What is Smart Switch?

Smart Switch is Samsung’s tool for quickly and easily transitioning from an old phone—be it Android, Windows Phone (haha), or even an iPhone. It helps users bring all their important data from an old phone to their new Galaxy handset. It’s available as an Android app for direct Android-to-Android transfers, but the PC or Mac app is more fully featured.

How to use samsung smart switch to update your galaxy phone

For example, you can use it as a backup tool for a Galaxy handset, offering the option to back up all important data from the phone to a PC. It also has an option to encrypt said data, keeping it safe and secure.

But Smart Switch for PC or Mac also offers a quick and easy way to update your Galaxy handset. While it doesn’t necessarily bypass carrier approval or some such to get you updated quicker, it does offer a way to skip the line when you know your carrier is pushing an update to your handset and you don’t have it yet.

How to use samsung smart switch to update your galaxy phone

We all have plenty to complain about when it comes to software updates landing on our Samsung phones. Right now Samsung’s completing its rollout of Android 10 with One UI 2. Sometimes it isn’t Samsung’s fault that you don’t yet have the latest update — issues with carriers and even the current software on your phone can prevent your phone from downloading an update even when it’s actually “available” to your phone model. That’s where Samsung’s desktop software, Smart Switch, comes in. Here’s how it works.

Phones that can update with Smart Switch

  • Amazon: Samsung Galaxy S20 ($1,000)
  • Amazon: Samsung Galaxy Note 10 ($930)
  • Amazon: Samsung Galaxy S10 ($750)
  • Amazon: Samsung Galaxy Note 9 ($1000)
  • Amazon: Samsung Galaxy S9 ($480)
  • Amazon: Samsung Galaxy Note 8 ($430)
  • Amazon: Samsung Galaxy S8 ($360)
  • Samsung Galaxy S II – Galaxy S7

How to manually update your Samsung phone using Smart Switch

  1. Go to Samsung’s Smart Switch website and download for Windows or macOS.
  2. Install and open Smart Switch on your computer and connect your phone via its USB cable.
  1. If Smart Switch doesn’t recognize the phone, click the menu in Smart Switch and click Reinstall device driver then restart.
  2. After a few moments, your phone will be recognized by Smart Switch and you’ll see several options on the main screen for backing up and restoring. You do not need to back up or restore your phone to initiate an update.
  3. A software check is performed when you plug in, and Smart Switch will list your current software details. If there is a software update available for your phone, you’ll be notified on the main screen.
  4. The phone will reboot, and the process will take roughly 10 minutes.
  5. When a new software version is available for your phone, Smart Switch will download it and then apply the next time you plug your device in.

To be clear, this isn’t going to force an update onto your phone that Samsung has yet to release. Unless Samsung and your carrier (where applicable) have signed off on and released an update for your exact phone, there’s no way to get it.

Hooking up to Smart Switch can get you an update quicker, though, in cases where your carrier is slowly rolling out an update over the air (OTA) or the update checker on your phone for whatever reason won’t download an update. If you’re impatient, it’s absolutely worth having this tool at the ready.

In the past, updating a rooted Samsung Galaxy device has always involved the complicated process of downloading the proper firmware for your variant, installing device drivers, then sideloading the update with Odin.

Luckily, though, with the release of the Galaxy S6, Samsung has debuted a new software for Windows and Mac that makes updating a breeze—even if you’re rooted. This new software, called Smart Switch, serves as a more robust version of its smartphone app counterpart, and allows you to backup, restore, and update your Galaxy S6 in a few simple clicks.

Step 1: Prepare Your Phone

To get started, make sure your phone is at least halfway charged, because you don’t want to lose power in the middle of an update. Beyond that, have your phone powered on and booted up, then connect it to your computer with a USB data cable.

It should be noted that, while you won’t lose any data by updating your device, you will indeed lose root if you were previously rooted. As of right now, developers are still working out the kinks for rooting Android 5.1.1 on the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, so you may not be able to re-root for a little while.

Step 2: Install Smart Switch for Mac or PC

Next up, from your PC or Mac, click one of the following links to download the Smart Switch desktop program:

  • Smart Switch for Windows
  • Smart Switch for Mac

Once the file has finished downloading, go ahead and launch it, then follow the prompts to get Smart Switch installed on your computer.

How to use samsung smart switch to update your galaxy phone

Step 3: Back Up Your Existing Data

Once installed, Smart Switch should automatically recognize your device type and download all corresponding drivers without any further interaction from you. This means that as soon as you finish with the setup wizard, you’re ready to use Smart Switch.

