Download and Burn the Image to a Disc

The first thing you’ll need to do is head over to the BitDefender site and download the latest version of their rescue CD, and then use an application to burn that ISO image file to an optical disc—we prefer using ImgBurn, but there’s plenty of ways to burn an ISO to a disc.

Once you’ve started it up, if the resolution is too small, you can use the menu at the bottom to head to Settings –> Display to adjust it.

From here you can change the resolution to something bigger—you can use 1024×768 to make sure you’ve got enough room on the screen to see everything.

Once you’ve accepted the license agreement, the scan starts immediately.

If you need to do some work on your file system, you can easily use the File Manager to get to your files—the nice thing is that it opens up directly into your Windows drive.

There’s also a copy of TestDisk installed automatically, which can be used to recover data. If you’d like more information about how to use it, we’ve got a whole article about recovering data like a forensics expert.

Ok, so I know this is some kind of spyware, malware i’m infected with. I have AVG free for virus, spybot for spyware, ran both, fixed some, same issues. Restore point only goes back about a week, this started maybe a couple months ago, finally irratating enough for me to try to deal with. Basically whenever i’m in Google mostly and do a search, the search comes up, then when i click on a link, it opens a totally different page, not what I’m looking for, example: searching for info on Greek Gods and I click a link that takes me to how to change a diaper, Yuckk!

My question is: what do you guys suggest for tools to get rid of this problem, what’s worked best for you, shy of rebuilding a pc to factory default and reloading all software. I can do this, but don’t want to stay up nights at home, would rather enjoy the sleep at that time.

Thanks for the help.

But not in that order. just fyi.

If it is truly a virus (not just mal-ware) here is the crux of the matter. If you are booting off of an infected disk, then there is a good possibility that the virus has/will undermine your virus scanner and then it will one of several things 1) hide from the scanner, 2) stop the scanner or kill its processes, 3) stop the scanner from updating so it does not ever get the approriate sigs. The only true way to get rid of a virus is to boot from a different drive (i.e. cd-rom) and clean it from there.

Many of the anti-virus programs have their own bootable iso’s that you download, burn to a CD and boot from that CD. That way, no virus can be kicking and screaming as you rip it out.

I use the Kaspersky CD almost exclusively, because it does such a good job. One gotcha, they normally take several hours to run (read: leave it overnight) Every once in a while I’ll run into a piece of hardware that it doesn’t like and I wont get an graphic screen but the text based screen should run fine. If you can plug in the Ethernet cable instead of using wireless you’ll have a better chance of it working as well. (it has to update the sigs)

Find and remove persistent or difficult-to-clean security threats

Trend Micro Rescue Disk allows you to use a CD, DVD, or USB drive to examine your computer without launching Microsoft Windows. It finds and removes persistent or difficult-to-clean security threats that can lurk deep within your operating system.

Rescue Disk does not need to load potentially-infected system files into memory before trying to remove them. It can scan hidden files, system drivers, and the Master Boot Record (MBR) of your computer’s hard drive without disturbing the operating system.

Getting Started

  1. Click Download to begin.
  2. If prompted, click Save or Save As, and save the file on your computer’s desktop.
  3. While the installer downloads, prepare one of the following:
    • Blank CD or DVD (do not use a rewritable disc)
    • Empty USB Drive (128MB or larger)
NOTE: The drive will be reformatted before creating Rescue Disk, and anything already on the USB drive will be lost. Please back up any important files before using a USB drive for Trend Micro Rescue Disk.
  4. When you have finished downloading the file, double-click the Trend Micro Rescue Disk icon to start the installer.

To launch your computer from a CD or DVD, you must set the BIOS to boot from a different device. While the exact procedure differs from computer to computer, the overall process is usually like this:

  1. Insert the disc or USB drive into the computer.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. When the computer powers up again, look for a BIOS setup message, which often looks like “Press [KEY] to run Setup” where [KEY] might be Delete, ESC, or one of the F1–F12 keys.
  4. Once the BIOS Setup Utility has opened, look for a tab labeled Boot, Boot Order, or Boot Options.

