How to print photos from your iphone

Since the publication of this post, Apple has delivered its latest models, the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and the iPhone 11 Pro Max. So how do these compare when it comes to print sizes? Let’s take a look!

All three models include rear 12MP cameras. iPhone 11 offers two rear cameras (an ultra wide angle and a wide 26mm.) The iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max offer these same rear lenses, plus a third lens that’s an equivalent to a 52mm lens on a full-frame camera.

While the big difference between these models is the third rear camera, the 12MP sensor isn’t much of an upgrade from the previous iPhone X series, 8, 7 series, and 6 series.

This means you’ll be able to print a photo that’s at least 14.29 x 9.49 inches at 200 ppi . At best quality , you’ll get a print up to 21.44 x 14.24 inches at 200ppi. Probably not good enough for a photo exhibition but suitable for at home prints and small wall displays.

Are iPhone photos good enough quality to print?

The answer might surprise you…

Now that a large majority of the population have smartphones in their pockets, people have ditched the traditional camera and instead are shooting photos through the camera their phone possesses. With this new evolution of photography, comes the question are iPhone photos good enough quality to print?

My friends ask me all the time how large they can print their iPhone photos.

I even have people asking me if I can print my iPhone landscape shots for them on a canvas.

I have to be honest before I did research for this post, I honestly didn’t really know the answer.

Just like you, I mostly use my iPhone photos online.

Of course, like most people, I printed 4×6 prints for family at Christmas and other events, but the question of how large can you realistically print the photos before you start losing quality remained.

I decided to dig in, do some research, and create this resource for myself and my fellow photographers to grab when they want to print photos of their iPhones.

Resolution and Pixels Per Inch

Unless you understand resolution and pixels, the chart is going to just seem like a bunch of numbers. In order to fully understand what the chart is saying, you need to understand how pixels and resolution affect the quality of an image.

When it comes to resolution in a photograph, we talk about pixels.

Specifically, how many pixels per inch are in the photograph. Pixels are the tiny dots of information and color that make up the photograph.

The more pixels per inch you have in your photograph, the higher the resolution the photograph will be. When talking about resolution, we are referencing how focus sharp the image is.

So how do pixels and resolution affect the quality of your photo?

The higher the pixels you have means the higher the resolution of a photograph you have right?

Well, the higher the resolution your photo is, the larger the photo can be printed. When you have a higher resolution, your photo can be printed larger without the image looking soft and pixelated. When it comes to printing photos, the higher pixels per inch you have, the better.

iPhones and Photo Resolution

As time has progressed, so has the iPhone and its camera. Older iPhones have cameras with a lower amount of megapixels while new iPhones have cameras with a larger amount of megapixels.

The larger the megapixels your phone camera has, the larger number of pixels per inch your photograph will have. So, the newer the iPhone, the larger amount of pixels per inch, and the higher resolution of your photo.

Now that we have gone over pixels, resolution, and iPhone cameras, lets’ go over the sizes of photos you can print from your iPhone.

Recommended iPhone Photo Print Sizes and Resolutions

HOW TO USE THE CHART:

The qualities of the photographs are broken down into 3 types, Good, Better, and Best. For instance, if you are shooting an iPhone 10, the largest recommended size you can print for “Better Quality” is at a 21.44” x 14.24”.

This means you could print a full resolution iPhone photo at a typical 8″ x 10″ or 11″x 14″ (and probably larger) with no problems. Check out the chart below for more specific sizes and resolutions.

How to print photos from your iphone

The later models like the iPhone X series, 8, 7 series, and 6s Plus, and 6s come with 12 MP cameras. That’s why these models offer better resolution when it comes to printing photos.

At good quality with a 12 MP camera, your photos can be printed close to 30×19 inches, at better quality, you’ll get a quality print at 21×14 inches, with the best quality giving you a print size of 14×9 inches.

Note: these numbers and recommendations are based on full quality iPhone photos that have not been reduced in size.

It is important to remember that if you shoot at a lower quality or edit in a third party app like Instagram, it may not be saving the full resolution image and therefore the sizes above are not relevant.

The same goes for if you crop the original photo. Cropping the photo down reduces the size and resolution of the original image.

App Recommendation:

For taking photos I suggest you shoot with Camera+ (in this app you are able to control aperture, ISO, and shutter speed too) at full resolution or the native Camera App.

For editing I recommend Adobe Lightroom CC or editing in 3rd party apps like Snapseed or VSCOcam.

Do you have a mirrorless or DSLR camera?

