Roku is one of the most popular streaming services/devices and it’s usually quite reliable. But like any other streaming gadget, your Roku may report errors and become buggy. Network connection issues are among the most common problems, and we’ll explore different ways to deal with them.

How to reset your roku’s network connection

To make things clear right off the bat – the Roku doesn’t offer a “Forget This Network” feature like the one on your smartphone. However, you can easily disable, reset, or restart the network and have your device up and running in no time.

Resetting Roku Network

If you want to switch to a new network or update network settings (like password, for example), it’s pretty easy to do it on the Roku. You can also take the following steps to troubleshoot your existing network.

Step 1

Make sure your TV is on and set to the input that’s connected to your Roku. Then, grab the Roku remote and hit the Home button to access the main menu.

Step 2

Navigate down to Settings, press OK to enter, and choose Network from the following menu.

How to reset your roku’s network connection

Step 3

Select “Repeat Guided Setup,” then choose Wireless (if you are connecting to Wi-Fi). Provide your WPA password and WEP key to gain access and confirm by clicking on “Done.” Now, you can go back to the main menu and your Roku should be connected.

Disabling Wi-Fi Direct

You might not know it, but your Roku creates a Wi-Fi network so you can connect different remotes to the device. The Roku Wi-Fi is on the same channel as your home network.

Of course, they can work on the same channel, but sometimes there are interferences. Plus, additional Wi-Fi networks mean there are more security risks. This is why you might consider disabling Wi-Fi Direct.

Step 1

Again, access the main window by pressing the Home button. Navigate to Settings and, this time, select System instead of Network.

Step 2

Choose “Advanced System Settings” to reach more actions and select “Device Connect.” Here, you click on “Disable Device Connect” and you are good to go.

Those who are using network monitoring apps shouldn’t see Wi-Fi Direct as one of the listed networks. In addition, after you take the steps above, the network shouldn’t appear as hidden.

Note: This has been tested on Roku 2 that runs an older software version.

The Remote Trick

If your Roku has trouble connecting to Wi-Fi, there is a neat remote trick that may help you. To be exact, pressing a precise key sequence on the remote brings up the “Platform Secret Screen.” There you can disable network pings and get your connection back. Here’s how it all works.

Step 1

By now, it’s not hard to guess that it all starts from the Roku Home screen. This is the sequence of buttons you need to press on the remote.

How to reset your roku’s network connection

Home x 5 > Fast Forward x 1 > Play x 1 > Rewind x 1 > Play x 1 > Fast Forward x 1

Step 2

Once inside the “Platform Secret Screen,” navigate up to “System Operations Menu” and press OK to enter.

How to reset your roku’s network connection

Go up in the pop-up window and choose “Disable network pings.” When you press the OK button, the option turns to “Enable network pings” and your problem will be solved.

System Restart

Disabling network pings does the trick on its own, but it’s advisable to perform a system restart just to be on the safe side. These are the necessary steps.

Step 1

Go back to the Home screen, select Settings, and navigate down to the System menu.

How to reset your roku’s network connection

Step 2

Under System, go down and choose “System restart” and confirm by selecting Restart on the right. Soon enough, the bouncing Roku letters will appear and the device will restart. Now, you can inspect if you are able to connect.

Network Error Messages

If there is a problem with a connection, there are two messages that might show up. Each one occurs at a different point and may hint at a different problem. So it pays to take a closer look at both error messages.

“Not connected to the Internet”

This message pops up when you lose connection while trying to launch a streaming service. It is linked to the “Error code 016” and could be resolved by selecting “Set up connection” in the pop-up window. There is a simple-to-follow on-screen wizard that allows you to get the connection back.

How to reset your roku’s network connection

Should the problem persist after resetting the network, you need to inspect the speed and signal strength. If they are too low, this message might reappear.

“Unable to connect to wireless network”

The network issues that occur during the setup process usually result in the “Unable to connect to wireless network” message. The error code for this one is 014.41 and it indicates your router and Roku device cannot communicate.

How to reset your roku’s network connection

The best way to deal with this problem is to restart your router and Roku device, and then try to re-establish the connection. While you’re at it, it doesn’t hurt to check the network speed and make sure you are trying to connect to the proper network.

Have Smooth Streaming

Traversing Roku menus might be tedious, but it’s not something you cannot do even if you are not tech-savvy. There is still no “Forget Network” option, so the methods described in this article are the next best thing to put your Roku in order.

Tell us, how often do you experience network problems on Roku? Does it ever happen in the middle of a stream? How do you resolve these issues? Share your experiences and tips in the comments below.

There are a number of reasons why you may want to delete, or make your Roku forget, a Wi-Fi network. That being said, there are also plenty of reasons why this isn’t one of those things you should be stressing out about.

How to reset your roku’s network connection

Roku manages wireless networks in a very safe way for the average user. And, whether you’re using a Roku smart TV or a Roku streaming stick, the connection options are always the same.

Can Roku Forget a Wi-Fi Network?

