What happens when your career dreams are crushed by failures? We take a look at Alain de Botton’s TED Talk, which explains how changing your idea of success can help you get unstuck in your life and career.
We all face the challenges of building successful careers, because that’s what we’ve been told makes for a happy life. But is this true? In Alain de Botton’s TED Talk presentation, he sheds light on the harsh realities that come with “being successful” in today’s day and age, and offers a healthier and kinder approach to accepting your shortcomings and making “success” work for you.
Do You Know What You’re Worth?
As Botton points out in his talk, it’s easier now than ever to make a good living with a bit of know-how and persistence, but it is also increasingly more frightening to go after your dreams, because of how we, as a society, have come to view success and failure. If you think of how ruthless the media is at highlighting the failures of countless politicians and celebrities, then you get an idea of where the public’s crippling fear of failure comes from. We live in a society that has succumbed to gossip, drama, and superficiality, and this has created a false perception of what success and happiness is all about.
People are all judged (to some degree) on their ranking in the social hierarchy, as Bottom points out, and those judgments directly correlate to how much time, respect, and love others reciprocate. However, if you want to keep career anxiety at bay, then consider the following five tips:
1. Stop feeding the snobs. “We are all surrounded by snobs,” says Botton in his presentation, and “the dominant kind of snobbery that exists nowadays is job snobbery.” When you’re at a networking event or around strangers, what’s one of the first things to come out of someone’s mouth? “What do you do for a living?” Immediately, there is a sense of fear that your profession or accomplishments aren’t going to be good enough to impress this unknown person. Take ownership of your failures and successes and stop worrying about what others (“snobs”) will think of you, because then you become just like them.
2. Stop envying others. The hopes you have for your career can be absolutely destroyed by envy, because you will find yourself in a constant competition of trying to “one-up” everyone else, and you will lose sight of what matters to you, and you alone. The root of envy stems from the act of comparing yourself to others, causing you to equate your aspirations to the accomplishments of others. Take a word from the wise Theordore Roosevelt and remember that “comparison is the thief of joy,” so don’t waste your time robbing yourself of what you truly deserve.
3. Don’t take things too personally. Why is it that out of a million successes, one failure can discount them all? When you take things personally, you lose sight of the lesson to be learned amidst the loss. So, what may feel like the end of your career, could simply be a blessing in disguise that is meant to make you stronger, wiser, and more prepared for greater opportunities.
4. Don’t judge others. You know how the Golden Rule goes: “Treat others as you wish to be treated.” Hold your tongue when it comes to passing judgment on others, because you’re only projecting your idea of right and wrong onto them, and that is completely subjective. When you pass judgment on others, you’re really only acting out of insecurities and/or envy, and that’s why we leave pettiness back in high school.
5. Sympathize, don’t criticize. Instead of criticizing others and yourself for failing, try to sympathize instead. Take a lesson from the ancient Greece art form of “tragic art,” where artists told stories of how people who failed in their lives were awarded sympathy in return. Adopt a gentler, more forgiving response to failure in yourself and others.

Getting Your Business Unstuck with Barry Moltz
Barry Moltz gets businesses growing again by unlocking their long forgotten potential. 1. Cash Flow
Having a cash flow positive company is critical for success. This means the business has more cash at the end of the month than the beginning.
2. Quick Ratio
This simple balance sheet formula divides current assets minus current liabilities. Ratios greater than one mean the company has enough current assets to pay its current bills.
3. Customer Annuities
This means repeat customers pay the company automatically every month. This ensures that there are sales at the beginning of the month even without marketing.
4. Fixed Overhead Expenses
High fixed overhead expenses do not give companies flexibility as sales and profit changes. Keep as many expenses as possible variable with sales.
5. Management Team
Strong companies are not about their owners, but their team leaders. Build a culture that can make a profit while the owner is on vacation.
Solution: Copywriting, demographic targeting, and choosing the right keywords can trip up the novice. Get help from a search engine marketing professional like Hubspot and Dex One before launching a campaign.
