and it goes into steam—but nothing is gone, you just can’t see it anymore. So you don’t transform anything by getting rid of something.”

Instead, learn to coexist with your fears. The power returns to you when you face it and even embrace it.

DISCOVERING OUR PURPOSE

Most of us have pondered, “What is my purpose in life?” Andrew believes there is a strong connection between knowing your purpose and living a happier, more fulfilled life.

So how do we discover our purpose and get on track to a more contented life? According to Andrew, the first thing that we’ll need is something so many of us don’t exercise . patience.

Acknowledging our lack of patience is essential to our ability to embrace change and discover our purpose. But we shouldn’t expect it to happen overnight. As Andrew explains, “There’s that famous prayer “Lord give me patience, now.” You know to really discover our purpose, we need to be willing to spend a little bit of time, a little bit of reflection and say “okay, today is Monday . I don’t have to discover my purpose by Wednesday, or by Friday, or even by next Monday. Starting with the willingness to create a little bit of space around it is the first thing.”

So if we want to discover our purpose, we need to create some space and some reflection time where we can sit with ourselves. And we can reflect on different aspects of our lives—including listening within.

“We have to learn to really listen within, as that’s the best signal. It’s a better teacher than any coach, any therapist, any teacher to really learn to listen to our innate impulses. Because that’s where our dreams are. And that’s where our purpose is.”

A passion is simply a topic or activity that:

  • Comes naturally to you
  • Energizes and lights you up

It can also be akin to an obsession—something that you can’t get enough of. It’s where you go in daydreams or what sometimes keeps you awake and excited at night.

When you fail to honor your true passions, and start moving away from your purpose, your physical self sends out signs of discomfort such as:

  • Low energy or chronic fatigue
  • Feeling trapped, having a pit in your stomach, or digestive disorders
  • Forgetfulness or inability to concentrate
  • Disease, headaches, anxiety, depression, insomnia, addiction

On the contrary, when you follow your passions, and are moving toward your purpose, you experience:

  • Lightness, freedom, and joy
  • Tingling on your skin
  • Abundant energy
  • Relaxed muscles
  • Glowing health
  • Divine timing and synchronicity
  • Magnetic attraction and a natural high

The next time you think about or engage in any passion of yours, notice how your body feels as a result. Once you understand how to use your internal GPS, you will know which passions are truly leading you toward your purpose.

Creating a Strategic Plan to Bring Your Purpose to Life

Once you are clear about which passions are leading you towards true purpose, you may feel called to start a purpose-driven passion project that benefits others.

Bringing your purpose to life requires feedback in the real world, and having a solid plan to launch your passion project is vital to the fulfillment of your purpose. Your passion project plan should:

  • Be built around a specific niche; or use a unique blend of your passions and skills to serve as the answer to a problem faced by a particular segment of the population
  • Have a basic financial plan and structures including a personal savings plan if needed, project expenses, and sales goals.
  • Include specific targeted goals including the objectives of the project. How many people do you want to reach? In what amount of time? How do you want the project to affect your audience? How will you reach your audience?
  • Have a unique brand message and identity as represented in your online presence
  • Present a specific value and voice that is differentiates you from potential competitors in the market

Before starting your passion project you may want to:

  • Ask for advice or mentorship from someone who is a step ahead of where you ultimately want to go
  • Create a positive mindset and using affirmations to build confidence and let go of your fears and doubts
  • Take part-time trainings to develop your passion-based skills in your spare time
  • Become a volunteer to gain experience in an area you are passionate about
  • Find a champion who supports your desires for finding purpose and consulting them often
  • Seek to understand what you care about most, what drives you and what change you want to create in the world. Write it down, have conversations about it, and systematically test your assumptions about what gives you deep purpose
  • Deeply understand how your passions and skills are valued by others

Aligning Passion and Purpose

Ultimately, to know if you have aligned your passions with your purpose through your passion project, your answer should be “yes” to these three questions:

  1. Does my project feel intrinsically natural?
  2. Is it fun and interesting?
  3. Are others and myself getting positive results from it?

Remember, if you are of service to the world, but find yourself miserable, then it’s time to re-evaluate how you are expressing your passions and fulfilling your purpose. Each day, ask yourself these soul profile questions:

  • Who am I?

  • How can I help others? How can I serve?

Question: “What does the Bible say about how to find purpose in life?”

Answer: The Bible is very clear as to what our purpose in life should be. Men in both the Old and New Testaments sought for and discovered life’s purpose. Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, discovered the futility of life when it is lived only for this world. He gives these concluding remarks in the book of Ecclesiastes: “Here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil” (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14). Solomon says that life is all about honoring God with our thoughts and lives and thus keeping His commandments, for one day we will stand before Him in judgment. Part of our purpose in life is to fear God and obey Him.