Whenever you remove and plug in your Roku streaming stick, it will automatically reconnect to the previously used Wi-Fi network. But if powering it off can’t make it forget, is there an alternative option? Yes, but it’s more a method of last resort.

How to reset your roku’s network connection

You see, a Roku device can detect all nearby Wi-Fi networks, or at least the ones that are in its range. This means that just like your smartphone, to some extent, your Roku device can pick up a signal from your router, your neighbors’ router, and so on.

You can’t actively erase wireless networks from that list. But, it’s not like Roku is remembering them in a favorites list. If you leave your home and plug your Roku device into someone else’s TV, the player will detect other Wi-Fi networks within its range.

A Method of Last Resort

Because Roku doesn’t have an option that will let you clear the cache, there aren’t really other ways to delete your personal preferences and account information to start with a clean slate other than performing a factory reset.

How to reset your roku’s network connection

The good news is that performing a factory reset is a lot easier than you think.

  1. Check the back or bottom of your Roku streaming stick.
  2. Press and hold down the button for 20 seconds or longer.
  3. Wait until the device starts flashing and then let go.
  4. If there’s no tactile button, check for a pinhole.
  5. Get a paperclip, pry one end loose, and use that to press the button.

Regardless of what type of button you find, you’ll always have to wait for a minimum of 20 seconds for the device to hard reset itself. Once that happens and you reboot your TV, you’ll have to reconfigure your Roku device all over again.

This means adding account credentials again, establishing a new network connection, and so on.

Wi-Fi Networks That Aren’t Recorded

Roku’s Hotel and Dorm Connect feature is very interesting. This allows you to connect to a new network offsite, and was designed to accommodate students and people on vacation.

When you connect to a Hotel network, for example, you’ll need to go through a new authentication process.

  1. Plug your Roku stick into a new TV.
  2. Press the Home button.
  3. Use the remote to navigate to Settings.
  4. Choose Network.
  5. Select Set Up Connection.
  6. Pick Wireless.
  7. Select the first option – I am at a hotel or college dorm.

Using the second option, I am at home, will make your Roku stick try to connect to your home Wi-Fi network. So why all the fuss? First of all, this can protect you from other people charging up your data plan if you lose your Roku stick or if someone steals it.

Furthermore, it helps the people at Roku understand who’s using your personal device, from where, and why. At the same time, this also ensures that you can enjoy Roku with all your personalized settings even on a foreign device and on a foreign network.

Note that access to a smartphone and tablet will also be required, because this is a two-step authentication process. You should also have the Wi-Fi password to the local network on hand, otherwise this will be a pointless process.

Now, here’s what’s really cool. After you’re done using the hotel’s TV and you move on, that network won’t be saved in your device’s memory. Not when you check the networks from back home, nor will the preferences be saved, should you have to revisit that same hotel.

Is There Any Reason to Want to Make Your Roku Forget a Wi-Fi Network?

One could argue that looking at what networks have been accessed could help someone track your movements. Someone like a spouse, parent, or an ex. But, because of how Roku devices are set up, this can’t happen because there’s no Wi-Fi network history to access.

Therefore, you can rest assured that as long as you delete your browsing history, your guilty pleasures remain your own. Did you ever do a factory reset to hide your network activity on Roku? Let us know in the comments section below.

The exact same thing happened to mine. It was working a few days ago, and it suddenly stopped working tonight and said it couldn’t connect to the network. When I scan for Wifi networks, it doesn’t show any available, even though I have two Wifi access points here, and it used to be able to pick up several of my neighbor’s networks. My other computers are working fine on Wifi. When I go to the Information tab in the Roku setup screens, it says that my Wireless MAC address is 00:00:00:00:00:00. I’ve tried the factory reset and unplugging the unit for 5 minutes to allow it to reset.

I’ve emailed Roku support and am waiting for their reply.

Hopefully they will come through.

If I do hear anything from them I will post it here.

Still no luck. Wired MAC appears fine, Wireless MAC all zeros.
Anyone have any idea if details of build releases are posted (and whether or not updates are solicited vs unsolicited)? I was reading another thread, and it looks like 2.5 build 370 may be relatively new.

Yeah 2.5 b370 is new. I haven’t run into a situation with a zeroed out MAC but maybe someone else has experienced this, and can jump in here.

Yours is probably related to a router setting. Try disabling any firewalls in the router temporarily, and try toggling any QOS settings that may be available.

I’m having the same problem.

Wireless was working on Wednesday but when I went to watch Netflix today I received the unable to connect message. Guided setup showed no wireless networks and didn’t give me an option to enter an SSID, all i could do was press the "up" key to return to the previous screen.

I also see six 00 for my wireless MAC address. My wired connection does work but it isn’t ideal since i have to run an ethernet cord across a doorway to reach the player.

Also, i’ve reset the player with no luck. I doubt this is my wireless network since my machine used to detect neighboring signals and currently does not.

I’ve also contacted support and hope to see this resolved soon. I’m sorry that i don’t have an answer to this.
