Routines and habits and, yes, discipline , can form the spine of achievement. But at a certain point our routines can stop helping us achieve what we want and instead become ruts, keeping us stuck in our day-to-day, stifling our personal development and hampering growth.

Of course getting out of a rut isn’t always easy. It’s like a sweater you’ve been wearing for years — super comfortable and difficult to let go of. But just as that sweater needs to get the boot when it’s no longer in style (or presentable!), there comes a time when your routine needs a change. Here are five simple ideas for shaking things up.

Mix up your morning routine : Mornings set the tone for the day . Making a change at the very beginning of the day can open up wider possibilities. Try getting up earlier, or even sleeping later. If you don’t normally eat, try starting with breakfast. Consider adding or changing a morning exercise routine. These kinds of small tweaks can have a cascading effect and inspire you to make other changes throughout the day.

Try something new : One reason we get into ruts is we become good at what we are doing and then that competence becomes very comfortable. Trying something new is an obvious way to break out of a rut, but if you are feeling hesitant to push yourself in your work, consider trying something new outside of work. This will lower the stakes, while still giving you the challenge you need to break out of the groove you are in. Once you are reminded that you can take on new challenges successfully you can push yourself to take on something new in a more demanding arena.

Create a challenge : The idea of challenges made the rounds on the internet a few years ago and they are still a regular feature on some community sites and blogs. The basic idea is to do something, or not do something, every day for 30 days in a row. A good challenge can incorporate nearly anything — exercise and other health habits are always popular, as are creative pursuits such as writing or photography . It really doesn’t matter what it is — just challenge yourself to change something for a whole month. See how you feel after the challenge period is over.

Go on an adventure : The best way to break up your routine is to get out of your regular environment. This one of the many reasons that travel can be so invigorating. But if you haven’t got the time or budget to go on a long trip you can still employ this technique. The easiest way is with your weekends — spend an entire day out and about, exploring new places. It’s not that hard to find new things to do and see even relatively close to home. You can also consider changing up your weekday space — if your job allows, work at a coffee shop for a few hours or even a day. Move around your office — most offices now are open spaces and have communal spots where you can spend some time. Even just find a new spot to grab lunch a few times a week can help to reinvigorate you.

Declutter something : Yeah, Marie Kondo is on to something. There can be life-changing magic in cleaning something up. Ever moved? Yeah, you know that feeling. You don’t have to do a full Kondo to get the rut-busting benefit of decluttering. Start with one spot — a closet, the kitchen cabinets, your home office. Even just cleaning off your desk can give you a new perspective and help you bust of your rut.

Everyone experiences ruts, periods of time where they feel like they’re not getting enough done, they don’t feel like what they’re doing is meaningful, they don’t like who they are and they’re living the same day, day in and day out, like Groundhog Day. But since everyone gets into ruts, what differentiates people is how quickly they recognize they’re in one, and take action to get out of it. Here are six ways to get out of a rut:

1. Acknowledge The Problem

You can not get out of a rut if you don’t acknowledge you’re in one. It’s not normal for you to be be unhappy and not performing well. Forgive yourself for not noticing sooner, for letting yourself go this long without addressing it. The important thing is you’re addressing it now.

2. Break Things Down Into Steps

If you’ve fallen behind in work, working out, keeping in touch with family or friends, etc., make a list, break things down into steps and check things off one by one. If you think of everything you need to do you can easily get overwhelmed, so don’t get overwhelmed, write everything down and get to work, chipping away one task at a time.

3. Done Is Better Than Perfect

If you get hung up on perfection, you will never finish a project and you will never feel good about your work, and neither one of things is productive for you or your work. Sometimes, when you’ve worked and worked and worked, it’s 6 p.m. and it’s time to turn it in. It won’t get any better. All you can do is try your best, and take solace in the fact that good or bad, it is your best effort, and there will be another day and another project for you to do better.

4. Get Some Fresh Air

Nothing will help rejuvenate your energy than a quick walk around the block to get some sun and fresh air, maybe grab a coffee or tea if so inclined. It will help you focus, and help open any mental roadblocks you may have hit staring at a screen.

5. Get Some Exercise

Feeling stressed or anxious, and you’re not able to focus? If you can, perhaps set work aside and go for a run, or to a yoga class, something to get your blood flowing and a way to realize that stress and anxiety in a healthy way. It will help manage your emotions, and will also help increase your focus and energy.

6. Talk To Someone

If you’re struggling with work, discuss your issues with a trusted colleague or mentor. If you have a personal struggle, talk to a friend or family member, or seek professional help. You don’t have to go through things alone, if you reach out, people are ready and willing to help you. You’re not the only one who has ever been through difficult times, so reach out, and do not be ashamed.

7. Keep Moving Forward

A great quote that is often attributed to Winston Churchill, (though sources have had trouble verifying it) summarizes this well, “If you’re going through hell, keep going.” So much of success isn’t built on brilliance, it’s mostly people who just refuse to give up. If you stick with it, and keep doing the work, you will work yourself out of this rut and get back on track.

Have you ever felt that sense that there is more to life? That feeling that pulls you to do something bigger and bolder than you have done before? It’s not uncommon to feel this way. We all have an inner-GPS trying to guide us to experience a full and meaningful life. But instead, all too easily, we get stuck in a rut and keep living out the same daily routine over and over again. Nothing new or exciting happens. It’s just the same old same old, and our soul begins to wither and dry up from a lack of spiritual H2O. Quench your spiritual thirst! What ever happened to all the dreams and desires you used to have? What happened to living a life of purpose and significance? It’s easy to play it safe, stay practical, and stare off into the clouds dreaming. (By the way, I’ve been doing that most of my life, and it’s not worth it!) What if instead of wishing and hoping that things could be different, you started creating what you want to experience today?

