Yesterday I talked about using Google Forms and Google Slides for exit or entry tickets. One addition I like is adding a timer to Google slides in the form of a countdown timer.

By adding a timer the students and you get a sense of completion for the current task or project. Without the timer it might be harder to refocus the class and move on. The timer also works well when you are presenting to the class and would like the students to discuss a particular question or slide. By adding a timer to Google Slides, the students will get a sense of how much time they have left and be able to focus and transition on to other tasks easier.

I’ve also put together a video showing you the steps for adding a timer to Google slides.

It’s relatively easy. In Google Slides, go to Insert -> Video. In the search, enter the length of the timer you want, like 4 minute timer. Luckily for us, there are tons of timer movies already on Youtube. Be sure to check the timer’s ending, some of them may be inappropriate for school, such as timers that depict a bomb.

Resize the video and place it in the corner of your slide. When presenting, click it to start the timer. This technique could be used for other parts of a presentation, for example, if you wanted the group to discuss an item, you could have a 10 minute time on the slide.

I resize the timer to fit on part of the slide. The remaining portion of the slide shows the questions that I would like the students to be discussing or answering at the moment. Without adding a timer to Google Slides I would be required to juggle multiple windows or have a separate timer that may not be visible to the students. With the timer embedded on the slide I don’t interrupt the flow of class.

However, by changing the start option for each effect, you can have effects that automatically play after the previous effect or with the previous effect.

Fire up your browser, head to Google Slides, open a presentation, or upload an existing PowerPoint presentation.

Select a slide and, from the menu bar, click Slide > Change Transition.

You can create visual effects when you add animations to text, images, and other objects from the Transitions menu as well.

Click on an object you want to animate and then click “Add Animation.”

Choose the type of animation, start condition, and the speed at which the animation will occur. Tick the box next to “By Paragraph” to animate lists one line at a time.

How to use google slides animated transitions

How can you bring your Google Slides presentation to life and engross your audience further? The answer is simple: animation! When used well, animation is a great tool, helping to capture your audience’s attention and consequently strengthening your message. Though Google Slides animation features aren’t incredibly wide ranging, we’re going to show you how to make the most of what’s there to work with.

Animation can build up processes step by step, keeping the audience connected throughout. It can compare before and afters and also show movement. That’s why animation – when used to communicate meaning – is so important. You wouldn’t want to pose a question and reveal the answer at the same time. It is crucial to time these elements to the presenter’s talk track, allowing the audience to interact with information in a more meaningful way.

With Google Slides animation can be applied to text, shapes, objects, and slides. Sometimes a simple transition or fade in can make a world of difference – allowing you to pace the flow of information or communicate processes and changes more effectively. It is also important to remember to not overpower your message with too many animations, make sure they are consistent and keep it to a minimum. Remember less is more.

We’re going to explain how to add animation to Google Slides and show you five ways to make the most of its animation features. Now, let’s get to it!

Google Slides Transitions

Transitions are animations added in between slides to help move smoothly between different pieces of content. Just like in PowerPoint, Google Slides allows you to add animations when you transition from one slide to another. Unlike in PowerPoint, these transitions are stored alongside the animations.

How to add a transition: Open a presentation in Google Slides. Click the slide you want to add a transition to. Then click Insert > Animation. Select a transition from the scroll down. If you want to apply the transition to every slide, just click on the Apply to all slides button.

If you change your mind and decide you want to remove the transition, here is how you do it: Go to Insert on the menu, then scroll down to Animation. The animation pane will open on the right of the slide. Click Transition and then No transition.

With this in mind, let’s look at two ways you can use transitions in Google Slides.

1. Dissolve

As seen on the slide below, a Dissolve transition in between slides gives your presentation better flow and to allow your audience a second to breathe and take the information in, before moving on to the next topic.

2. Slide from the left

You can also transition from slide to slide using a Slide from the left transition. In the example below we present important stats – by using the transition we can move along as if using the motion path animation found in PowerPoint. It’s a simple and effective way of showing progression.

Right, now that we’ve covered transitions, let’s talk about the more traditional animations in Google Slides. These apply to individual shapes, text, or objects on the slide.

How to add an animation: Open a presentation in Google Slides. Click the text or image you want to animate. Then click Insert > Animation. Click on Select an object to animate, scroll down and choose the animation you want to use. Then on the scroll underneath select whether you want your object to animate On click, After previous or With previous.

There’s three animation features that we really like to use, and we’ll show you how to use them.

