How to troubleshoot your zoom call

If you are hearing feedback or echoes in your meeting, that means there is a device in the meeting that is channeling your audio back.

There are 3 main causes of audio echo or feedback in a Zoom meeting:

Case 1: A participant has both the computer and telephone audio active

If you join from a computer and call in from the telephone, please make sure you either:

  • Enter your participant ID when calling in, or enter #participant ID# when already in the call
  • Or, use the Audio Settingscaret to the right of the Mute/Unmute button to manually Leave Computer Audio.

Case 2: Participants with computer or telephones speakers that are too close to each other

If another participant is too close to you, and both of you have speakers on, either hang up one of the telephone connections or select Leave audio conference on one of the computers.

Case 3: Multiple computers with active audio in the same conference room

If you are in a conference room with multiple devices, disconnect your computer audio from the other devices. Muting your speaker is not enough.

  • On a PC or Mac: Select Audio Options > Leave Computer Audio
  • On an Android or iPhone: Select Disconnect

To figure out which attendee is causing the echo:

  1. Choose one way of muting all attendees:
    1. The host can mute the attendees one at a time
    2. The host can mute all of the attendees at once
    3. Attendees can mute themselves

    How to troubleshoot your zoom call

    Being tech-savvy is a gift and a curse. When you know how to fix computers, you become “the computer person” for everyone you know. However, you can’t always troubleshoot in person.

    If you’re using the same platform as the person you’re helping—both on Windows or both on macOS—providing remote tech support is very simple, and you won’t need to install any extra software. Helping someone on a different platform gets a bit trickier, but we’ll give you the right tools for the job.

    Quick Assist: Windows 10 to Windows 10

    Windows has two remote assistance tools built in to the operating system: Quick Assist, which is new in Windows 10, and Windows Remote Assistance, which is available on Windows 7, 8, and 10. If both you and your friend are using Windows 10, you’ll want to use Quick Assist. As its name suggests, it’s quicker and easier than its older cousin.

    Open the Start menu and search for Quick Assist, or launch the app from the Windows Accessories folder in the Start menu.

    In the window that appears, click the Assist Another Person button under Give Assistance. Sign in with your Microsoft account (you need a Microsoft account to help, but your friend or relative does not), and you’ll be given a six-digit code that expires in 10 minutes.

    If you aren’t on the phone with the other person already, give them a call—walking them through the process is much easier over the phone than email. Have them launch Quick Assist, and under the Get Assistance section, type the six-digit code you give them from your screen.

    After entering the code, they will be prompted to give you permission to access their screen. You’ll then be able to use their computer as if you were sitting in front of it. You can even use the Remote Reboot option to reboot their computer and automatically re-initiate the Quick Assist connection. After all, half of computer problems are fixed by turning it off and on again.

    Windows Remote Assistance: Windows to Windows

    If your friend or family member is still using Windows 7 or 8, you will need to use the older Remote Assistance tool. The tool is similar to Quick Assist, but it’s far clunkier to use. They should head to the Control Panel and search for Invite Someone to Connect to Your PC. They will need to send you a file over email that initiates the connection, then tell you the password that appears (preferably over the phone) so you can access their machine.

    They may also be able to select Easy Connect, which only requires them giving you a password, but it might be grayed out in certain circumstances.

    Mac to Mac

    Mac users can provide remote help using the Messages app. This feature launched in OS X 10.10 Mavericks, so anyone with a relatively recent, up-to-date Mac should be able to take advantage. You will both need to be signed in to Messages with your Apple ID as well.

    Open the Messages app on your Mac and select the conversation with the friend or relative you want to help; if it doesn’t exist, start a new conversation. Your conversation should have the blue bubbles, indicating that you’re both using iMessage. Click the “i” button in the upper right-hand corner of the window, then click Share.

    From here, you can ask the other person to share their screen with you. (If you run into problems, they can also go to this menu and invite you to view their screen.) On older versions of macOS, you can right-click on the conversation and choose Ask to Share Screen as well.

