Another small feature in iOS 11 that will prove useful for a lot of users is the new option for one handed keyboards. Follow along for how to easily switch between the standard and one handed keyboards and also change the default option.
Although it’s faster to use two hands, we all experience times when we need to type with one. Apple’s new one handed keyboard feature built into iOS 11 adds a convenient left and right one handed option to the stock keyboard.
How to use the one handed keyboard in iOS 11
- Press and hold on the globe or emoji next to the 123 button
- Select the left or right handed keyboard icon
- Tap the chevron on the side of the keyboard to return to a standard centered keyboard
The one handed keyboards provide enough of an adjustment that it’s easy (for most) to reach the entire keyboard with one thumb, even on the iPhone 7 Plus (this feature won’t be found on the iPhone SE or 5s).
Here’s a closer look at the new feature:
How to make the one handed keyboard the default in iOS 11

One-hand typing can be an issue on iPhones, especially the ones with larger screens. Thankfully, iOS has a built-in option to change keyboard size for comfortable use. In this article, let’s have a quick look at how you can use the one-handed keyboard on iPhone running iOS 14 or iOS 15.
Use One-Handed Keyboard on iPhone (iOS 14/15)
Table of Contents
The one-handed keyboard mode on the iPhone makes the keyboard smaller and easier to type for single-hand use. When used, the keyboard will be shifted to the screen’s left or right side based on what you prefer. You can then comfortably use your thumb to reach all keys with one hand.
Step to Change Keyboard Size on iPhone for One Hand Use
- While typing, touch, and hold the Emoji or Earth icon on your iPhone keyboard.
- You’ll now see keyboard position icons- left, regular, and right.
- Tap the keyboard icon to the left or right to get the one-handed keyboard on your iPhone.
- Tapping the icon at the left will shift the keyboard to the left, while tapping the icon at the right will shift the keyboard.
To revert to the normal layout, tap and hold the Emoji or Earth icon and select the middle’s keyboard icon. You can also switch by tapping the arrow given in the space next to the keyboard.
Alternatively, you can go to Settings > General > Keyboard > One-Handed Keyboard and turn it on to get a small size keyboard on your iPhone.
One-Hand Keyboard Option Missing on Your iPhone?
Is the one-hand keyboard option missing from your iPhone keyboard? Well, this is usually the case with iPhones having smaller screens like the iPhone SE 2020. On these models, Apple uses the “Zoomed” view by default.
If you want to use one-handed keyboard mode, you’ll have to tweak the Display Zoom settings as follows.
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Head to Display & Brightness.
- Click on View under “Display Zoom.”
- Change it from Zoomed to Standard.
- Click Set at the top-right corner. Confirm the prompt to apply changes.
You will now be able to use the one-handed keyboard option on your iPhone without any issues. However, I don’t think it’ll be of any use on iPhones that already have a small screen size.
This was all about how you can use the one-handed keyboard on iPhone running iOS 14. I’ve also mentioned what to do if the one-hand keyboard option is missing on your iPhone. Do try it and let me know if it works for you in the comments below. Stay tuned for more tips and tricks on iOS.

Though our iPhones have gotten bigger and bigger over the years, our hands have not (well, unless you were 3 years old in 2007). The good thing is that the wider phones have allowed larger keyboards, making more room for some of us with chubby fingers to make fewer errors.
But this has lead to a problem for many others in the “I hold my iPhone in one hand and type with my thumb because my other hand is busy doing something else” club. So, there we find ourselves rising to the challenge as we always do, figuring out ways to overcome by balancing, twisting, or even letting a slight slip of the phone through our fingers to hit the “123” button in the bottom corner so you can access a comma. And we do all of this without ever thinking that Apple has realized this and provided a solution. And its name doesn’t make it a mystery as to what it does. It’s called…
Really, One-Handed Keyboard?
Yep. One-Handed Keyboard.
It’s not the most elegant solution, and won’t work great for everyone, but it may provide some assistance to the least-nimble among us.
Here’s what right-handed mode looks like compared to the standard keyboard:
On the iPhone 11 Pro, the right-handed keyboard (shown on the right) is roughly 5/16″ narrower than its full-sized companion on the left.