One of the first things you should do is create a backup of your existing firmware, data, and apps. To do that, just click the “Backup” button near the bottom of the screen, then wait about 10 minutes for the process to complete. Should you ever need to restore this backup, the process is equally simple—just click the “Restore” button, then select the backup you made, and Smart Switch will handle the rest.

How to use samsung smart switch to update your galaxy phone

Step 4: Update Your Firmware

If there is an available firmware update for your device, Smart Switch will inform you of this with a message near the top of the screen. Just click the “Update” button directly to the right of this message to begin the update process—even if you’re rooted.

How to use samsung smart switch to update your galaxy phone

From here, you’ll be asked to confirm your choice, so click “Update” again on the subsequent popup.

How to use samsung smart switch to update your galaxy phone

Next up, you’ll get a message detailing the update process. While it does say that “a rooted device may cause updates to fail,” the vast majority of rooted users have reported that Smart Switch updated their devices successfully, and I’ve personally done this with two rooted Galaxy S6 phones myself. Even still, if the update were to fail due to root, you’d just be right back where you started on your old firmware, so there’s not much to lose in trying.

How to use samsung smart switch to update your galaxy phone

After clicking “OK” on the previous message, Smart Switch will start the process of updating your phone’s firmware. While this is happening, do not touch or interact with your phone at all.

How to use samsung smart switch to update your galaxy phone

Depending on your computer, the update process may take up to 30 minutes, but when it’s done, you’ll get a confirmation dialog. As it says, you should disconnect and reconnect the USB cable at this time.

How to use samsung smart switch to update your galaxy phone

Your phone will take longer than normal to boot back up, but once it does, you’ll be running the latest version of Android. After your phone has finished booting, it’s safe to disconnect the USB cable entirely.

In my opinion, Smart Switch is the easiest method for updating a rooted Android device that I’ve ever encountered. Would you agree? Let us know in the comment section below, or drop us a line on Android Hacks’ Facebook or Twitter, or Gadget Hacks’ Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.

Commentary: Samsung’s One UI 4 update brings user interface and privacy changes to Samsung devices that resemble certain iPhone features.

She was also previously a tech columnist for Time Magazine and got her start as a staff writer for Laptop Mag and Tom’s Guide.

Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones are getting a facelift that should make their software feel more seamless and more customizable. It might also feel familiar if you’re switching from an iPhone .

Samsung detailed its forthcoming One UI 4 software update during its annual developer conference on Tuesday, where it also outlined its strategy for the smart home , Tizen TVs and Bixby voice assistant. The new smartphone software has been available in beta since September, but the tech giant provided a detailed look at its new features during the conference’s opening keynote. The update will launch at the end of 2021 beginning with the Galaxy S21 series before rolling out to other Galaxy devices.

Design is a major focus in One UI 4. You’ll be able to match your phone’s system theme to your wallpaper, and certain actions like setting an alarm or using the device’s fingerprint sensor will trigger haptics and sounds. But several other features coming in the update feel very iPhone-inspired, especially the more consistent widgets and new privacy options. It’s another sign that the gap in features between iOS and Android is starting to get smaller as smartphones have matured over the last decade.

For instance, One UI 4’s widgets feature corners that are more rounded across the board, whether they’re made by Samsung or third parties.

Based on what we’ve seen in Samsung’s presentation, that looks a lot like the iPhone’s home screen widgets.

When it comes to customization, you’ll also be able to set your AR emoji as your profile photo for Samsung accounts. This is similar to the way iPhone owners can set their Memoji as their iMessage and Apple ID photo.

One of the biggest changes to come to the iPhone 11 in 2019 was the addition of QuickTake in the camera app. This feature lets you switch from photo to video mode more easily by just holding the shutter button and then dragging it to the right. Samsung device owners will get a similar shortcut when One UI 4 launches. The update will let you move from photo to video mode simply by dragging up from the camera shutter.

Here’s the demo Samsung showcased during its developer conference.

Samsung’s One UI 4 update will make it easier to switch from photo to video mode in the camera app, much like the iPhone.

And here’s the iPhone’s QuickTake feature.

One UI 4 will also help Samsung devices catch up to the iPhone in terms of privacy. Galaxy smartphone owners will be able to choose whether they want to share their precise or approximate location with apps, an option that Apple introduced last year in iOS 14.

Apple and Android device makers have been locked in a race to introduce new features and capabilities to their mobile devices first since the dawn of the smartphone. It’s a competition that will never have a straight answer, and the right choice for most people will largely come down to the operating system they’re most comfortable with.

