Identify a Goal

The first step in goal setting is identifying a goal. Help students select a goal that is challenging yet attainable. Feeling a sense of accomplishment and success with the first few goals they set is important to help students feel ready to set bigger goals in the future. Start by discussing different areas in which they can set goals (academic, behavior, social, etc.) You can also discuss the difference in short and long-term goals. Making a foldable or fortune teller is a fun way for students to share and discuss their goals.

1. Make constant efforts to improve self-discipline

One of the most important principles for practicing self-discipline is to stop pleasurable but less effective pursuits and resume effective pursuits for you.

You must make constant efforts to improve self-discipline. The above principle works in various areas of life.

2. Do not postpone things you can do today

One of the most misconceptions is that we have a lot of time ahead of us.

We think: “The whole life before me” or “I am still young” or “I will make the money right now I want to enjoy.” Time passes and suddenly people realize that in fact there is no time but it is late to do some of the things.

Do not postpone things you can do today. Do it immediately.

3. Start thinking positively, and with time the habit of thinking positively will eliminate the habit of thinking negatively

Just imagine when you get up in the morning and think, “Oh, How do I want to go on sleeping?”

Another example: When your manager makes you constructive criticism and you think “Do not appreciate me here and all the time only criticism, long time I have to look elsewhere”.

In these cases, our subconscious goes with our negative thoughts and we program ourselves not to succeed and think positive.

Try to change the attitude, tell yourself in the morning, “Excellent morning, I feel wonderful, a new day and a job I love waiting for me”

Even though you do not agree with that, but when you say things by heart, a lot of things change.

4. Personal Development and Vision

Personal development involves a vision of where to move, and who you want to be.

Only you, create and connect the picture of the world you want to be in, work on this picture, and improve it every day.

5. Continuous work on yourself

All that gives a person a serious and lasting positive result is the result of his systematic and continuous work on himself.

Do not break up with a few things you want to improve but make a list of “Self-Improvement Program” for the coming year and start one by one.

Choose what is most important to you right now.

For instance: Active physical activity or lose weight and try to persevere.

7. Compare yourself to yourself

I have always compared myself throughout life with others.

Recently after an internal job on myself, I realized that it was not contributing to me, but the result is the opposite that more destroys me. It makes me constantly just look at others and try to constantly compete with them.

True, the competition between people brings to progress but with it creates feelings in you “I feel less equal” so you better look at it differently. Then I changed my attitude, stopped comparing myself with others, began to examine only my own results against myself.

What does it do?

It is equally challenging but at the same time makes you more motivated.

Concentrate on your results and not on others. When you look in the mirror, you see yourself and not others in it.

Achieving our goals is seldom easy. It’s why knowing how to stay motivated is so incredibly important when it comes to getting what we want in the long term. And in a world with more distractions than ever before — from non-stop web access to constant texting — it can be all the harder to stay focused and productive and not just give in to what’s easier in the moment.

I’ve often struggled with motivation, whether it’s been related to my career, my health, or just getting better at a hobby I enjoy. And while it’s not always the biggest deal (it’s not really all that vital that I learn to play my favorite song on the ukulele by my birthday), sometimes it really worries me. I don’t want to be filled with regret at some point down the line because I didn’t follow through on something I really wanted, and I also don’t want to feel like I failed at achieving the things that are important to me, all because I couldn’t figure out how to stay motivated.

Because this is a topic that matters to me, I delved into some pretty serious online research, as well as checked in with an expert, to find the absolute best ways to stay motivated in life. If you’re looking for ways to help yourself achieve your goals, here are 11 tips that should help.

1. Don’t Assume Money Will Motivate You

In an interview with Bustle over email, motivational trainer (plus business and life coach) Karen Strunks says, “Many people think money alone will be enough to motivate them, and whilst that may do so initially, it’s very hard to sustain financial motivation if the work you are doing actually drags. If you do that type of work for long enough you will find that no amount of money is worth swapping parts of your life in activities that aren’t aligned with who you are and what truly is your passion and mission in life.” So first things first, be true to yourself when it comes to setting goals!