2. Travel expenses
Small-business owners shop hard for the best airline, hotel and car deal before they leave for any trip. Unfortunately, once they get on the road, they waste a great deal of money. This includes $5 coffees, $12 alcoholic beverages, $5 sodas from the mini bar, city parking and taxi rides—not to mention that client dinner that went way over budget.
Solution: Look at public transportation from the airport. Many times, this can cost 10 percent of a taxi or rental car. Ensure that the hotel is near planned appointments so there’s less costly commuting to and from those locations. Book hotels that have kitchens in the room or pack food for the trip.
3. Wrong Smartphone Data Plan
Due to the fear of overages, most small businesses use the unlimited plan. According to Consumer Reports, 48 percent of consumers use less than 300 MB a month.
Solution: Check your company’s plan and negotiate with the provider to get one that matches usage. Telephone bills are also ripe for renegotiation, or you can move to using a voice over IP solution (VoIP) from companies like Nextiva that offer a flat rate per phone per month.
4. No Follow-up Procedures in Place
Small businesses spend tons of marketing money generating leads for their company that they never follow up on to get the sale.
Solution: Have a process in place that tracks every lead, not just for the initial contact, but on a monthly basis. Having a customer relationship management system (CRM) like Salesforce or Infusionsoft is critical for success.
5. Non-retail Office Space
This fixed expense is too big or extravagant for what the company needs. Small-business owners overpay and overbuild because they miscalculate how fast their companies will grow. Large or fancy office spaces also can feed their egos.
Solution: Can the company be virtual? What is lost if everyone works form home? Determine what investments need to be made for a virtual office to work and compare those figures to the current cost of office space.
6. Website Design
Most small-business owners focus on a unique website design and pay handsomely for it. They also invest too much in branding and logos when their company launches.
Solution: Pick a template for an open sourced Web tool like WordPress. Focus investments in keeping content updated, reviewing website analytics, using CRM and e-commerce.
7. Bad Hires
Hiring the wrong employee typically costs 20 percent of his or her annual salary. This doesn’t even include the lost productivity that a successful person would contribute to the company.
Solution: Be slow to hire and quick to fire. Make sure prospective employees match the company culture before testing their skills.
8. Large Investments in Technology
Too many small-business owners invest in large hardware and software solutions that need to be customized. Their business changes, and then they need to migrate to a different system.
Solution: Use applications in the cloud that charge a monthly fee. This technique matches a variable cost model more closely. Reputable vendors will constantly innovate their technology, and their small-business customers will benefit with little cost.

SALT LAKE CITY — When you desire change but seem to be stuck in 6 feet of emotional mud, try this three-step check. It’s simple, doable and creates a jump-start to change.
Be still. To know what we need or want to change, we need to get comfy in a quiet place, even for 15 minutes. Hire a sitter, ask your spouse, trade with a friend. Take time to ponder and settle your heart about your life.
Lao Tse Tung shares, “Be still like a great mountain, but flow like a great river.” As you give yourself permission to listen to inner feelings and inner thoughts, your mind and soul will share.
Too often we want to change, and then focus on all the things wrong with ourselves and our lives. Start with the good. Begin with where you’re having success. List at least three to five things you are doing or have done well. Ask yourself: What challenges have I overcome in the past year, in my life? What habits have I let go? What new habits have I kept? What good traits do I have? You will draw on these positives as you begin to make changes.
Consider the top stressors that make it difficult for you to function or feel joy. Is it finances? A relationship? A personal trait, like being disorganized or emotional shopping? Again, write them down, as if observing yourself on a chair. Be honest, gentle and candid with yourself. No bad grade will be assessed; allow yourself to be and feel what isn’t working and see it objectively without passing judgment.
Years ago I created a change formula: internal + external = eternal. In making a change, start with either internal or external but to make it lasting you need both.