3. Fly in from Left to Right

This Google Slides animation allows you to bring in objects or text boxes one by one, automatically or with clicks. By setting objects to animate on clicks, you can to reveal each object as you discuss it, maintaining your audience’s focus on the topic. Without animations to pace the flow, your audience will likely read all of the content in one go, ignoring what you’re saying as the presenter and reaching the conclusion ahead of time.

4. Fade in

Fade in is a very popular Google Slides animation as it can serve many different purposes. By bringing objects in with a fade, you can direct the audience’s attention to the item being discussed and you avoid overwhelming them with too many visuals all at once. It is very effective with bullet points, process items, or any shapes you want to present in a particular order.

In the example below we show the background photo of the Christ the Redeemer. It is both a beautiful and a relevant landscape that will engage the audience, in this case the travel industry. Having it take up the entire slide is an effective way to draw the audience in. After setting the scene we can then fade in the text content for the presenter to discuss.

5. Fly in from bottom

This Google Slides animation is very useful if your presentation includes technical information, as it allows you to break up the data with eye catching motions, particularly in graphs. In our example below, we used it to add some movement to our chart, bringing one value at a time, helping the audience study the numbers one at a time. We’ve also used a white rectangle to mask the fly in below the X axis. So those are our five ways to use animation in Google Slides: two awesome transitions, and three useful animations! As you can see, it’s not difficult to use the Google Slides animation features to make your presentation more compelling and engaging. Be sure to consider the purpose and timing of your animations: use them to pace the flow of information and keep your audience following your narrative. Google Slides is a super useful teaching tool that’s totally free. In an age of want-it-now impatience, however, sometimes clicking through Slides can be a bit much for students. One way to speak in their digital language while remaining concise and getting your point across is to use an animated GIF. So converting your Google Slides show into an animated GIF is the quickest way to do this and can be done for free.

An animated GIF is essentially an image file, or more accurately a video, which shows a selection of images, like a slide show, in quick succession and on repeat. Crucially, this can be opened on pretty much any device, including smartphones, tablets, and laptops. It’s also condensed in size, making it ideal for sharing quickly and easily in emails and beyond.

One tool which allows you to convert a Google Slides document into an animated GIF, for free, is Tall Tweets, created by the awesome Amit Agarwal.

With Tall Tweets you can import a Google Slideshow, set the duration for each slide (as well as some other options), and then create and download an animated GIF version of your slideshow. This can be used with many Google Slides projects to export the final product.

Many tools to make animated GIFs are available, but it is always helpful to find one that is free and super easy to use. See below for detailed directions on how to use this great tool.

Create Your Google Slideshow

First you need to finish creating the Google Slideshow that you want to convert into an animated GIF. For helpful tips on making the slideshow, check out our Best Student Templates for Google Docs, Slides, Sheets and Drawings.

A key factor to keep in mind is that you may want some slides to last longer, and some to be shorter, when playing as a GIF later. Although you can’t make a specific slide last longer, you can make it look like it does. One way to do this is to make multiple copies of the slide, without making any changes to it, so it looks like the scene is lasting longer. Here’s exactly how to do that.

  • Select the slide you want to last longer.
  • Make a copy of the slide by clicking “Slide” and “Duplicate slide”, or copy and paste the slide, or press “Ctrl” and “D” (for duplicate).
  • Repeat this multiple times to make 5 or 10 copies of the slide (for example).

Later when the slideshow gets converted into a GIF, it will look like the slideshow has paused on this slide for longer. Tall Tweets has a limit of 100 slides when creating the animated GIF, so be sure your slideshow does not exceed that amount.

Convert Google Slides with Tall Tweets

Now you can convert your Google Slideshow into an animated GIF at the Tall Tweets website. Yup, you’ll need to head over there to have you Google Slides offering uploaded to convert and download as a GIF. This is a simple enough process, but for clarity, these are the steps.

  • Go to Tall Tweets.
  • Click the “Select Presentation” button.
  • Browse your Google Drive to find and select the slideshow you want to convert.
  • The site will now make a copy of each slide. This can take a while depending on how many slides are in your presentation.
  • When the slides have all been loaded you can now enter your settings.

GIF Image Width (in pixels)

For this, enter how large you want your animated GIF to be. The wider the GIF, the larger the file size will be. Very large GIFs will take longer to load on websites, and some services have limits on how large of a GIF you can post. For example the maximum file size for an animated GIF on Twitter is 5MB on mobile and 15MB on web.