As you might imagine, left-handed mode is the opposite, with the keyboard compressed slightly to the left instead of the right.
There are three ways to turn on the one-handed keyboard.
You can access your keyboard settings directly from the keyboard.
1. Go to “Settings > General > Keyboard”
2. When using the keyboard in any app, press and hold the Globe icon in the bottom left corner and choose “Keyboard Settings…”
3. Choose the icon at the bottom of your Globe menu that represents left, right or center (off) mode.
Click the “One-Handed Keyboard” option.
This will bring up your Keyboard Settings:
The One-Handed Keyboard setting allows left or right keyboard positioning.
Click on One-Handed Keyboard, and this is what you will see:
Note: You’ll notice underneath the options that it tells you, “You can quickly access these settings by pressing and holding the Emoji or Globe key on the keyboard.”
Introduced in iOS 12 in 2018, the ability to slightly compress the keyboard to one side or the other made its debut. The idea behind this is that it makes it easier folks typing with one hand to reach the far side of their screen – at least by about 5/16 ths of an inch. And though I haven’t really used it too much, I must say that it does help a little bit. However, there are certain characters that my fat thumb will tend to misjudge anyway because now the size of each letter key is smaller.
Oh well, I guess it’s just a trade-off.
Even though I am right-handed and tend to “two-hand-thumb-type,” I prefer using my left when in single-hand mode. Why? I don’t know. Maybe because it’s easier for me to grip the steering wheel with my right hand (or my knees if I’m using my right to search for loose change in the passenger seat).
Disclaimer: Yes, of course, I am kidding about the above statement. When was the last time I used change anyway?
Turning off the One-Handed Keyboard
To return to your standard keyboard, simply click the arrow to the keyboard’s side and everything will uncompress and slide back to the “normal” centered position.
So, have you tried using the One-Handed Keyboard option? If so, does it seem to help, or have you given up like I have heard many do? I’ve never had a “Max” sized iPhone, but imagine it would be far more helpful than my standard sized phone.
Apple’s new iOS 11 update allows users to select and type with one-handed keyboards — which allows you to more conveniently use your thumb to type when only one hand is available.
Here’s how to do it:
1. Open up your iPhone keyboard in the Notes or Messenger apps.
2. Press down and hold the emoji button (located in the bottom left of the standard keyboard).
3. Three keyboard options will appear in the settings: Left-handed, standard, and right-handed. Select what works best.
4. Once a one-handed keyboard is selected, a “chevron” sign will appear on the side of the keyboard. Selecting that will allow you to return to normal (aka standard) keyboard settings.
One-handed keyboards can also be made a default option:
1. Go to the settings app.
2. Select “General > Keyboard.”
3. Tap one-handed keyboard and choose either right or left. Or return here to turn it “Off” if you’d like to return the advanced world of two-handed keyboard typing.
That’s all there is to it! Now you no longer have to suffer through the tyranny of having tiny hands and a gigantic iPhone screen.

The latest iOS versions support one-handed keyboard mode for iPhone. One Handed Keyboard shifts the touch screen keys over on the screen to the left or to the right, so that it’s theoretically easier to reach the keys with a single thumb. This keyboard feature can be particularly helpful for users who have the larger iPhone Plus and iPhone X models and find them challenging to type on one handed.
It’s very easy to enable and use the one handed keyboard on iPhone, but like so many other iOS features it’s also easy to overlook or miss entirely. This tutorial will show you how to enable and use the iPhone One-Handed Keyboard feature.
You will need a modern version of iOS for iPhone to have this feature available, anything beyond iOS 11 has the capability. The iPad does not have one handed keyboard support.
