Sometimes life starts spinning out of control and you start to feel like you’ve lost your balance. If you recognize any of these signs creeping into your life, take immediate action to regain control over your overall health and well-being, and restore balance and peace.

1. You have chronic exhaustion.

You are burned out! Every day you wake up tired, and with so much on your plate, you don’t know where to start. You are starting to show signs of chronic fatigue and have lost your enthusiasm for life.

Solution: Reclaim your life by learning how to say “yes” without resentment and “no” without regret. Clear your calendar of all commitments that do not serve or feed you emotionally. Stop doing things out of a false sense of obligation. Offload what you can so you have time to sleep, eat properly, and take care of yourself.

2. Your loved ones are missing you.

Your family does not see you anymore because you are always “busy with work”. You miss out on birthdays, family vacations, or other important family-related events. You haven’t caught up with your friends in ages, and your partner never sees you.

Solution: Clear your calendar and give the people you love the time they deserve. Making your loved ones a priority will feed you emotionally, and might just give you a much-needed energy boost. You will be able to show up refreshed and more focused for work. Have the audacity to set priorities in a way that suits you. The world will not end because you set new boundaries.

3. Your life feels unmanageable.

You start losing your cool and become very reactive to life’s passing dramas. Instead of being a source of stillness, you end up overreacting. You cannot think clearly and feel overwhelmed at the slightest sign of difficulty.

Solution: Slow down and learn how to manage delays. Take a deep breath and pause before reacting to anything. Take up a meditation practice, which teaches you how to remain calm and composed in all situations.

4. You have insomnia.

You’ve got so much work on your mind that you can’t sleep, or you wake up in the middle of the night thinking about what needs to get done.

Solution: Learn how to increase the quality of your sleep.

  • Make your to-do list at the end of the day. Clear your head by unloading everything that needs to get done to organize and plan for the coming day or week.
  • Turn off your gadgets and electronics an hour before you go to bed. Instead of watching TV, read a book.
  • Create a relaxing end-of-day ritual. For example, take a hot shower, meditate, and have a cup of herbal tea. Go to bed before midnight and get at least seven hours of sleep.

5. Clutter and chaos are everywhere in your life.

Your life has turned into a cluttered mess. The desk, the closet, the house, the purse…everything is in a state of disarray.

Solution: Your life needs an efficiency makeover. A little bit of discipline goes a long way. Make incremental changes toward organization. End your day by organizing, optimizing, and preparing for the next day. Take frequent breaks to regroup, declutter your space, and clear your mind. Once your mind is clear, you will find it easier to organize your life.

When life feels out of whack and you’ve lost your balance, it’s time to take action and set some new boundaries for yourself. Self-care must be a priority since we cannot produce anything of substance when we are depleted and overwhelmed.

Keep in mind that when teens seem “out of control”, it’s actually their way of being in control. At the very least, they use this behavior to control their parents’ reactions. Parents need to understand what behaviors can be considered acceptable, and those that can be considered as warning signs to more serious problems. Being moody, short-tempered, restless, secretive or other similar attitudes aren’t usually causing for alarm. However, when your teen starts being abusive (physically, verbally, or emotionally) towards siblings or other kids, when they start stealing, coming home intoxicated or high on drugs, not coming home some nights, or getting in trouble with the law, these are signs that should not be ignored.

Here are 13 simple tips that may help parents get their out of control teens back on the right track:

Talk to your teen – Teens will probably tell you why they’re acting the way that they are acting, but it’s rarely the real reason. Listen to them and read between the lines. Help your teen figure out what they are feeling because sometimes they need to be walked through these things too.

Reiterate house rules – Teens will challenge your rules and often ignore them, but you need to stick to them anyway.

Follow through with consequences – Being consistent with consequences is a helpful way of teaching teens about accountability. Taking away privileges may work.

Pick your battles – Picking on every little thing that your teen does wrong will create a toxic home atmosphere. Pick your battles and stick to the issues that are really important for you.

There are two main types of derailments to your ideal life: 1) A master plan derailed by life’s happenings — like having a child with special needs or having a spouse pass away. 2) The second kind of derailment occurs when you feel stuck. For example, you thought you would organically meet Mr. or Mrs. Right, and while you waited, life passed you by — leaving you in the dust.

You feel confused about how you ended up alone — no partner, no children. People tell you that you are beautiful, smart, talented and loveable. So why are you single, feeling ashamed and stuck? Though you may feel like your life was out of your control, you have actually had a hand in unconsciously choosing this path. Imagine that — throughout your childhood — your parents leaned on you excessively for support, instead of the other way around. If you felt oppressed by this upbringing, you may find yourself moving your life across the country and missing the window to have children. Somehow in your unconscious mind, you knew you didn’t want anymore people/kids depending on you. Therefore your choice of moving away made it much more difficult to have kids.

Are you the kind of person who constantly picks inappropriate romantic partners? It isn’t just bad luck. Maybe your parents’ awful marriage made it unconsciously impossible to really want to be married. So making poor romantic choices is an unconscious compromise. You want to get married, but instead find yourself dating married or otherwise unavailable men or women — another unconscious compromise.

