Here you will know how to Install extensions on Microsoft Edge.

The Microsoft Edge browser was introduced back in 2015, but it was similar to Internet Explorer in terms of performance. Now things have changed a lot, and Microsoft Edge browser also received major tweaks.

The main advantage of Microsoft Edge is that it is based on the Chromium browser engine same as Chrome. It means you are going to get all features and support that are available on Google Chrome.

We know Google Chrome is a heavy browser and eats a lot of available resources. But now Microsoft Edge is offering the same features without using heavy resources. And Microsoft Edge offers Privacy and Security. Everyone loves Google Chrome because of its wide range of extensions, themes and customization. And now we can get all these features on Microsoft Edge too.

How to install extensions in microsoft edge

The process is similar to the Google Chrome browser. In Fact you will also get a developer mode option in case you want to test any of your extensions on your Microsoft Edge. It is quite easy and useful. You can also install custom extensions directly from Chrome Store.

As Microsoft Edge offers to sync all the items including Extensions, so if you are using your old ID, allow the sync feature to get back your Extensions. Once you have added your ID and want to add more Extensions then follow the steps given below.

Steps to Add Extensions on Microsoft Edge from Store

There are more than one ways to add extensions on Microsoft Edge. Such as installing extensions using a crx file (extension file) or installing extensions directly from the Extension store or Chrome Store. Let’s start with the common method which is installing from the Extension store.

  1. Open the latest Microsoft Edge browser on your computer.
  2. Login with your Microsoft ID if you intend to use it on a regular basis. You can also skip this step.
  3. Now click on the three dots on top right and select Extensions option.
  4. On the left pane make sure ‘Allow Extensions from other stores‘ option is enabled, if you want to install Extensions from Chrome web store.

  9. It will download and install the Extension on Microsoft Edge browser.
  10. Now you can access the Extension by clicking on the Extension icon.

In case you don’t find an extension on Microsoft Edge store, then you can install either from Chrome Store or using CRX file. As this is an uncommon method, so we have a step by step guide for you.

Steps to Add Extensions on Microsoft Edge Manually (CRX file)

As the latest Microsoft Edge works the same as Chrome, you can also install CRX extension files on Edge. It means if you uninstalled any extension by mistake and want to restore then you can follow this guide. Here we are going to Install IDM CRX file on Microsoft Edge as an example to explain the method. You can replace other Extensions to IDM to install other extensions with the same process.

You will need a CRX file for this which you will find on the web or from the folder where you installed that specific app. Such as if you installed IDM on default location then you can find the IDMGCExt.crx file in C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Download Manager. Let’s now get into the guide.

  1. First download or find the crx file of the extension you want to install.
  2. Update your Microsoft Edge to the latest version and open it.
  3. Click on three dots in the top right and select Extensions.
  4. Now enable ‘Developer Mode’ on the left pane. How to install extensions in microsoft edge
  5. Go to the location where the extension CRX file is located.
  6. Drag the crx file and drop in the Microsoft Edge extension page.
  7. It will ask for confirmation in the pop-up, so hit ‘Add Extension’ to proceed. How to install extensions in microsoft edge
  8. Now it will install on the Edge browser and you can use it normally.

So this is an easy process to add extensions on Edge browser. As the process is similar to Chrome, you will not find it hard. I hope you find the guide helpful. And if you do, make sure to share with other Microsoft Edge users.

You can also block or disable extensions in Microsoft Edge from Windows registry.

If you’re logged in as an administrator, you can also disable this feature via Windows registry. To do that, use the steps below:

Using Windows registry is one way to force all users on the system to block or disable extensions from being installed. There are multiples ways to do this in Windows, however, using Windows registry is the easiest and most effective way to do it.

To enable, press the Windows Key + R on your keyboard to open the run command box. Or use the search function to search for the Run app.

In the command box, type the commands below and press Enter.

When Windows registry opens, navigate to the path below. If you don’t see the Edge key, create one.

From there, right-click on the Edge key and select the New > DWORD (32-bit) Value option to create a REG_DWORD value if you don’t see existing BlockExternalExtensions value already created.

If you don’t see Edge key or folder, create one.

Name the new DWORD value as:

After saving the DWORD above, double-click it to open. Then enter the value of 1 to enable. 0 to disable.

This Only Works on Insider Preview Builds (For Now)

You’ll need to be using the Insider Preview version of Windows 10 to install browser extensions. Extension support was added to build 14291, so you should be able to use either the Slow ring or the Fast ring. However, you may need to use the Fast ring to install the latest extensions Microsoft offers. The latest Insider builds of Windows 10 are adding new extension capabilities to Edge.

When the Anniversary Update is released, you’ll be able to browse and install extensions in the Windows Store. For now, you’ll have to sideload them.

If you’re on a stable build of Windows 10, you can still install bookmarklets in Microsoft Edge to get some extension-like functionality.

How to Install Extensions in Microsoft Edge

To install extensions in Microsoft Edge, open the Edge web browser, click or tap the menu button in the top-right corner of the window, and select “Extensions.” If you don’t see an Extensions option in the list here, you’re not using an Insider Preview build of Windows 10.