How to Enable and Use One Handed Keyboard on iPhone
You can quickly switch into and out of One Handed Keyboard mode on iPhone, here’s how it works:
- Access the keyboard anywhere on the iPhone as usual, whether in Messages, Mail, Safari, Notes, etc does not matter
- Tap and hold on the Emoji icon in the lower left corner of the keyboard (it looks like a little smiling face icon)*
- Left: keyboard shifts to the left, if you type with your left thumb this is likely what you’d use
- Center: the default iPhone keyboard, centered and not shifted over into One Handed Mode
- Right: keyboard keys shift to the right, if you want to type with your right thumb this is probably what you’d use
If you struggle with typing with a single hand and usually rely on using two hands for texting and typing, try out the one-handed keyboard, it might help you out and you might just like it.
* Note the Emoji access icon, which is now a smiley face, used to be a little globe icon, and is also where you switch keyboard languages in iOS if you have multiple different languages and/or emoji enabled. If you somehow don’t have Emoji enabled you can easily turn it on in iPhone settings.
Exiting One Handed Keyboard on iPhone
Note that once One Handed Keyboard is enabled, you can quickly disable it and go back to the normal default keyboard by tapping the arrow button on the side of the iPhone one-handed keyboard.
This feature is only available for iPhone and iPod Touch, perhaps for obvious reasons it is not on iPad. The iPad does have some other nifty keyboard typing tricks though, including the split keyboard which can help typing with thumbs only. If you like this, you may appreciate some other helpful iOS touch screen typing tips too.
I keep seeing videos on YouTube showing how to move the keyboard position on the screen.
In my case, it is to the left.
Since I'm right handed, I wish to re position the keyboard to the right.
There doesn't seem to be a way of doing this on iOS 14.3?
Was this present before 14.3 and the new update forgot it?

With iOS 11, Apple added a one-handed keyboard option to the iPhone. This should make it easier to type while holding a larger iPhone in a single hand. Both right-handed and left-handed keyboards are available.
Note that this one-handed keyboard only exists on 4.7- and 5.5-inch iPhones (like the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus)—it doesn’t exist on smaller iPhones like the SE, nor does it exist on the iPod Touch or iPad.
Quickly Switch to the One-Handed Keyboard
To quickly switch to the one-handed keyboard while typing, long-press the emoji key on the keyboard. When the pop-up menu appears, select either the left-handed or right-handed keyboard icons.
To return to the default two-handed keyboard, just tap the arrow button at the left or right side of the keyboard. You can also long-press the emoji key once again and tap the two-handed keyboard icon.
If you have multiple keyboards enabled, you’ll see a globe-shaped international keyboard key. Long-press the globe key instead of the emoji key to open the menu.
If you don’t see an emoji or globe key, this means you’ve disabled all additional keyboards, including the emoji keyboard. To re-enable the emoji keyboard, head to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard > Emoji. The emoji key will reappear on your keyboard.
Set the One-Handed Keyboard as Your Default
You can also set the one-handed keyboard as your default keyboard, if you prefer it. To do so, head to Settings > General > Keyboard > One Handed Keyboard and select either “Left” for the left-handed keyboard or “Right” for the right-handed keyboard.
To restore the two-handed keyboard as your default keyboard, return here and select “Off”.
Third-party keyboards may also have a one-handed mode. For example, Google’s Gboard keyboard also allows you to select a “One-handed mode” option after you long-press on the globe option. So even if you don’t use Apple’s keyboard, give this a shot and see if your keyboard of choice has a similar option.

Sometimes, whether it’s because I’m holding a cup of coffee or I’m just too lazy to type with both, I type with just one hand. When I’m using the four-inch iPhone SE, it’s fairly easy, but anything larger and the reach is awkward and cumbersome. Apple added a one-handed keyboard feature that squishes all of the keys to the left or right of the screen so you can type with one hand without having to stretch your thumbs. And, even if you’ve got big old fingers, the keyboard technology is smart enough to predict what you’re probably trying to type and will activate the correct key most of the time. Here’s how to enable it on iPhone.
Note: The one-handed keyboard feature is not available on four-inch iPhones like iPhone SE or on the iPad. On iPad, you can instead use the split keyboard feature.
How to enable the one-handed keyboard on iPhone
To use the one-handed keyboard on iPhone, you can enable it from the Settings section. If you don’t see the feature in your Settings section, you’re using a device that doesn’t support one-handed keyboard (like iPhone SE or iPad), or you need to upgrade to iOS 11.
