What will your achievement feel like? How will your life unfold differently as a result of your achievement?

If the goal is an object, a trip, or anything that can be visual in nature, some gurus of goal setting recommend that you keep a picture of the item or destination where you see and are reminded of it every day. If you can’t picture yourself achieving the goal, chances are you won’t.

Make a Plan for a Path to Follow to Accomplish the Goal

Create action steps to follow. Identify a critical path. The critical path defines the key accomplishments along the way, the most important steps that must happen for the goal to become a reality.

Stephen Covey said, “All things are created twice. There’s a mental or first creation and a physical or second creation of all things. You have to make sure that the blueprint, the first creation, is really what you want, that you’ve thought everything through. Then you put it into bricks and mortar. Each day you go to the construction shed and pull out the blueprint to get marching orders for the day. You begin with the end inmind.”  

Commit to the Goal by Writing It Down

Lee Iacocca said, “The discipline of writing something down is the first step toward making it happen.”  

Many professional consultants and coaches agree completely and recommend this step to accomplish your goals. Write down the plan, the action steps, and the critical path. Somehow, writing down the goal, the plan, and a timeline sets events in motion that may not have happened otherwise.

It is as if you are making a deeper commitment to goal accomplishment. You can’t fool yourself later. The written objective really was the goal. People have pulled written goals out of their desk drawers years after writing them down only to discover that they have achieved them. Written goals are powerful.

Check Your Progress Frequently

Whatever you use, a day planner, an online calendar or notetaking system, a smartphone, or a handwritten list, make sure that you check your progress frequently. People have been known to start their day by looking at their goals and then, scheduling time or action steps to move closer to the end they have in mind. If you’re not making progress or feel stymied, don’t let your optimism keep you from accomplishing your goals.

No matter how positively you are thinking, you need to assess your lack of progress. Adopt a pessimist’s viewpoint; something will and probably is, going to go wrong. Take a look at all of the factors that are keeping you from accomplishing your goal and develop a plan to overcome them. Adjust Your Plan if Progress Slows

Setting goals is a great way to keep life in focus. We set personal and professional goals to hold ourselves accountable, to help us reach our next milestone.

Sometimes we find that we aren’t motivated to reach our goals or they may seem out of reach. Taking a step back and asking ourselves a few questions can help us to refocus and get us back on the right path to reaching our goals.

Questions to ask yourself to help refocus your goals

1. Ask yourself how you want to feel.

The cycle of setting goals, if we are diligent, includes reaching them, and for many of us, what is then a short-term feeling of accomplishment. The end of the race is never as satisfying as we had hoped it would be. This leaves us with a deflated feeling of “now what?” The feeling of exuberant joy, of “I finally made it” never seems to come.

I remember when I defended my doctoral dissertation and the committee said that I passed. I was very excited as I shook everyone’s hand. As I walked out of the room and got on an elevator full of people, I wanted to tell them I had just successfully defended my dissertation.

I’m not that extroverted, so I didn’t, and I soon realized to the rest of the world, my personal accomplishment didn’t mean much. I was still happy, but it was a jolt of reality that something I had spent a big portion of my life working to achieve only mattered to a few people.

I think this is true of most things in life. The end result doesn’t always have the payout that we expect it to. I think this is why people share so much on social media. They want some type of recognition or an extension of the feeling they had hoped to feel.

When setting goals, think about how you want to feel when you reach your goal. This is one of the most important questions to ask yourself. If you are working on your finances, maybe one of the feelings you are looking for is actually security. If you start with that in mind, you are more likely to work toward your goal and be more satisfied once you accomplish it.

For my dissertation, I wasn’t looking for recognition, thankfully. I was looking for security. Passing through that hurdle meant that I had finished all the requirements for my education and could now focus on my career. Focusing on the feeling you hope to feel, helps clarify your goals.

2. What are your core values?

If you had to pick your top five values in life, what would they be? This is one of the most powerful questions to ask yourself. If you are unsure, download a list (do a search for “values list” to get some ideas) and choose five that resonate with you. Once you have your top five values, circle your top two.

These two values are your core values. My top two values are health and connection. The decisions I make in life are centered around them, as well as my goals. Make sure your goals are aligned as closely as possible with your core values.

Goals don’t have to center around your core values, but they shouldn’t contrast with them. If your goals are misaligned with your core values, you are likely to struggle. For example, I work with graduate students who put a lot of value on their families.

I know that they struggle while in school because they have a limited amount of time with their families since they are also balancing work. If you are in a time of struggle because your goals aren’t aligned with your values, consider whether it is a temporary situation for a greater good. If it is a temporary situation, recognize that your goals aren’t in alignment with your values, which is why you are struggling, but give yourself grace.

3. If you had one wish, what would it be?

What? Why are you asking me about a wish? What does this have to do with my goals? Oftentimes our thinking is very limited in scope. Our goals are based on what has happened in our lives, what others have told us about ourselves, and what our limited mind thinks we can do.