But throughout the course of smartphone history, there are a few areas in which the iPhone has pulled ahead of Android and vice versa. The iPhone paved the way for the modern smartphone by popularizing touch-centric interaction on mobile devices while the industry remained fixated on tiny keyboards. In more recent years, Apple has generally been more forward-thinking when it comes to consumer privacy.

But Android device makers pioneered many aspects of today’s mobile user interface, offering staple features like widgets and quick-settings pulldown menus long before Apple did. Companies like Samsung also launched smartphones with larger screens years ahead of the iPhone 6 Plus launch in 2014. Now Samsung, Motorola and Microsoft are experimenting with foldable designs while Apple has yet to mention the possibility of a bendable iPhone .

Why your Android device won't update, and how to troubleshoot it

If your Android mobile device isn’t updating, there are a few possible explanations.

Work your way through the troubleshooting tips below to figure out why you might be missing out on updates.

Your network connection isn't strong enough

Android devices need to be connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data in order to successfully complete an update.

Check your wireless connection and try again.

Your device is too old

Certain Android devices that are several years old may no longer update because updates are no longer being created for those models.

For example, if you have a Samsung Galaxy phone from six years ago, your phone likely won’t receive updates due to the presence of the newer Galaxy S10 models.

In those cases, to update your system, you’ll have to buy a newer device.

Your device doesn't have enough battery power to complete an update

Since updates can take a long time to complete, many devices are required to have a certain amount of battery power before they can update. This is to ensure that the device won’t shut off before the update has completed.

Plugging your device into its charger until it’s fully charged and then trying to update should help.

Your device doesn't have enough storage space to complete an update

Updates generally require additional storage space in order to be completed properly.

If your Android device isn’t updating and your storage space is relatively full, try deleting some apps you don’t use, or large files like photos and videos.

Samsung Smart Switch is software used to transfer contacts, etc. to a new Samsung phone, synchronize Contacts with Microsoft Outlook, and/or backup the phone.

This is a typical issue where the software was developed without testing as a Standard User as the primary account.

  • Application: Samsung Smart Switch v4.1.16102.12, v4.2.20061.8, v4.2.20113.5
  • OS: Windows 10 Professional (64-bit) v1607, v1909, v2004

  • Installing Smart Switch under a Standard user account completes without any errors. But, when you check Information > Smart Switch Information, the version number is still the old version.
  • During installation, UAC (User Access Control) does prompt for an Administrator password.
  • Installing Smart Switch while logged in as an Administrator does not resolve the problem for the Standard user account, and also doesn’t use the settings and directories used to backup the device.
  • Smart Switch will show the updated version number while logged in as an Administrator, but shows the old version when logged in as the Standard user.

Solution (Update 2020-12-06)

  • Uninstalling Samsung Kies resolved the issue for me. Smart Switch now updates the version in the Standard user account, and no longer prompts for an update on every start.
  • Samsung Kies is the predecessor to Smart Switch. When Smart Switch was released, I kept Kies to test both, to make sure Smart Switch synced the phone contacts with Outlook without any issues.
  • I decided to fully uninstall Smart Switch to do a clean install, and realized I never uninstalled Kies.

Here are instructions to install Smart Switch into the correct profile for the Standard User account.

  • Needless to say, you need to have sufficient space on your Samsung phone. Get rid of any unwanted data on your phone or move it to SD card to make more free space.
  • Restart your phone in order to clear its cache. This will automatically make more space on its primary memory.
  • If that won’t work, then visit the device’s storage settings and manually clear its cache. After that, restart your phone and try connecting it to Smart Switch.

5. Limitations of Samsung Smart Switch

While Samsung Smart Switch might meet your basic needs, it has numerous limitations as well.

First we download the program on our trusty computer, using the link available on the official website Samsung Smart Switch. You can choose the version for Windows or Mac, or the app to be installed on the Samsung phone (but here we talk about the program). After the download we install the program, so as to provide the computer with the drivers necessary to manage every aspect of the phone, then we connect the Samsung smartphone via USB cable to a free port of the same name on the computer.

The first time you connect the device, you will be asked to confirm a warning message on your phone, so that you can immediately benefit from all the features of the program.

Immediately after the connection, you should immediately make a backup of your personal data and the system on the Samsung phone, so that you can intervene in case of problems with the update. So let’s press on Back up and select all the items to be saved in the computer memory.

At the end of the backup we return to the main screen of the program and wait a few seconds, so that we can allow the program to find any system updates. If there is an update, a warning message will appear in the center of the program, with the button Refresh in evidence.