- Launch the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap General.
Tap Left or Right depending on your preference.
If you like to type one-handed with your left and right hand, don’t worry. You can switch sides with the Global Keyboard key.
How to access the one-handed keyboard on iPhone
You can also quickly access the one-handed keyboard by using the Global key on your keyboard. The Global key will only appear on your keyboard if you have at least one other keyboard enabled, like the Emoji board or a third-party keyboard. You won’t see the one-handed keyboard on smaller iPhones (like iPhone SE) or on the iPad.
- Launch the app you want to start typing in.
- Press and hold the Global Keyboard key.
- Tap the left or right keyboard icon.
How to switch back to standard keyboard from one-handed on iPhone
Once you’ve enabled the one-handed keyboard, you can quickly switch back to the standard keyboard by tapping the arrow opposite the keys. You can also go back to the standard keyboard or switch to the other side using the Global Keyboard key.
- Launch the app you want to start typing in.
- Press and hold the Global Keyboard key.
- Tap the left, right, or standard keyboard icon to switch.
- Start typing!

Another little iOS feature that will come in handy for many users is the new one-handed keyboard option. Follow the instructions to easily switch between standard and one-handed keyboards and also change the default option. Although it is faster to work with two hands, we all experience moments when we have to write with one hand. Apple’s new one-handed keyboard feature built into iOS adds a convenient left- and right-handed option to the standard keyboard.
How to use one-handed keyboard on iPhone
Here’s how to do it:
- Open your iPhone keyboard in the Notes or Messenger applications.
- Press and hold the emoji button (located at the bottom left of the standard keyboard).
- Three keyboard options will appear in the settings: left-handed, standard, and right-handed. Select what works best.

One-handed keyboards can also become a default option:
- Go to the settings app.
- Select “General> Keyboard”.
- Play the one-handed keyboard and choose right or left. Or go back here to turn it off if you want to return to the advanced world of two-hand keyboard typing.

Your iPhone probably has a larger display, especially if it is an iPhone 12 Pro Max or any other “Max” model. These taller displays are out of the reach of thumbs sometimes. This usually makes it harder to use an iPhone with one hand, but it shouldn’t be. There are certain hidden one-handed modes on iPhone for easy access and reachability.
Let’s find out how to effectively use your iPhone with just one hand using some of the plans Apple already has for you.
iPhone Reachability Mode for Single Hand Using
It is quite harder for anyone to reach the top of the newer iPhones with Face ID. Your thumb wouldn’t reach the top edge of your iPhone to open the control center, notification center, or even to tap a button. In such cases, there is a hidden one-handed mode on iPhone called Reachability.
The reachability on iPhone lets you pull down the whole screen to the bottom middle of your iPhone and reach without any effort. To enable the iPhone Reachability option, open Settings and go to Accessibility.
From there, tap on the “Touch” option.
Toggle on the “Reachability” from the next screen. If it is already green, your iPhone has reachability enabled.
Once you enable the iPhone Reachability settings, you can access the top of your iPhone by just pilling the screen downwards from the bottom edge. Simply swipe down on the bottom horizontal line to see it in action.
The whole content on the screen will be pulled down and you could find the “top” of the app or anywhere right below the bottom half of your iPhone. The reachability is available only on iPhone X or newer, that is the Face ID iPhone models.
Get iPhone One Handed Keyboard
While the reachability on iPhone allows you to touch and tap on options at the upper edge without any hassles, the keyboard is still an issue. If your fingers cannot reach some buttons on your iPhone keyboard, you can put it in the one-handed keyboard mode as well.
To enable a one-handed keyboard on iPhone, tap any text field to popup the iPhone keyboard. Once the Keyboard is up, you could find the “globe” icon at the bottom-left edge of the keyboard, long-press on it.
A menu will pop up on the keyboard with available keyboards are other options. Among them, choose any of the three options at the bottom of the popup menu. The box with a right arrow means to enable the one-handed keyboard to the right edge and vice versa.
