How to fix iphone not ringing problem

Picture this: You’re waiting for an important phone call. You’ve double-checked your iPhone to make sure the ringer is on and you’ve turned the volume all the way up. When the phone rings, you’re going to hear it. 5 minutes go by and you glance at your iPhone, only to find out you’ve missed the important call! Don’t throw your phone at the cat. In this article, I’ll explain why your iPhone won’t ring and I’ll show you exactly how to fix it.

Martha Aron inspired me to write this article when she asked, “My iPhone does not ring on all calls, I miss lots of calls and texts because of this. Can you help me?” Martha, I’m here to help you and everyone else that has missed incoming calls and texts because their iPhone isn’t ringing.

You Probably Know This, But Check Anyway…

If you’re reading this article, you probably already know that for your iPhone to ring, the Ring / Silent switch on the side of your iPhone has to be set to ring.

If the switch is pulled toward the screen, your iPhone’s ringer is turned on. If the switch is pushed toward the back of the iPhone, your iPhone is on silent and you’ll see a small orange stripe next to the switch. You’ll also see the speaker icon on the iPhone display when you flip the switch.

Once you’re sure the Ring / Silent switch is set to ring, make sure your iPhone ringer is turned up so you can hear your iPhone ring when you get a call. You can turn up the ringer volume by pressing the volume up button on the side of your iPhone.

You can also turn up the ringer volume by opening Settings -> Sounds & Haptics. Drag the slider under Ringer And Alerts to the right to turn up the ringer volume on your iPhone. The further you drag the slider to right, the louder the ringer will be.

If your iPhone isn’t making any sound at all, my article about what to do when an iPhone speaker stops working will show you how to fix that problem. If you’ve already done all this, here’s why your iPhone isn’t ringing:

Here’s The Fix: Turn Off Focus Or Do Not Disturb!

Most of the time, the reason an iPhone isn’t ringing for incoming calls is that the user has accidentally turned on Focus (iOS 15 and newer) or Do Not Disturb (iOS 14 and older) feature in Settings. Focus and Do Not Disturb silence calls, alerts, and notifications on your iPhone.

How Do I Know If A Focus Or Do Not Disturb Is Turned On?

The easiest way to tell if a Focus or Do Not Disturb is turned on is to open Control Center and look in the upper right-hand corner of your iPhone, just to the left of the battery icon. If a Focus is enabled, you’ll see the corresponding Focus icon there. If Do Not Disturb is enabled, you’ll see a small moon icon there.

You can schedule a Focus to automatically turn on by opening Settings and tapping Focus. Tap the Focus you’d like to schedule, then tap Add Schedule or Automation.

If you’d like to dive deeper into Do Not Disturb and set up an automatic schedule, instance, head to Settings -> Do Not Disturb to see all the options available to you.

How Do I Turn Off A Focus?

Open Control Center by swiping up from the very bottom of the screen (iPhones without Face ID) or down from the upper right-hand corner of the screen (iPhones with Face ID). Tap on the Focus icon to turn it off.

How Do I Turn Off Do Not Disturb?

Ever since Apple released iOS 7, it’s been easy to turn Do Not Disturb on and off. Open Control Center and tap the moon icon to turn Do Not Disturb on or off.

You can also turn off Do Not Disturb by going to Settings -> Do Not Disturb and turning off the switch next to Do Not Disturb. You’ll know Do Not Disturb is off when the switch is white.

Turn Off “Silence Unknown Callers”

One reason why you have an iPhone ringing problem may be because your block unknown callers feature is turned on. This feature is great for stopping telemarketers and robocalls in their tracks, but unfortunately it also filters out some people that you actually do want to talk to.

To turn this off, head over to Settings -> Phone and turn off the switch next to Silence Unknown Callers. Once you’ve done that, your phone should be able to ring again when someone who isn’t in your contacts tries to call you.

What If My iPhone Still Won’t Ring?