5 tips to make your New Year’s goals a success
For an internal change, consider “What is the why?” Determine the root of the desire or stressor; from where does it really stem? Then find the place where you can begin. Work backward. For example, if you say “I’m 20 pounds overweight,” why is that? “It’s because I eat things that aren’t helpful.” Why is that? “Because I get stressed and bored and angry and that’s my go-to to feel good.” Then you can say, “Oh, emotional triggers. OK, I can deal with that.”
For an external change focus on a new habit. In that same scenario, maybe the person starts with a new eating plan that’s doable and practices until the internal mojo kicks in.
One note about a new habit: Remember, choose one habit to focus on like a laser beam until you feel a shift. Each time you practice the habit, you’re moving that life-change flywheel.
In his book “Good to Great,” author Jim Collins says what took companies from good to great was starting and consistently moving that flywheel to success. “Was it the first push, the second? The fifth? No! It was all of them added together in an overall accumulation of effort applied in a consistent direction.” Each choice matters.
This brief back-to-basics evaluation is magic. Choose a goal, achieve it for a week, then evaluate it at the end with these three questions. You’ll get unstuck and more focused to find your feel-good place.

One of the most important key steps to achieving success in life is to know the meaning of success for your personal life. The true meaning of success goes far beyond the common definitions of success, such as having a lot of money, being wealthy, having a lot of tangibles and earned degrees. Quite the opposite: true success in life cannot be measured with the above-named factors, but instead with the amount of people that are able to live a better and more advanced life because of what you created. This is the meaning of success. Not the trophies people are collecting in their lives. Media and society let us often conclude that living a successful life means to be extraordinarily wealthy and have a lot of tangibles. But the meaning of success is to live a happy life and to make this world a better place for everyone.
Is a fancy sports car really the definition of success?
Definition of failure
The opposite of success is failure as it means to fail while trying to achieve aims or objectives. Besides this regular definition of failure, it also can be said that even wealthy and successful persons fail in their lives. Just think about the rich and famous and all their scandals, addictions and suicides. All of them were extraordinary persons but a lot of them were also extremely unhappy with their lives and were not able to see the meaning of success. Wealth cannot be defined with money, but instead with values in your life that make you a happy person, such as friendship, relationships, and your family.
The difference between accomplishment and success:
Accomplishment is often associated with success, but it is not the same. Accomplishment refers to the results we desire when we attempt to reach specific goals. Basically it is the results that we plan or expect to occur. Success is the positive consequence or outcome of an achieved accomplishment.
Accomplishment can be seen as the process to become successful and with every accomplished goal you take a step towards prosperity and a life full of success.
How to achieve success in life?

If you or someone you love has struggled with addiction, you know how difficult it is to get and stay clean. The road to recovery doesn’t go in only one direction, and as hard as it may be to accept, setbacks and relapses are part of the process. Although we all wish it were different, professionals in the field of addiction treatment don’t have a cure to offer. We do, however, have important information about the factors that improve the likelihood of long-term recovery. There’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all recovery model, but the available research suggests that some factors are essential. Regardless of what form of treatment you receive or what kind of program you work, here are the fundamentals:
Readiness to Change. If you know anything about recovery, you know this one’s a no-brainer. No matter how bad things have gotten, no matter how much other people want you to change, if you’re not ready, it’s not happening. The truth is, it’s hard to take the first step. Sometimes even misery can seem safer than change, so taking action to do things differently is a courageous and commendable act.
Belief in the Ability to Overcome Challenges. In psychology, we call this self-efficacy. It’s basically a fancy term that refers to a person’s belief that he or she can make things happen. When it comes to recovery, this is crucial. Once you’ve decided to get clean, you have to have a conviction that you can actually do it. This, of course, can be challenging, as past experiences may make it hard to see that change is possible. But every day clean and sober is an occasion to feel a little stronger, a little more capable. The beautiful thing about self-efficacy is that it builds on itself; the more positive changes you create, the more capable you feel, and the more capable you feel, the more energy you have to keep the positive changes going.