2. Make Sure They’re Your Goals

And on that note, Strunks also says that, “One of the biggest challenges in staying motivated and sticking to our goals is in making sure that the goals we have set our ones we really want to attain.” She went on to note, “Sometimes we set goals based on what we think we ‘should’ do. Or we base them on what other people say.” Make sure you’re going after something that you want and that makes you happy — it can make all the difference.

3. Visualize The Results

According to a piece featured on Forbes about staying motivated, it’s important to visualize the end result and what it will feel like when you’ve achieved your end goal. This means visualizing the sweat on your back, the feeling of relief, the utter excitement — this is what will fuel you on days when you don’t feel like working.

4. Break The Goal Down Into Smaller Pieces

The same Forbes compilation piece recommended breaking your goals down into smaller, more task-oriented goals — and set target deadline for those tasks. For example. if your goal is “re-organize my entire closet,” start by saying, “First I’m going to tackle the shoes, then the belts, then the winter coats in the back,” etc. This method can make even the biggest task feel more manageable.

5. Tap Into Other People’s Energy

In a piece for Inc, small business advisor Marla Tabaka stressed the importance of surrounding yourself with positive thinkers who emanate positive energy. “Do you have people in your life who can engage in stimulating conversation about business or the other things that you’re passionate about? As human beings we give and receive energy and inspiration. Make sure you are receiving as much, or more, than you are handing out,” Tabaka wrote.

6. Get Organized

Tabaka also recommended taking time to sit down and organize your thoughts. “When I’m working on a big project, nothing zaps my energy more than an over-stimulated, cluttered mind,” she wrote. So instead, sit down and move the process from your head to an actual organized list, or talk out what you’re thinking with a trusted friend (or both). Then schedule specific times to complete each task. This is key to getting what you want.

7. Keep The Big Picture In Mind

One of my favorite YouTube personalities, Tessa Violet, stressed the importance of keeping your “top tier” goal in mind at all times, even when doing the less pleasant, more menial tasks related to it. That way, she said, “If you’re having a week where you feel like [you’re’] not motivated to do the work, you remember, ‘My goal isn’t about finishing the work. My goal is about something bigger.'”

8. Don’t Worry About What You Can’t Control

In a piece for The Huffington Post, life coach Stacia Pierce said to “take control of what you can, and don’t worry about what you can’t.” So if you often find yourself paralyzed with the “what ifs” (as in, “What if I write this and no one reads it,” “What if I don’t get accepted into the program,” etc, etc) let it go and just focus on turning out quality work.

9. Seek Out Positive Information

Pierce also recommended reading or listening to positive information every single day. “If you fill your mind with uplifting and inspiring information, it will keep you motivated. Go to the bookstore or library today and find at least one book on a positive topic that will give you a boost. You need constant reminders telling you that you are capable of achievement,” she wrote.

10. Remind Yourself Why You Set The Goal

In a piece for Tiny Buddha, integrated channeler Maria Moraca said that when things feel overwhelming, just take a few moments to sit back and remind yourself why you chose your path in the first place. Was it to help people? Was it because you knew your end goal would lead to long term happiness, even if it was short term work? This can always help you find clarity in the worst moments.

11. Be Consistent

And finally, Strunks also stressed the importance of being consistent with your work, writing, “take consistent action every single day.” This means that even if you’re totally not in the mood, do one small proactive thing that will move you towards your ultimate goal — even if it’s just a tweet.

Let’s face the facts — getting out of bed is hard. When you’re all wrapped up in your comfy blankets, it can feel almost impossible to motivate yourself in the morning. That is, unless you’re one of those lucky people who pops awake at 6 a.m. But if not, then I’m sure you’re right there grumbling, whining, and hitting snooze with the rest of us.

Starting your day like this may not feel like the biggest deal in the world. I mean, you do get up, you do make it to work (albeit, occasionally late), and you do somehow manage to survive the day. But that’s the thing, right there — you shouldn’t feel like you have to survive anything.

That’s what morning people understand that the rest of us have yet to realize. The early morning hours of the day are a really great time to be alive. When you wake up before everyone else, you have time to prepare for the day, to think about your goals, and to soak in a few moments of peace. It’s all kinds of awesome, and it really sets the tone for a good day.

And that’s where motivation comes in. Motivation is what will get you out of bed early so you can enjoy such things. And it will have you heading off to work on time, with an almost-annoying pep in your step.