I’ve received a couple of comments from readers who have taken all of the suggestions and whose iPhones still aren’t ringing. If you’ve made it this far and your iPhone isn’t ringing, there’s a good chance you may have a hardware problem.

Often times, when gunk or liquid gets into one of the ports (like the headphone jack or lightning / dock connector), your iPhone thinks there’s something plugged into it, when in fact there isn’t. My article about how to fix an iPhone that’s stuck in headphone mode explains why that happens and how to fix the problem.

It’s a long shot, but you can take an antistatic brush (or toothbrush you’ve never used before) and try to brush out the gunk from your headphone jack or lightning / dock connector port. Antistatic brushes are helpful for cleaning all sorts of electronics, and you can pick up a 3-pack on Amazon for less than $5.

If you’re successful, the issue should resolve itself. Unfortunately, most of the time the damage has already been done. Something has shorted out on the inside of your iPhone, so the only solution is to visit your local Apple Store or use the mail-in options at Apple’s support website to have your iPhone repaired.

“After I have updated to iOS 11.2, my ringtones that I have purchased are not playing when someone calls only plays the Apple ringtone not mine and I have it set in the ringtone, What happened and how to fix it?” – A user from Apple Community.

How to fix iphone not ringing problem

There are many reasons why an iPhone won’t ring, but most of these problems are easy to fix. If your iPhone isn’t ringing when someone calls you, try these tips before concluding that your iPhone needs an expensive repair.

The tips in this article apply to all supported iPhone models and recent iOS versions, including iOS 13, 12, and 11.

How to fix iphone not ringing problem

Causes of the iPhone Not Ringing Problem

If your iPhone isn't ringing, there are several possible culprits:

  • A broken speaker.
  • Mute is turned on.
  • Do Not Disturb (DND) is turned on.
  • You blocked the phone number.
  • You silenced all unknown callers.
  • There's a problem with a ringtone.
  • You're stuck in headphone mode.

How to Fix an iPhone That Won't Ring

Try these common fixes in the order that we present them:

Restart the iPhone. The first step in troubleshooting any device is to restart it. A restart can fix many glitches.

Clean the iPhone speaker. Every sound your iPhone makes—playing music, watching movies, or the ringer from incoming calls—comes from the speaker at the bottom of the device. If you don’t hear the ringer for incoming calls, the speaker may be dirty or broken.

Test the speaker by playing music or a video. Turn up the volume. If you can hear audio, but the volume is too low, or the sound is distorted, clean the speaker.

If you hear no sound, even with the volume turned all the way up, the iPhone speakers may be broken. Learn how to fix iPhone speakers.

Turn off mute. Make sure you haven’t silenced your iPhone and forgotten to turn the ringer back on.

Turn off DND. DND is a useful feature that enables you to silence sounds from calls, texts, and notifications when you don’t want to be bothered. You can turn on DND manually or schedule it, so be sure to check both options.

You can check for DND at a glance. If a moon icon appears in the upper-right corner of the home screen, DND is on. (On iPhone X, the moon icon appears only in Control Center.)

If you schedule DND, you may need to adjust the settings.

Unblock a blocked number. If someone says they called you, but there’s no sign of the call on your iPhone, you may have blocked that person’s number. Apple introduced the ability to block voice calls, FaceTime calls, and text messages in iOS 7. To unblock a blocked number, complete these steps:

  1. Tap Settings > Phone > Blocked Contacts.
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. Tap the red circle beside the blocked number, and then tap Unblock.

How to fix iphone not ringing problem

Disable Silence Unknown Callers. To help users avoid spam calls and robocalls, Apple added a feature in iOS 13 that automatically silences all calls from unknown numbers. If this feature is turned on, you won’t hear calls from numbers that aren’t in the Contacts app. Instead, the iPhone sends them right to voicemail. To disable this feature, select Settings > Phone, and then turn off the Silence Unknown Callers switch.

If you want to keep Silence Unknown Callers turned on but still get calls from certain numbers, add those callers to Contacts.

