Dear Christian: I applaud your efforts to be prepared. All too often I speak with candidates who were blindsided by layoffs and had little or no documentation from their career. In addition to keeping records of your performance, every month or two, be sure you log accomplishments or special projects. Not only can this facilitate the resume development process, but it can also help tremendously when it comes to preparing for your annual review.

Speaking of reviews, if you can save a copy of them, that would be great too. Often reviews contain strong comments on your performance, comments that can be used directly on your resume. At the very least, keeping your reviews documents your efforts if you become a victim of a sticky situation at work. This could be a layoff or simply an unflattering supervisor, so hanging onto documents that record strong performance is important.

You should also build and maintain your LinkedIn profile. Be sure to turn off activity feeds on your LinkedIn settings — if you are performing a significant update — as you would not want anyone you are connected to with your current employer to know you are that active in updating your profile. By performing routine updates, you will continue to refresh your profile and be facilitating the opportunity for potential employers to find you. Carlos Alcaraz, 18, admitted that he could not believe once he was nominated for the Davis Cup Finals. Alcaraz has had an outstanding 2021 season and is set to end it with a Davis Cup debut. Alcaraz is one of the five players nominated for the Davis Cup Finals, as the captain of the Spanish team, Sergi Bruguera, also selected Roberto Bautista Agut, Pablo Carreño Busta, Feliciano López and Marcel Granollers.

"It means a lot to represent Spain in the Davis Cup for the first time, when the captain told me that he did not believe it. It was a dream I had since I was a child and being able to fulfill it when I was 18 years old is super nice and super special.

All my teammates are great professionals, like Sergi Bruguera. I look forward to learning from them in all areas," Alcaraz said. Alcaraz captured his first ATP title last summer at Umag and also won it all at the Next Gen ATP Finals.

"It has been a very, very good year for me, I have grown a lot this year, but it has been that, just one year. I did not expect at all to grow so fast, mature so fast and of course make the Davis Cup team so fast. I was surprised," admitted Alcaraz, Spain will face Russia and Ecuador in the group stage and will not have an easy job to win their group, as it will be without Rafael Nadal, while Russia will have Daniil Medvedev.

Nadal hopes to be competitive

Rafael Nadal said he hopes to be "competitive" when he does make his return. However, the Mallorcan admitted that the road to recovery was a "complicated process" given the duration of the injury layoff.

"My goal right now is to prepare myself in the best possible way in every way for when I am ready to arrive and be able to be competitive," Rafael Nadal said. "I know it's going to be a complicated process because it's many months but I'm with the utmost enthusiasm and that's what should lead me to have options next year," Nadal added.

Nadal believes 2021 has been a "good year" for women's tennis in Spain. He believes Muguruza's WTA Finals triumph has a "special meaning," since no other Spaniard has managed to pull off the feat.

"It has been a good year for (Spanish) women's tennis and with a good culmination winning the last tournament, which had not been achieved and has a special meaning," Rafael Nadal said.

If the Nebraska women’s basketball team wants to stay unbeaten and improve to 11-0 on the season, it’ll need to take care of business against a Missouri Valley Conference foe that has shown it can score as well as the Huskers.

The Drake Bulldogs (7-2) come to Lincoln for a noon tip on Sunday against Nebraska, which hasn’t played since last Saturday’s win over Indiana State. Husker head coach Amy Williams is well aware of Drake’s offense, which ranks 10th in the nation at 83.2 points per game. The Bulldogs started the season 1-2, but have since ripped off six consecutive wins.

One of those victories came against a common opponent with the Huskers: Creighton. Drake beat the Bluejays 82-79 in the regular-season opener thanks to a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from freshman guard Katie Dinnebier. That shot gave Drake’s first-year head coach, Allison Pohlman, her first win as a Bulldog.

Like Drake, Nebraska beat Creighton in a tough and gritty way. Williams said she’s watched the Drake-Creighton game a couple times in an effort to see if she could find any advantages against the Bulldogs.

“I think we can take that tight ball game that they played with Creighton and use that as a motivating factor because of the respect that we have for both of those teams,” Williams said.

The 3-point shot has been good to Drake this season. The Bulldogs are shooting 36.9% (87-of-236) from behind the arc, which ranks 29th in the country. Nebraska is a little better at 38.6% (85-of-220) for 13th. Drake has nine players who have made five or more 3s this season while Nebraska has eight.

“They have very balanced scoring. Every player on their roster can shoot it from the perimeter,” Williams said. “They’re really good in transition. I think they just have great balance and I think those are some of the challenges that we’re preparing for.”

With the Bulldogs excelling at scoring in transition, that may lead Williams to changing a few details of how the Huskers want to try defending them.

“I think there are some characteristics to some game plans that we’ve had up to this point that we’re going to have to have in place for the Drake game,” Williams said. “We’ve played a few teams who were really, really good in transition. I think Drake is the best high-low team that we’ve played so far, so that’s going to change a few things. We’re going to have to practice and be good in a few areas where we haven’t had to in our first 10 ball games of the year.

