How to live in the present and make your time count

How to live in the present and make your time count

Well, tomorrow is New Year’s Day. I cannot believe this year has already flown by. Who can relate? How are you celebrating the beginning of 2015? If you are like me, you are already working on writing down your resolutions. When we write things down, it makes us more likely to commit and follow through.

There is so much out there, especially since we have access to the internet now, to help us learn from wise people. Each year, I try to do one thing to make my life better. As you look into 2015, what do you see? How do you plan to make your life count this year? You never know if this year will be your last. Never take life for granted.

We ourselves only have one life, yet how many lives do you think you have influenced for the better? You only have one chance to make you life count. What ever has passed, has passed. However we can use it to grow better or bitter. How do you help others with your past and present life. That is the value of a time capsule. There are many tangible items that help define us and our life story so far. There are also things like a New Year’s resolution list that can help define our future and how we want to live better or make our life count more.

How to live in the present and make your time count

How can you use a time capsule to give back to others with your life story?

None of us know how long or short we will live. So if you could write down everything you have been taught that has helped you each year of your life, how long do you think the list would be? As we grow up, we may not think about the lessons or moments in life that helped us get through the tough times. We may not think about all the specific praise we received or think to write down our exact feelings during a milestone moment in our lives. That is where we are here to help. I know if you are like my family, we grow up so fast and forget these lessons many times in our busy daily life.

Then like others I know, who have had children now, we try to recollect what our parents taught us to help us raise our own children now. Do you remember or know what your mother did to help you fall asleep as a baby? Do you know or remember what your parents did to stay away from peer pressure as a teenager? What other questions do you find yourself saying or thinking (what would my mentor, mom, dad, or friend have done in this same situation in the past)?

Write your resolutions on your own “Message to the Future” letter to include in a time capsule you make for yourself. You can open your time capsule at the end of 2015 or whenever you choose, to see if any of your resolutions were completed. Make your life count and leave tangible, heirloom items in the time capsule to pass on to your children, or other family members in the future when the time capsule is opened. What are things in life that God has entrusted to you that you can use to make your life count? Make sure to take pictures of your gifts and talents in action, so you can look at them years later and reminisce what life was like in 2015. Can you still do these same talents years later? Have you expanded the use of your gifts years later, when you open the time capsule? It is always humbling to see our beginning moments in learning things in life. It helps keep us grateful.

How to live in the present and make your time count

Time is such a precious thing. When our treasures start to diminish, fade away, we start to treat things with more respect. Our perspective in life, for memories, start to change. Keep an attitude of gratitude and that is when we are starting to make our life count. A time capsule helps us remain thankful, especially when we open the time capsule and reflect on what we have had in the past to help shape who we are.

Is your life of great value to you? Don’t hold it all to yourself. Give back and teach the children of the future by filling our a “Message to the Future” letter to put in a time capsule. Pay it forward and teach others what helped you make it through your school days, work life, child rearing, and empty next. Start today and get an “Any Occasion” DIY Time Capsule from What better way to start your New Year, than with a keepsake that counts.

What is one piece of advice you would put in your time capsule, for children of the future? Comment below.

Your Past, Your Present, Your Future (KJV)

13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,

14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

I. Forget the Sins of the Past.

II. Reach for the High Calling of God in the Present.

III. Press Toward the Future Prize.

I. Forget the Sins of the Past. (vs. 13)

Phil 3:13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind…

You can’t change the sins of the past.

The Bible says in Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Too many people today are living in the past. The Bible tells us in

2 Cor. 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

All things are become new. When you get saved you have a new desire. A desire to live for God. Many today come to the church and they want to add Jesus to their “lifestyle”. They want to be a Christian one or two hours a week at church and then live the life of sin all week. We are “new creatures” the bible says. We have a past life of sin. It is now time to forget the sin of the past and move forward for the cause of Christ.

II. Reach for the High Calling of God in the Present. (vs. 13,14)

13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: …reaching forth unto those things which are before,

14 …the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Today you can live for God. Jesus Christ came to save you from your sins. Paul says in 1Tim. 1: 12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; 13 Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. 14 And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. 15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. 16 Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting. 17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Paul was the chiefest of sinners in the past. He names his sin in verse 13. In verse 16 he now says he is a pattern for others. In verse 12 counted faithful.

