The world is full of opportunities, but sometimes too much thinking can get in the way. Changing your life for the better is about picking a destination and taking one step at a time to get there. If you try to take shortcuts, you may actually end up making your journey longer and more arduous. Getting serious about making improvements is a great start, and taking action is the next important step.

Here, then, are 10 tips to help you start improving your life:

  1. Be grateful for what you have. When you stop to remember what you have instead of worrying about what you may not be getting, it changes your perspective for the better.
  2. Start your day the night before. The most successful people I know end their workday by making a list of what they have to do the following day or two ahead. This allows the subconscious to work on things while you sleep.
  3. Be ready to grow up. Adults have the ability to learn to delay gratification, but we also have a choice as to how to behave when things don’t go our way. If you remember to take the high road, you’ll end up where you want to be.
  4. Drop the attitude. If you think the world owes you a living, you might want to reevaluate your position. It is quite possible that, by feeling entitled, you are pushing away things and people you might like.
  5. Don’t ignore your emotions, but remember that feelings aren’t facts. Emotions need to be honored—they don’t have to be justified—but just because you have a feeling doesn’t mean that you are right.
  6. Watch out for negative thinking. Sometimes we get into negative feedback loops and don’t even know it. If thoughts of being helpless and hopeless continue to enter your mind, you might just need to take a nap or perhaps talk with someone who can help.
  7. Set up and stick to a routine. We are creatures of habit; and good habits, such as getting regular exercise, make us feel better. Maintaining good habits also helps us feel that we have some control over our lives. Just do it.
  8. Drop your resentments. We all have them. Whether they are toward our parents, partners, or peers, resentments take up too much psychic space to allow us to function properly. By choosing to drop them, you will make your life much lighter. But the hardest part is making the decision to let your resentments go.
  9. Know who you really are, and learn to honor yourself. We all fake it from time to time and once in a while, this can be a good thing, but never compromise your personal values and always strive to be your best self.
  10. Enjoy a part of every day. Look for those little bright moments that happen all the time but that we often fail to recognize. Make a point of seeing some good in every day, and you will change your life.

Now my life hasn’t always been a happy one and I have had a difficult time in life for lots of different reasons but I have now chosen happiness as the number one way forward in my life and hopefully it will help you live a happier life too.

My top tips on the ways to live a happy life

  1. Fall in love with yourself again, make every effort to find out what makes you tick and puts a smile on your face.
  2. If you have a partner rekindle your flame with them if you need to and do the below for a perfect relationship at home
    1. Remember how you were when you first met
    2. Send each other little love texts through the day to say you are thinking about each other
    3. Buy each other small gifts that are personal but mean a lot
    4. Go out and have fun – take photographs together so you can remind yourselves of the smiles you give each other
    5. Kiss and cuddle as often as you can – it relieves stress and will bond you together
    6. Go to be early and spend time finding out more about the intimate parts of each other
    7. Plan things together, your future, where you are heading where you want to be
    8. Communicate with each other about everything and talk rather than argue – agree to disagree
    9. Love each other unconditionally
  3. By using all the above in your relationship you will either bring each together more or you will find out that the person you are with is not the right one for you. Sometimes in order to change your life and bring happiness you need another soul to share these things with
  4. Play with your kids and spend time listening and encouraging them to do well in life. Kids give so much back when you spend time with them
  5. Talk and smile at strangers – you never know who you will meet and what value they can bring into your life
  6. Spread kindness and love everywhere you go – happiness after all starts with finding small pieces of life that you will want more and more off
  7. Forgive others but never forget – you have to let go of feelings that others push upon you.
  8. Make small wishes everyday, they do come true if you use the law of attraction effectively in order to receive them
  9. Make a plan for your future, when you live day by day you lose out on all the excitement of planning amazing things for your life. You can have anything you want in life if you are willing to put the effort in to get them
  10. If you hate your job, then change it because you are at work everyday and it needs to be something you at least like not hate
  11. Spend money on yourself and make yourself look good. Appearance really does allow you to walk out the door with your head held high looking glam and gorgeus
  12. Don’t spend money that you don’t have otherwise you will always be on the back foot trying to pay it off. This isn’t a way to live a happy life at all
  13. Stop rushing around everywhere, does it really matter if you are late, does it really matter if all the jobs don’t get done. Don’t stress the mustard just enjoy everything you do
  14. Put music on and surround yourself with it so even the most boring of things keep you occupied and wiggling that booty
  15. Happiness is a choice and one that if you can look around you and feel the air, breathe its essence and see the beauty you will feel alive. Put a smile on your face too and boom you are halfway there already.