The problem with cleaning malware from Windows

RELATED: How to remove viruses and malware from your Windows PC

Standard antivirus software runs on Windows. If your computer is infected with malware, the antivirus software will need to fight the malware. Antivirus software will attempt to stop the malware and remove it, while malware will attempt to defend itself and shut down the antivirus. For really nasty malware, your antivirus software may not be able to completely remove it from Windows.

Rootkits, a type of hiding malware, can be even trickier. A rootkit can load on startup before other Windows components and prevent Windows from seeing it, hide its processes from the task manager, and even trick antivirus applications into thinking the rootkit is not running.

The problem here is that both malware and antivirus are running on the computer at the same time. Antivirus tries to fight malware in its territory – malware can fight.

Why you should use an antivirus boot disk

Anti-virus boot disks address this problem by approaching malware from outside of Windows. Boot your computer from a CD or USB drive containing the antivirus, and it loads a specialized operating system from the disk. Even if your Windows installation is completely infected with malware, the special operating system will not contain any malware.

This means that the antivirus program can run on the Windows installation from the outside. The malware will not run while the antivirus tries to remove it, so the antivirus can methodically locate and remove the harmful software without interfering.

Rootkits will not be able to configure the tricks they use when Windows starts up to hide from the rest of the operating system. The antivirus will be able to see rootkits and remove them.

These tools are often referred to as “hot spares”. They are meant to be used when you need to rescue a desperately infected system.

Bootable antivirus options

As with any type of antivirus software, you have several options. Many anti-virus companies offer bootable anti-virus systems based on their anti-virus software. These tools are generally free, even when offered by companies specializing in paid antivirus solutions. Here are some good options:

    – We love Avast! to offer capable free antivirus with good detection rates in independent tests. avast! now offers the option to create an anti-virus boot disk or USB drive. Just go to the Tools -> Rescue Disk option in the avast file! desktop application for creating bootable media. – BitDefender always seems to receive good scores in independent tests, and the BitDefender Rescue CD offers the same antivirus engine as a bootable disc. – Kaspersky also scores well in independent tests and offers its own anti-virus boot disk.

These are just a few options. If you prefer another antivirus for some reason – Comodo, Norton, Avira, ESET, or almost any other antivirus product – you’ll likely find that it offers its own system rescue disk.

How to use the bitdefender rescue cd to clean your infected pcHow to use an antivirus boot disk

Using an anti-virus boot disk or USB stick is actually pretty straightforward. You will just need to find the antivirus boot disk you want to use and burn it to a disc or install it on a USB stick. You can do this part on any computer, so you can create anti-virus bootable media on a clean computer and then transfer it to an infected computer.

Insert the bootable media into the infected computer, then restart. The computer should boot from removable media and load the secure antivirus environment. (If not, you may need to change the boot order in your BIOS or UEFI firmware.) You can then follow the on-screen instructions to scan your Windows system for malware and remove it. to delete. No malware will run in the background while you do this.

Bootable antivirus is useful when a computer gets severely infected and unable to boot normally. In this situation, it is hard to run any virus scanner in the system. Bootable antivirus becomes handy here. Boot with the rescue bootable CD or USB and run a system scan to remove the viruses. Below are some good bootable virus scanners.

How to use the bitdefender rescue cd to clean your infected pc

It is free emergency boot up CD launched by AVG. Free AVG Antivirus users can also use this tool freely. It also includes some other utilities like registry editor, Testdisk utility for recovering deleted files and lost partitions of the disk. Its size is smaller then other rescue disks. But it does not have full graphical user interface.

After getting rid off the non-boot situation using the above tools. We recommend to scan with an Online virus scanner or with a Multi AV scanner to completely remove all possible threats from the computer. If you are still unable to connect to the internet you can use Offline virus scanner tools to go further in the cleaning process. Then install a good antivirus software with real time protection. Also keep an antimalware software in the system which can be installed along-with the existing antivirus.

A Rescue CD or USB boots with the computer bypassing Windows. It is mainly used when Windows is unable to start, which may be because of various reasons. Some of them are:

  • It is infected with malware.
  • The hard disk has bad sectors. Some of the Windows boot files are present on those sectors, and therefore cannot boot/start.
  • Windows files are corrupt or missing, because of the previous two or some other reasons.

