How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller for pc gaming

If you enjoy using a PS4 controller for PC gaming, you’ll be glad to know that there are a few ways to connect your PS4 controller to your Windows 10 PC.

Two of these methods involve a wired connection (via a micro-USB cable), and the third involves pairing your controller wirelessly via Bluetooth .

Here’s how to connect your PS4 controller to a PC in three different ways, and how to reconnect your PS4 controller to your PS4 console.

How to connect PS4 controller to PC with a USB

If you want to connect your PS4 controller with a micro-USB cable (the same cable you use to charge the controller), you have two options: via Steam or the DS4 Windows Utility.

Connect via Steam

If you’re a PC gamer, chances are you have a Steam account, which you can use to connect a PS4 controller.

1. Open the Steam app and click the Big Picture Mode icon in the top-right. It looks like a square with two arrows pointing out.

2. Once in Big Picture Mode, select the gear-shaped Settings icon at the top-right.

3. Under the Controller tab, click Controller Settings.

4. Check the box for PlayStation Configuration Support.

5. Plug the PS4 controller into your PC using the micro-USB cable. Make sure the backlight on the controller glows to indicate that there’s a connection.

6. Steam should automatically detect and configure your controller. Click it when it appears at the bottom of the page.

Connect via DS4 Windows Utility

If you want to use your wired controller with a non-Steam game, this is another option.

1. In a web browser on your PC, go to the DS4 Windows website. Click Download Now.

2. You’ll be redirected to Github. Find and click the DS4Windows.zip file, then download it onto your computer.

3. Find the downloaded .zip file on your computer and open it, then double-click DS4Updater and click Extract All.

4. Pick a location for the files to be extracted to. It should be a location that you can find easily.

5. Once extracted, open the location you picked and double-click DS4Windows. If you’re asked to confirm that you want to run the program, click Run.

6. You’ll be asked where you want to save the program’s files. If you don’t care where they go, pick Appdata. If you want to be able to move them around, pick Program Folder and select a location.

7. Once you’ve picked a spot to save the files, click Step 1: Install the DS4 Driver and let the program install its files. If you’re asked whether you’d like to install the software, click Install.

You can now use the PS4 controller on your PC with a micro-USB cable, although you may need to restart your computer first.

How to connect PS4 controller to PC with Bluetooth

If your PC supports Bluetooth, you can pair and connect your controller wirelessly.

1. Open your PC’s search menu (you can press the Windows key + Q to open it immediately) and search for Bluetooth.

2. Select Bluetooth and other devices settings in the search results.

3. Make sure your computer has Bluetooth enabled by setting the switch labeled Bluetooth to On.

4. Hold down the Playstation and Share buttons on your controller until the backlight starts flashing.

5. On your PC, click Add Bluetooth or other device, and select Bluetooth.

6. You’ll see your PS4 controller listed as Wireless Controller. Click it to finalize the connection. If you’re asked for a passcode, enter 0000.

How to reconnect controller to PS4 console

To reconnect a PS4 controller to your PS4 console after using it with a PC, you’ll need to physically connect the controller to the console with a USB.

Then, press the PS button on the controller. Once you’ve followed these steps, you can remove the USB cable and use your controller wirelessly.

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller for pc gaming

Using DualShock 4 PS4 controller on PC is not for everyone. We congratulate you for choosing to live the analog life rather than succumbing to the tricky hand of a keyboardist. Of all the options available, the PS4 controller has become one of the team’s favorite PC gaming controllers, largely because it feels great in your hands. The design retains the classic shape of the DualShock controller, but includes joysticks and triggers that are better suited to modern shooters and action games than its predecessor, though not as sensationally exciting as the PS5’s DualSense controller.

Unfortunately, the DualShock 4’s use of generic DirectInput controllers, as opposed to the XInput that Xbox controllers use, means that using a PS4 controller on PC isn’t as easy as connecting an Xbox gamepad. It takes a bit more work to get the DualShock 4 working on PC, but thanks to Steam, the PC gaming community, and an (optional) official Bluetooth dongle, things get easier. If Steam is your first choice, native Steam support makes it as plug-and-play as an Xbox gamepad.