How can you get back on track? It’s difficult to know your own truths, but that has to happen first.

1. Explore your mind by tracking the mixed messages you give yourself. For example, you really want to get married. You live in a remote area and have a hard time meeting people. But you refuse to join an online dating service. Or maybe you want to lose weight, but you refuse to go to the gym until you are thinner. It’s important to recognize these inconsistencies in your thoughts and behavior.

2. Confront the thoughts that truly terrify you. Notice where your mind goes when you think about the possibility of changing your life’s direction. Do you derail yourself with negative thoughts? Instead, stay focused on your thoughts and visualize achieving your goals.

3. Know when “your stuckness” needs professional help. Find a therapist who understands that change is dependent on understanding your unconscious mind. How do you know if you may need therapy? Listen to your loved ones. Do they accuse you of making excuses for why things don’t work out. Or maybe you’re convinced you must settle for the life you have instead of going after what you want and deserve. Just because you got derailed, does not mean you have to be stuck. If you realize that, your life is exactly where it needs to be.

Weight gain is often a side effect, of course, but your mindset about life in general can quickly spiral. Here are some tips on reclaiming power over your life when everything feels out of whack.

Tip #1: Make a commitment to yourself—and keep it. One of the most powerful ways to take control of your life is to build on small successes. When you make a plan and follow through, you build confidence in your abilities. If you’ve been skipping workouts because of a “What’s the point?” attitude, schedule one immediately. And then do it. You’ll be signaling to yourself that, even if you can’t trust the world to be a safe place, you can trust yourself. When one workout is completed, schedule another one. Or vow to eat one healthy meal today. When you feel great after that meal, you’ll probably want to keep that momentum going by eating two healthy meals tomorrow. Good choices lead to more good choices.

Tip #2: Take yourself off of autopilot. Many of us have a “default” answer in times of stress. For some, it’s an automatic “yes,” even when we don’t really want to. For others, it’s an automatic “no,” often stemming from fear. Neither of these is helpful in regaining a sense of control over your life. To avoid answering immediately and, likely, giving your usual reply, prepare a simple statement (perhaps “I’ll let you know soon”) in response to any request that comes your way. Then really think about what’s being asked of you. Do you usually agree to serve on committees, even though it zaps time you could use for meal prep or exercise? Consider passing this time. Are you scared to meet up with friends because of Covid-19? Maybe taking a socially distanced walk together will help you feel safe while also allowing you to connect with your support system.

Tip #3: Take tomorrow off the table. When things around you feel chaotic, it’s easy to retreat into an attitude of “maybe tomorrow.” Maybe tomorrow you’ll make better gastric sleeve diet choices. Maybe tomorrow you’ll feel like swapping the couch for a workout. Getting lost in the uncertainty of events around you is a common way to process fear, anxiety, stress, and other not-so-great feelings. But if you don’t make progress today, chances are that you won’t begin to take charge of your life tomorrow either. Start small if that feels better. Organize one drawer, rather than the whole kitchen. Prep meals for tomorrow, rather than the entire week. If your personality is “go big or go home,” however, take a bigger plunge today. Purge your closet and donate clothes that are too big, which has the added benefit of helping remove the safety net of a comfortable wardrobe in case of significant weight regain.

Tip #4: Step back from the negative. When things go sideways, many people believe that getting every last bit of information will help alleviate their fears. Often, the opposite is true. Watching bad news all day or spending hours online tracking the partner who left you leaves little room for thinking about things you can control. Step back from the negative and focus on making positive choices for your health and happiness.

2020 has been … interesting to say the least. I came into the year so excited to move forward with Momtography Club and our brand new way of working with women on their creative projects.

I was feeling great about the potential and impact this would have on myself and our community. It was a new year, a fresh start. I had a plan … and then it all went sideways.

I bet you also have a list of all the expectations, and plans, and dreams that were cancelled. All those unfortunate ways you have been thrown off course since the year started.

Let’s get back on track together, shall we?

5 Ways to Get Back on Track with Your Goals

In case you haven’t figured it out, life will go sideways again and again. You’ll get off track just as you were gaining momentum. You’ll be moving right along and something will happen. You’ll be struggling to gain traction and feel like everything is working against you. You’re not doing something wrong. This just happens. You can’t control what happens. You can be prepared (to an extent) and you can control how you deal with it.

Be kind to yourself.

First of all, don’t beat yourself up. We all get off track sometimes, usually for reasons out of our control. Acknowledge that things aren’t going the way you want, but don’t blame yourself. If you hear yourself saying, “I should have …” stop. Ask this instead: How do I deal with situation? What can I do differently next time? What can I learn from this experience?

Then take a break. Go for a walk or a run. Take a nap or a bath. Do whatever you do to chill out. Get your mind off of all the things that have gone wrong and all the things you need to do. When you do, you open up space for problem solving or at least approaching things with your thinking brain.