Sound good? Then here are some ways to get yourself a bit more motivated in the morning.

1. Make Sure You Get A Good Night’s Sleep

First things first, you can’t feel motivated for anything if you are too tired to move. So start off by getting a good night’s rest. To do this, the general rule of thumb, according to Dr. Michael J. Breus for the Huffington Post, is to go to bed seven and a half hours before you need to wake up. “Count back five 90-minute cycles or 7.5 hours. Each sleep cycle on average is 90 minutes long and the average person has five of them per night,” Breus said. That should be just the amount of sleep you need to be ready to start the day.

2. Set Your Alarm To Something Not-So-Annoying

Don’t start your day with the sound of a blaring alarm, radio static, or annoying talk news. Instead, set your alarm to something soothing and upbeat. Think your favorite song, or a funny podcast, to make getting up way easier.

3. Whatever You Do, Don’t Snooze

Don’t start the day by hitting snooze. It’s bad for the psyche, bad for your motivation, and only makes waking up that much harder. As Alan Henry said on Lifehacker.com, “After you hit snooze and drift off, your brain starts its sleep cycle all over again. When the alarm goes off a second time, you’re likely at an even deeper, earlier part of your sleep cycle, which results in you feeling even worse than you did the first time.”

4. Ask Yourself Some Positive Questions

Before you even get out of bed, ask yourself some questions, such as “What am I happy about in life right now?” or “What am I excited about today?” It may sound cheesy, but taking a second to be grateful can help lift the veil of sluggishness. And as Henrik Edberg noted on PositivityBlog.com, the questions also make you recognize things you take for granted, which can fill you with a sense of appreciation.

5. Do Something Small To Get Yourself Rolling

If you’re really feeling the pull of your bed, try doing something small to get yourself motivated to do more. “Just clean your desk. Or pay your bills. Or wash the dishes. You just need to get started. When you have finished that small task you’ll feel more alert and ready to go do the next thing,” Edberg suggested.

6. Treat Yourself To Sweet, Sweet Rewards

Tell yourself that only once you get up, pick out your clothes, and take a shower can you sit down to breakfast, or coffee, or a few minutes of scrolling Facebook. According to Eric Barker on Time.com, “Research shows that rewards are responsible for three-quarters of why you do things.” So choose something you consider a reward, and use it as motivation to pull yourself through the arduousness that is morning.

7. Use Some Good Ol’ Fashioned Peer Pressure

If you are not a morning person, starching leeching off someone else’s amazing ability to pop out of bed. Think about setting up a gym date with a friend (who you definitely don’t want to let down, right?). Or get your SO to rustle you up from underneath the comfy covers, and then make breakfast together. Basically, if you have people waiting around with expectations, it’ll be much easier to get yourself moving.

8. Actually Have Something Good For Breakfast

When I say something good, I don’t mean a half rotten banana, or a quick bowl of stale cereal. I’m talking about smoothies, pancakes, omelettes — the things that make mornings so great. Not only will a healthy breakfast wake you up and supply tons of energy, but it can be quite the reason to start the day.

9. Take A Gander At Your Vision Board

Write down a list of things you want in life, or go full out and make a vision board complete with photos and inspirational quotes. Then, hang it where you’ll see it first thing in the morning. As Onder Hassan noted on Lifehack.org, “Our brains constantly need reminding of what we want from our lives. Having it written down creates a massive shift in our psyches and belief systems because what is simply a thought and a dream suddenly becomes tangible and clearly visible for everyone to see.” Look at it every morning, and soak up the good vibes.

10. Set Some Attainable Goals For The Day

It can be easy to get overwhelmed when your goals are things like “get a new job” or ” backpack around Europe.” That’s because these major things take a lot of planning and forethought, and can’t happen in a day. My point is, don’t let overwhelm ruin your motivation. Instead, set some small, attainable goals for the day that will move you in the right direction. As Jeff Olson said on Greatist.com, “Your little choices add up to big results.”

11. Get Dressed in Something That Makes You Feel Good

There’s something about the perfect outfit that can kind of make or break your day. That’s because when you’re feeling comfy and lookin’ good, you project confidence, and that’s a major motivator. Build a wardrobe that expresses your style — one that feels right — and you’ll actually look forward to getting dressed in the morning.