Slide Duration (in seconds)

For this part enter a number for how long each slide should last. For some slideshow (such as comic strips or eBooks) you will want the slides to last long enough for people to read the content. However, for stop-motion animation, you may want the slides to move much quicker, such as 0.1 or 0.25 seconds per slide.

Enable your slides to advance automatically. Moreover, you can create some really fun and unique transitions as a first step.

2. Choose auto-advance slides (web-only)

Choose the option to Auto-Advance Slides. It allows you to set the timing to play between slides. However, it only works if you are presenting over the Web.

3. Demo

You can share the presentation URL. Or embed it into your website.

Presentation programs have come a long way since their invention in 1981. In the early days, these programs used slide projectors to show presentation slides.

Later in the 1990s, LCD screens became commonplace. Microsoft’s PowerPoint presentation program became a standard feature in all new computers, including Mac and PC (Windows).

Google Slides, meanwhile, is a relatively new solution offered by Google. It was first released in 2006 as part of the Google Drive package.

This allows users with Google accounts to easily create, edit and share presentations online. Users are also able to collaborate with one another in real-time, minimizing the need for lengthy file transfers.

One exciting set of functions within the Google Slides program is the Animations and Transitions. This set of functions allows you to customize the type of animation and transition you get between slides. Needless to say, automatic slide transitions are a major part of this functionality.

How to Make Slides Advance Automatically in Google Slides?

Making slide transitions in Google Slides is easy. There are two main processes for adding slide transitions.

If you have not done it before, see the walkthroughs below and you will be able to learn it quickly!

1. Customizing Transitions for Each Slide

This process will not enable your slides to advance automatically. However, you can create some really fun and unique transitions as a first step!

  • First, create your slides in Google Slides

  • Next, select the first slide
  • Click the tab labeled Slide at the top, then Change transition.

A column will appear to the right side of your screen.

  • Under the dropdown menu that says No transition, click to open the other options

You should see a list of transition types, including Fade, Slide from Right, Slide from Left, Flip, Cube, and Gallery.

  • Select your preferred transition type

You should now see a slider with the speed settings: Slow, Medium, and Fast. Drag the slider to your preferred speed setting.

* Notice the button “Apply to all slides”? Click this button if you wish to have the same transition for all your slides.

If you want to have different transition types for different slides, simply repeat the process with each slide. Right-click on one slide at a time to edit its transition type. Just take care not to click “Apply to all slides” by mistake!

2. Choosing “Auto-Advance Slides” (Web Presentations Only)

This process entails choosing the option to Auto-Advance Slides. It allows you to set the timing to play between slides. However, it only works if you are presenting over the Web.

  • First, click on the File menu
  • Select Publish to the web, then Auto-advance slides

Choose the timing for the pause in between slides. Also, remember to select the option Starting the slideshow as soon as the player loads for auto-start. If you want the slideshow to loop, be sure to check the option Restart the slideshow after the last slide.

You will see a link for sharing this presentation. You could also click on the “Embed” tab if you wish to copy the presentation’s custom HTML code to a website.

When you open the presentation’s link, make sure to press the “Play” button so that the slides will move automatically.

That’s it for automatic slide transitions – as you can see, Google Slides is a really user-friendly program!

We recommend sharing this view with the class, either on a big screen or on a video call. On the other hand, if you want students to play the videos or GIFs on their own screen, please add them to a Website slide – the Power-Up extension is not needed in this case!

    Only you, the teacher/presenter, need to install the Power-Up extension on your Chrome browser. Students do not need to install it, and it works automatically for any student who joins your Sessions! If you are a Google administrator and want to install the extension for all users, click here. If you’re installing the Power-Up for yourself, follow these steps:

    1. Go to the Google Chrome Web Store.
    2. Click Install via Chrome Store.
    3. In the Google Chrome Web S​tore, click Add to Chrome.
    4. Click Add extension.
    5. Voilà! When the extension is installed successfully, you will see the logo in your Chrome browser. Each time you present a Pear Deck with the Pear Deck for Google Slides Add-on, your videos, animations, and GIFs will play at full resolution (see the specifics in the section above). You can click on the Extensions menu to see and manage your extensions:

    • Click Start Lesson in the Pear Deck for Google Slides Add-on sidebar to start a new Session (the Power-Up only works when presenting from this sidebar).How to use google slides animated transitions
    • When prompted, be sure to choose Instructor-Paced Mode (the Power-Up only operates in this mode). How to use google slides animated transitions
    • Your Live Session begins. The Projector View opens with the Join Instructions displayed.How to use google slides animated transitions
    • Students must join the Session to respond to your interactive questions and see your slides. (click here to learn more about running your Instructor-Paced Session).
      • Please note that you can only trigger Google Slides animations and videos on this Projector View.
      • The extension only works on one presentation, per Deck, at a time. You can certainly present additional Sessions with the same or a different Deck, and your Pear Deck interactive slides will work as always – but the animations, GIFs, and videos on those slides will be static images. To present an additional Session without the extension enabled on it, go to your Pear Deck Home, open your file under Present a File from Drive or your Sessions menu, and present from there.

      Word to the wise

      Powering up is pretty cool, but rest assured that your Pear Deck for Google Slides presentations will work exactly as they always have even if you never install the extension. The interactivity and student engagement you know and love works just as always; no animations needed.

      There’s a strong case to be made for avoiding information overload. As our own Slide Doctor advises us, visual content should be a delightful and helpful counterpart to your valuable lesson! So keep it simple and easy to scan, and keep those cat GIFs to a minimum!

      Google Slides works like Microsoft PowerPoint. Google Slides helps us with all the work related to making presentations. Google Slides is an internet-based presentation app. Which is an important part of the Google Suite along with Google Docs and Google Sheets. Through this, editing, creating, preparing notes, group discussions, updating slides, etc. can be done easily online. Furthermore, It is also helpful in adding animation to the presentation and giving transitions in the slide. It is available online for free for both business and personal users. And easily accessible through Google Drive. However, you need to have a Gmail account to use Google Slides.

      How to use Google Slides?

      Following are the simple steps to use Google slides to make a presentation.

      Step 1. First of all, open your Google account and tap on the Google app option in the top right corner. After this, the list of Google apps will be displayed in front of you.

      Step 2. Now tap on the Google Slides option and open the Google Slides window. After this, you will see the option of the blank document on your screen. Tap on this option and open a new document screen. Here you will get a blank slide on the screen to create a presentation and the following ten menus will be displayed on the menu bar in which file menu, view menu, insert menu, format menu, slides menu, arrange menu, tools menu, add ons, help menu are included.

      Google Slides can easily be embedded in any website by using the code provided in the File > Publish to the web… menu.

      By default, there’s a set of controls at the bottom of an embedded Slides presentation that diminishes the website animation effect. The controls provide multiple options including downloading the Slides as a PDF or PPTX file.

      However, the controls can be hidden with a simple div tag. We found some suggestions for div tag specifics in this Google Docs Help Forum post.

      With embeds of live Google Slides presentations, any changes you make to the slides themselves or to transition settings will immediately update on your website. That means you can edit some of your website content simply by making changes to Google Slides.

      Here are four ways you can use Google Slides to add animation to your website.

      Loop a Standard Google Slides Presentation

      We used HubSpot’s royalty free photos to add a high resolution image background to every slide in the below presentation. We also used a technique that we described in this blog post to overlay translucent rectangles and circles along with text.

      The following is the text in WordPress that we used to display the Google Slides presentation that you see right below it. The bolded part are instructions to start automatically, loop the presentation and advance to the next slide every five seconds.

      Setting the right width and height in the div tag and in the embed code involved some trial and error.

      Loop Customer Testimonials

      For this embed, in Google Slides, we went to File > Page Setup… > Custom and set the dimension to 960 x 240 pixels.

      We then went to Slide > Change Transition… and applied Gallery to all slides. We set the speed to Medium.

      Note that we could not completely eliminate the black border in WordPress. If you discover a way to do this, please comment below.

      Slide Customer Logos

      This is a variation of the Loop Customer Testimonials above, with two transition changes.

      Under Slide > Change Transition… we applied Slide from left to all slides. We set the speed to half way between Medium and Fast.

      These are not actually our customers — just some logos that we added to Google Slides.

      Add Motion to a Banner Call to Action

      You can test adding some subtle animation to an end-of-post banner call to action to see if that increases conversions. We say “subtle”, as too much animation might cause the opposite of the desired effect.

      We used three slides. The only difference among the slides is the number of “>” characters to the right of the button text.

      Since it’s difficult to completely eliminate the black border, the cheat we used was to set a black background on the CTA slides. Incidentally, the GET STARTED button is active. We added the same link to the button on each of the three slides.