The one-handed keyboard on iPhone will squeeze and show the keyboard letters to either of the sides of your iPhone screen. To make the keyboard full-sized, tap the arrow beside the one-handed keyboard.
A thing to note is that the one-handed keyboard is available only for the original iPhone keyboard, emoji keyboard, and other supported language keyboards within your iPhone. As of now, most third-party iPhone keyboards do not support one-handed mode.
Get Safari Address Bar to Bottom for Easy Access
Address bar or the search bar on Safari is usually at the top which makes it harder for you to type or search anything. Apple now puts it to the bottom, making the tabs and address bar easier to access with one hand. If your iPhone has iOS 15 or newer, here is how you can get the Safari address bar to the bottom of the screen.
Open Safari and see if the address bar is already at the bottom or at the top. If it is at the top, tap the “Aa” icon left to the address bar.
Now, select the “Show Bottom Tab Bar” option. This will switch the Safari address bar to the bottom and will make it easier for you to type anything, and switch between tabs seamlessly.
Go check out our guide to change the Safari address bar position on your iPhone. We have explained certain methods and some other Safari tips over there. Left: Safari Top Address Bar | Right: Safari Bottom Tab Bar
Use AssistiveTouch on iPhone for One-Handed Use
The AssitiveTouch on iPhone is a game-changing floating menu that lets you do tons of actions with one finger. This accessibility option on iPhone allows you to control your iPhone, scroll the pages, navigate iPhone, and even lock the iPhone without pressing any physical buttons. All you need is to tap the floating “AssistiveTouch” icon and choose an action. This is really a great tool if you wish to handle your iPhone single-handedly.
To enable AssitiveTouch on your iPhone, launch Settings and go to Accessibility settings.
Go to Touch settings from the Accessibility screen.
On the next screen, tap on “AssitiveTouch.”
Then, toggle on “AssitiveTouch” from the following window. You can also customize and make changes to the AssitiveTouch options.
When enabled, the AssitiveTouch menu button will float over your screen and will turn transparent when not in use.
You can simply tap on the floating icon to open the menu and do any actions on your iPhone. AssitiveTouch is quite helpful during instances where you can use only one hand to do something on your iPhone.
Even though the iPhones have larger displays than they used to have, they never turned to harder to use. You can still use your iPhone, even the “Pro Max” models with one hand by using the above hidden one-handed mode tricks on your iPhone.

Not enough hours in the day? Type smarter with HERO's patented design that reduces finger travel 35% (or "3 feet per Tweet"). How? In English, we use just 9 keys 80% of the time, so HERO's smarter design puts those keys in the middle where your thumb likes to be.
From the reviews:
"What a mobile keyboard should've been from the beginning!"
"WOW! This is LONG OVERDUE! The more you use it, the easier and faster it gets!"
"Who would've thought, a keyboard that makes sense to use with your thumbs."
Here's how HERO helps you:
– Phone too big? Tilt your device or tap the arrow to move HERO's keys for easy 1-thumb typing.
– Fingers too fat? Me too. On HERO, the most-used keys are 30% bigger than QWERTY.
– @, #, -, ?, !, comma and period are always on the main screen.
– Tap HERO's perfectly placed Bolt button to enter a SPACE (or double-tap for Period+SPACE).
– HOLD or 3D-Touch the Bolt for super-quick access to numbers, cursor control, and your recent emojis and symbols.
– Hold or 3D-Touch keys for accented characters, an em-dash or underscore, a .com, and more.
– Access to an ever-expanding list of classy themes.
Let's leave QWERTY for 10-finger typing, like it was designed for in 1873. Today, we need the efficiency of HERO to save every second we can. Join the movement, and you can help guide HERO's development (swipe is in the plan!) at the HERO Users Group.
What defines iOS more than its software keyboard? It’s the thing that made the original iPhone different from all the other phones with their keyboards of plastic buttons. When we enter text into our iPhones (and our iPads), it’s generally via the standard iOS keyboard. And in iOS 11, there are a few notable improvements to that keyboard.
iOS 11: One-handed keyboard
If you’ve ever been stuck in a situation where you’ve only got one hand free and need to type out a message, you’ve probably experienced what a pain it is to laboriously tap out a message, letting a single finger or thumb roam across the entire width of your phone—especially if you’re using a Plus model. That’s why Apple has built in a new one-handed keyboard mode.