In these cases, a Boot CD/USB can prove to be a lifesaver. It can be helpful in a number of ways. Some of them are:

  • Rescue disks can be used to clean an infected copy of Windows. To remove infections from Windows, Rescue disks provided by antivirus companies can be helpful. These disks let the user connect to the online antivirus database of that company, then scan and remove the infections from the computer.
  • Rescue disks can be used to repair the corrupt Windows installation. Windows lets its users make a recovery drive. This recovery drive can be used to repair or reinstall a corrupt Windows.
  • Rescue disks can be used to backup the data of the host computer to an external storage device. Any Linux distro based CD/USB disk can be used for this purpose.

Bitdefender is one of the best antivirus products for the Windows computers. It consistently occupies the first spot or ranks among the top three positions in most of the independent antivirus tests, reports and surveys.

Creating Bitdefender Rescue CD

Download the Bitdefender Rescue CD .iso file from the following official download link:
http://download.bitdefender.com/rescue_cd/latest/bitdefender-rescue-cd.iso

To create a Rescue CD (or USB), you need to burn the downloaded .iso (image) file on the CD (or USB). In order to burn the .iso to your USB drive (or pen drive or flash drive or thumb drive), you need an image burning software installed on your computer. The recommended software here is Rufus. Download and open Rufus.

Select your USB drive in the Rufus Device menu.

Use MBR partition scheme for BIOS or UEFI. The USB made using this option can run on both types of systems – the older BIOS as well as the newer UEFI.

Keep FAT32 as the File System.

Use the Default Cluster size.

How to use the bitdefender rescue cd to clean your infected pc

In the Format Options, click the button with the disk icon to browse the iso file that you want to burn on the USB drive. In this case, I’m selecting the Bitdefender Rescue CD iso file.

How to use the bitdefender rescue cd to clean your infected pc

When the Bitdefender iso has been selected, you’ll notice that the New volume label has automatically changed.

Now’s the time to make sure that the USB you’re going to use is not having any files in it. Because the drive will be formatted at the beginning of the burning process, and all of your files inside the USB drive will be deleted. Also, make sure that you have selected the right USB drive. There may be more than one USB inserted into the system. In such a scenario, you could accidentally delete your files and burn the iso on the wrong drive.

Click the Start button at the bottom of the program window to start the burning process.

Eliminate PC viruses with the official Panda Antivirus CD

This program can no longer be downloaded. Take a look at Panda Cloud Antivirus instead.

Panda SafeCD is a rescue disk that can locate and eliminate viruses on your PC directly from a CD or USB.

To use Panda SafeCD, just burn the ISO image to a physical CD or USB. Then boot your computer directly while using either. Panda SafeCD operates independently of Windows, so if a virus is keeping Windows from running properly, Panda SafeCD should be able to locate and eliminate it. The program works best when you need to scan and clean a PC that’s currently infected with malware. This type of infected state generally gives traditional antivirus programs that run within Windows directly a more difficult time.

Panda SafeCD offers a thorough analysis of your hard drive. If a virus is found, the program will display it for you, then delete it. The interface is simple and easy to navigate, although there are very few advanced settings offered.

Keep in mind that Panda SafeCD is not meant to replace the other antivirus programs you use. Panda SafeCD focuses on emergency cases that need a thorough analysis. It also lacks a lot of the advanced options more comprehensive antivirus programs provide.

Panda SafeCD is a great complement to other antivirus programs because it doesn’t require Windows to do its job.

How to use the bitdefender rescue cd to clean your infected pc

You might be wondering why we have a screenshot of what appears to be AVG Anti-Virus, but is in fact a fake anti-virus malware that holds your computer hostage until you pay them. Here’s a really simple tip to defeating these types of malware, and a quick review of other options.

Not sure what we’re talking about? Be sure to check out our previous articles on cleaning up fake antivirus infections.