“But I do feel that there are some elements of our games that we’ve played that, if we can piece together, will help prepare us for this game Sunday.”

Drake has four players who are averaging double-figure scoring, including Maggie Blair (13.0), Megan Meyer (11.6), Grace Berg (11.0) and Dinnebier (10.8). Dinnebier, who is also a 45% (15-of-33) 3-point shooter, seems to be the top playmaker for Drake as she’s averaging a team-high 4.1 assists per game and has the most steals, 18, on the team.

Nebraska has defensive options to throw at Dinnebier, including Sam Haiby and Jaz Shelley. Haiby is a strong defender and veteran of the program in her fourth year in Lincoln. She has 13 steals this season, second-most on the team. Shelley, a transfer from Oregon, was recently named in Autumn Johnson’s top five lockdown defenders of the Big Ten:

The 5-foot-9 Shelley is leading the team in steals with 16 and hauling down 6.5 rebounds per game. Williams has seen Shelley, who is known for her scoring and quick-trigger 3-point shot that goes in at a 53% (31-of-58) clip, grow as a defender since she’s been in Lincoln. Much of that has to do with confidence.

“Her approach to the game, she’s very cerebral, so she’s able to lock into defensive game plans and stay tuned in to that,” Williams said of her sharpshooter-turned-defensive-menace. “So that’s been a positive for us, and I think that’s one of the reasons why she’s been able to get deflections and do the things we need her to do.”

One of the goals that Nebraska wants to accomplish against Drake is clamping down defensively in the post. Early on in the season when the competition wasn’t up to the Huskers’ level, they were dominating, Williams said. But recently, the post defense hasn’t been as strong.

“We haven’t done as good a job of keeping the basketball out of the paint and allowing people to score points there,” Williams said, “so that’s one area that we feel like we really can amp things up a little.”

Look for Husker post players like Bella Cravens, Isabelle Bourne and Alexis Markowski to hunker down defensively and be a presence in the paint.

“It’s our ability to take pride in guarding your yard. Winning the bouts. Not getting beat off the dribble,” Williams said. “But also understanding that, if we’re doing all that work on the perimeter, and we’re just letting them flash right into the paint and catch it wherever they want to, those two things kind of go hand in hand.”

Following Drake, Nebraska will have one more non-conference game before Big Ten play starts. The Huskers will host Wyoming on Wednesday at noon.

An unexpected postponement against their biggest rival gave the New York Rangers some extra time to prepare for another struggling foe.

After a four-day layoff, the Rangers return to the ice Wednesday night when they host the Philadelphia Flyers, who are looking to halt a six-game losing streak.The Rangers were scheduled to host the New York Islanders on Sunday, but for the second time this season New York saw a game postponed due to a COVID-19 outbreak on an opposing team. The other instance was Nov. 20 against the Ottawa Senators, and the Islanders were playing without seven players because of COVID-19 protocols before the game was postponed.

The Rangers are playing for the first time since rallying for a 5-2 win over the Boston Bruins on Friday afternoon. That followed up a 4-1 win in their debut at the Islanders’ new arena in Elmont, N.Y., two nights earlier.

After unexpectedly getting more time in between games, the Rangers are looking to follow up some aspects of their latest win. New York earned the win despite getting outshot 17-5 in the first period. They scored three goals in the third period, as Artemi Panarin and Ryan Strome each collected a goal and an assist.

Those wins are part of New York’s three-game winning streak and 7-1-0 run in their past eight contests.

“I think we want to continue the momentum we have right now and put together a lot of wins,” New York defenseman Adam Fox said after a recent practice. “We know we’re in a pretty tough division, so I wouldn’t say you’re ever secure. I think every point matters.”

The Flyers are 0-4-2 since a 2-1 overtime win on home ice over Calgary on Nov. 16. In the four regulation losses, Philadelphia has been outscored by a 20-7 margin. The losing streak is also part of a 2-6-2 skid over its past 10 games since a 2-1 win at Washington on Nov. 6.

It also prompted general manager Chuck Fletcher to hold a state-of-the-team press conference at Tuesday’s practice.

“I saw enough in the first 10 games to believe that we can be a good team in a tough division,” Fletcher said Tuesday. “To me, this is a massive week to get our house in order.”

Philadelphia also was supposed to play the Islanders on Tuesday, but its home game against them was postponed. That gives the Flyers extra time to focus on improving things after allowing three third-period goals in a 5-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils on Sunday.

The Flyers allowed 35 shots on goal, marking the 12th straight time they allowed at least 30 shots. Philadelphia also was 0-for-3 on the power play and is 2-for-33 on the man advantage in the past 10 games.

“You’ve got to stick together,” Scott Laughton said after the Flyers did not score more than three goals for the 15th straight contest. “It’s better this happens in November than late in the year. We’re still in it. We’ve lost six in a row, but we’re still in it. You’ve got to stay positive.”