And yes, it really can be that simple to become a motivated morning person. Sometimes all it takes are a few tweaks to your morning routine, and soon you’ll actually want to get up and start the day.

Grow Your Business, Not Your Inbox

Even the most passionate and motivated among us have off days. We wake up feeling detached from work, or groggy, frustrated or depressed, and we can’t get into the right mindset to be productive. We might be able to go through the motions of work, but we aren’t operating at peak efficiency, nor are we enjoying what we’re doing.

Is this you? Thankfully, even on your worst days, there are some psychological tricks you can use to hack your mind to become more motivated:

1. Visualize your long-term goals.

Research from the University of Virginia suggests that visualizing your potential future is highly motivating, even if that future is distant. Though we tend to perform our best and achieve the best outcomes when we optimize our work and focus for long-term performance, our minds are wired for short-term focus and goals. So, instead of zooming in on one task or project, think about your long-term goals, and work backward to visualize how these small steps will lead to that eventuality. Visualizing should super-charge your focus.

Long-term thinking is what Jeff Bezos used to make Amazon the tech powerhouse it is today. Since 1997, his manifesto has been “It’s all about the long term,” a kind of proactive warning to shareholders that the company is willing to sacrifice short-term revenue if that means higher long-term gains.

2. At least start your task.

One of the hardest parts of any task, especially a challenging one, is actually getting started. Once you’re in the middle of something, it’s much easier to keep that momentum going. To overcome this initial hurdle, commit yourself to at least starting your task;you can always tell yourself that you can abandon it after five good minutes of actual work.

By the time those five minutes are up, you might already be so into the project that you’ll naturally want to carry that momentum forward. So, start! The sooner you do, the sooner you’ll achieve that flow. This charge may seem intimidating or difficult if the task is beyond your usual scope, but in the words of former Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer, “I always did something I was a little not ready to do. I think that’s how you grow. When there’s that moment of ‘Wow, I’m not really sure I can do this,’ and you push through those moments, that’s when you have a breakthrough.”

3. Set a timer.

You can also motivate yourself by setting a timer,forcing yourself to work for a fixed amount of time and putting a break on the schedule for the near future. This simultaneously puts a limit on how much effort you’ll need to expend and gives you something to look forward to — a break.

Studies show that the “average” optimal time for this work-break split entails working for 52 minutes and breaking for 17, but you’ll likely need some adjustments to make the pattern work for you. For example, Tony Schwartz (president of the Energy Project) takes a break every 90 minutes, since he says his alertness tends to drop off after those 90 minutes are up.

4. Tell someone what you plan to do.

Social pressure can influence your personal motivation fairly strongly. If you have a big project to do, or a major goal for the day, tell someone close to you (such as a friend, family member or even a colleague) what you intend to accomplish. Knowing you’ll need to eventually report back to that person, you’ll feel extra pressure to do what you said you were going to.

If you want even more pressure, consider broadcasting your goal to a whole group of people, such as the entire office. Ray Wu, cofounder of Weilos, used that online weight-loss community’s platform to measure this effect. The result: Participants who actively shared their goals and progress ended up losing 1.2 pounds per week, compared to just 0.27 pounds per week among dieters not using the platform.

5. Change your “self-talk.”

A comprehensive review of 47 different studies reported in the Journal of Sports Exercise Psychology confirmed the effects of positive and negative “self-talk” — that running internal dialogue most of us experience throughout the day. Essentially, positive self-talk leads to higher motivation, better self-esteem and an elevated mood, while negative self-talk leads to the opposite.

If you find yourself saying or thinking things like “This is too much,” or “I’m stressed out of my mind,” try rephrasing those comments to things like, “This is an exciting challenge,” or “I’m going to feel great when I’m done with this.” Sometimes, a simple mental change is all it takes to radically transform your perspective.

6. Keep a task list.

Start keeping a list of tasks to do, and write down everything — even small, minutes-long tasks throughout your day. Whenever you get something done, cross it off the list or put a check mark next to it. This will help you stay organized but, more importantly, will give you a boost of motivation every time you cross something off.