    They will receive a pop-up asking for permission to share their screen with you. Make sure they have the Control My Screen option selected and click Accept. From there, you can control their computer and walk them through whatever problem they’re having.

    If you’re trying to remotely troubleshoot a problem on a Mac you own—say, one your child uses for online learning—you can use Apple’s built-in VNC client.

    Troubleshooting Between Windows and Mac

    Unfortunately, neither Windows nor macOS’ built-in options let you share screens with someone from the opposite platform. So you will need to find something else. Plenty of video chat apps, including Zoom, Skype, and others let participants share their screen with the click of a button.

    Zoom users can give or request control of the screen using the Remote Control option. To request control, click the View Options drop-down menu while in a call and select Request Remote Control. The meeting host can then grant you control. You can also give control while screen sharing. Click the Remote Control option and choose the user.

    You can do the same in Microsoft Teams. Take control of someone’s screen by clicking Request control while they are sharing their screen. If you’re sharing the screen, select Give control in the sharing toolbar and select the person in order to share control with them.

    Chrome Remote Desktop

    If you absolutely need to control someone else’s screen, your best bet is Chrome Remote Desktop, which doesn’t come with the security issues that remote access tools like TeamViewer have had in the past few years.

    To use Chrome Remote Desktop, you must both launch Google Chrome and head to the Remote Desktop site, then click Share My Screen (yes, even though you aren’t sharing your screen). Next, the other person will have to click the blue download arrow under Share This Screen.

    This will download a small helper app they’ll need to install on their PC. Once it installs successfully, they should click the Generate Code button that will appear on their screen-sharing page. That will produce a 12-digit access code you’ll need to gain access to their computer.

    On your PC, from the Remote Desktop site, type in that code under Connect to Another Computer. Your friend will then need to grant you permission, after which you can control their computer and help them solve their problem.

    If this process seems a bit more convoluted, it is, but that’s par for the course when you have to install another piece of software (especially one that requires Chrome). However, in our experience, it’s the best option available, especially once you get through those first few steps. Future remote sessions should be much easier to initiate.

    Poor audio quality during video meetings is troublesome. The good news is that the problem is often easily solvable. By making some small tweaks and learning a few troubleshooting tips, you’ll be better prepared to hear—and be heard—during your next Zoom session.

    Be mindful of your environment

    Strive to have a quiet background for your calls. Avoid joining from your car. Turn off or move away from noise sources like air conditioners or washing machines. Before you’re tempted to attend a meeting outdoors, consider that even the slightest breeze can get picked up by your microphone. Your sound quality may also suffer if you’re in an empty room with hard surfaces that produce lots of echoes. Instead, pick smaller rooms filled with furniture, curtains, or carpeting. Bedrooms and offices are ideal. Remember to mute your microphone when you’re not speaking and encourage others to do the same.

    Use the right equipment

    While your laptop’s built-in mic will work, it may not always pick up your voice clearly. And computer mics can pick up room noises or vibrations from your desk. Your audio quality will be vastly improved if you use wired headphones with a built-in microphone. Even better, try a wired headset with active and passive noise cancellation. While you can use Bluetooth, there are some drawbacks. There is an inherent delay with a Bluetooth audio connection compared to a wired one and you’ll need to worry about keeping your equipment charged.     Maintain a strong internet connection

    If your internet connection isn’t strong, you and your participants may hear garbled voices or speech delays. To avoid this, close as many programs and tabs as you can before hopping into a call. Connecting your device to an ethernet jack will also provide a more stable connection than wireless. If that’s not possible, moving closer to your router may help. When you’re in a virtual meeting, ask other members of your household to avoid activities that use lots of bandwidth.     Know how to troubleshoot

    If you can’t hear participants or be heard during a Zoom meeting, try using these five simple tips to troubleshoot the issue.