  • How To Remove Internet Security 2010 and other Rogue/Fake Antivirus Malware
  • How To Remove Antivirus Live and Other Rogue/Fake Antivirus Malware
  • How To Remove Advanced Virus Remover and Other Rogue/Fake Antivirus Malware
  • How To Remove Security Tool and other Rogue/Fake Antivirus Malware

So what’s the problem? Can’t you just run a anti-virus scan? Well… it’s not quite that simple. What actually happens is that these pieces of malware block you from running almost anything on your PC, and often prevent you from running apps from a Flash drive, with an error like this:

How to use the bitdefender rescue cd to clean your infected pc

Once you encounter this error, there’s a couple things you can do. The first one is almost stupidly simple, and works some of the time:

Move the Dialog, and Try Again!

Yeah, that’s right—reader Robert wrote in to tell us that you can often just move that error to the side of the screen, and then try to run your anti-malware or anti-spyware application again. Turns out that some of the errors will only run once… and then you can get your favorite application running.

How to use the bitdefender rescue cd to clean your infected pc

If that doesn’t work, then here’s the next great tip…

Rename Your Anti-Malware App to Explorer.exe

Since most of the fake anti-virus malware needs you to be able to slightly use your PC, the one executable that it won’t ever block is “explorer.exe”, since they want you to be able to get online and go to their site and pay them—not so easy if you have no Start Menu.

So just rename your favorite anti-malware application to explorer.exe, and you should be able to use it.

Thanks to reader Jeffrey for writing in with this tip.

General Guide to Defeating Fake Anti-Virus Infections

There’s a couple of steps that you can generally follow to get rid of the majority of rogue antivirus infections, and actually most malware or spyware infections of any type. Here’s the quick steps:

  • Try to use the free, portable version of SUPERAntiSpyware to remove the viruses.
  • If that doesn’t work, reboot your PC into safe mode with networking (use F8 right before Windows starts to load)
  • If that doesn’t work, and safe mode is blocked, try running ComboFix . Note that I’ve not yet had to resort to this, but some of our readers have.
  • Install MalwareBytes and run it, doing a full system scan. (see our previous article on how to use it ).
  • Reboot your PC again, and run a full scan using your normal Antivirus application (we recommend Microsoft Security Essentials).
  • At this point your PC is usually clean.

These steps generally work.

Create the Boot CD/DVD on an uninfected computer, handle the media on the edges, i.e., no finger prints on the media. Also buy sleeves or CD cases to store the media. Ensure you keep the burnt media out of the sun and away from heat sources. Label the media with an indelible marker, adhesive labels tend to have bubbles and ridges which can cause your CD to get stuck. If you cannot remove a cd, insert a straightened paper clip into the little hole you will see on the face of the CD/DVD burner.

As with all methods to remove viruses, multiple tests ensure the viral infections will be identified and then removed. There is no single test by which all viruses can be seen then removed. Cleaning up an infected PC can be frustrating. Here are some simple steps for purging malware from your system.

The process of cleaning up a computer infected with a virus or other malware can be frustrating and more than a little scary. Getting rid of the malware is not easy. Doing it by yourself can take hours, and there are times when a malware infection requires professional help.

The first step is to avoid getting infected in the first place, by any means necessary. That’s best done through smart computer usage — for example, don’t click on unknown attachments, and verify links before clicking on them — and having good antivirus software.

However, even the savviest computer users can be fooled by a good phishing scheme. And while antivirus programs do a good job of preventing infections, they cannot always defend against malware they don’t know about. Some forms of malware even try to disable antivirus software as part of an attack.

Fortunately, there are some simple steps you can take to clean an infected computer.

Step 1: Inspect your system with a free scanner

Many antivirus software vendors have free scanners available on their websites to detect and remove many types of malware. You can either download them or run them via your browser.

Some online scanners include Bitdefender QuickScan and the ESET Online Scanner, the latter of which requires a small download to get started.

“These online scanners have the advantage of not being on your computer when you were infected, so they are not compromised like your existing antivirus software,” said Brendan Ziolo, a marketing executive at networking-hardware giant Alcatel-Lucent. “If the scanner removes the threat, then you are on your way to fixing the program.”