In the words of April Underwood, vice president of product at Slack, “Have a clear system for to-dos: whether it’s ‘Getting Things Done’ or the ‘Checklist Manifesto,’ just have a system and stick to it.” Continued Underwood: “I have a very specific method I use in Slack and in email that works for me, and knowing I have that system keeps me from feeling overwhelmed even when I’m behind or the to-dos pile up.”

By keeping a task list, you too will be able to tangibly mark your progress, and you’ll feel better about what you’ve already achieved. You’ll also get to visualize your progress over time, which can help you keep going when you hit a wall.

7. Establish consequences.

Though reward-based systems often work better for teaching people new things, our instinct to avert loss motivates us to accomplish a goal when there are consequences for not accomplishing it. For example, in one experiment, teachers were split into two groups: one group was offered a $4,000 bonus if their students’ grades improved, and another group was actually given the $4,000, along with the threat that they would have to return the money if grades didn’t improve. Those consequences led the latter group to perform better over the semester.

So, if you want to get more things done, establish your own consequences for not getting them done.

If you find yourself chronically low on motivation and this happens relatively frequently — say, more than once or twice a week — consider this a sign of a bigger problem in your daily work life. You might be dealing with too much stress (without an outlet to relieve it), or you might be heading toward burnout.

If that’s the case, these suggested short-term hacks won’t be enough to help you recover. You’ll need to invest significant resources into changing your environment and your lifestyle to something more manageable, longer-term.

Today is the day. It’s time to make the most out of your life: and that means, it’s time to learn how to get motivated.

#6 – Remember Your Peak Moments

I used to call this being in the zone, but I much prefer the terminology from Find Your Great Work: peak moments.

These are moments of triumph and they remind me who I am, what I am about – and why I am chasing my unique goals.

“A peak moment is a time when you felt you were at the top of your game […]

Your Peak Moment connects you with that time when you felt most fulfilled, most stretched, most present[…] a moment of insight where you say: yes this is something to remember, this is a moment of me at my most essential, me at my most authentic and best.”

If you’re not at your best right now – try to remind yourself of the times you were, and use that to fuel you.

#5 Get Active.

There is SO MUCH research out there about the benefits of exercise – including boosting your mood.

When you don’t exercise, not only will your fitness suffer: but your other goals suffer as well.

For me personally, my work sessions after running, high-energy workout music and a refreshing shower are some of the best work I’ll do all day.

You don’t need to understand all the science: what you need to know is if you’re in a funk, and really hitting a wall with your work – you may be better off stepping away for a moment.

Take a break and running, walk or stretch for half an hour – you’ll come back refreshed and ready to work. It’s one of the easiest ways I’ve learned for how to get motivated – and help my health at the same time.

#4 – Motivate Yourself Daily.

Motivation builds upon itself.

#7 Find Your Mantra

A mantra doesn’t have to be long – it just needs to get you excited.

When you’re tired, lazy, slacking – it’s those few words that remind you what matters to you and get you to take action.

  • I am the master of my own destiny
  • “I can accept failure but I can’t accept not trying.” – Michael Jordan

My mantra when I find myself spinning my wheels? Value your time.

Everyone has their own life to live, and I can’t tell your what your mantra is – but I bet you probably already have something in mind.

#6 – Remember Your Peak Moments

I used to call this being in the zone, but I much prefer the terminology from Find Your Great Work: peak moments.

These are moments of triumph and they remind me who I am, what I am about – and why I am chasing my unique goals.

#5 Get Active.

There is SO MUCH research out there about the benefits of exercise – including boosting your mood.

When you don’t exercise, not only will your fitness suffer: but your other goals suffer as well.

For me personally, my work sessions after running, high-energy workout music and a refreshing shower are some of the best work I’ll do all day.

You don’t need to understand all the science: what you need to know is if you’re in a funk, and really hitting a wall with your work – you may be better off stepping away for a moment.

Take a break and running, walk or stretch for half an hour – you’ll come back refreshed and ready to work. It’s one of the easiest ways I’ve learned for how to get motivated – and help my health at the same time.

#4 – Motivate Yourself Daily.

Motivation builds upon itself.

What do you think is easier:

  1. Motivating yourself after an unproductive day, week or month

Of course it’s easier to be motivated when things are already going your way.