We press the button and follow the instructions on the screen (in particular those concerning the remaining battery), so that we can download and install the new update quickly. When the procedure is started, we take care not to move the USB cable, the phone or accidentally turn off the PC, otherwise the update will be lost or the operating system damaged (which may not even start anymore).
For this reason we recommend that you proceed with updating Samsung phones (and other phones in general) only from a notebook with a battery in good condition, so that we can also avoid a sudden power blackout that could damage the phone.
Once the update is complete, the Samsung smartphone will restart one or more times and, after a few minutes of waiting, we will finally be ready to use it.

How to reset your phone with Smart Switch

If we have problems with the phone or we want to restore correct operation, we can benefit from the backup made by Smart Switch at the first start or use the recovery procedures provided by the program to brilliantly solve any problem, even after an update.
To restore a Samsung phone, simply open the Smart Switch and press the button on the top right Other and then on the voice Initialization and recovery of the emergency software.

A window will open where you can choose whether to start an emergency software reset (for phones that do not start or freeze) or to initialize the device (useful for restoring the phone to factory settings, deleting personal data) .
In both cases we will have to carefully follow the steps recommended by the program, which will allow you to place the Samsung phone in Download mode (a special recovery mode), so that we can proceed with the actual recovery.
At the end of the restore, we do not disconnect anything and wait for the phone to start, until the welcome window appears where you can choose the language.

If we want to choose the data to restore, just press on the item Select backup data and check the contents of each backup, so as to choose what to restore on the phone and what to avoid.

How to transfer data from an old phone to a new one

Samsung Smart Switch can also be used to quickly transfer all your personal data from an old Samsung mobile phone to a new smartphone (always Samsung). To proceed we will need to download the Samsung Smart Switch Mobile app on both phones and proceed as follows:

  • We open the app on the old phone and select Send data, then we choose whether to send via Wi-Fi or via USB cable (to be used between the two phones);
  • Now open the app on the new phone and select this time Receive data, taking care to also choose the same transfer system.
  • We wait for the two phones to connect, so as to start the transfer of personal data, accounts and apps that we have installed.

The procedure is simple and fast, especially if we use a USB cable suitable for the purpose those visible below:

  • Rankie OTG Cable, Micro USB Male to USB 2.0 Female Adapter (6 €)
  • AmazonBasics – USB 2.0 Male to Micro-B Cable (Single Pack), 0.9m ($ 4)
  • AmazonBasics – USB-C to Micro B 2.0 cable, 0.9 m (€ 7)
  • UGREEN USB C Thunderbolt 3 Data SYNC cable, USB Type-C cable (€ 12)

Obviously we choose the right cable or the right configuration based on the USB port on the new Samsung phone: if there is a USB Type-C port just use a single cable, if instead there is a classic USB port we will have to use the USB OTG cable on the old smartphone and use one of the recommended cables.

As mentioned above, Samsung Smart Switch is a very useful program to create quick backups, restore the phone in any condition and to update the devices without too many problems. If we often connect the smartphone to the PC, Smart Switch must not be missing from all Samsung owners, so that we can better manage the new phone.

Smart Switch is undoubtedly one of Samsung’s most underrated piece of software. Not only can it create a complete (and encrypted) backup of your device on a PC/Mac, it can also help recover from a botched software upgrade attempt. In this tutorial, we’ll be taking a look at how to create a complete device backup using Samsung Smart Switch.

Step 1: Download and install Samsung Smart Switch on your PC/Mac from Samsung’s official website.

Step 2: Download and install the corresponding app from the Google Play Store.

Step 3: Connect your Samsung device to your PC/Mac and run Smart Switch. This is what you should see initially.

Step 4: Once the connection has been established, you should be taken to the following screen.

Step 6: Tap on ‘Preferences’ to specify what data you need to be backed up. All of it is checked by default, so you need not worry about missing out on anything. Nonetheless, if there’s something that you want to exclude, you can do it in the following menu.

Step 7: Once you’ve made your selections, tap OK and navigate back to the main menu and tap on Backup. You should be prompted to set the location of the backup on your PC/Mac.

Step 8: Once you’ve successfully set the path, you’ll see a prompt that shows you the progress of the data transfer. There’ll be a similar prompt on your phone too. Once the process is complete, you have a full backup of your phone at your disposal.

This method is more advantageous than simply copying files onto your device in several ways. For starters, you get to move over device-specific settings, App Data, and the whole shebang. Furthermore, since the process happens over USB, it is a lot faster than downloading a backup file off the cloud.

Furthermore, you can even prompt it to save only the bare essentials and exclude the heavy stuff such as media. It is ideal for people who switch phones often and need their new device up and running quickly.
