Once finished, Disney+ will be linked. You can now say things to your Google Nest or Home smart speaker or smart display like, “Hey Google, play ‘Even Stevens’ on Living Room TV” and the show will start playing on your Google Assistant-powered device.

Starting today, Disney Plus’ library of TV shows and movies is available to stream on smart displays like the Nest Hub and the Nest Hub Max, Google has announced. Google says all “Google Assistant-enabled” smart displays will support the feature, which should include similar devices from JBL and Lenovo. Content can be started with a voice command, such as “Hey Google, play The Mandalorian on Disney Plus.”

Streaming Disney Plus on Google smart displays was possible in the past using the Chromecast-enabled Disney Plus app on another device to “cast” a TV show or film to the display. Now, it can be done directly from the smart display itself. You can use a voice command to start a piece of content playing, and Google says that the smart display’s touchscreen can be used to pause and resume playback, as well as skipping forwards and backwards.

In order to enable the functionality, Google says you’ll need to link a Disney Plus account in the Google Home or Assistant app. It’s available in the US, UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, Austria, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Netherlands, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand starting today, and Google says Disney Plus will roll out to more regions in the coming months.

Disney Plus joins Netflix, which started streaming on Google’s smart displays in July. In addition to control via voice commands, Netflix also lets you browse content through the smart display’s touchscreen controls. It even supports gesture controls via the Nest Hub Max’s camera, letting you pause or resume playback by holding up your hand. In the case of Disney Plus, Google says you won’t be able to browse and select content using the smart display’s touchscreen (you’ll have to use voice commands for that), but confirmed that it does support gesture control.

As we mentioned at the Netflix announcement, a small smart display isn’t going to be the most immersive viewing experience. But if you just want to have The Simpsons on in the background while you’re doing the dishes, playing it on a smart display is a pretty convenient solution.

Update September 22nd, 11:22AM ET: Updated with release markets and confirmation that there’s no support for browsing content using touch controls.

– There's Frozen interactive story rolling out too

(Pocket-lint) – Disney+ now supports Google Assistant voice controls on smart displays like Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max. Here’s everything you need to know.

How to control Disney+ with Google Assistant on smart displays

To get started using Google Assistant commands with Disney+ on your smart display, you’ll have to link your Disney+ subscription to your Google Home or Google Assistant app. Once you do that, just say something like “Hey Google, play Togo” or “Hey Google, play The Mandalorian”.

Link your Disney+ account

  1. Open the Google Home app on your mobile device.
  2. At the top right, tap your account.
  3. Make sure your mobile device is connected to the same Wi-Fi as your smart display.
  4. Go back to the home page, and at the top left, tap Add + > Videos and photos.
  5. Tap Link > Link Account.
  6. Complete the sign-in steps. You will need your Disney+ login credentials.

Voice command examples

  • “Hey Google, play Togo”
  • “Hey Google, play The Mandalorian”.

Keep in mind Disney+ has long been available on Google Assistant-enabled smart displays since late 2019. You can also already use Google Assistant to play Netflix, Hulu, CBS All Access, and HBO content. This new Disney+ capability is still a welcomed addition, though, especially for those of you streaming from a Nest Hub or Hub Max.

Check out Google’s support page for more details. If this new feature doesn’t yet work for you, Google did say voice controls are not yet available in all markets.

Is that it?

Nope. Google also announced a new Frozen-themed interactive story, in which characters from the movie – Anna, Elsa, Olaf, and Kristoff – tell stories around the campfire that explore the world of Frozen 2. To get started just say, “Hey Google, tell me a ‘Frozen’ story”, and then you can pick which character you’d like to narrate.

Smart displays like the Nest Hub can now stream Disney+ directly, with help from Google Assistant.

If you own a Google Assistant-enabled smart display, like the Nest Hub or Nest Hub Max, you can now stream Disney+ directly to it.

Plus, to get you in the mood, you can buy a Mickey Mouse stand to give your Google Home and Nest Mini an iconic makeover.

Get Disney+ On Your Smart Display With Google Assistant

As reported on The Keyword, Google has now built support for Disney+ into its Google Assistant-enabled smart displays. This includes products directly from Google like the Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max, but also those from third-parties like Lenovo and JBL.

The feature is available to those in the US, Canada, Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK. Further regions will follow in the coming months.

Previously, the only available method to watch Disney+ on a Google smart display was by casting from a mobile device.

To get started, all you need to do is link your Disney+ account in the Google Home or Assistant app. Once done, simply speak to your smart display and ask it to play any movie or show from Disney+.

For example, if you want to watch the Mulan remake on Disney+, say, “Hey Google, play Mulan on Disney+”. Alternatively, you can use gesture control to browse.

Unfortunately, you can’t browse using the smart display’s touchscreen. This is something that Netflix supports on Google’s smart displays, having come to the platform in July.

Customize Your Google Home Mini With Mickey Mouse

To celebrate the new Disney+ integration, Google has teamed up with OtterBox to create a custom Mickey Mouse base accessory for the Google Home and Nest Mini.

The OtterBox Den Series featuring Mickey Mouse clips to the base of the device so that you can highlight your Disney appreciation to everyone.

Want to spend more time with Baby Yoda on your Google smart display? You can now ask Google Assistant to play The Mandalorian, a Marvel epic, a Pixar movie, or any other Disney+ videos on your Google Nest Hub or Hub Max.

Mentioned in this article

Google has announced that starting today, you can control Disney+ using your voice on either of Google’s Nest smart displays. The feature is rolling out now to “select” worldwide markets, Google said.

While it’s been possible to cast video from the Disney+ app to the Nest Hub or Nest Hub Max via Chromecast since Disney’s streaming service went live last November, you couldn’t control playback with your voice, nor could you ask Google Assistant to tee up a particular Disney+ video.

To get started, you’ll need to link your Disney+ account with the Google Home app. To do so, open Google Home, tap the “+” button in the upper-left corner of the screen, tap Videos, then tap Link under the Disney+ entry. If you don’t see Disney+ listed yet (I don’t see it on Google Home either), it’s probably because Google is still rolling out the update.

Once you have Disney+ linked in Google Home, you can say (for example) “Hey Google, play The Mandalorian on Disney+” to get another glimpse of Baby Yoda.

The arrival of Disney+ voice control on the Google Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max comes just a couple of months after the two Google smart displays got support for Netflix streaming.

While the competing Amazon Echo Show can stream TV shows and movies from Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and a other video streaming services, it doesn’t natively support Disney+ or Netflix. You can stream Netflix on an Echo Show via the Silk web browser, but it’s a clunky process, and I couldn’t get Disney+ to work at all on Silk.

Besides Disney+ and Netflix, the Google Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max support Hulu, CBS All Access and Sling TV, while you can use Chromecast to stream videos from the HBO Max and Showtime apps, among many others.