Taking photos with an iPhone is one of the favorite things to do in daily life, especially when you are traveling, attending families or friends parties or just walking on the street. However, sometimes, if you just want printed photos that you can hold in hand or carry anywhere, what to do next?

If you have an AirPrint-enabled printer, you can print photos from your iPhone via AirPrint with ease. If you have no portable printer for iPhone by yourself, doesn’t matter, here we also collect other solutions that may help you fix it.

Part 1. How to Print Photos from iPhone Directly via AirPrint

Some AirPrint compatible printers allow you to print photos, text messages, notes and more from your iPhone or iPad running iOS 4.2 or higher. So if you have AirPrint compatible printers of your own or nearby, Printing photos from iPhone is fairly easy. What you should do is follow these steps below to print the wished photos from your iPhone in a simple way.

  1. Open Photos app on your iPhone
  2. Tap on a photo you want to print
  3. Tap the Share button at the bottom-left corner of the iPhone screen
  4. Tap Print (The iPhone will automatically detect and list nearby AirPrint-enabled printers, so you can select and print to them.)

Part 2. Print Photos from iPhone via a Printed-enabled App

If you have no AirPrint-enabled printers available abound you, you can also use an app that enables you to upload your photos to a nearby store with a photo-printing service, allowing you to pick them up. The Walgreens app offers the feature that you print photos from your iPhone and pick them up on the same day.

Download Walgreens on the computer > Transfer Photos from your iPhone to the computer > Upload photos on the computer to Walgreens Photo Center > Select the size of the photo you want to print (Order professionally-developed wallet-sized, 4×6″, 5×7″, 8×10″, or poster prints of any photo in your account, on Real Photographic Paper in a glossy finish.) > Pick these photos up at a Walgreens store near you an hour later, or have them shipped straight.

The 2 methods above can make sense at times if you have the AirPrint-enabled printers or Walgreens. However, we have neither of them in most cases. At this time, you can import photos from your iPhone to computer and then print photos you want exactly on your computer.

Part 3. How to Print Photos from iPhone through a Computer

The former 2 methods can print photos from your iPhone but not everyone has the AirPrint-enabled printers or Walgreens app. So here we offer a common method – printing iPhone photos through a computer. First, you should do is to transfer pictures from the iPhone to your computer, and then select photos to print by the printer which is connected to your computer.

However, one thing is, importing photos from your iPhone to the computer via iPhoto/Photos possibly results in photos loss and have no way to recover. Therefore, you need a reliable & safe method to do this. Here it is recommended you just try AnyTrans to copy photos from your iPhone to computer without data loss.

Step 1. Download AnyTrans on your computer > Run AnyTrans > Connect your iPhone to the computer > Click Photos > Select photos you want > Click To PC icon.

The Bottom Line

Although we list 3 methods to print photos from your iPhone in this guide, Part 3 is recommended for its low-cost and practicality. If you are planning to buy your own photo-printer, give it some thought first. The cost of a printer, photo paper, and ink can be significant. If you want to try Walgreens to print your iPhone photos, you need to take ages to figure out how to download and use it and find the Walgreen store nearby. Put simply, using a computer to print photos from your iPhone is the best way to go.

How to add a printer to your iPhone

Whether you use AirPrint or another app to print from your iPhone, the first step is the same. You need to add the printer to your iPhone. All you have to do to add your printer to your iPhone is to make sure they are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. To find out which Wi-Fi network your phone is connected to, tap Settings > Wi-Fi. You’ll see a check mark next to the network to which you are currently connected.

How do I set up AirPrint on my printer?

AirPrint is by far the easiest way to print from an iPhone or other iOS devices. In most cases, all you have to do to set up AirPrint on your printer is to ensure that it is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your iPhone. Sometimes you have to enable AirPrint functionality on your printer. You should check your manual for instructions on how to do this with your printer model.

Not sure you even have an AirPrint enabled printer? Apple maintains a list of all printer models that support AirPrint.

How to print pictures from iPhone using AirPrint

Once your printer and iPhone are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, printing with AirPrint is simple. Follow these instructions:

  1. Open the photo or document that you want to print on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the share icon, which looks like an up arrow in a box at the bottom left of your screen.
  3. Scroll through the options at the bottom of the screen and tap Print.
  4. Tap Select Printer and choose the printer you want to use.
  5. Choose how many copies you want to print, whether you want black and white or color, and what size paper you are using.
  6. Tap Print.