However, it might be better to run a downloadable tool, such as Norton’s Power Eraser, or to install and run free anti-malware software, such as Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Step 2: If the first step doesn’t work, use a rescue disk

Sometimes malware can take control of the system and/or hide itself from these tools. If you are unable to remove the malware with the scanner, or can’t access the scanning tools on the internet, then you’ll need to use a rescue disk.

Rescue disks, which are usually free, contain a full operating system (usually some form of Linux) and will boot the computer from the disk itself. They make it possible to repair a damaged system, recover data or scan the system for malware infections. (You may need to change your BIOS settings by pressing the F2 key during startup to enable booting from CDs or USB drives.)

Most antivirus companies provide rescue-disk images for download; you may want to check out include Kaspersky’s Rescue Disk or F-Secure’s Rescue CD. There’s also Hiren’s BootCD, which packs dozens of malware scanners, cleanup tools, recovery tools and other utilities into a single disk image.

Many antivirus programs suggest that you create a rescue disk before your computer becomes infected, Ziolo said.

If you need to use a rescue disk, create one on a CD or USB from an uninfected computer,” Ziolo said. “Once the rescue disk is created, boot up your infected computer using that disk and follow the instructions.”

After the malware is removed, you’ll need to take some further steps to help prevent future attacks.

Step 3: Run a system vulnerability check

Many security companies offer free programs that let you see whether your computer’s applications, plugins and operating system are up-to-date, and whether all security holes have been patched.

Step 4: Install or update antivirus software

You should also ensure your antivirus software is up-to-date, and then run a complete scan to make sure there are no further threats.

Don’t have antivirus software? You really should. Check out our recommendations.

However, there are times when you just can’t solve the problem yourself, said Aryeh Goretsky, a researcher with security company ESET.

“These days, malware is insidious, establishes all sorts of footholds within the system and can make many different changes to a system, which may be non-obvious and cause seemingly unrelated and difficult-to-troubleshoot problems,” Goretsky said.

If you’ve taken these steps and still aren’t satisfied, or if you have concerns about what damage the infection may have caused, it may be time to seek external assistance.

You should contact the anti-malware vendor’s support department and work with the technical support engineer to examine the system for any residual damage. The technician may be able to determine what the malware did while it was on the system.

“If the computer is used for something important and/or sensitive, the best solution may be to back up the valuable data, format the hard disk drive, and then reload the operating system and applications,” Goretsky said.

Once the operating systems and applications are re-installed, patch them by installing updates to the latest available versions. Then, restore the data from backups.

About Nick

Why would BitDefender Bootable Rescue CD (and loads of other Rescue CDs too) be able to identify but unable to fix or delete malware? It can however put it into quarintine.

And what happens when the viruses are put into quarintine? It dosn’t really mean anything if it can successfully put the malware into quarintine if it’s a CD-bootable OS. It’s only quarintined in the context of the memory it exists in. When I restart windows, I’m still infected with loads of viruses.

Depending on the infection, it may be a modification to a required system file. I ran into this with a few infections in the past 6-7 months where ATAPI.SYS was infected. Removing the infected file renders the system unbootable, and at least early on software wasn’t able to repair – just remove/rename.

The solution I ended up with for those early infection was to boot to the recovery console from an XP install CD and manually replace the affected file with a clean copy.

I’ve also had good luck with Kaspersky’s boot CD, though you need to have a wired network connection because it must download updates unless you have a Kaspersky product installed on the PC (I believe in that situation it can use those virus signatures). The nice thing about Kaspersky is that you can open both terminal and file browser windows (Avira allows this but does it with a German keyboard layout which is annoying). This makes it fairly simple to remove the contents of the Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 (or just remove the directory itself, it’ll be recreated), any executables/DLLs/etc. from temp directories, and check for recently-modified exectuables, DLLs and system files. The command line does include the “find” command so you can check for recently modified files, but I don’t think it includes “less” or “more”. If you don’t want to use find, ls -ltr is a very useful command in directories like system32.

Also, regarding quarantine: Typically that’s going to mean that it renames the file (Avira adds a .XXX extension) so it’s can’t be located/launched when the system is rebooted to Windows. Completely removing files can be a bad idea in case of false positives.
