I used to be questioning if anybody would possibly have the option to level me in the path of the place to discover the OpenOffice temp information on my laptop computer. I would love to use the pc’s search operate for locating them, however do not know if I can, or what extension to use, and so on.

To reply your query, I’m utilizing OpenOffice to write all of my paperwork. I had a crash earlier than I might save and identify a variety of the docs I had open, as I used to be organizing issues and ready to identify the docs in accordance to what was in them — thus the docs *weren’t* named or saved. Once I recovered from the crash, OpenOffice routinely introduced up the recovered never-saved paperwork. However the paperwork had a variety of lacking info in them.

I had seen that when my pc crashed earlier than, and I had an OpenOffice doc open that *was* named and saved alongside the way in which, when the pc got here again up, the recovered doc was not the most recent model. OpenOffice routinely recovers the paperwork that had been open when the crash occurred, however there’s some sort of error or bug, as a result of it does not get better the final auto-saved model. I found this when it routinely recovered a doc by itself, and when it did, I knew there was info lacking from it, and determined to open the doc from the file folder it was in, to see what was in that doc. Lo and behold, it had all of the data in it, and none was lacking. So the restoration function does not get better the most recent auto-saved model.

My concern is with the paperwork that had been recovered however had by no means been named and saved. It recovers them as “untitled 1”, and so on, however it additionally doesn’t get better the most recent auto-saved model. So since I cannot go to a file folder and open up the latest model, because it was by no means saved by me, I hope to discover the latest temp file for it.

Does that make sense? I am unsure I described it very nicely!!

If you’re in a position to work out how to level me in the precise path, I’d simply respect it so!!

The paperwork had been crucial as they pertain to all of my day by day medical monitoring, as I’m ailing and bedridden, and should maintain monitor of issues carefully. That is why I’m so determined to discover the temp information.

I have been fortunately utilizing blueproximity in 13.10, however since improve to 14.04 it solely locks when my cellphone goes out of vary (utilizing gnome-screensaver-command -l ), however it doesn’t unlock with gnome-screensaver-command -d .

Now the rationale that gnome-screensaver-command -d does not work is due to a bug.

Nevertheless on that bug report it’s talked about that the gnome-screensaver is now not used in trusty and subsequently the gnome-screensaver-command is predicted to be phased out, which may be associated to why the command does not work.

So my query is, if the gnome-screensaver is changed, then what could be the brand new command to unlock the display screen with out counting on gnome-screensaver-command ?

@Braiam This query is particular to 14.04 and later. Why did you take away the tag? There isn’t a purpose why to keep away from utilizing gnome-screensaver-command in earlier variations!

Your self answered: 14.04 and later. 14.04 must be used provided that that is the one model affected, which isn’t true since 14.10 has it. BTW, don’t ask about bugs.

@Braiam 1. I have no idea about later!! How can I? There isn’t a later model but. As of now it is just 14.04. And I didn’t ask about bugs. So should you do not thoughts, I’ll revert your edit.

This labored for me:

On the command line:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.a11y.applications screen-keyboard-enabled true

The on-screen keyboard seems whenever you first sign-in however you may shut it.

After this gnome-screensaver-command -d works.

This must be a lot larger rated than the opposite solutions. You shouldn’t put your password in these scripts, that is actually dangerous!

There isn’t a means of doing this sadly 🙁

Replace – I’ve discovered a means. Try my newer reply

That is my earlier resolution – It’s unadvisable to use, it’s not unlockable should you lose your cellphone; you’ve to restart to unlock it

I ultimately got here up with an answer – do not lock it in the primary place. This will sound odd – bear with.

As a substitute of locking it, I disabled the Mouse and Keyboard, hid all desktop icons after which switched to the desktop. You may probably cover extra stuff (just like the launcher) however I’ve that hidden anyway.

This command requires a little bit of setup.

Set up : xdotool – sudo apt-get set up xdotool

Enter: xinput –list and be aware down your mouse and keyboard ids.