How to print from iPhone without AirPrint

Even if the printer you are trying to use isn’t AirPrint enabled, you can still print from your iPhone using your printer’s app. You’ll still need to ensure that your iPhone and the printer are using the same Wi-Fi network. All printer apps work a little bit differently, but the basic instructions are the same.

  1. Download the app associated with the make of your printer.
  2. Open the app. In most cases, it will immediately begin searching for printers on the network. If it doesn’t, you can add your printer in Settings.
  3. Allow the printer app to access your photos and choose the ones you want to print.
  4. Change the print settings if necessary and tap Print.

Can I print from my iPhone using a USB cable?

You cannot print directly from your iPhone using a USB cable. iOS devices, including iPhones, are designed to print wirelessly using AirPrint. If you do not have access to Wi-Fi, or if you don’t have a Wi-Fi-compatible printer, the only workaround is to connect your iPhone to a computer, download your photos, and use a USB cable to print the photos from your computer.

How to print from iPhone using a mini-printer

Mini-printers are tiny, portable printers that work via a wireless or Bluetooth connection, allowing you to print photos from just about anywhere. The smallest ones fit right in your pocket, so they’re perfect for on-the-go productivity or just for fun. (Mini-printers usually don’t rely on traditional ink cartridges, so you never have to worry about ink leaking onto your clothes.) Mini-printers are battery-powered and easy to use. The only downside to most mini-printers is that the photo quality isn’t as high as traditional printers.

Mini-printers connect to your iPhone via Bluetooth technology, Wi-Fi, or with AirPrint, depending on the model you purchase. The majority of them work with Bluetooth and require that you install the printer app as an interface to initiate printing.

Printing from iPhone: Issues and fixes

Are you having trouble printing from your iPhone and wondering what to do next? The vast majority of problems can be solved by reading the troubleshooting guide in your printer’s manual. Before you start rummaging in your desk for the manual, we have a few tips for you to try.

Why is my iPhone not connecting to my printer?

The most obvious reason that your iPhone isn’t connecting to your printer is that they are connected to different Wi-Fi networks. Check the settings on your printer and your iPhone to ensure that they are on the same network before continuing.

If that doesn’t seem to be the issue, follow these steps:

  1. Turn off your Wi-Fi router, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on.
  2. Power down your printer, wait 10 seconds, and then turn it back on.
  3. Update both your printer and your router with the latest firmware and drivers from the manufacturer.
  4. Finally, update the software on your iPhone and try again.

Why is AirPrint not working?

If you are certain that your printer is AirPrint compatible, but it isn’t working, the most obvious solution is to make sure that they are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Still no connection? Try these steps:

  1. Make sure your phone is not in Airplane mode.
  2. Switch off your Wi-Fi on your phone and then switch it back on.
  3. Make sure you are not on a public network. AirPrint requires security protection to work.
  4. If you still aren’t getting anywhere, contact Apple Support.

How do I get my iPhone to recognize my printer?

To use AirPrint, you need an iPhone 3GS or later and an AirPrint-enabled printer. If your printer does not support AirPrint, your phone won’t recognize it when you try to print. If you are certain that your printer supports AirPrint, then check your printer’s settings to make sure that AirPrint is enabled.

If you are trying to print with a printer that doesn’t support AirPrint, try deleting and reinstalling your printer’s app on your iPhone. If the problem persists, contact Apple Support or the support website for your printer.

With AirPrint, you can print photos directly from your iPhone to most wireless printers. If you have never tried printing from your phone, give it a try. You’ll be surprised at how easy it is.

iPads are great productivity tools that offer everything from word processing to spreadsheet creation. The files that you create can always be sent by email or social media platforms, however, you may sometimes need to have them printed.

Thankfully, Apple offers a proprietary printing method for both the iPhone and iPad, but there are also alternatives to choose from. We’ll break everything down below.

How to use Apple AirPrint

How to print photos from your iphone

AirPrint does not need to be installed in order to work. It is a feature that’s built into all modern iPhones and iPads. However, manufacturers must also integrate the technology into their printer models.

This having been said, the AirPrint feature allows you to print photos, documents, web pages, and other types of content. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Connect the iPhone or iPad and the printer to the same WiFi network
  2. Navigate to the document or photo that you want to print
  3. Tap the Share button that’s located at the top or the bottom of the screen
  4. Tap Print and select your printer from the list that will be displayed

The main alternatives for AirPrint

AirPrint is integrated into iPhones and iPads, however, not all printers are compatible with the technology. Luckily, there are several alternatives that you can install on your devices and work just as well as Apple’s printing feature.