Another part of our purpose is to see life on this earth in perspective. Unlike those whose focus is on this life, King David looked for His satisfaction in the time to come. He said, “And I—in righteousness I will see your face; when I awake, I will be satisfied with seeing your likeness” (Psalm 17:15). To David, full satisfaction would come on the day when he awoke (in the next life) both beholding God’s face (fellowship with Him) and being like Him (1 John 3:2).

In Psalm 73, Asaph talks about how he was tempted to envy the wicked who seemed to have no cares and built their fortunes upon the backs of those they took advantage of, but then he considered their ultimate end. In contrast to what they sought after, he states in verse 25 what mattered to him: “Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you” (verse 25). To Asaph, a relationship with God mattered above all else in life. Without that relationship, life has no real purpose.

The apostle Paul talked about all he had achieved religiously before being confronted by the risen Christ, and he concluded that all of it was like a pile of manure compared to the excellence of knowing Christ Jesus. In Philippians 3:9-10, Paul says that he wants nothing more than to know Christ and “be found in Him,” to have His righteousness and to live by faith in Him, even if it meant suffering and dying. Paul’s purpose was knowing Christ, having a righteousness obtained through faith in Him, and living in fellowship with Him, even when that brought on suffering (2 Timothy 3:12). Ultimately, he looked for the time when he would be a part of the “resurrection from the dead.”

Our purpose in life, as God originally created man, is 1) glorify God and enjoy fellowship with Him, 2) have good relationships with others, 3) work, and 4) have dominion over the earth. But with man’s fall into sin, fellowship with God is broken, relationships with others are strained, work seems to always be frustrating, and man struggles to maintain any semblance of dominion over nature. Only by restoring fellowship with God, through faith in Jesus Christ, can purpose in life be rediscovered.

The purpose of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. We glorify God by fearing and obeying Him, keeping our eyes on our future home in heaven, and knowing Him intimately. We enjoy God by following His purpose for our lives, which enables us to experience true and lasting joy—the abundant life that He desires for us.

ARE YOU SABOTAGING YOUR SUCCESS?

Think about how many times you’ve told yourself, “I’m never doing that again” only to find yourself repeating that same action—knowing full well it’s a bad decision. Unless people are willing to take a closer look at their lives, actions, reactions, and interactions with others, they will never break the negative habits that keep them in a cycle of killing their own dreams.

Andrew estimates that most people who have dreams and aspirations are actually responsible for their own failure to attain them.

So how do we break that cycle?

Andrew says that the very first step in countering self-sabotaging behavior is to be aware of its existence in the first place. We need to look at how we’re unconsciously, or consciously, undermining what we want.

And not always, but often we need to understand where that undermining or sabotage is coming from. And normally, it’s coming from a place where we had a little dream, and we were heartbroken. Whether it’s about a relationship, or maybe it’s we had a dream of getting grades in school that we didn’t attain.

Without putting in the work to mend the heart after our disappointments in life, we are destined to be stuck in place, unable to move forward for the fear of getting hurt again.

TRANSFORMING OUR LIVES FOR THE BETTER

Now that Andrew has made us think about how much “baggage” we’re all carrying around, how do we begin to improve? It starts with a willingness to transform, and takes a personal commitment to achieve wellness and stability. One of the first ways to do that is to accept change, and not be afraid of it. Again going back to our pitfalls and harmful behavioral patterns, Andrew warns there is a misconception about change. In so many instances, people think “change” means getting rid of something. It does not.

The fear of change can bring on stress and anxiety. The energy we spend trying to avoid or destroy our fears, only wears us out, and actually makes the fear stronger.

Just like in nature, you can’t get rid of anything, you can only transform it into something else. “If you have water, you can turn it to ice, you can boil it and it goes into steam—but nothing is gone, you just can’t see it anymore. So you don’t transform anything by getting rid of something.”

Instead, learn to coexist with your fears. The power returns to you when you face it and even embrace it.

DISCOVERING OUR PURPOSE

Most of us have pondered, “What is my purpose in life?” Andrew believes there is a strong connection between knowing your purpose and living a happier, more fulfilled life.

So how do we discover our purpose and get on track to a more contented life? According to Andrew, the first thing that we’ll need is something so many of us don’t exercise . patience.

Acknowledging our lack of patience is essential to our ability to embrace change and discover our purpose. But we shouldn’t expect it to happen overnight. As Andrew explains, “There’s that famous prayer “Lord give me patience, now.” You know to really discover our purpose, we need to be willing to spend a little bit of time, a little bit of reflection and say “okay, today is Monday . I don’t have to discover my purpose by Wednesday, or by Friday, or even by next Monday. Starting with the willingness to create a little bit of space around it is the first thing.”

So if we want to discover our purpose, we need to create some space and some reflection time where we can sit with ourselves. And we can reflect on different aspects of our lives—including listening within.