How to fix iphone not ringing problem

Change a custom ringtone. If your iPhone still doesn’t ring for incoming calls, check your ringtone. If you assigned a custom ringtone to certain people in your Contacts list or changed the default ringtone, a deleted or corrupted ringtone can prevent the phone from ringing when someone calls.

To check the default ringtone, tap Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone, and then select a new ringtone.

If you miss calls from only certain people, open the Phone app, and then complete these steps:

  1. Tap Contacts.
  2. Tap the name of the person whose calls you're missing, and then tap Edit.
  3. Tap Ringtone, and then assign the contact a new ringtone.

How to fix iphone not ringing problem

If the unique ringtone is the source of the problem, find all the contacts to whom you assigned that ringtone and select a new ringtone for each.

Make sure the phone isn’t stuck in Headphone mode. It could be that your iPhone is ringing but sending the audio to the wrong place. In this situation, the iPhone thinks that another audio source is attached to it—like headphones or a Bluetooth device—and tries to ring there instead of through your iPhone speaker.

If None of These Tips Fixed the Problem

If you tried all these tips and still don’t hear your incoming calls, it’s time to consult the experts. Make a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple Store or contact an Apple-authorized service provider, and bring in your iPhone for inspection and repair.

How to fix iphone not ringing problem

In some cases, the user accidentally turns this feature on without even realizing. You can check at a glance to the top-left side of your iPhone screen. 2. Physically check if the Silent switch button is activated.

3. Try to increase the volume of your iPhone to the highest level and then call your number using the other device.

Method 3. Check iPhone Settings

Your iPhone won’t ring if call forwarding is turned on, and you won’t receive calls from people whose number you’ve blocked. Therefore, when you find that your iPhone doesn’t ring, you can check the iPhone settings.

1. Open Settings on the iPhone Home screen and tap Phone.

2.Tap Call Forwarding. If the button is on, tap to turn it off.

Make sure it is not turned on as shown in the picture below:

2. Turned off the “DND” mode

With almost certain guarantee, the reason an iPhone is not ringing or making alert sounds apparently out of the blue is because of the Do Not Disturb feature. It can be unintentionally turned on and lead to all sorts of confusion and missed calls or seemingly ignored text messages. If the silent switch was already off, you want to make sure the “Do Not Disturb” feature isn’t active. To turn it off, go to Settings > Do Not Disturb. Make sure “Manual” and “Scheduled” are off.

Alternatively, flip up from the bottom of the screen and tap the moon icon again so that it’s not highlighted to switch off the DND mode.

How to fix iphone not ringing problem

If your iPhone isn’t ringing properly, there may be several reasons why.

Before you attempt to service your phone for ringer issues, check that your iPhone doesn’t have Do Not Disturb Mode enabled or that it’s not stuck in headphone mode.

You should also make sure that your iPhone isn’t on Silent, you haven’t blocked any numbers, and that any custom ringtones are working properly.

Here are a few tips on how to fix your iPhone if it’s not ringing.

Turn off Do Not Disturb mode

If your phone is in Do Not Disturb mode, incoming calls won’t ring and they’ll go straight to voicemail. When enabled, there’s a crescent moon icon in your status bar. If you see it, here’s how to disable Do Not Disturb mode.

1. Swipe up from the bottom of your Home screen.

2. If the Do Not Disturb button — which looks like a quarter moon — is highlighted, tap it to disable the feature.

Quick tip: Some calls can get through Do Not Disturb mode on iOS if you set up exceptions for specific phone numbers.

Check that your iPhone isn't stuck in headphone mode

It’s possible that your phone is “stuck” in a mode in which it thinks it’s playing the ringtone, but it’s sending it to a device that isn’t connected, like earbuds that aren’t plugged in or a Bluetooth device that isn’t turned on.