The Flyers are hopeful former New York center Kevin Hayes can return to the lineup. Hayes has missed the past six games due to an undisclosed injury, has played in two games this season but practiced Tuesday.

Clients grappling with a layoff or jumping into retirement may have some tax-planning opportunities as the year winds down, top advisors say.

By the third quarter of 2020, 28.6 million baby boomers reported being out of the workforce, out of an entire cohort numbering 71.8 million, according to Pew Research. That's 3.2 million more exits than during the same period in 2019.

Whether someone leaves the workforce for good or plans to return for the right opportunity, their income and tax bracket may be significantly lower in 2022 compared with 2021, affecting year-end decisions.

"When managing someone's money, it's very, very important to understand their tax situation," said Dale Brown, chairman of the board at Salem Investment Counselors in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, which ranked second on CNBC's 2021 FA 100 list.

Deferring income into 2022

Someone leaving the workforce through retirement or a layoff in 2021 may seek ways to push 2021 income into 2022.

For example, if someone between jobs needs to tap appreciated portfolio assets to cover living expenses, they may wait until January 2022 to sell investments, bumping capital gains into the lower-income year, Brown suggests.

And if a married couple's taxable income is $83,350 or less for 2022, they may pay 0% long-term capital gains on those profits, he said.

"Whether you're retiring or laid off, it's almost universally true that you want to defer income from a higher-tax year into a lower-tax year," said Brown.

Other moves may be waiting until 2022 for retirement plan withdrawals, delaying year-end bonuses or postponing business income until January.

Accelerate deductions into 2021

If someone itemizes tax deductions, they may also explore ways to accelerate write-offs into 2021, Brown said, with charitable gifts typically offering the most flexibility.

For example, married investors may give multiple years of donations in 2021, a tactic known as "bunching," to exceed the $25,100 standard deduction. The move covers multiple years of charitable gifts with a tax break for 2021.

One of Alex’s worthy accomplishments occurred in the summer of 2007. Without warning, one of our major Asian suppliers unexpectedly raised their prices 10%. This negatively impacted our profitability since we were already operating on razor thin profit margins. Alex successfully held our supplier’s feet to the fire for the balance of our 12 month agreement. He then found a replacement supplier who agreed to a price of only 3% over our existing price.

But 10 different players hit a 3 in one of their games this year,” Williams said Friday as she met with the media ahead of the Huskers’ home game with Drake on Sunday. “They have very balanced scoring, every player on their roster can shoot it from the perimeter. They’re really good in transition. They have great balance. I think those are some of the challenges that we’re preparing for.”

The game Williams is talking about is Drake’s 83-66 win over Idaho, where 10 different Bulldogs cashed in at least one 3 in the game.

Drake comes to Lincoln with a 7-2 record and is riding a six-game winning streak. There could be quite a few points scored on Sunday. The Bulldogs’ offense is scoring 83.2 points per game, which is 10th in the country. Nebraska’s offense is 7th in the nation, averaging 84.1 points.

Williams said that Drake, along with San Diego and Creighton, teams Nebraska played early in the season in November, will be one of the deeper opponents the undefeated Huskers have played this season. The Bulldogs boast four players who are averaging double-digit scoring. Nebraska has two, with Jaz Shelley (15.2) and Isabelle Bourne (10.7).

“Both of those teams (San Diego and Creighton) also played 10 kids double-figure minutes and really had some dangerous weapons coming in off the bench, and anybody can go for 20,” Williams said. “But that all balances out to multiple people scoring a double-figures average. So I think we’ve played a few teams similar to that, but Drake, I think their balanced attack, their depth is most definitely something that makes them good and dangerous and successful.”

Tip for the game between Nebraska and Drake is slated for noon. Later in the afternoon, at 5 p.m., the Husker men’s team hosts Kansas State.

Despite Shelley’s 5-foot-9 height, the Moe, Australia, native also has the most steals (16) and blocks (15) on the team while averaging 6.5 rebounds, which is second on the squad.

Williams said Shelley is playing with confidence. And confidence, among other things on and off the court, helps a player become an elite defender.

“Her approach to the game, she’s very cerebral, so she’s able to lock into defensive game plans and stay tuned in to that,” Williams said of her sharpshooter-turned-defensive-menace. “So that’s been a positive for us, and I think that’s one of the reasons why she’s been able to get deflections and do the things we need her to do.”

>> It will be eight days between games for the Huskers. Williams said the long layoff was a good thing for the team as it gave the players a chance to work on themselves a bit, rather than prepare for an opponent.

“We had a day where we really just went individually one-on-one with our players, or a couple coaches and one player, and just really spent some time in the gym working on skills that we felt like that particular individual could benefit the most from,” Williams said. “Then, kind of as a whole, we really spent a lot of time talking about how we could take the next step forward defensively.”