Problem solve creatively.

Sometimes we get stuck. We’re so overwhelmed we can’t even see our way out, but there is always a way to get back on track. Here’s what I love to do: Get curious. Wonder what would happen if you did X. Wonder if it’s possible to do Y. Like this: Could I write a book in 21 days? What would happen if I got childcare for one full day a week? Could I go away for a weekend and get this done?

If you hear yourself saying, “I can’t to X because …” or “I want to … but …” it’s time to get curious.

Take a fresh start and recommit.

It’s important to commit. I bet you started off this year super committed. I know I started off the year committed to my dreams and then life happened and I lost focus. But I know that doesn’t mean I’m done. It just means it’s time to recommit. I took a break. I looked at what I wanted to do again and refocused my energy—and I recommitted. And for those of you like me who get bored easily when things are going well or are too easy, that’s another time to recommit (and maybe get curious … how can I do this differently to stay on course and stay engaged?)

Schedule time for YOU.

Put your passion project on your calendar before other things—and then use that time for YOU. This is a big resistance point for a lot of women. We hear it. We may even know that we should. And we don’t.

If you’re saying, “But I already have appointments that were hard to schedule” or “What about my kids schedule?” Put that previously planned stuff in your calendar. Then before you schedule anything else, put in time for you and your projects. That might mean blocking off Saturday and saying no to plans with friends so you can go to the art studio or inking in your writer’s group and skipping the PTO meeting. If you do one thing and make this the year you put yourself and your dreams on the calendar first, you will change things dramatically.

Make a plan.

A dream is glorious. A goal is a destination. And without a plan, you’re not going to get there. A plan helps you break down that BIG thing you want to do into smaller parts and doable steps. You don’t sit down every day and say I’m going to write my book. You say, I’m outlining chapter 4 or I’m writing for 30 minutes about this topic or I’m revising this essay. Your plan helps you see all the pieces that need to get done—and when you will do each piece. This is where we often get off track. We have a great plan and then life knocks us off track. You still know what needs to be done, you just need to adjust your timeline.

Honestly, planning isn’t my strong suit, but I know that I move forward better with a plan, which brings me to the next tip—get support.

Connect and get support.

I know I’m not a great planner, so I’m working with a coach who is. As part of that process, I’m also connected to an amazing group of women who support me in my business goals. I have running partners to help me with my running goals.

We often think of creative activities as solitary pursuits, but even in our creative lives we need connection, we need mentors, we need support. These supporters provide accountability. I learn from them. I share with them. And when it’s just a crappy day, I turn to them. Who do you have to turn to? How how will you say yes to YOU today?

Tip #1: Make a commitment to yourself—and keep it. One of the most powerful ways to take control of your life is to build on small successes. When you make a plan and follow through, you build confidence in your abilities. If you’ve been skipping workouts because of a “What’s the point?” attitude, schedule one immediately. And then do it. You’ll be signaling to yourself that, even if you can’t trust the world to be a safe place, you can trust yourself. When one workout is completed, schedule another one. Or vow to eat one healthy meal today. When you feel great after that meal, you’ll probably want to keep that momentum going by eating two healthy meals tomorrow. Good choices lead to more good choices.

Tip #2: Take yourself off of autopilot. Many of us have a “default” answer in times of stress. For some, it’s an automatic “yes,” even when we don’t really want to. For others, it’s an automatic “no,” often stemming from fear. Neither of these is helpful in regaining a sense of control over your life. To avoid answering immediately and, likely, giving your usual reply, prepare a simple statement (perhaps “I’ll let you know soon”) in response to any request that comes your way. Then really think about what’s being asked of you. Do you usually agree to serve on committees, even though it zaps time you could use for meal prep or exercise? Consider passing this time. Are you scared to meet up with friends because of Covid-19? Maybe taking a socially distanced walk together will help you feel safe while also allowing you to connect with your support system.

Tip #3: Take tomorrow off the table. When things around you feel chaotic, it’s easy to retreat into an attitude of “maybe tomorrow.” Maybe tomorrow you’ll make better gastric sleeve diet choices. Maybe tomorrow you’ll feel like swapping the couch for a workout. Getting lost in the uncertainty of events around you is a common way to process fear, anxiety, stress, and other not-so-great feelings. But if you don’t make progress today, chances are that you won’t begin to take charge of your life tomorrow either. Start small if that feels better. Organize one drawer, rather than the whole kitchen. Prep meals for tomorrow, rather than the entire week. If your personality is “go big or go home,” however, take a bigger plunge today. Purge your closet and donate clothes that are too big, which has the added benefit of helping remove the safety net of a comfortable wardrobe in case of significant weight regain.

Tip #4: Step back from the negative. When things go sideways, many people believe that getting every last bit of information will help alleviate their fears. Often, the opposite is true. Watching bad news all day or spending hours online tracking the partner who left you leaves little room for thinking about things you can control. Step back from the negative and focus on making positive choices for your health and happiness.