To activate one-handed mode, tap and hold on the emoji keyboard key (if you’ve got multiple languages selected on your iPhone, it’ll be the international keyboard key instead) and you’ll get a pop-up menu listing all your configured keyboards. At the bottom, you’ll see three different options for keyboard layout. In the center is the normal software keyboard; to the left and right are one-handed layouts.
Tap one of them and you’ll see the whole keyboard shift left or right, making it easier for your thumb to reach across to tap that “p” key. This feature works across all keyboards, so even the emoji keyboard will be squeezed into a smaller space. To exit the one-handed keyboard, just tap on the expanse of space on the empty side of the keyboard.
iOS 11: QuickType keyboard
Users of iPads (except the 12.9-inch iPad Pro) will discover that the software keyboard is radically different in iOS 11. This is the new QuickType keyboard, which attempts to speed your typing by reducing the number of times you have to toggle to a second (or third) set of keys in order to type numbers and symbols.
iOS 11’s QuickType keyboard.
On the QuickType keyboard, above each key’s primary label is a different symbol in a smaller type size and shaded gray. This is the alternate character for that key. To type an alternate character, you tap on the key and then, while maintaining contact on the glass with your fingertip, you slide your finger slightly downward. An animation on the keyboard shows you “pulling down” the keycap to reveal the alternate character in the type size and color of the primary keys.
In iOS 10, to type the numeral six you’d need to tap the .?123 button, tap the 6, and then tap the ABC button to return to the normal keyboard. In iOS 11, you simply tap on the Y key and slide your finger down, activating the number 6.
Other shortcuts found on the iPad’s software keyboard—sliding up on the comma and period keys to generate single and double quotation marks—still work, which is a little strange since they’ve got their own equivalents on the new keyboard. Call it an Apple concession to the muscle memory of iPad typists.
It took me a while to get to the QuickType keyboard. There’s a lot of learned behavior to be unlearned. But replacing three taps with a sliding tap? Once we all get used to QuickType, it’s going to be a major productivity boost to all iPad typists.
Apple’s stock keyboard provides a special mode designed to make thumb-typing with larger iPhones easier without worrying about losing the grip on the phone.
Available on larger-screened iPhones with iOS 11 or later, but not on iPad, this special typing mode shrinks the keys and moves them closer to your thumb.
Here’s how to enable and use the one-handed keyboard on iPhone.
Why use one-handed keyboard
iOS 11 makes it far easier to compose messages with one hand because the compressed keyboard is tantamount to the size of the standard keyboard on a four-inch iPhone.
It makes it easy to reach all of the letters on larger-screened iPhones and is perfect for accessibility concerns. Plus, this cool typing mode caters to both left and right-handed users.
One-handed typing on the fly
iOS’s input switcher menu provides quick shortcuts for one-handed typing.
1) Bring up the keyboard on your iPhone.
2) If you have just one keyboard installed, tap and hold the Emoji icon in the bottom-left corner of the keyboard to bring up the input switcher, as with any other keyboard. If you have multiple keyboards enabled, tap and hold the Globe icon instead, then switch to the stock iOS keyboard.
3) Use the orientation icons at the bottom of the input switcher menu to shrink and snap the keyboard to either side of the screen or to revert back to the standard full width keyboard.
Here’s what the orientation icons do, from left to right:
- Snap the keyboard to the left—tap the leftmost orientation icon
- Snap the keyboard to the right—tap the rightmost orientation icon
- Re-center the keyboard & make it fullwidth—tap the middle orientation icon
Whether you’re holding a coffee in one hand and your iPhone in the other or have smaller hands making it cumbersome to type with a larger-screened iPhone, you’ll find the one-handed keyboard practical to use.
TIP: If you cannot be bothered to reset the keyboard size by bringing up the input switcher menu, just tap the arrow icons present on both sides of the keyboard to quickly re-center and enlarge the keyboard.