We think about what has happened and shape our goals based on this limited approach. Asking ourselves to believe in dreams, without any limitations, forces our brains to break through those barriers. It frees our mind to be creative and expand our possibilities.

Sometimes it is helpful to do this over a period of a few days. Brainstorm your wish, what would you like to have happen? Then walk away from it. Come back to it a few days later and see if you can go even bigger. You will tend to see that you were limiting yourself.

Use the information you gathered from your wish to help you formulate your goals. Have you been limiting yourself based on prior beliefs you held about yourself? Based on the work that I have done with my coaching clients, my guess would be that you have. This is actually a difficult exercise for some coaching clients.

They don’t like to do it at first. They will respond with, “Why are we doing this,” “This will never happen,” “I could never afford to do this.” These limiting thoughts keep us stuck in “what is” instead of “what could be.” Allow yourself to dream big, expand your goals to fit who you can be, instead of limiting them to who you have been. When we allow expansive thinking, we allow expansive possibilities.

When working toward goals, we can lose motivation and lose traction toward our progress. Taking time to ask ourselves some key questions about our values, what we hope to feel, and what our ultimate dreams are, helps us to reformulate our goals and set us on a road to success.

These are great questions to ask yourself. However, sometimes we may still feel stuck because of our mindset. It is okay to ask for help, whether from our friends, our colleagues, or a professional coach or counselor. Sometimes getting an outside perspective allows us to see ourselves in a new light and sheds new light on our goals.

We always start a new project with the best of intentions, but it’s easy to quickly fall off the wagon. Life gets in the way or we lose that early rush of motivation, and slowly but surely we land back at square one. Whether you want to get more done each day, work out regularly, or shed a few pounds, these small changes will help you hit those major milestones.

1. Visualize yourself achieving it.
Big goals can feel overwhelming — especially if they require real lifestyle changes. There’s a plus side, though: You can be certain you’ll feel radically different (in a good way!) when you achieve them. Whenever your motivation wanes, visualize how accomplished you’ll feel when you reach the finish line.

2. Weigh now against later.
In the moment, it can be tempting to skip an early morning workout in favor of sleeping in, or dig into the chips and dip when you ought to eat a healthy meal. When you’re relying on pure willpower to do (or not do) something, try to consider how much long-term happiness you’ll get out of it. Compare that tempting, yet fleeting satisfaction to the success you’ve visualized (see number 1!), and suddenly it’s far less enticing.

3. Create accountability.
Try talking to a friend about what you need to do to accomplish your goals, then set a deadline and report back on your progress. For many people, it’s important to feel accountable to someone other than yourself — and you can create the same motivation through groups. Want to read more? Join a book club. Need to eat better? Create a healthy eating challenge with colleagues at work.

4. Make it smaller.
No matter what you want to achieve, it can probably be broken down into smaller pieces. Rather than summoning the motivation to work out, just push yourself to get up and put on your workout clothes. Instead of “cleaning the house,” pick up just a few misplaced items. Once you’ve started moving in the right direction, it’s easier to keep up the momentum, making it more likely that you’ll finish the task.

5. Give yourself a day off.
It may be counterintuitive, but you don’t have to commit every day of the week. The dread of doing something difficult (and failing) can be enough to prevent us from even starting. If you’ve got something tough to get done, know that you can give yourself an occasional “get out of jail free” card. A cheat day or meal can be restorative and give you the R&R you need to keep going — as long as you clearly define the start and end and keep them on lock.

6. Take your brain out of it.
Make like Nike and “just do it.” OK, we know sometimes that’s easier said than done, but there are plenty of positive things you do each day without even thinking about them (whether that’s opting for whole wheat over white bread, taking the stairs, or putting on sunscreen). Rather than considering your goal something “extra” you have to add to your day, consider it an integral part of your lifestyle and completely non-optional. And consider this: If you do something daily, it’ll become habit far more quickly than if you do it just a few times a week.

7. Surround yourself with success.
The company we keep can have a huge impact on how we feel and how we spend our time. If you want to accomplish something, surround yourself with people who are working toward (or have accomplished) that same goal. Use their achievements as your motivation, and let the positive vibes sink in.

8. Look back.
It’s easy to get lost in the slog of a major project. Take some time whenever you’re feeling down to look back at how far you’ve come. Try journaling or snapping pics to document your successes. You’ll be grateful when you can look back and recall exactly how you looked or felt then versus now.

9. Prep for success.
Research suggests that the brain can essentially “run out” of patience or self-control, making it important to eliminate opportunities for slip ups. So instead of trusting future-you to do the right thing, make tough choices easier by prepping for them when you’re already feeling motivated. For example, plan your workouts or meals for the week on Sunday afternoon after a weekend of R&R instead of just hoping you’ll make healthy choices after a tough day at the office.

10. Know that you can do it.
While self-control can be depleted, researchers have also found that effect can be counteracted by simply believing that you have the self-control to accomplish your goals. So whenever you feel you “can’t say no” to those brownies, remember that if you think you can, you can!
