How to search everything on facebook

It seems like social networking wasn’t enough for Facebook to keep those 1.71 Billion users engaged enough. The company announced in 2016 an extension to its business model with the introduction of Facebook Marketplace.

As of October 2019, Facebook Marketplace is used in 70 countries by 800 million people around the world each month. It’s a great growth given the fact that the platform started just 3 years ago.

What is Facebook Marketplace?

Just like eBay and Gumtree, Facebook has extended its business model to include an online marketplace feature which lets you discover, buy, and sell items to the people in your area/community. The platform is similar to eBay but with an added touch of ‘Social-ness’. You get to chat with the other party over Facebook messenger and also have access to their Facebook profile.

Once you’ve accessed Marketplace, you’ll see listings organized by categories like Entertainment, Vehicles, Housing, and Hobbies. You can either choose the category of products you’re interested in or search for a specific item in the Marketplace search bar. Once you find the item you’d like to buy, you can send the message to the seller to negotiate.

Remember – Facebook does not facilitate the payment or delivery of items in Marketplace. You and the other party get to decide it on your own.

How To Sell On Facebook Marketplace?

Almost anything (except guns and other restricted items), whether new or old, can be put on sale on Facebook Marketplace. All you have to do is –

  • Click on + Sell Something button
  • Click Item for Sale
  • Enter a title, price, location, and category of the listing.
  • Click + 10 Photos and upload photos of your item
  • Click Post

Remember – Even though your friends don’t get a notification when you list anything on Marketplace, the can view your listings if they live near your house. There is no way you can turn that off.

How To Renew Your Listing On Marketplace?

There are times when even after seven days, the item for sale remains unsold. In such a case, you can decide to remove the listing or renew it.

To renew your listing –

  • Tap on “Your Items,”
  • Tap on the listing you want to renew and select “Manage.”
  • From the menu on your screen, select “Renew in Marketplace.”

FB Marketplace for E-Commerce

Facebook has launched a pilot program in USA where it lets E-Commerce brands connect and sell their products on Facebook Marketplace. The company has already partnered with inventory partners like Big Commerce, CommerceHub, etc. to get their partners on-board.

The History Of Facebook Marketplace

It all started in February 2015 when Facebook introduced buy and sell groups which let users add items for sale in such groups which included adding a description of the product, setting up a price and set a pick-up or delivery location.

Why Facebook Marketplace?

Looks like the current user data information available to Facebook isn’t enough to carry on its revenue generation through ads. It wants advertisements to be more targeted.

How Marketplace helps Facebook in better revenue generation?

Well, this feature certainly resulted in users spending more time on Facebook (Ebay’s userbase has been poached), posting about what they want to sell (because they’ve already bought or going to buy that item soon), looking for things to buy (they can buy that item from Facebook’s advertiser too, if it’s affordable) and chat with the strangers (more use of Facebook messenger).

There were already around 450 million users in the buy and sell groups when Facebook Marketplace was launched. Hence, this was a tried and tested option to roll out.

These groups were privately owned and were so diverse that Facebook didn’t have much control over the sale offers posted. Some of the products posted (like guns, drugs, etc.) violated the website’s new policies. Marketplace, which acts as a commonplace to buy sell goods, also helps Facebook keeping a check on such products

Is Facebook Marketplace Better than eBay?

Yes. Many think Facebook to be a better marketplace than eBay as unlike eBay, which is a typical marketplace, Facebook has positioned itself as a social marketplace where you can not just see the seller’s profile but can see the mutual friends you have (in case you want to inquire about him) and can also chat with him using Facebook messenger.

But, unlike eBay, Facebook does not facilitate the payment or delivery of items in Marketplace. There is also no comments or review feature on the marketplace yet.

How To Remove Marketplace From Facebook App?

Fb marketplace is a permanent feature in the Facebook application and unfortunately, you can’t remove or disable the Fb Marketplace feature from the Facebook application yet. We’ll update this section as soon as we find any information from Facebook about removing Fb Marketplace from Facebook App.