Maintenance of Psychological and Emotional Wellness. There’s a strong link that binds addiction, anxiety, and depression. Research shows that mental and emotional wellness are essential to a solid recovery program. Addressing the addiction without attending to any other dimensions of mental health is ineffective. People in recovery who suffer from untreated anxiety or depression tend not to stay clean for very long. When their symptoms become overwhelming, they seek relief; and since their brains are primed to seek a particular type of relief—in the form of their drug(s) of choice—it’s often only a matter of time before the untreated mental health issues result in relapse.
Support. This one cannot be understated. Study after study has shown that interpersonal support is essential to recovery. It isn’t easy to get and stay sober. Being in recovery, especially at first, can be terrifying and isolating. That’s why it’s so important to be surrounded by people who understand you; know what you’re going through; and are willing to stay by your side, cheering you on and keeping you focused when the going gets tough. Check out this TED talk from Johann Hari, which offers a thought-provoking perspective on why support and connection are so vital to recovery.
Structure. Life in active addiction is often uncertain, unbalanced, unstructured, and unpredictable. That’s why a structured environment and routine are cornerstones of a successful recovery program. The research evidence and my experiences with clients make a strong case for the importance of setting up a clear structure and sticking to it. This means having a consistent routine and adhering to it every day. It means establishing a sense of organization and order with regard to daily tasks and responsibilities. It means attending to the basic activities of daily life, keeping a simple daily schedule that you can stick to, maintaining a balanced lifestyle, and making sure sobriety remains a priority. It might sound like a lot, but with a little help from the right supports, it’s completely possible, and it makes all the difference in the world.
Productivity. The last, but certainly not least, quality of a successful recovery program is productivity. Everyone who’s ever attempted sobriety can attest to the fact that boredom is a major trigger with enormous relapse potential. That’s why it’s so important to stay busy. The research suggests that people who engage in productive and meaningful activities tend to stay sober for longer. Whether it’s working at a job, engaging in a hobby, doing physical exercise, playing in an intramural sports league, fellowshipping at meetings, or volunteering in the community, staying productive is key to staying sober.
While this list contains proven factors that contribute to a solid recovery program, it’s by no means exhaustive. If you’re new to recovery, it’s important to engage the support of a sponsor or mental health professional with experience in addiction. You are not alone, and yes, you can do this!

Chris grew up in New York. He moved to Florida, looking for the freedom to express his ideas. He had always wanted to create a television show, and soon after he finally got the chance to do that, a physical fight broke out between two guests on his live television talk show. The footage got leaked to the press, and Chris landed up in trouble with the management of the TV station.
Although nothing like that ever happened again, that incident set Chris on a course where he eventually got thrown off the TV station.
Chris then created a business group. And in the early days, while trying to find speakers for his business group, Chris invested whatever money he had in paying speakers to come and speak. One of those speakers was Jay Conrad Levinson, the author of the book, Guerrilla Marketing.
No money for marketing
Chris loves marketing, so he assumed that everyone would know Jay Conrad Levinson, and at least 500 people would come and hear him speak. After paying him, however, Chris was left with no money for marketing, and very few people turned up to hear Jay Conrad Levinson speak.
Filming a promo
So Chris decided to film a promo for the book, Guerilla Marketing. And ironically, he ended up using the Guerilla Marketing technique to sell Jay Conrad Levinson’s books!
A life full of experiences and colorful characters
A long time ago, Chris decided to fill his life with experiences and colorful characters. So he has lots of stories and colorful tales to share.
Although he loves business, he’s good at it, and he’s interviewed many big Titans of business over the years, he has seen many of them doing the same thing over and over, for the last forty years or so, and that does not hold much interest to him.
Chris is intrigued by unique people. And he loves events.
Through his events, he has had the opportunity to create a lot of different experiences for himself and others, and he has also been able to meet lots of people and create lots of colorful stories.
Chris has learned from all his experiences.
From his experience with Guerilla Marketing, he learned that although he was paying far too much for speakers, he had still created a lot of value. And that experience also changed his philosophy on big-name speakers.
Getting Gary Vee to Speak
Chris was able to get Gary Vee to speak at his local event before Gary was a big deal, and he did it through a self-liquidating offer. Hear how he made it big even before he knew what the next big thing was.
