Although if you ask around, anyone will say that if you’re using the Office 365 apps, then you’re running the most up-to-date version of Office that Microsoft has to offer, you may still be missing out on new features and improvements if your device hasn’t received the latest update.
Microsoft updates its Office apps on a regular basis, and even though updates should download and install automatically, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll receive updates as soon as they become available. Also, if it happens that the automatic update service has been disabled, there’s no way for your device to grab those new fixes and improvements.
Fortunately, whether you’re using an Office 365 subscription or the one-time purchase version of the apps, such as Office 2019, you can make sure that your device is running the most up-to-date version with just a few clicks.
In this Windows 10 guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to manually install updates for Office apps. In addition, we’ll outline the steps to enable the update service is currently disabled, and the steps to make sure that you’re running the latest version whether you’re using Office 365 or Office 2019.
How to update Office apps on Windows 10
To update the suite of Office apps to the latest version, use these steps:
Note: The interface may look a slightly different depending on the version of Office that you’re running, but the steps are the same.
- Open an Office app. For example, Word.
- Create a new blank document.
- Click on File.
- Click on Account.
- On the right side, click the Update Options menu.
Click the Update Now option.
Once you’ve completed the steps, Office will download and install any available update for your apps.
Enabling updates for Office
If you don’t see the option to update Office, use these steps to enable the service:
- Open an Office app. For example, Word.
- Create a new blank document.
- Click on File.
- Click on Account.
- On the right side, click the Update Options menu.
Click the Enable updates option.
After completing the steps, use the above steps to check, download, and install updates.
Checking the latest version of Office
To make sure that you’re running the latest version of Office, use these steps:
- Open an Office app, such as Word.
- Create a new blank document.
- Click on File.
- Click on Account.
On the right side, check the version information under About Word.
If you have an Office 365 Personal or Home subscription, the version number of your installation should match the number in this Office support website to confirm that you’re using the latest release.
In the case that you’re using Office 365 ProPlus (commercial), the version number of your installation should match the number in this Office support website. However, the number will be different depending on the release channel that you’re using, which can include “Monthly,” “Semi-Annual (Targeted),” or “Semi-Annual.” (The channel information is also specified in the “About Word” section of the app.)
If you’re using Office 2019 (the one-time purchase option), the version number of your installation should match the number in this Office support website. (The information, should be under “Retail versions of Office 2019.”)
You can use these steps to update apps available through Office 365, Office 2019, 2016, and older versions. The only difference is that updating Office 365 apps will sometimes include new features and significant improvements along with security patches, while updates for the standalone version of Office (2019, 2016, 2013) will only include security and maintenance fixes.

If you currently have a subscription to Office 365, you’ll be pleased to know you can upgrade to Office 2016 right now in just a matter of a few minutes. Today we’ll quickly show you how to do that on a Windows PC and Apple Mac.
Office 2016 is a much welcome upgrade for any existing Office installation, particularly for Mac users who’ve been suffering under the rather awful Office 2011 with its ugly, clunky interface. Office 2016 brings welcome uniformity by making the Mac version nearly identical to the Windows version.
You can easily update your existing Windows installation but all that will do is give you the latest version. So if you’re running Office 2013, you’ll get the latest stable version of 2013.
To upgrade, you will need to use the Office website and sign in with your Microsoft account.
Once signed in, you’ll simply need to click the area under “Install” where it says “New: Office 2016 is now available.”
Next, click the “Install” button on the resulting page.
Click the setup executable, either from your browser or in your downloads folder.
User Account Control should pop up to ask you if you want the installer app to make changes to your computer. Click “Yes” to continue and the installer should take care of the rest.
The upgrade process on the Mac is similar in that you will follow the same procedure – go to the Office website, click on the area where is says Office 2016 is available, and then click “Install” to download the .pkg file.
Double-click on the .pkg file to start the installer, which will be much different from the Windows installer.
Nevertheless, simply click through the prompts to upgrade your installation. Note, however, if you’re intending to upgrade from Office 2011, which is pretty terrible and thus you should, it’s best advised to uninstall that first before proceeding with the new Mac version.
Sadly, that Office for Mac version doesn’t have an uninstaller such as you would find on Windows so you will need to uninstall it manually. Luckily, you can follow our guide, complete with screenshots, to help you with that process.
We hope this article was helpful in showing you how easy and straightforward upgrading to Microsoft Office 2016 is. If you have any questions or comments you would like to contribute, please leave them in our discussion forum.

Your options to upgrade Office are different depending on the type of Office product you currently have.
If your current version is non-subscription product, see below. If you have a subscription, select the Microsoft 365 tab below.
Tip: Not sure of your current version? See What version of Office am I using?
If your current version of Office is a one-time purchase (non-subscription) version of Office such as Office Home & Student or Office Home & Business, to upgrade, you need to buy the latest version. You can choose to purchase a Microsoft 365 subscription or the newest one-time purchase version.
When you’re ready to install your new product, see the section below, I’m ready to install Office and follow the upgrade recommendations.
How do I buy the latest version?