Messenger, an instant messaging service owned by Facebook, launched in August 2011, replacing Facebook Chat. You don’t need a Facebook account to use it, so it’s available for individuals who haven’t signed up or have closed down their accounts. While the two are partially connected when you have a Facebook account, you aren’t required to have one.

How to Access Facebook Messenger

Messenger can be used in conjunction with Facebook on your computer, at, or by accessing the mobile app on Android and iOS devices. Because Messenger works on iPhones, it also works on the Apple Watch.

You can also install add-ons in some browsers for faster access to Messenger. They’re not official Facebook apps. They’re third-party extensions that non-Facebook developers released for free. For example, Firefox users can install the Messenger for Facebook add-on to put Messenger on the side of their screens and use it while on other websites, in a split-screen fashion.

Send Text, Pictures, and Video

At its core, Messenger is a texting app for both one-on-one and group messaging, but it can also send images and video. It also includes lots of built-in emojis, stickers, and GIFs.

Some useful features included in Messenger is its indicator to see when a person is typing, delivered receipts, read receipts, and a timestamp for when the message was sent, with another for when the recipient read the most recent one.

Much like on Facebook, Messenger lets you react to messages on both the website and app.

Another great thing about sharing images and videos through Messenger is that the app and website collect all the media files so you can quickly sift through them.

If you're using Messenger with your Facebook account, any private Facebook message appears in it. You can delete these texts as well as archive and unarchive them to hide or unhide them from constant view.

Facebook added the ability to swipe to archive chats quickly in May 2021. You can also find your archived conversations by going to your profile > Archived chats.

Make Voice or Video Calls

Messenger also supports audio and video calls from the mobile app, the desktop version, and the Facebook site. The phone icon is for audio calls, while the camera icon makes face-to-face video calls. If you're using Messenger's calling features on Wi-Fi, you can use the app or website to make free internet calls.

Send Money

Messenger functions as a simple way to send money to people using just your debit card information. You can do this from both the website and the mobile app.

To use it, go into a conversation, open the menu, then select Send Money. You can choose to either send money or ask for it. Alternatively, you can send a text with a price in it and then select it to open the prompt to pay or request payment. You can even add a short memo to the transaction so you can remember its purpose.

Play Games

Messenger lets you play games within the app or via the website, even while in a group message. You don't have to download another app or visit another site to start playing with other Messenger users.

Share Your Location

Instead of using a dedicated app to show someone where you are, you can let recipients follow your location for up to an hour with Messenger's built-in location-sharing feature, which only works from the mobile app.

Facebook Messenger Features

Although Messenger doesn’t have a calendar, it does let you create event reminders through the Reminders button on the mobile app. Another neat way to do it is to send a message that contains a reference to a day, and the app automatically asks you if you want to make a reminder. Like many other apps, Facebook Messenger has a dark mode.

The name of a group message can be customized, as can the nickname of the people involved. The color theme of each conversation thread can be modified as well.

Audio clips can be sent through Messenger if you'd like to send a message without having to text or make a full audio call. You can even tap-and-record when creating it instead of holding your finger down on the mic icon if you want to go hands-free.

Notifications can be silenced on a per-conversation basis for a specified number of hours or completely turned off, both for the desktop version of Messenger and through the mobile app.

Add new Messenger contacts by inviting contacts from your phone or, if you’re on Facebook, your Facebook friends. There’s also a custom Scan Code you can grab from within the app and share with others, who can then scan your code to add you to their Messenger instantly.

A Facebook Group is a place for group communication, letting people share their common interests and express their opinions. Groups let people come together around a common cause, issue, or activity to organize, express objectives, discuss issues, post photos, and share related content. Anybody can create and manage a Facebook Group, and you can even join up to 6,000 other Groups.

Groups, as discussed below, are not the same as private group messaging used in Facebook Messenger.

Quick Facts About Facebook Groups

Here are some short tidbits on how Facebook Groups work:

  • Any Facebook user can make a group.
  • Some groups let anyone join, but others might be private.
  • When joining a group, whether private or public, your Facebook friends might see that you've joined it.
  • Some groups are secret and can't be searched for, in which case a qualifying group member has to invite you.
  • Leaving a group will not notify the other members.
  • Only the creator of the group, and anyone they make an admin, has the power to invite someone to a group.
  • You can create events, upload pictures and videos, and share files within a group.
  • Groups can be deleted by removing all the members.
  • Group admins can invite people to become Group Experts; experts have a badge next to their name and can help spread credible information to the group.