I might recommend modifying these instructions in gedit

This one acts because the locker.

xinput set-prop ‘Gadget Enabled’ 0 && xinput set-prop ‘Gadget Enabled’ 0 && gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background show-desktop-icons false && wmctrl -k on

This acts because the unlock.

xinput set-prop ‘Gadget Enabled’ 1 && xinput set-prop ‘Gadget Enabled’ 1 && gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background show-desktop-icons true && wmctrl -k off

Change the and to their respective numbers, in each instructions.

  • Disables / Allows the Keyboard
  • Disables / Allows the Mouse
  • Hides / Exhibits all your desktop icons
  • Toggles displaying your desktop.

One vital factor to bear in thoughts – this cannot be undone with out your bluetooth machine. If for some purpose it fails, you’ve to restart. Due to that, it may be advisable to go away the keyboard enabled, and arrange the unlock command to a selected shortcut.

Hey good thought! Wouldn’t it be doable to change such that any keyboard enter will lock the display screen as an alternative (giving an opportunity of unlocking it with out the bluetooth machine) as an alternative of ignoring all keyboard enter?

@d_inevitable Take a look at my new reply, it’s neater (particularly the 2nd technique). I am fairly positive it really works.

So, I figured the “finest” means to do that (apocryphal, since we’re nonetheless storing a password and faking typing it right into a factor) could be to, as I commented above, encrypt the password to the entry USB key. It is a little bit messy of a script, so I will clarify what is going on on.

The gadgets for the present person are enumerated by wanting by /and so on/pamusb.conf with xpath; every one is then mated with its UUID utilizing xpath, and the UUID mapped to a tool utilizing blkid.

You might have the selection to lock, unlock present machine, or arrange your key. Once you run setup, it’s going to create ~/.ssh/pamusb_rsa if it does not exist. You may then be requested to decide a tool (or not, if there’s just one), and to enter your password. Your PW shall be saved, encrypted, in /.pamusb/.auth.

Once you run unlock, the gadgets are enumerated once more, and checked one after the other for a /.pamusb/.auth file. When one’s noticed, decryption shall be tried and, if profitable, shall be used to sort your password into no matter occurs to be accepting textual content in the meanwhile. It’ll solely allow run when the session is locked, so hopefully, this is not going to expose you too dangerous.

I named this ~/.bin/unity-lock-control (~/.bin is on my path), and have “unity-lock-control lock” and “unity-lock-control unlock” as my brokers in pam.conf.

I’ve simply upgraded my distribution from 13.10 to 14.04, which appears to have damaged world keyboard shortcuts.

They’re nonetheless current in the “Keyboard settings” as earlier than. Though media keys are affected, so are different world shortcuts like Ctrl+Alt+T for Terminal. Different keyboard shortcuts work at an utility degree nonetheless, nevertheless.

I’m additionally at present utilizing Gnome Shell as my desktop setting, though the Alt+F2 shortcut for shell instructions nonetheless appears to work.

Does anybody know of how this might have been triggered?

Three Solutions 3

I simply bumped into this situation on my laptop computer. I am not sure why, since my set up has been working superb for a number of months, however simply as we speak all the shortcuts in the “Keyboard settings” ceased to work. As is hinted at briefly on the backside of this thread, there appears to be a nasty gnome configuration. I attempted eradicating my ~/.gconf folder (after making a backup first!) and logging out/in, and that fastened my downside. The total steps to repair had been:

  1. Open up your private home folder by urgent the Home windows (or meta) key or by clicking on the primary icon in the doc, then typing Recordsdata and opening the Recordsdata utility.
  2. Present hidden information and folders by urgent Ctrl + H .
  3. Discover the .gconf folder and rename it to .gconfg.bak .
  4. Cover hidden information and folders once more by urgent Ctrl + H .
  5. Log off of your account and again in. whereas a few of your settings could also be again to default, your shortcuts ought to work once more.

Yeah I did that, however it did not work. I believe my specific situation might have been one thing else over-riding gsettings. I’ve since reinstalled my whole system and have not run into the issue since.