Here are a few things you can try to “wake up” your iPhone’s audio connection so it’s working properly:

  • Plug earbuds into your phone and remove them again to coax the phone into recognizing there are no earbuds plugged in.
  • Make sure you’re not connected to another audio device by swiping up on the screen to display the Control Center. Then tap the Airplay icon in the music pane — it looks like a triangle with three circles — and if anything other than the iPhone is selected, choose the iPhone.
  • Enable and disable Airplane mode by tapping the airplane icon in the Control Center.

See if any custom ringtones aren't working

If the phone won’t ring for a specific caller and that person isn’t blocked, then check to see if it’s a custom ringtone you assigned to them that isn’t working.

On iPhones using iOS 12 and earlier, you can change the custom ringtone for a contact. Open the phone app, select their name from your contacts, and tap “Edit” in the top right corner of the contact’s page. Under the “Ringtones” header, select a non-custom ringtone from the list of available options and then do a test call to see if your iPhone still won’t ring.

For iPhone users with iOS 13 or higher, follow these steps to remove a custom ringtone before resetting the tone for a contact.

1. Open the Settings app.

2. Select “Sounds & Haptics.”

3. Choose “Ringtone.”

4. Locate the tone you want to delete from the Ringtones list before swiping left on it.

5. Tap the red “Delete” icon that appears to delete the ringtone.

6. Go back to your contact and assign a different ringtone to their profile.

There are a number of reasons your phone might not be ringing. You might have the mute switch engaged. It's the little slider over the volume buttons. You might have the volume turned down. Check in Settings>Sounds & Haptics. Or, you might have Do Not Disturb enabled. Check Settings>Do Not Disturb.

Have you made sure that you have an audible ringtone selected?

This is a kind of weird one but worth trying.

Go to Settings>Accessibility>Touch and turn on Assistive Touch. Then, go to Customize Top Level Menu. If Mute is not already one of the icons, add it. Exit that screen. Press and hold the Assistive touch button that appears on your screen. Tap Mute, then unmute.

You can turn off Assistive Touch when you're done.

In order to get rid of Assistive Touch, you need to go back to Settings>Accessibility>Touch and turn it off.

It hitting mute/unmute may or may not resolve your problem. It's just something to try.

I followed you through the adding the Assistive Touch button and the Mute icon added. When I press the Assistive Touch Button, I got the Mute/unmute, did that.

I cannot tell if anything happened, I am unable to repeat the Mute/unmute step and the Assistive Touch button doesn't go away.

Could you repeat with "baby steps" the procedure again, please?

I am all screwed up now! Silent Mode on or Ringer on — icon doesn't match label.

With Assistive Touch button on home screen,

–> Shows mute icon muted; unmute icon says "Silent Mode On;

I touch unmuted icon (converting icon the slashed thru –> and iPhone says "Ringer"

If you can’t hear a person’s voice clearly, hear crackling, hear static, or have issues with sound quality, learn what to do.

Check your sound settings

If your device has a Ring/Silent switch, move the switch forward—toward the device’s display—so that orange isn’t showing. If you’re using an iPad, you can also swipe down from the top-right corner to view Control Center and make sure that Silent Mode is off.

Clean your receivers and speakers

Remove all screen protectors, films, or cases from your device. Check the speaker opening to see if it’s blocked or dirty. On iPhone only, make sure that the receiver is not blocked or dirty. If necessary, clean the speaker or receiver opening with a small, soft-bristled brush. Make sure that the brush is clean and dry.

Check the sound on your device

Go to Settings > Sounds (or Settings > Sounds & Haptics), and drag the Ringer and Alerts slider back and forth a few times. If you don’t hear any sound, or if your speaker button on the Ringer and Alerts slider is dimmed, your speaker might need service. Contact Apple Support for iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Try making a call

If you hear sound, try making a call with your iPhone and turn on speakerphone. On iPad or iPod touch, make a FaceTime call. If you still can’t hear, or hear static or crackling, then your network or reception could be the issue. Try to call again later, or from a different location.