I know it sounds easier said than done, but why not try? Why not decide what would make you incredibly fulfilled; what would give you a sense of true aliveness and go for it. You don’t have to be irresponsible and risk your life savings or personal security. We all have our personal comfort zone we can stretch. Where in life could you start looking beyond the bubble you have surrounded yourself with? You just have to start dreaming again. How can you start dreaming? Start by creating your “life list.” The list of all the things and experiences that would make life complete. Who knows, maybe there is something you could even check off today.

Create your Life List

Step 1: Brainstorming session

Are you ready? Grab a sheet of paper, or something to write on, and title it “My Life List.” This is the list of all the goals, aspirations, and experiences that would make up a legendary life for you. Now, start listing and brainstorming all the things you desire to experience, create, and attain in your life. Don’t limit yourself. Get everything out of your head and put it onto this list. Here are some questions to help you get started. 1. What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail? 2. What are the three most important aspirations you have right now? 3. If you only had six months to live, how would you spend your time? What would you want to do? 4. What have you always wanted to do but were afraid to try?

Step 2: Organize ideas

This step isn’t totally necessary but it can help bring clarity and order to your list if it’s long and random. So, after you have listed all your dreams and desires, put them into different categories to help you organize them. This might include family, health, personal accomplishments, finances, recreation, travel, etc. A good example for inspiration would be The Impossible List by Joel Runyon of Impossible HQ. (He happens to be one of the featured interviews in the Becoming Unstoppable course)

Publish a children’s self-help book 3. Flying a plan 3. Starting a t-shirt company Attend 1. A Zen retreat 2. TED Conference I know this can seem overwhelming. How can I possibly do all of these different things, right? Fortunately, you have your entire life, not matter what age you are.

And frankly, if you don’t check all of them off of your list, doing some is better than none, right?

Step 3: Set SMART goals

The next step after creating your list is to prioritize your dreams and give them a time frame. Break them down into long-term, mid-term, and short-term goals. Select a few that you want to accomplish or experience in the next year, a few to do in the next 6 months, within the next month, and even next week. Get specific about what you want to accomplish and by when.

Step 4: Support your Dreams

A last but crucial step is to consider how your current way of life lines up with these dreams. Explore the barriers or obstacles that could get in your way currently, as well as what you can do to stay motivated and committed. Here are a few ideas to consider.

  • Connect with supportive people or find a partner in crime to keep you accountable.
  • Create a vision board – Put together a collage of pictures, phrases, and images, that represent the manifestation of your goals.
  • Take small daily actionsto keep momentum moving. Start by doing some research and learning more about what you want.

Routine isn’t all bad. But when you’re completely stuck in old habits, you pretty much label yourself the snail on the racetrack. Todd Mitchem, speaker, Fortune 500 leadership consultant and author of the recently released book You, Disrupted, believes you have the power to jumpstart yourself into a completely new way of living where you’re both fulfilled and back in control.

I hesitate to write this because blogs like this usually involve some cheesy rah, rah advice that’s not practical for making it in this messed world we live in today. I lived a life that could best be described as existing — for years. After using the advice I’m going to give you today, I was able to break free. I lost 170 pounds; I paid off $180,000 in debt and moved our family to our dream destination of Maui, Hawaii. Everyday life feels surreal, but when I pinch myself, I smile because I’m living my dream life.

Now, I realize there’s not a one-size-fits-all solution to what each of us may be going through in life. But, we all have a choice to make. We can choose to accept our circumstances, or we can choose to make the effort to rise above them. That choice usually starts with what you believe about yourself and your dream.

Everywhere you look there is bad news. Every day there’s something in your life that doesn’t work out the way you wanted it to. You can let those circumstances make or break you and too often we’re broken. 1. Get honest about what you want from life. It’s scary to admit what you want to do and what you want from your life. You may want something that’s well outside of your comfort zone and even scares others in your life, but those dreams are in your heart and mind for a reason. Sit down and say it out loud. No matter how crazy it sounds — get real.

2. Use the Internet to research your dream. We live in a time where information is readily available. If you own a smartphone or have access to the Internet, you can research what it would take to make your dream life a reality. You don’t have to guess, chances are someone has mapped out what you need to know.

3. Put a plan together and take the first steps. If your dream life is going to become a reality, you’re going to need a plan. It’s amazing how many people “wing it” and end up failing. If you want to quit your job — you should have another job/business in your plan and an emergency fund. If you wish to lose weight — you should map out a healthy diet and exercise plan. You get the picture, but the plan, implemented over time, is how you’ll reach your goals.

4. Ignore self-limiting beliefs and negative people. Along the journey to your dream life, you’ll encounter doubt, fear, and self-limiting beliefs. There will be people in your life who don’t get it and will make their opinion known. If you listen to any negativeness, it will convince you what you want is impossible, and you won’t take the necessary steps to make your dream life a reality.

5. Choose to live life every day. You can miss so much that life has to offer with the chaos and busyness of life. It’s easy to get caught in routines and what feels comfortable. The problem is that all anyone is guaranteed is this moment. It’s important to live each day as if it were the last because it very well may be.

It bothers me to see so many people who are not waking up every day and experiencing freedom in their life. I realize this is a short article among thousands you’ll probably read, but my hope is that this is a starting point. It will be hard, and it will take time. There will be many times along the way that you’ll feel like giving up — don’t.

Your dream life is attainable, but more than that, it’s important. Life is short, and each of us only gets one life to live. Choose to believe in yourself. Choose to believe in what’s possible, and then do something about it. Start today and don’t give up until you wake up experiencing true freedom in every area of your life.