That is honest. It looks like there have been a few completely different points right here which manifested themselves with the identical signs, so it is possible that what labored for me may not be just right for you. Glad you bought it fastened although!

Likewise you delete rows in order to shrink the record.

TheGurkha wrote: Click on in the column you need to type by, however do not spotlight the column. Then type. I simply tried it and all rows in all columns moved accordingly, not simply the column I resolve to type by.

How do I handle (add/take away) all the startup applications in Ubuntu 11.10 and up?

@tijybba sure. I’m utilizing 12.04. Nevertheless, after restarting, I can see record of packages. Thanks . This query is dublicate. Please give vote to shut .

As stated above, you’ve to edit /and so on/xdg/autostart/ and both:

  • take away the NoDisplay=true traces;
  • or make those self same traces feedback by including # in entrance of them;
  • or substitute true by false in those self same traces.

The third resolution might be simply accomplished in three steps:

Summon the terminal with Ctrl + Alt + T .

Kind the 2 following instructions:

After altering something you need, you may return to the earlier state by typing this into the terminal:

This has been examined in 12.04, 12.10 and 13.04.

[Source: iloveubuntu.net, thank you Nikhil Sinha for the link]

how will you disable them should you should not have root entry? these begin gnome apps for KDE which I do not need

The primary suggestion has labored for me. I simply cd /and so on/exdg/autostart and eliminated this system I needed to take away from the autostart listing. You’ll be able to view autostart packages by run ls and from the record you may see the appliance or program you need to take away.

should you edit /and so on/xdg/autostart/ remember, that it is best to undo these adjustments earlier than you improve your system, in any other case you’ll get a query if you’d like to maintain the edited .desktop information or use the package deal maintainers default for every of these information! A greater resolution is to create information in ~/.config/autostart/ as steered in @TormodVolden ‘s reply

Take away the NoDisplay=true line from every entry in /and so on/xdg/autostart/ Then simply uncheck those you don’t need in Startup Applications. Typically although the autostart apps are there for a purpose so ensure you know what you are doing whenever you disable them.

There are additionally numerous companies which retailer their configuration information in /and so on/init . Most customers should not contact these information although.

Jeremy – Thanks for the tip. BTW, used BUM (bootup-manager) to disable most of the companies which I do not use and shaved the boot time. I appreciated Ubuntu, however 11.10 ignored some basic items, like including customers to teams from UI, display screen savers, simply modifying unity launcher icons. I’m not an enormous fan of UI, however a UI will simply get extra individuals on-board.

The proper means to do that as a traditional person is to copy the desktop file in query from /and so on/xdg/autostart/ to ~/.config/autostart/ (create the listing first if wanted) and edit this copy to state NoDisplay=false . Then open “Startup Applications Preferences” and uncheck the corresponding field.

Now you want to take away the NoDisplay=true key from the information after copying them, which might be accomplished with sed for all of them with

You continue to want to take away the NoDisplay=true key from the information after copying them, which might be accomplished with sed -i ‘/NoDisplay=true/s/^/#/’ ~/.config/autostart/*.desktop .

I believe that is one of the simplest ways to do that, as a result of it is going to make sure that adjustments are continued even when the appliance updates.

keep in mind to examine the information in ~/.config/autostart/ after a system improve for any adjustments in contrast to the default information in /and so on/xdg/autostart/ in case one thing was added throughout improve

It is regular that you do not see something listed. The Extra startup packages record is only for packages that begin up for the present person (not essentially for different customers, and never all the companies that begin when Ubuntu boots). Moreover, it does not record the conventional elements of the desktop setting that begin when the person logs in graphically.

Anybody can examine this by clicking “Startup applications”. Its clean by default.

If you need to have the hidden startup entries proven (similar to replace notifier, orca display screen reader, onboard, and so on), simply sort/copy and paste the next in a terminal:

If you need to cover the usually hidden entries, simply sort/copy and paste the next