Printopia works great and is still supported by the developer. To use it, you will have to download the Printopia software and install it on your Mac. This will allow you to use your computer or laptop as an intermediary for printing files from your iPad. The printer itself will only need to be connected to the macOS machine that you use as a middle-man.

When you decide to print a document, it will be transferred to your computer, and then sent to the printer. It goes without saying that the machine needs to be powered on for the system to work. However, the main advantage here is that you do not need to worry about connecting new printers to all your devices. Once you set them up on your laptop or computer, you can use them with all your iPhones and iPads.

Other alternatives include proprietary apps released and maintained by printer manufacturers. HP and Canon products come with apps that can be installed directly on iPhones or iPads and make printing easy.

These proprietary apps are usually offered for free and are compatible with all iOS devices. However, keep in mind that not all HP and Cannon printers will work with these apps. They are specifically designed for products that support WiFi connectivity or other forms of wireless communication, such as Bluetooth.

How to print photos from your iphone

Some sites and services recommend that you don’t print iPhone larger than 16″ x 24″, but really this depends on viewing distance. If you print an iPhone photo at 100dpi (30×40 inches) and look at it from 3 feet, the resolution looks as good as a 16″ x 24″ print at close quarters.

How big can I print a selfie?

The front-facing “selfie” camera on an iPhone is a bit lower resolution than the back camera. The maximum size we can print a selfie taken on an iPhone 6s or later is 16″ x 24″. How to print photos from your iphone

If you want to print on your iPhone or iPad, it can be easier than you might think. The simplest way to print from an iPhone is by adding a printer with AirPrint, so you can print directly with a wireless connection.

You can also print wirelessly without AirPrint by downloading your printer’s app on an iPhone or iPad, or by connecting your devices with a USB cable and adapter. Here’s how to do it all.

How to print from an iPhone or iPad with AirPrint

Most current printers with wireless capabilities have the AirPrint feature, which allows the printer to easily sync up with an iPhone or iPad and print directly.

Quick tip: You can check this list of AirPrint-compatible printers to see if your printer has AirPrint. The list is very long, but if you hit control + F and type in the name of your printer, you can quickly check.

To add a printer to your iPhone or iPad with AirPrint and use it to print:

1. Open the document, image, or webpage you wish to print. This can be located in your email, web browser, Photos app, Files app, or elsewhere.

2. Locate and hit the “Share” button, which is the square with an arrow aiming upward out of its center. If you don’t see this button, depending on the app you’re using, you may need to select the icon of three horizontal dots or the icon of an arrow pointing to the left.

3. In the pop-up, scroll down until you see an icon of a printer next to the word “Print.”

4. Tap “Print,” and on the next screen, tap “Select Printer” at the top. Find and select the name of the nearby printer you wish to use.

5. Hit the word “Print” written in blue in the top-right corner of the screen.

The AirPrint enabled printer will now be added to your list of preferred devices and will come up as an option for printing whenever in range. You can add another printer to your iPhone at any time by following the same steps with a new printer.

How to print from an iPhone or iPad without AirPrint

Not all printers have the AirPrint feature, especially if they are a bit older. But if they have a wireless capability, you should still be able to print from it wirelessly — you’ll just have to download your printer’s app on the App Store.

Quick tip: If you have an HP printer, download the HP Smart app on your iPhone or iPad. Or, for Canon printers, download the Canon PRINT InkJet app.

To set up a printer on your iPhone or iPad without AirPrint and use it to print:

1. Open your printer’s app on your device.

2. Turn on your printer’s Wi-Fi.

3. Go into your phone or tablet’s “Settings” and hit the Wi-Fi tab.

4. Locate your printer under “OTHER NETWORKS” and tap on it.

5. Pull up the document, image, or webpage you want to print, then hit the “Share” icon.

6. You should now be able to connect the printer through the app and print.

How to print from an iPhone or iPad with a USB cable

To print from an iPhone or iPad with a printer that can’t connect wirelessly, you’ll have to use a piece of hardware as the go-between. You’ll need a USB cable and a USB OTG (on-the-go) adapter that connects your iPhone to the USB cable.

To print from an iPhone or iPad with a USB cable:

1. Turn on your printer and connect one end of the USB cord to your printer and the other end to the USB OTG cord. Plug the other end of the USB OTG cord into your iPhone or iPad.

2. A pop-up should appear on your iPhone or iPad — tap “OK.”

3. Then, on your iPhone or iPad, go to the document you wish to print and tap the Share button.

4. In the Share menu, select the “Print” option.

5. The connected printer should appear next to “Printer” on the Printer Options page.