NOTE: If you’re currently using a third-party keyboard, you will need to choose the standard iPhone keyboard from the input switcher menu before one-handed typing can be enabled.
Making one-handed keyboard the default
You can make a left or right one-handed keyboard the default optioning in order to avoid having to bring up the switcher menu every time you want to type something in one-handed mode.
1) Launch the Settings app on your iPhone.
2) Tap General → Keyboard → One-Handed Keyboard.
3) Choose among the following options:
- Disabled—Always launch the stock keyboard in full-width mode
- Left—Always launch the stock keyboard in left-handed mode
- Right—Always launch the stock keyboard in right-handed mode
After selecting either a Left or Right option, your iPhone will remember it as the default option. As mentioned, this is particularly handy if you’d like to use left or right-handed typing every time you bring up the stock keyboard.
Of course, you can always use the orientation icons in the input switcher menu to override your defaults and switch between left or right-handed keyboard on the fly.
TIP: To quickly change your defaults right from the keyboard, hit the Keyboard Settings option at the top of the input switcher menu. Doing so takes you directly to the Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards section, saving you a few taps.
And that’s all there’s to it, ladies and gents.
Wrapping it all up
You’ll find that thumb-typing is way easier on larger iPhones.
Not only that, but not having to over-extend your thumb when typing also reduces the risk of losing the grip on your iPhone, which can be hazardous when walking down the sidewalk.
What are your thoughts on the one-handed keyboard? Do you like it or not, and why? And, would you agree that it takes away some of the sting resulting from thumb-typing on a larger-screened iPhone?

As part of the new iOS 11 software update, Apple introduced the function to help those of us who struggle to keep up with the size of the phone keyboards as iPhone screens grow.
The feature basically makes the keyboard shrink to around three-quarters of the screen, meaning you can reach more of the keys with just one thumb.
So how do you activate this keyboard?
- Head to Settings > General > Keyboard
- You’ll see under the list a button for One-Handed Keyboard.
- Click and choose whether you want the keyboard for your left or right hand.

You’ll find some surprises on the iOS 11 keyboard, including Key Flicks on iPad.
You’ve updated your iPhone or iPad to iOS 11. Along with an array of new features and enhancements come new tricks for the onscreen keyboard.
On an iPhone, you can shrink the keyboard so it appears to the left or right side of the screen, allowing you to type with one hand. On an iPad, you can flick keys on the standard alphabet keyboard to type numbers and symbols without having to switch to a different layout.
Let’s check out how to use the new keyboard in iOS 11.
1. Upgrade to iOS 11
First, you may want to confirm that you’ve updated your device to iOS 11. To do this, jump to Settings > General > Software Update. Your device will either tell you that your software is up to date or provide the option to download the latest update. Make sure you have iOS 11 or higher.

We’ll open Notes for this example. Start a new note, and the keyboard appears. While in portrait mode, hold down the emoji or globe button until you see a menu displaying three different keyboard layouts. The center layout is the current one, with the keyboard taking up the entire width of the screen.
To switch the keyboard to the left, tap on the first layout icon. The keyboard moves to the left, making it easier for you to type with your left thumb while holding your phone in your left hand. Tap the emoji icon again and tap on the third layout icon. The keyboard moves to the right so you can hold the phone and type more easily using just your right thumb.
Tap the white arrow to the left or right of the keys to return to the full keyboard layout.
3. Make it the Default
To make the one-handed keyboard your default, go to Settings > General > Keyboard > One-Handed Keyboard. Choose Left or Right, depending on your preference, and the keyboard will always appear in that mode until you return to the same setting and select Off.
4. iPad Key Flicks
5. Uppercase Mode
Jump to uppercase mode by tapping twice on the Caps Lock key. The same numbers and special characters are accessible whether you’re in uppercase or lowercase mode.
6. Turn it Off
Not crazy about the new flick trick? No worries, you can turn it off. Go to Settings > General > Keyboard. Then just turn off the option for “Enable Key Flicks,” and your keyboard reverts to the old style.
