How to turn a portrait image landscape

Whether you’re using a single monitor for a specific purpose at your business or you want to add some variety to a multiple-monitor setup, you have some additional work to do besides physically positioning the monitor vertically or horizontally. Windows doesn’t automatically detect the monitor’s orientation, so you have to adjust the display settings so that the screen content rotates appropriately. While adjusting the monitor, you also have some decisions to make that affect the layout and scale of the monitor. Take a look at some steps for landscape and portrait monitor setup.

Monitor Orientation Considerations

You may want to change the monitor orientation if you’re experiencing a problem where on-screen content appears flipped or upside down suddenly. This problem can occur if you accidentally pressed a key combination that switches the Windows orientation settings. You might also have an issue with the installed monitor software, so it’s worth checking with the manufacturer’s troubleshooting resources if the problem happens multiple times after you fix the settings.

If you’re changing the monitor orientation voluntarily, know there are pros and cons to both orientations. SmartFile explains that a portrait monitor orientation helps software developers see more code and work more efficiently, but this setting leads to more glare. On the other hand, the landscape monitor orientation makes it easier to work with more programs at the same time, and it is often used for giving presentations or multitasking.

Preparing to Change Monitor Orientation

Before you proceed with the landscape or portrait monitor setup process in Windows, position the monitor in the orientation you plan to use. This makes it easier to determine whether you’ve chosen the right settings and to adjust configurations such as the screen resolution to suit your needs. You also must have your monitor connected, turned on, and set up in Windows so that it appears in the display devices list.

Landscape or Portrait Monitor Setup

When you’re ready, Microsoft recommends Windows 10 users open the “Settings” app, look for the “System” option, and then select “Display” to bring up the scale and layout options. You can also type “display settings” in the Windows search box and click the corresponding option if you’d rather save some time. Look for a “Display orientation” drop-down menu in the “Scale and layout” settings group and select either portrait or landscape monitor mode. The choice should match your monitor’s physical orientation.

Microsoft suggests that you can then make other changes to your display settings so that the text on the screen is big enough for you to read and looks clear. You can use the “Display resolution” drop-down list to select one of the resolution options available for your monitor. Keep in mind that higher resolutions mean that you get better visual quality, but the text and other screen elements look smaller. If you find that a problem, you’ll also find a drop-down list above the resolution settings where you can select a percentage to scale items such as text and apps.

Looking at Other Options

According to IONOS, you can try keyboard shortcuts to rotate your screen orientation and not change the other display settings. For example, using the “CTRL + ALT + Up Arrow” shortcut can get you to landscape mode, while “CTRL + ALT + Left Arrow” could get you to portrait mode. While using shortcuts, you want to consider the current orientation and adjust the arrow key used accordingly.

Monitor manufacturers might have their own software on your computer to control screen orientation. For example, Dell explains you can use the Dell Display Manager utility to set a Dell monitor in portrait mode.

The orientation of pictures that you take on your iPhone is determined by how you are holding the phone when you take the picture. It is very common to hold the phone in the portrait orientation, as it is much easier to use with one hand that way.

Fortunately this is something you can fix on your iPhone using one of the default picture editing tools on the device. I had to create a custom paper size of 11 x 14 as none of my printers support that size. I created the customs size with 2″ borders on all sizes. I was in Preview when creating the custom size with the 2″ borders.

The following is what I get when printing a 4:3 image to that paper size:

Old Toad, thanks. I accidentally hit the “this solved my question” I did not intend to do so. I wanted to reply to your questions.

My iPhoto is version 9.5.1 on my 15″ MacBookPro with Retina Display and 512 flash memory. I live in an old folks home and we have a photo club. I was trying to print out a 4:3 landscape photo oriented landscape on 11′ x 14″ paper with about a two inch white margin around all four sides of the picture on the fancy Epson Stylus Pro 3880 printer available for our club use in this institution. In the options for photo size in iPhoto, the fit and fill options do present landscape on landscape, but all other size options are smaller landscape photo on portrait oriented paper! I have by accident at times found a way to get what I want by using the custom option and changing photo size dimensions, but it is not intuitive and often I can not replicate the steps needed. I really think iPhoto should include a simple command somewhere to allow one to turn the desired photo from one orientation to the other (landscape and portrait) on the different paper options offered, all of which are shown as portrait only! A quick question and answer today, just because I see this being asked a lot, and finding (or not) finding the answer can be frustrated because there isn’t a simple “click of the button” solution.

In a nutshell, to rotate in Canva, you’ll have to change the dimensions of your design. Don’t worry, it’s a lot easier than it sounds, so stick with me.

The only tiny hurdle is, you need to have a Canva Pro membership in order to do so. But, you can grab a free trial here for 30 days if needed. I also like to mention that Fiverr and Upwork are great design resources if you have a project you’d just like to hand off to someone else like a freelancer who can complete it for you.

How to Rotate a Page in Canva to Landscape

To rotate a page in Canva to landscape view:

  1. Click “resize” towards the top left of the screen.
  2. Then, swap the currently listed width and height dimensions. Meaning, if you have an 8.5×11 canvas, you’ll make the width 11 inches and the height 8 inches.
  3. Last, click “resize” to resize your current design, or, click “copy and resize” to keep your original as is while creating a new design with the new dimensions.

As you can see, you must resize your design completely. Meaning, there isn’t a way to click a button and flip your canvas into a landscape orientation or into a vertical orientation.

Here is an example—let’s say I had this vertical, standard 8.5×11 eBook that I wanted to “rotate” to a landscape orientation.

How to turn a portrait image landscape

I’d go up to “resize” and enter 11 for the width (inches) and then 8.5 for the height. Of course, you can use any dimensions you’d like, and Canva also provides a number of sized options for you to transform designs into presentations, social media graphics, and more.

How to turn a portrait image landscape

After doing so, I’d be left with the output below. As you can see, you’d need to clean things up a little in order to get your previously perfectly-fitting elements stacked up the way you’d like in the new landscape orientatio,

The easiest way I’ve found of doing so is to just select all and then drag it all together to make larger. Some elements, like the binding in this case need to be moved to the left edge, etc.

How to turn a portrait image landscape

After a quick minute of rearranging, I’m left with the product below. Depending on the amount of elements you have, this step is could be a breeze or could require a bit of tinkering.

Meaning, if it was just a photo and a headline, it would be pretty easy, but a full page out of an eBook might take some time.

How to turn a portrait image landscape

All in all, rotating a page in Canva isn’t as easy as you might be used to doing in other programs, but I’m sure there is good reason for it.

My thinking is, you’re typically creating with a specific goal in mind with Canva. So, while having the option to flip my vertical eBook to be more landscape, Canva is guessing that you’re doing so in order to turn it into a presentation or a social media graphic, etc., so why not provide that option of choosing the output upfront.

As always, let me know if you have any questions or need any additional help!

Or, just pay $5 or so for someone on Fiverr (or find someone on Upwork) to create whatever it is you need for you. I’ve definitely swallowed my pride a few times and just hired a freelancer on Fiverr for quick turnaround, and often receiving something better than I could have done myself.