Buy a Microsoft 365 subscription
Purchasing Microsoft 365 is your best option. You’ll always have the latest features, security updates, and other improvements. You get Office’s cloud connected features to help you maximize productivity across your devices including 1TB of OneDrive storage, extra features with Office mobile apps, Skype minutes, the option to install Office across your devices, and access to support. Choose between Microsoft 365 Personal (for one person) or Microsoft 365 Family (which you can share with your family).
Buy a one-time purchase version of Office 2021
Get the newest non-subscription version of Office such as Office Home & Student 2021 or Office Home & Business 2021.
You can only install these versions of Office on one device. You’ll get security updates and fixes during the supported period, but you won’t receive new features or any of the other Microsoft 365 benefits.
See the next section for a list of upgrade recommendations.
I have the latest version and I’m ready to install it
Before installing the latest version of Office read through the following recommendations first.
Upgrade recommendations
Make sure your computer meets the system requirements for the newest version of Office.
In most cases when you run the Microsoft Office Setup program on a computer with an earlier version of Office installed, the earlier version is removed. However, there are instances when an uninstall is necessary, such as if you run into errors or problems during installation.
If you uninstall Office before installing the new version, your Office files won’t be deleted, but if your version of Office includes Outlook you may want to back up your Outlook data files. See Find and transfer Outlook data files from one computer to another.
We recommend only running one version of Office on a PC, but if you need to run Office side-by-side, see which versions are compatible in Install and use different versions of Office on the same PC.
You may need to remove older Office licenses after installing the latest version of Office on your Mac, even if you uninstalled the older version first. See How to remove Office license files on a Mac.
Ready to install
When you’re ready to install the latest version (either a subscription or non-subscription version of Office), follow the steps in Download and install or reinstall Office on a PC or Mac.
After the installation completes, your new version of Office should update automatically, or you might get a notification an update is ready to apply. (You also have the option to manually check for and apply updates.)
Microsoft 365 for home subscription
If you have an Microsoft 365 Family or Microsoft 365 Personal subscription, you already have the most current version of Office at no additional cost and should already receive the latest features to your Office apps. See What’s new in Microsoft 365 to learn more about the newest features.
If you don’t see these features, you may not have received the latest updates. Depending on your operating system, check for Office updates for PC or Office updates for Mac.
To switch between subscriptions, such as switching from Microsoft 365 Personal to Microsoft 365 Family, see Switch to a different Microsoft 365 subscription.
Microsoft 365 for business subscription
If your Microsoft 365 for business subscription is associated with your work or school email account (these versions of Office are usually licensed to you through your work or school), you have the latest version of Office as long as you keep it up-to-date. Depending on your operating system, check for Office updates for PC or Office updates for Mac.
If you don’t see some of the newer features in your app, you might not have received the update yet or your Microsoft 365 admin restricts Office updates until the features can tested with other programs and add-ins in your organization. Learn more about how Office updates are rolled out in When do I get the newest features in Microsoft 365.
For Microsoft 365 admins only If users in your organization are still on older versions of the Office desktop apps, learn how to upgrade your users to the latest Office client.
Important: On January 14, 2020 support for Windows 7 ended. If you installed Microsoft 365 on a computer running Windows 7, you won’t receive feature updates to your Office apps after this date. Learn more about what this means for you in Windows 7 end of support and Office.
Note: If you can’t open an app to check your installation type, try the more common Click-to-Run or MSI uninstall steps first.

All the people who possess a subscription for the Office 365 get the opportunity to upgrade to the latest Microsoft Office 2016 within a few minutes. Office 2011 has been an awful experience especially for the Mac users with not so happening interface. But Microsoft has learnt a lot from it and Office 2016 comes loaded with new features and enhanced interface which aims at providing at par and identical experience to Mac users which is found on Windows version. Here is simple guide that will allow you to understand steps needed for successfully upgrading to the Office 2016 on both Windows and Mac computers.
How To Install Office 2016 On Windows
In order to upgrade to Office 2016 you will need to visit the Office website and sign in to the Microsoft account.
After signing, you will need to click around the area just below the Install where it is written ‘New: Office 2016 is now available’.
Very soon, a new page will appear on the screen and you are just need to give a click on the ‘Install’ button.
Once you had clicked on ‘install’ a setup file will be downloaded and you should click on this executable file either from the browser itself or by locating it in the ‘downloads’ folder.
Windows pop up for User Account Control will appear on the screen asking whether you want to allow the installer app to make changes on the system or not. Just give a click on ‘Yes’ and your installer will start downloading the Office 2016.
How To Install Office 2016 On Mac
Mac users have to follow the same path for upgrading to the Office 2016. First go to the Office website, sign in with your Microsoft account and then click on the ‘install area’. Now you will find yourself on the resulting page and simply locate the area where it says ‘Office 2016 is available’ and give a click ‘Install’ to the download the .pkg file.
Now give a double click on the .pkg file in order to start the installer which will bring very different kind of installer usually seen on the Windows installer.
