But if you layer enough security practices, the hacker will pluck the low-hanging fruit first, reducing your relative risk of intrusion.
Disable File and Printer Sharing in Windows. If a hacker gains access to your network and all your files and devices are easily discovered from within your home network, your risk of a data breach increases substantially. A “defense-in-depth” approach means you employ several different levels of security access instead of relying on just one strategy.
Start by implementing MAC address filtering on your router so that only the MAC addresses you specify (the ones that belong to your devices) are allowed to connect. This approach isn’t foolproof—it’s easy to spoof a MAC address—but this level of filtering adds one extra step to hack through and dissuades low-skill, opportunistic Wi-Fi leeches.
Similarly, limit DHCP addresses to the exact number of devices you regularly use so that no new devices are allowed an IP address even if they manage to get past your Wi-Fi password.
Most importantly: disable Wi-Fi Protected Setup. WPS allows one-touch pairing of a device to your router, but it’s notoriously insecure. WPS-enabled routers usually get hacked within a matter of minutes by following online tutorials that rely on easily available freeware.
If you live in a rural area, you’re likely fine with just baseline precautions. To infiltrate your Wi-Fi network, a hacker must remain within Wi-Fi range, about 300 feet or so from the router. If your house is 500 feet from the road and your nearest neighbor is a quarter-mile away, an attacker would need to be on your property to hack your Wi-Fi.
But if you live in a dense urban area or in proximity to others (e.g., in a dorm), the risk increases. Advanced technology to brute-force attack Wi-Fi routers has long been available as freely downloadable, open-source tools. Software like Reaver will slice through even strong defenses without much difficulty, so you must periodically check your router’s DCHP allocation tables to verify inappropriate access.
Set a task on your calendar to-do list to periodically check your router’s control panel. Look for unauthorized devices. If you use strong security practices but your network is intruded upon repeatedly, reach out to your internet service provider for assistance. Persistent, successful intrusion against a well-protected home network is a sign of trouble that’s worth referring to your ISP.
One thing I absolutely cannot stand is lag when I’m gaming. Every time I’m about to beat my killstreak record on Call of Duty, my internet connection drops and I’m a goner. It never fails. This usually happens because someone else on my Wi-Fi is streaming a movie or downloading a huge file.
Yes, I could log in to my router from my computer and kick off everyone on my Wi-Fi, but that’s too time-consuming, and what if I’m not on my own personal network? Thanks to my Nexus 7 and an app called WiFiKill by developer Bartosz Ponurkiewicz, creator of the famed FaceNiff app, there is an easier and faster way.
WiFiKill lets you easily give people a “timeout” by kicking them off the network temporarily, and it’s helpful for more than just games (e.g. Netflix streaming quality) and for more than just your own network.
How to Install WiFiKill
In order to acquire this app, you will need a rooted Nexus 7 or other rooted device running Android 4.0 or higher. You will also need the WiFiKill Downloader app, which lets you install different versions of WiFiKill, check for updates, and view the changelog.
Once you have the Downloader app installed, open it up and select Download & install FREE version to test out the free version of WiFiKill. The free version has ads and lasts for only five minutes (hence the “timeout”), but that should be long enough for people to quit their attempts of reconnecting.
The paid version is $6.00, removes ads, and disables Wi-Fi for any amount of time, which could be more helpful when you’re on a public Wi-Fi network.
Step 1: Identify & Name Devices
When you first open the app, you’ll be presented with a list of devices connected to your network and their IP addresses once you hit the Start button up top.
Some of these addresses will have a vendor name next to them (i.e. “Apple, Inc.”), but others won’t. To weed out your own devices, you can just find out your IP address in your Wi-Fi or Internet settings on the device.
It’ll most likely be easier with your home Wi-Fi network, as you’ll have fewer devices attached (I’m using my work network as an example). Once you’ve identified your own device (or a bandwidth hog), go ahead and label it for easy finding next time round. Tap on the IP address, then input the name where it says device name.
Step 2: Kill All Connections
At the bottom of the page, select grab all then kill all if you want to kick everyone off Wi-Fi right off the bat. By grabbing a device, you will be able to view traffic and recently visited websites.
Obviously, grabbing all will also kick you off whatever other devices you’re using (e.g. Xbox, PlayStation, computer, etc.), so I recommend doing it on a case-by-case basis (see next step).
Step 3: Kill Individual Connections
Kicking everyone off at once could raise suspicions, especially if you’re the only one left with a working connection. Instead, kick off the bandwidth hogs on an individual level by selecting their device(s), selecting grab, then kill.
This process can seem diabolical, but some of us will go through great lengths to have the internet all to ourselves. Enjoy it for free, or upgrade to unleash its full capability.
And yes, you can use this in some of the more open public Wi-Fi hotspots (these days, most public ones are protected from these types of antics) and kick people off, but just remember to disable the application before you leave.