God is not concerned with what you did before you accepted Him. He is concerned with how you are living for Him now that you’re a Christian. You can be a pattern for others coming to Christ. You can be a fisherman of souls today. You can be faithful to the cause of Christ. I am greatly concerned for those who call themselves “Christians” and yet their present life is always in shambles. Year after year they continue to live as though nothing is different in their life. Our goal presently in everything we do is to life a life that brings honour and glory to God. If you are in an unspiritual rut this morning get out of the rut and serve the Saviour. Don’t let another day go by. Don’t let another week go by. Don’t let another month go by. And for some, Don’t let another year go by without turning your life over to the Master and live for Him.

III. Press Toward the Future Prize. (vs. 14)

Phil 3:14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

The Future Prize doesn’t come from good works. The Future Prize comes from following Jesus Christ. Many look to themselves for the answer. We must look to Christ.

Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Jesus Christ endured the cross. What are you enduring for the cause of Christ today?

Jesus Christ despised the shame. Are you ashamed of him?

Jesus Christ is set down at the right hand of God the Father. Will you one day be in heaven too?

Make Your Life Count

-Live to the Glory of God-

The scripture passage in Ephesians 5:15-20 reminds me of the motto:

Will soon be past;

Only what’s done for Christ

Every day you are faced with decisions. What will you give your time and energy to? Sports, hobbies, gaining wealth, work? None of these bring lasting satisfaction. J.B. Phillips, a New Testament Scholar translates Ephesians 5:15 this way, “Live life then with a due sense of responsibility, not as amen who do not know the meaning and purpose of life but as those who do.”

God’s purpose for you is to make your life count not just for this brief life on earth but for eternity. A good life purpose would be to “Know God and to make Him known.” Jesus gave the great commandment: “Love the Lord god with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this, Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:30-31

We love God and make Him know by serving others. Service is the pathway to joy and fulfillment. If you aren’t involved in something greater than yourself, you are just putting in time because life is meant for ministry to others. God wants you to make a difference in the world. God wants to work through you.

The god of this world, Satan, will do all he can to keep you from fulfilling God’s purpose for your life. “Your struggle is not against people, it is against principalities and powers and darkness present in this world.” Ephesians 6:12

It’s interesting that the “Passion of Christ” has been seen by millions giving the New Testament story of the crucifixion, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Parallel to the true story of Christ’s life and death is the novel by Dan Brown, “Da Vinci Code. The Da-Vinci-Code gives the fictional story of Jesus that runs counter to the New Testament. Brown sows seeds of doubt on the New Testament account by saying that the New Testament story of the life of Christ was a great conspiracy and did not tell the truth.

Brown writes that Jesus was a mere mortal man who married Mary Magadalene and had children whose descendants now live in France. Jesus is not the divine Son of God. The book has sold over 6 million copies.

The same warning that the Apostle Paul gave young Timothy is needed today. 2 Timothy 3:1-5 “You should also know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control; they will be cruel and have no interest in what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act as if they are religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. You must stay away form people like that.”

J.B. Phillips in the introduction to his book, The Ring of Truth, tells of a retired clergyman who took his own life because he started listening to skeptics that finally drove him to take his own life because he concluded his own life’s work was founded upon a lie.

J.B. Phillips felt that it was time someone who had given his life studying the New Testament wrote a book giving the historicity and reliability of the New Testament. Ring of Truth is his testimony.

J.B. Phillips gives this paraphrase of Ephesians 5:15-20. Under the title – “You Know the Truth Let Your Life Show it.”

“Live life, then with a due sense of responsibility, not as men who do not know the meaning and purpose of life but as those who do. Make the best use of your time, despite all the difficulties of these days. Don’t be vague but firmly grasp what you know to be the will of God. Don’t get your stimulus from wine (for there is always the danger of excessive drinking), but let the Spirit stimulate your souls. Express your joy in singing among yourselves psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, making music in your hearts for the ears of God! Thank God at all times for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. And ‘fit in with’ each other, just because you all recognize that God is the Supreme Power over all.”