Once the installation setup simply follow up with the prompts by carefully clicking on the ‘continue’. The process of upgrading from the Office 2013 to Office 2016 is extremely swift and quite easier but if a Mac user is upgrading from the age old Office 2011 to the Office 2016 then it will take quite a long time. Therefore it will be better to first uninstall the Office 2011 version and settle for directly installing the Office 2016 rather than upgrading. Another sad fact for the Mac users is that the Office version for Mac doesn’t come with the uninstaller therefore Office has to un-installed manually.
Microsoft Office 2016 offers a new range of features which is aimed at increasing the productivity and it even makes the sharing of documents and files much easier than before. Microsoft had done some remarkable work at improving the user interface and making it much better than earlier versions.
When you turn on automatic updating for Windows through Microsoft Update, you’ll also get Office updates for earlier versions of Office, such as Office 2010 or for Office volume license installs. Choose your version of Windows below to turn on automatic updates:
Tip: For most versions of Office, you can enable automatic updates or get updates manually within an Office application. For more information, go to Install Office updates. For information about Office for Mac updates, go to Check for Office for Mac updates automatically.
Choose your version of Windows:

We hope that this article was helpful for Microsoft Office 2016 free download and for the users who were willing to upgrade to office 2016. If you are having any problems during Microsoft Office 2016 free download or install, you can use the comments section to clear the doubts. Let us know using the comments section below – How was your experience with Microsoft Office 2016?
Have you heard the exciting news? Office 2016 is now passing Google Apps providing real-time co-authoring in their desktop apps! Read more about it in this great write-up from The Verge. Excited as I was, I immediately began the download process and waited “in just a moment” (more like couple hours) for the download to complete. It finished, installed and kept all my previous settings, awesome! BUT (there is always a “but”, right?) I got stuck with a stupid activation screen request. That is where this article comes in. In this article, I will walk through the upgrade process and how we (thanks to Microsoft support) fixed the activation error. Let me set the stage first:
- OS: Windows 10 Pro (current PUBLIC release)
- Current Office installed: Office 2013, 15.0.4753.1003
- Type of Licensing: Office 365 Home
To start, we need actually to download and upgrade our office application. You can see the official KB here from Office.com. The upgrade is not automatic which I think disappointing, why not drive Office updates through the Windows Update mechanism? Instead, you need to go to your My Account in Office.com and then select Install to initiate the upgrade process.
Step 1: Select My Account
Step 2: Login if not already (no visual as I am already logged in)
Step 3: Select Install
Step 3: Select Install again. NOTE: this will install the 32-bit English version. If you want the 64-bit or different language, make sure you select Language and install options to change up options. I will not go further on this route b in visuals but when you click on it, you can select a language. If you REALLY want 64-bit, then click another link Additional install options to choose 64-bit.
Step 4: A download will kick off which is the installation shell, about 2MB in size. When finished the download, launch it, and full download and installation will begin. DO NOT BELIEVE the “in just a moment” message, it took hours for mine to download and install but you can still use Office during this process.
Step 5: When done it will let you know in a dialog (sorry forgot to get a screenshot 😦 )
Woohoo, all installed and ready to go, or so I thought. Excitedly I opened Word and immediately received a prompt: (sorry image below is not from my computer, grabbed from Google Images, but only difference is software is just Office 365, not Office 365 ProPlus)
When I say Next, it failed with message
If I click cancel (many times though) the window goes away, and I can use the application, but it always comes back randomly.
I did some quick searching on Web and could not find other reports, so I turned to Microsoft Chat Support. After trying a couple things, they fixed it! I asked him what was actually issue and he only said “when you upgrade to 2016 there are just some few settings that has changed”, followed by “The settings are on the Windows 10, so we just changed it”.
Weird…. anyway, it is fixed 🙂
So here is what he changed using remote access, maybe someone more technically sound can help clarify what is going on:
In Regedit:
HKEY_Local_Machine -> Software -> Microsoft -> Windows -> CurrentVersion -> Policies -> ActiveDesktop
- Changed key NoAddingComponents from 1 to 0
HKEY_Local_Machine -> Software -> Microsoft -> Windows -> CurrentVersion -> Policies -> Explorer
- Changed key NoActiveDesktop from 1 to 0
- Changed key NoActiveDesktopChanges from 1 to 0
In Command Prompt, run the following commands
- net localgroup Adminisrators localservice /add
- should see message “The command completed successfully”
- should see message “The command completed successfully”
- again this failed, with message “The following command was not found: int reset resetlog.txt”
- Receive series of messages as shown below
We then restarted the computer.
After Restart, the support technician relaunched the Office application Word 2016 BUT as Run as Administrator. This time, the activation prompt does not appear.
So there you have it. That is how we solved the activation error in my case. Again, I am not clear what the registry and CMD changes did, or maybe it all was fixed by simply running the application as Administrator for the first time. I suggest if you see the same issue, try to run one of the Office applications first as an Administrator –
Sound off in comments below as to your experience in the Office 2016 upgrade!
Be aware that the process can take 20 minutes or more. You may be required to restart your computer when done.
Before you start the installation, do the following preparatory steps:Prepare