    Test your speaker and microphone in Zoom. If you’re having trouble hearing others or they’re having trouble hearing you during a call, you can test your mic and speakers without others on the call knowing, as long as you remember to mute yourself first. Follow these steps:

    1. In the bottom of the Zoom window, click the arrow next to the audio/mute icon and select “Test Speaker & Microphone”
    2. Follow the prompts by answering yes or no to correctly connect your audio
    3. Select your microphone and speaker option
    4. Your computer may default to a lower quality microphone or speaker. Follow these steps to ensure you’ve selected the microphone and speaker you want to use:

    Switch to phone audio to remediate a low bandwidth issue. If pinched bandwidth is reducing your audio quality, you can switch to use your phone for audio, even while the meeting is in progress. Follow these steps to prompt Zoom to call your phone:

    1. Click the arrow next to the audio/mute icon
    2. Select the “Switch to phone audio”
    3. Select the Call me audio conference option
    4. Enter the phone number you want Zoom to call
    5. Click “Call me”

    Turn off video to remediate a low bandwidth issue. To preserve your internet bandwidth for audio, disable video by clicking the video icon at the bottom of the Zoom window.

    Leave the meeting and reboot Zoom or your computer. If all else fails, a quick reboot may solve the problem. Let your participants know that you’re leaving the meeting and restart Zoom. If that doesn’t work, try rebooting your computer.

    This would be all but possible even ten years ago, as many of the tools we use today weren't available, and the whole concept of remote work wasn't that widely spread.

    Insufficient Hardware And Software Issues

    More commonly, lag is caused on your end, and problems are on your computer.

    First, your computer might be infected with malware, which causes slow internet speeds. This is a problem on its own, so make sure you have an updated anti-virus software installed (Windows Defender is a good option too).

    However, more commonly lag is caused by other apps you installed on your PC, which are running all the time, consuming resources. If you have a weaker machine, this will lead to high CPU usage and insufficient memory. Even if your PC has the muscle, it is worth optimizing your connection, as you don't want those resources wasted.

    The problem with this is that many processes run in the background by default, without your knowledge. And even if you do decide to find out what uses so much resources, the chances are that you can't do much about it. The only way to free up those resources is to uninstall the apps that are using them. However, you installed them for a reason; deleting them is not an option.

    • For an Android device, tap the blue mirror icon and wait for the scanning process to complete. Once done, choose the name of your PC and tap “Start now” to mirror your Android to PC and share your phone screen with others.
    • For an iOS device, open “Control Center” and tap “Screen Mirroring”. Choose the name of your PC to start sharing your iOS screen.


    The above-mentioned ways are helpful and easy to follow when Zoom screen sharing doesn’t work properly. If you follow the steps laid out above, you should have no trouble. Also, if you do not want to use the built-in screen sharing tool, you may turn to ApowerMirror; it allows you to share your screen just as well.

    Zoom has finally added a new feature that we’ve all been waiting for—automatic updates. Rather than staying on top of keeping zoom updated yourself, the app will handle the process on its own, leaving you to worry about showing up for meetings on time.

    “We are excited to announce we’re launching an automatic update feature designed to streamline this process and help make security second nature,” said Zoom’s Jeromie Clark in a blog post.

    How to troubleshoot your zoom call

    To turn on automatic updates, you need to go to Settings in your Zoom app and then toggle “Automatically keep my Zoom up to date.” You will then be asked to enter admin credentials, which will only be required one time to enable the setting.

    Once you’ve turned it on, Zoom will prompt you to update when you’re not in a meeting when a new version is available. This will save you from needing to check for an update yourself every time. You’ll be able to get the latest features and any security fixes as they launch, instead of when you hear about the update or happen to check to see if there’s a new version.

    Zoom is also offering different update paths. There’s the Slow option, which is selected by default. This setting provides fewer updates and focuses on stability. The Fast option allows you to grab the latest features as soon as they become available but at the possible cost of stability.