Now I know all the above sounds perfectly easy when you are stressed, anxious, tired and just fed up off life in general. But the choices are down to you, you either make a conscious decision to change your life for the better or you go down the rubbish shoot being unhappy for the rest of your life.

How to live your best life starting today

When we think about creating sweeping change in our lives, it often seems like a distant dream. When life gets in the way, it’s easy to think it’s “too late,” or that we won’t be able to restart because we are so set in our ways, whether it’s our career, finances, or exercise plan.

Instead of sticking to the same old routine, realize you can change your life in meaningful ways that will make you happier and more successful, starting today. If you want to, you can reinvent your life–that it’s possible has been scientifically proven, and plenty of entrepreneurs have done it before.

Here are a few habits that will create that change, and a few success stories to show you that anything really is possible.

Practice being your future self.

Quite simply, to become that ideal, future version of yourself, you need to practice being it.

According to Peter Bregman, CEO and leadership expert, in Harvard Business Review, “You need to spend time on the future even when there are more important things to do in the present and even when there is no immediate apparent return to your efforts.”

His brilliant advice applies to almost any change you want to make in your life. Whether you want to get in better shape or start a business, it’s not going to happen overnight. Instead of waiting for this change, start prioritizing and scheduling bite-size improvements today, no matter how busy you are.

Design your life around happiness.

Happiness can seem like such an abstract concept. After all, a Hallmark card or Dove chocolate wrapper doesn’t exactly give you a concrete way to create a happier life.

But according to Stanford’s famous “Designing Your Life” class, you can actually home in on what happiness means to you, and restructure your life around it. Instead of just abstractly chasing happiness, they suggest you journal it daily.

Start by writing down the specifics–when you were happy, what you were doing, why did it make you happy, etc.). If you notice reoccurring themes or patterns, start changing your goals or routines to incorporate them.

Don’t beat a dead horse.

“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” – Albert Einstein

If you have been trying to succeed at something for a while now and it hasn’t been working, or, even more important, it isn’t making you happy, it is time to try something else. It does not mean that you are a failure. It means that you are smart enough to realize when something isn’t working out and that you have enough dignity to do something to make yourself happy.

Take a vacation, or at least a 10-minute break from your screen.

If you can, take a vacation: Recharge, let loose, and revitalize your mind. Science says it’s the equivalent of hitting the reset button on your brain: It destroys stress and gives you a much-needed fresh perspective to create sweeping change.

If you can’t head to Costa Rica today, don’t worry–just take a break. A Cornell University study from 2009 shows that workers who followed automated reminders to take a break from their computer screens were 13 percent more accurate in their work after returning.

Researchers also suggest meditating in a quiet space or even taking a walk–preferably in the fresh air. Not only will your eyeballs appreciate it; your mind too will have a chance to recharge.

You’re only as good as the people around you.

You may recall, when you were in high school, your parents telling you not to hang out with wrong crowd, and it probably drove you crazy. I am sorry to tell you, though, that they were right.

A Harvard Medical School study done by Dr. Nicholas Christakis found that individuals who surround themselves with people who smile and have a positive attitude themselves have a better attitude compared with those who are surrounded by negative and grumpy people.

It might not seem like a big deal, but start avoiding negative friends or colleagues whenever possible. If you can’t avoid this, now’s the time to start looking for a new job or social circle. The results will amaze you.

Say no to everything else.

Warren Buffet reportedly said to his pilot of 25 years, “The fact that you’re still working here tells me I’m not doing my job.”

He then told his pilot to write down 25 goals he was working on, and to narrow down the top five. Buffett’s sage advice was to only follow those top five goals, and to say no to everything else.

You can do the same thing: Rather than overextending yourself, start tuning up your turn-down skills. For instance, if you want to start a business, learn to say no to frivolous activities that waste your time. When you start prioritizing yourself, positive change will arise in the blink of any eye.

Scare yourself every single day.

“Do one thing every day that scares you,” said Eleanor Roosevelt.

She was right on the money. Although it might be intimidating, stepping outside your comfort zone is the only way to create change.

Is there something that you’ve been putting off because it brings butterflies to your stomach? Is there a slight fear you have, but you know you’ll be more productive by moving toward it?

Whether it’s going to that job interview or just saying hello to someone you want to meet, make an effort to do it daily, knowing that it will be a step toward conquering your fears and success goals.

The bottom line.

It’s never too late (or too early) to create that massive change in life you’ve always wanted. Your new success might not happen overnight, but it will happen eventually.
