Many investors are excited about the fast-growing sector of automated delivery as the focus shifts from technology development to scaling and dealmaking. Many of these technological firms operate on an as-a-service basis, so partnering with companies with existing client bases and branding recognition is the most effective method to develop.
Serve Robotics creates, develops, and operates zero-emission rovers to provide services in public places, starting with food delivery. Following a seed financing round that began in 2017 and ended in 2020, Serve broke away from Postmates as an independent business in early 2021. Most recently, Serve announced its first deal with UberEats.

All of this is in line with the growing number of industry partnerships. Other self-driving delivery firms jostling for market share include Starship Technologies, which is extending its presence on college campuses, Nuro, which recently partnered with 7-Eleven, and Refraction AI, which completed a round of financing this year to name a few.

ALBANY — Momentum is building as a Dec. 31 deadline nears for municipal governments to outlaw pot dispensaries, consumption lounges or both, with an increasing number of cities, towns and villages recently enacting local ordinances barring the businesses.
Ten percent of New York’s cities, 28 percent of its towns and 19 percent of its villages had notified the Office of Cannabis Management as of Dec. 15 that they added one or both of the restrictions, according to the office. Dozens more passed laws prohibiting pot storefronts but had not informed the state by last week.
In some communities, clusters of local governments have barred cannabis businesses. Just north of New York City, a large swath of Orange County and adjacent areas have opted out, which could create a dead zone for cannabis retail within the Catskills and Hudson Valley.
In the Capital Region, localities rimming Albany and Saratoga Springs city limits have passed new cannabis laws as well, though several of those – including the town of Colonie – are only outlawing on-site consumption spaces, analogous to bars that serve alcohol.
But some municipal leaders have indicated they don’t have enough information to know how to vote before the state’s deadline, in part because the state’s regulations for adult-use cannabis have yet to be issued.
Republican state Sen. George Borrello said he has been fielding calls from town board members who have questions he can’t answer about the way the industry will look once it’s up-and-running. In September, Borrello introduced a bill that would have extended the opt-out deadline by one year; he said it gained bipartisan interest, but not enough to get it pushed through.

The cannabis office, which will oversee the state’s cannabis industry, has made clear that the opt-out deadline was in the hands of lawmakers, and that even after opting out, municipalities can opt back in at any time. The December cap “cannot be extended by regulation,” said Freeman Klopott, a spokesman for the cannabis office. But Borrello’s legislation would have amended the timeline.
“Last I heard, roughly a third of municipalities have opted out,” Borrello said. “The vast majority of them have not opted out because they’re against recreational marijuana, they’ve opted out because of the lack of information.”
Meanwhile, groups that have long mobilized against the legalization of marijuana – including the New York State Congress of Parents and Teachers – view local government as a final frontier where they might still have a chance to reduce the footprint of the industry.
The PTA’s executive director, Kyle Belokopitsky, said the group has recently been reaching out to their 300,000 or so members across the state seeking support.
“We have been asking them to contact their local legislators, their mayor, their supervisor, their town board members, their village board members,” Belokopitsky said. “We really feel that this is a child safety issue.”

Ways to Use Flash Cards for Sight Words
There is nothing wrong with using flash cards just how you imagine it should work – Holding them up and putting them back as you go, reviewing the ones missed. But there are other ways to use flashcards that you may have not thought of!
Sight Word Memory
After printing out a double set and cutting out all the cards, ay all the cards face down and take turns flipping the cards over, two at a time, trying to make pairs. Each time a pair is flipped, that player get to keep those cards. Player with the highest number of pairs at the end wins!
Have your child draw her own picture of the word on the back of each card. Then you can have her flip the card to see (her own) drawing and to confirm if she was correct.
Play Speed Flash Cards
When you use the flash cards, add in a timer. See if your child can beat his own speed to get so many correct! (Don’t do this if it brings your child stress!)
Flash Cards with Sidewalk Chalk
Write out the words on the sidewalk with chalk and then have your child run out and try to put the correct flashcard on the right spot. If that gets old, have your child be one to write out the words on the sidewalk and make you be the runner!
Every 5 or so correct words, take “silly breaks” or “wiggle breaks” where you turn the music on and dance, get the wiggles out, or run laps around the house. Taking it to another kinesthetic level will really help those active learners!

In 2021 alone, Ford launched a pilot program to test self-driving ride-hail in major cities across the U.S., and the North Carolina Department of Transportation launched autonomous shuttles to enhance efficiency and safety in mass transit.
Autonomous vehicle deployment is not just about the technology itself, but the ways we integrate it into our communities to enhance safety and revitalize how we move around. In 2022, we’ll continue to see innovators develop technologies and platforms that ensure AVs are a success when they’re finally on our roads and fully embedded within our transit systems.

As we prepare for these innovations to enter our communities, it is critical that city leaders and transportation companies ensure the right plans and investments are in place. Given the diverse, ever-changing needs of riders, deploying new transportation technology cannot be a one-size-fits-all approach. For a successful rollout of on-demand services, EVs, AVs, micromobility and more, simulation software is critical to accurately estimating costs, identifying commute patterns, predicting outcomes and optimizing services.
The pandemic emphasized the importance of demand-response capabilities, and simulation tools help transit operators stay nimble and prepared for any scenario. For example, infrastructure engineering company Bentley Systems recently acquired mobility visualization tools to enhance the use of digital twins for smarter transportation planning. This is the level of innovation needed to be successful with transit deployments in 2022 and beyond. Tech providers must ensure the data they provide is easily accessible and transparent, therefore allowing users to analyze transportation trends and effectively inform future roll-out strategies.
As we overcome Covid-19 challenges, innovative technologies will help rebuild our transportation systems and march us toward a more resilient, sustainable and equitable future. However, transit agencies and city leaders cannot do it alone.