Facebook Pages vs. Groups

Groups on Facebook have undergone changes since they were first implemented. There was a time when a user's groups would appear on their own personal page. So, if you were in a group called “Football Fans,” everyone who could see your profile would know this about you.

Now, however, those types of open forums are known as Facebook Pages, created by companies, celebrities, and brands to engage with their audience and post interesting content. Only administrators of Pages can post to the account, while those who like the Page can comment on any posts and pictures.

You use your personal profile to engage with other Page users and group members. Whenever you post something, you're posting with your Facebook profile's name and photo.

Unlike Facebook Pages, which are always public, a Facebook Group doesn't have to be. Many Facebook Groups are closed; you submit a request to join the group and have access when an admin approves you. Only other members of a private group can see your posts, questions, and comments. (More on this below)

On the other hand, if you comment on or like a Page, all of your information will be available to anyone on Facebook who looks at that Page.

So, if someone were to visit the NFL on CBS Facebook Page, they could see anyone who was commenting on a photo or discussing an article. This could cause some privacy concerns, especially if you don’t have a solid understanding of how to use Facebook’s privacy settings to protect your personal profile.

Closed Facebook Groups

A Group can be more private than a Page because the creator has the option to make it closed. When a group is closed, only those invited to the Group can see the content and information shared within it.

An example of a Facebook Group might be team members working on a project together and want to communicate with one another more efficiently. By creating a Group, the team is given a private forum to share ideas on the project and post updates, just like with a Page.

Still, all information is shared only with those within the group once it's made closed. Others will still be able to see that the group exists, but they won't be able to see its members or any posts or information within the closed Group unless they are invited.

Secret Facebook Groups

Even more private than the closed Group is the secret group. This type of group is exactly what you would expect it to be: secret. Nobody on Facebook can see a secret group other than those in the group.

This group will not appear anywhere on your profile, and only those within the group can see who the members are and what is posted. These groups could be used if you are planning an event that you don't want somebody to know about, or if you just want a secure platform to talk with friends.

Another example might be a family who wants to share pictures and news on Facebook but without other friends seeing everything.

Public Facebook Groups

The third privacy setting for a Group is public, meaning that anyone can see who is in the group and what has been posted. Still, only members of the group can post within it.

See this table from Facebook that shows some other details on how these privacy settings differ for each type of Facebook Group.

Networking: Groups vs. Pages

Another way groups are different from Pages is that they work on smaller networks than the entire Facebook network. You can limit your group to the network for your college, high school, or company, as well as make it a group for members of any network.

A Page can accumulate as many likes as possible. Facebook doesn't set a limit on the number of group members you can have, but after a group reaches 5,000 people, there are some restrictions put into place, such as admins not being able to send one message to all group members.

Once inside the group, you can choose to sort by most recent posts or most recent activity. If a Facebook group has fewer than 250 people, group members can see how many times the post has been viewed. After a group exceeds 250 members, this feature is disabled.

Another difference between joining a group and liking a Page is the number of notifications that you receive. When in a group, you can set your notification preferences to be alerted every time there's a post in the group or when a friend posts, or you can turn off notifications.

With a Page, however, you'll be notified when someone likes your comment or tags you in a comment, much like with regular comments and likes on Facebook.

Unique Features

A unique feature only offered in Pages is Page Insights. This allows the Page administrators to see what activity the Page has been receiving during a period of time, even in a graphical representation.

This is just one of the many ways Facebook Pages allow you to monitor the audience and how well your product or message is being received. These analytics are not offered, or needed, in Groups because they're meant to communicate with a small, select number of people rather than a wide-scale audience.

Groups have unique features, as well, including the admin's ability to designate members as Group Experts. Experts have a badge next to their name so group members can pay particular intention to informative posts. Admins and Group Experts can collaborate on Q&A sessions, address concerns, respond to questions, and more.