Do you want your Wi-Fi network to serve only the people that you allow? Then this blog is for you. Wi-Fi networks are a personal gateway to the internet. As a resource that we pay for, it could become troublesome for you to enjoy your internet to its full experience if the network is overcrowded. You can tackle this problem by kicking people off your Wi-Fi network.
In the blog, we’ll explain a couple of ways that you can boot users off the Wi-Fi, and also talk about tips to keep the Wi-Fi network from unauthorized access. All the methods on your Wi-Fi router, so ensure that you have access to the admin settings of the device. Consult the device’s manual or the back of the device of the default login.
Method 1 – Block by MAC Address
Media Access Control (MAC) is a unique identifier of your device that allows networking devices use to distinguish you from other devices on the network. This identifier is hardcoded in the device when it is manufactured, which is why it cannot be changed. IP addresses are assigned to a MAC address, so that’s how a reliable communication is carried out.
Like your address, other devices using the Wi-Fi network have a unique MAC address that you can use to kick them off the network. The first thing you need to do is determine the MAC address of your device, and the devices that you are familiar with.
How to Find MAC Address on Windows
- Press the Windows + R button on your keyword to open Run.
- Type in cmd and click Ok.
- Type ipconfig /all and note the Physical Address of the network adapter that you are using on your PC.
How to Find MAC Address on macOS
- Go to System Preferences >Network.
- Click on Wi-Fi, then click on Advanced.
- In the next window, navigate to the Hardware tab and note down the MAC Address.
How to Find Mac Address on Android
- Go to Settings > About Phone.
- Look for an option like Hardware Information or Status.
- Note down the MAC Address.
How to Find MAC Address on iPhone/iPad
- Go to Settings > General> About.
- Scroll down and note down the Wi-Fi Address.
Once you have the information, it’s time to login to the router. Use the credentials you have to open the router’s settings panel through a web browser. User interface and menus are different across manufacturers, so you may need to search the panel for MAC filtering. The router used for this guide is from TP-Link.
Type in 192.168.0.1 in the web browser. It is the default gateway. If the Wi-Fi router is connected to a modem or another router as an extension, then type in 192.168.1.1.
See which wireless devices you want to exclude from the list and copy their MAC address. Now, go to MAC Filtering, click on Add New, insert the MAC Address, and click Save.
The included devices cannot access the Wi-Fi network now even if they have the password.
Method 2 – Change Password
A password is a basic security that you can place to prevent unknown devices from connecting to your Wi-Fi access point. It will ensure that only devices with the password can utilize your internet. There could be neighbors or someone just outside of your house who suddenly discovered an open Wi-Fi and decided to use it.
Login to your router’s panel by typing 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 in the web browser. Go to the Wireless section and check for an option
Enable WPA/WPA2 authentication. It will allow you to set a password for the Wi-Fi and enable encrypted communication. If the access pointed is already password-protected, then change the password with a new one. Use a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, symbols, and numbers for a strong password that cannot be easily hacked.
By changing the password, all connected devices will immediately be kicked off the network. Then, you connect back your device and share the new password with people you want to allow. Although this method requires that every device has to be connected again, and frequent guests cannot reconnect as soon as they revisit, but it’s slightly easier than finding every MAC Address.
Method 3 (Optional) – Limit Bandwidth Allocation
This is not a method to kick people off the Wi-Fi but works to limit the amount of bandwidth they can use. If slowdowns are your concern, then perhaps you can put restrictions on the download/upload speed, instead of completely blocking access to the devices.
Again, the menus vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, but the setting that you want to be looking for is bandwidth control. First, you’ll need to assign the devices to an IP address. By default, every device on the network is allotted an IP address dynamically. Assigning an IP address by using the MAC Address will ensure it will always be used by the device when connected. It is the first step towards putting the device in the bandwidth control rule list.
Once in the Bandwidth Control page, click on the button to add devices. Enter the IP address of the device you want to restrict. Here’s a helpful pointer for you. If the option allows you to restrict devices by assigning an IP range, then it will make things easier for you. If you have 5 devices, then assign the IP in a series, so that you can apply a blanket bandwidth control rule on the IP range. (192.168.0.10 to 192.168.0.15, for example)
Egress Bandwidth is the upload speed, and Ingress Bandwidth is download speed.
Even if you don’t experience any slowdowns, it’s a good practice to check for connected devices in the router from time to time. Another good practice is to reset your router password after a couple of months.

There are lots of ports in my small office but sometimes I want to kick out people who are accessing internet instead of doing their job. With arp -a i can look for all of the connected users. Unless your desktop is the central proxy server you will have to go through the router. Just because you can see other machines with arp doesn’t mean you can do anything with them.
Kicking them off the network via the router will usually be total – does the office staff depend on the network do do their jobs?
A better way is running your own DNS server. You can then simply redirect any time-sucking service somewhere else in a manner that makes it look like the site is temporarily down, like this:
192.168.1.252 runs an Apache vhost site named facebook.com , it serves up a clone of the FB maintenance page for any URL.

- For some routers, you’ll have to find the Parental Controls section instead.