This passage tells how to make your life count.

Keri Peterson, MD, is board-certified in internal medicine and has her own private practice on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. She holds appointments at Lenox Hill Hospital and Mount Sinai Medical Center.

In general, a platelet count more than 450,000 cells per microliter is considered elevated; this is known as thrombocytosis. There are numerous causes of thrombocytosis and fortunately, the majority are benign and transient. Let’s review some of the most common causes.

Myleoproliferative Disorders

How to live in the present and make your time count

Chronic myleoproliferative disorders (disorders where the bone marrow makes too many blood cells) can cause thrombocytosis. These include polycythemia vera, essential thrombocythemia (ET), and primary myelofibrosis. In ET, for example, the bone marrow makes too many megakaryocytes, the cells that make platelets, resulting in thrombocytosis.

With these conditions, the excessive numbers of platelets cause the blood to be thick and flow more slowly which may result in blood clots. Treatment is aimed at reducing the platelet count to reduce this risk.

How to live in the present and make your time count

In both children and adults, infections are the most common cause of an elevated platelet count. This elevation can be extreme, with platelet counts greater than 1 million cells per microliter.

The majority of people who experience this are asymptomatic but a small group of patients with other risk factors may develop blood clots. Platelet counts generally return to normal after resolution of the infection, but this may take several weeks. In some patients, thrombocytosis may be a rebound effect after having thrombocytopenia (low platelets) during initial infection.

Iron Deficiency Anemia

” data-caption=”” data-expand=”300″ data-tracking-container=”true” />

Although a low hemoglobin and small red blood cells are the typical laboratory values associated with iron deficiency anemia, elevation of the platelet count is not uncommon. At this time, it is unknown what exactly causes this thrombocytosis. In general, it is well tolerated and resolves with appropriate iron supplementation treatment.

Not Having a Spleen

How to live in the present and make your time count

A certain amount of platelets are housed in your spleen at any given time. If the spleen is removed surgically (splenectomy) or stops functioning properly (functional asplenia) as in sickle cell disease, thrombocytosis results. This thrombocytosis is usually mild to moderate and well tolerated.

Immediately after splenectomy, thrombocytosis may be severe and may trigger the formation of a blood clot. This post-splenectomy complication occurs in about 5 percent of patients. In general, the risk is greatest in the month after splenectomy.

Inflammatory Conditions

” data-caption=”” data-expand=”300″ data-tracking-container=”true” />

JUAN GARTNER / Science Photo Library / Getty Images

Conditions with inflammation, like rheumatologic disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, and vasculitides, can have thrombocytosis. The elevated platelet count occurs in response to cytokines (small proteins released from cells that signal other cells to do something). In particular, the cytokines interleukin-6 and thrombopoietin stimulate platelet production.

Mixed Cryoglobulinemia

How to live in the present and make your time count

Mixed cryoglobulinemia can cause a false elevation in the platelet count. In this condition, cryoglobulins (proteins) in the blood stick together when exposed to cold temperatures (like the hands and feet).

These particles may be falsely counted as platelets by the machine performing the complete blood count. This condition is associated with hepatitis C infection, systemic lupus erythematosus, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Hemolytic Anemia

How to live in the present and make your time count

If hemolytic anemia (anemia secondary to red blood cell fragmentation) results in the formation of very small red blood cells, these red blood cells may be inaccurately counted as platelets by the machine that performs the complete blood count.

This can be diagnosed by reviewing a peripheral blood smear (a microscope slide of blood). A visual count of the platelets will be lower with many small red blood cells seen.

Thrombocytosis can be a secondary effect of some malignancies (cancer). This is known as paraneoplastic thrombocytosis. This is more common in solid tumors like lung cancer, hepatocellular (liver) carcinoma, ovarian cancer, and colorectal cancer. Elevated platelet count can also be seen in chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).

How to live in the present and make your time count

Living in the present moment is crucial to success, by being aware of the here and now you will live a better life.