Functionalizing your art form
Chris has also learned to functionalize his art form.
He explains that functionalizing your art means getting to know how you work and then functionalizing it in a way that people can see it for your specific DNA, or blueprint. In that way, you can find the people who are the right fit for what you do, and you can grow from there.
Community is Chris’s specialty
Chris has created his community and tribe over the years. And through that, he has seen that community is his specialty.

To truly know yourself is the most important skill you can ever possess. When you know who you are, you know what you need to do, instead of looking for permission from others to do what you already know you ought to do. It allows you to bypass tons of frustration caused by putting time into the wrong things. Yes, life is supposed to be full of trial and error, but this lets you find the best areas for you to experiment with in the first place. Once you know yourself, you will become more confident, you will understand your purpose, and you will begin making a bigger impact on the world.
So how can you know who you are and what you ought to do in life? Here are the six steps you need to take in order to know your true self:
1. Be quiet.
You cannot and will not be able to know yourself until you take the time to be still. Many people don’t know themselves because any sort of silence scares them; it’s too uncomfortable to be alone with every flaw staring back at them. But it isn’t until you get alone, evaluate yourself and are completely truthful with yourself that you will actually be able to see every facet of your life—the good and the bad. Be quiet and discover your true self.

2. Realize who you truly are, not who you want to be.
I know you already have a set idea of who you desperately want to be, but it might not be who you were designed to be; this is why knowing who you really are is so important. When you know who you are, you will finally see where you and your specific gifts fit into the bigger picture.
And although there are many points along your journey to help you discover yourself, the best way to begin is to take a personality test and the StrengthsFinder test. No, these self-evaluations aren’t perfect, but they do pinpoint your top areas of strengths, so you can focus on the change you were meant to bring into the world.
3. Find what you are good at (and not good at).
This might be the most difficult step in the process of finding who you are, but it’s a necessary one. Sure, it takes trial and error to find what you’re good at, and no, I don’t want you to give up before you’ve had more than enough attempts, but knowing when to quit is a gift that everyone needs to learn.
Quit when you’ve put in ample time and your efforts aren’t giving back in return. What is ample time? Only you can decide that. But when you quit correctly, it isn’t giving up, it’s making room for something better. When your actions do nothing but drain you—rather than produce more passion and increase your drive to do more—that’s a good sign it is time to focus elsewhere. Your strengths will show you who you are.
4. Find what you are passionate about.
Following passion of any kind is a good thing, and you need to pay attention when it comes because it indicates an area of life that you need to pay more attention to. If we’re talking about following your passion in work, it’s a good thing. And if we’re talking about having more passion for life, it’s a good thing. Focus more on passion; understand yourself in better ways, and you’ll make a bigger impact. Passion produces effort and continuous effort produces results.
5. Ask for feedback.
If you don’t know yourself, hearing what others have to say about you is a helpful practice. Ask them two simple questions: “What strengths do you think I need to develop further?” and “What weaknesses do you think I need to work on?” Of course, their opinion isn’t going to be perfect, but their feedback will probably indicate a few areas you should at least take a second look at. This step is especially important for those who are stuck in finding themselves. Sometimes those closest to us can see something we might not be able to see in ourselves.
6. Assess your relationships.
A large aspect of knowing yourself can be found in your relationships. When you realize you’ll never truly know anyone else until you discover yourself, the importance of knowing yourself becomes even more apparent. This truth especially rings true for business leaders, because if you don’t know the people on your team, then you will be lost as a leader. But this rule also applies to any relationship in your life. Almost as much as you need to know yourself, other people also need to know who you are. People need you—the real you.
Use your reflections to fight your biggest fears, because when you understand who you are meant to be, your purpose will finally become bigger than your fears. When you realize who you are, you will spend less time spinning your wheels. Focusing on your strengths gives you the needed traction to begin making a bigger and better difference in the world. When you know yourself, you will find more peace, and you will find success quicker than ever before.