You’ll see the extensions panel, which will list all your installed extensions. Click or tap the “Get extensions from the Store” and you’ll be taken to the MIcrosoft Edge extensions page on Microsoft’s developer site. As of build 14316, Microsoft is currently offering the Microsoft Translator, Reddit Enhancement Suite, Mouse Gestures, OneNote Clipper, and Pin It (for Pinterest) extensions. More extensions will be added in future preview builds.

How to install extensions in microsoft edge

You can install the extension once you’ve run the .exe file. Click Edge’s menu button again and select “Extensions” to view the Extensions panel. Click the “Load Extension” button.

The extension will appear in your list of installed extensions. To view more information and configure it, tap the extension in the list.

From here, you can enable the “Show button next to the address bar” option if you’d like to see the extension’s icon on Edge’s main toolbar. If you don’t, the extension’s icon will just appear inside the menu.

How to install extensions in microsoft edge

When Edge extensions finally launch, Edge should quickly have a large number of extensions to choose from. Microsoft is giving Edge’s extension ecosystem a big kick-start by making it easy for developers to port their existing Chrome extensions over.

Microsoft Edge now supports extensions. You can download an extension for Edge from the Windows Store. Microsoft has added support for extensions only recently to Edge so there aren’t a lot of them in the Windows Store. Quite a few are still in beta and developers prefer to make them available outside the Windows Store, possibly to avoid poor ratings. If you want to install an extension in Edge, it’s a fairly simple process if you know what to do.

Open Microsoft Edge and in the URL bar, type about:flags and hit enter. In the very first section, look for the ‘Enable extension developer features’ option and check the box next to it to enable it.

You will need to restart Edge. There is no dedicated button for restarting Edge when you make a change to the Flags like there is in Chrome. You have to restart Edge manually by closing and opening the browser.

How to install extensions in microsoft edge

You can now install an extension from outside the Windows Store. Find an extension you want to try out and download it. If you download it as a zipped file, extract it before you proceed to the next step.

Open Edge and click the ‘More’ button at the top right. Go to Extensions and click the ‘Load Extensions’ button. Navigate to the extension folder you just extracted and/or downloaded. You have to select the folder the extension’s files are in, and not a particular file. Select the folder and click the ‘Select folder’ button in the Open file dialog.

How to install extensions in microsoft edge

The extension will be loaded and it will appear in the Extensions panel. You may or may not have to turn it On.

Extensions downloaded from outside the Windows Store can still be verified extensions. A verified extension is an extension that has digitally been signed by a verified developer. An unverified extension can be installed the same way, however, each time you launch Edge, it will disable the unverified extension. You will have to enable it.

A word of caution; extensions installed from outside the Windows Store can be dangerous. Be careful which extensions you choose to install.

How to install extensions in microsoft edge

While Microsoft Edge has now supported extensions for months, the number of extensions remains relatively limited in comparison to the competition. Nonetheless, there are several useful offerings currently available. How does one go about installing these extensions in Microsoft Edge? Check out the step-by-step instructions below for all the details.

Step 1

The first step is a rather obvious one: Launch Microsoft Edge. You will notice an ellipses in the upper-right corner of the browser window. Click the icon, which will open a drop-down menu. Then, click Extensions in the resulting menu to open the Extensions window.

Step 2

Here, you can see which (if any) extensions you’ve previously installed, and access their respective settings. In order to find new extensions to install, you’ll need to download them from the Windows Store. You can browse all available extensions by clicking the blue Get extensions from the Store link.

How to install extensions in microsoft edge Mark Coppock/Digital Trends

Step 3

Once you’ve launched the Windows Store, you should see a list of all available extensions for Microsoft Edge. Scroll through, and find whichever app you’d like to install. Once you’ve picked one, click its icon, which will open up the extension’s page. If it’s available as a free download, you can click the blue Free button to begin installation; if it’s paid, the button will list the download price. Either way, Windows will notify you once the extension has been downloaded and installed successfully.

How to install extensions in microsoft edge Mark Coppock/Digital Trends

Step 4

If you wish to locate an extension in your browser’s navigation bar, you’ll need to enable this separately — and it only works for certain extensions. To do so, click the ellipses in the upper-right corner to open the extensions window again, and select Extensions. Then, click the settings icon for the extension in question and toggle Show button next to address bar so that it is set to on. If you wish to hide any extensions, you can do so in the same way — just make sure the option is set to off instead of on.

Conclusion

Edge extensions can significantly enhance your browser’s functionality, while letting you clip webpages to OneNote, block ads, send webpages to Pocket, and carry out a host other useful actions. As previously mentioned, Microsoft’s browser is also gaining new extensions with every passing day. They’re developed in a similar way to Chrome extensions, and so as Edge gains market share, it’s likely that more developers will begin porting their extensions. In the meantime, keep checking the Windows Store for your favorite extension, and don’t hesitate to ask the developer when their Edge extension will arrive.