How to use the PS4 DualShock controller on Steam

Steam, the popular game showcase and launcher, has released an update that will allow you to use the PS4 DualShock controller on your PC when running the app. You can easily connect Dualshock 4 controller and control your PC games. You can control Steam’s TV-compatible Big Picture mode with DualShock 4, and your games will now display PS4 button prompts in-game.

To use the PS4 DualShock controller on your PC on Steam, load Steam and check for updates. Once the latest update is installed, plug in your DualShock 4 (or connect via Bluetooth) and voila! Unfortunately, this solution doesn’t work very well for everyone. To find out how to use a PS4 DualShock controller on your PC without Steam, read below.

How to use PS4 controller on PC

Download DS4Windows

While using the PS4 DualShock 4 controller on your PC is quite easy, it is not completely plug and play as you need to install additional software to make it work on your PC.

The software is called DS4Windows and it makes connecting the PS4 controller to your PC incredibly easy. Basically, it tricks your PC into thinking the connected DualShock 4 is a Windows-compatible Xbox 360 controller.

To get it from the DS4Windows website, simply download the latest version from the GitHub page.

Install DS4Windows

Locate the downloaded zip file, right click on it and select “Extract All…”.

A window will appear asking where you want to extract the files. You can extract it to the folder where you downloaded the ZIP file or choose a different folder.

Once the files are extracted, the destination folder will open and you will see two files. One, DS4Updater.exe, is a program that updates the DS4Windows program with the latest drivers, so it’s worth running this file if you run into problems later.

Double-click the second file, DS4Windows.exe, to begin the setup process that will get the PS4 Dualshock controller up and running on your PC.

Configure DS4Windows

When you start DS4Windows for the first time, you will be asked where you want your settings and profiles to be saved; we recommend that you use the default selection of ‘Appdata’.

A new window will open. Click “Install DS4 Driver” to use PS4 DualShock driver on Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.

If you have Windows 7 or earlier, you will also need to click Install Driver 360.

Connect the PS4 controller to your PC via USB

Now you can connect your PS4 DualShock 4 controller to your PC. You can do this in two ways: via a USB cable or via Bluetooth.

To connect the PS4 DualShock controller to your PC via USB cable, all you need is a regular micro USB cable, the same one that comes with many modern smartphones.

Once you have connected the cable to both the DualShock controller and your PC, Windows should recognize it and you will be able to play PC games with the PS4 controller.

Connect PS4 controller to your PC via Bluetooth

One of the best things about using the PS4 DualShock 4 controller on your PC is that you can use it wirelessly, giving you a lot more flexibility when gaming.

The PS4 DualShock 4 controller uses Bluetooth, so you’ll need to make sure your PC or laptop has a built-in Bluetooth receiver. If not, you can purchase a USB Bluetooth dongle such as the Tiny USB 2.0 Bluetooth Mini Wireless Adapter; Not only is it small enough to discreetly plug into your PC, but it’s also pretty cheap at just £2.99 (about $4.55, AU$6.40).

To connect the PS4 controller via Bluetooth, press and hold the center PS button and the Share button for three seconds until the light bar on top of the controller starts flashing.

Next, open the Bluetooth settings on your PC. In Windows 10, click the speech bubble icon on the taskbar at the bottom right corner of your screen. This will open the Action Center – click “Bluetooth” there and then select “Wireless Controller”.

You may be prompted to enter a pairing code; in this case, enter 0000. The PS4 DualShock controller will now connect wirelessly to your PC.

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller for pc gaming

Sony’s DualShock 4 controller is actually just a standard Bluetooth gamepad. You can pair it with any Bluetooth-enabled PC and use the DualShock 4 controller to play games. Here’s how.

Because the DualShock 4 controller is Bluetooth, you may not even need any extra hardware to get up and running. Heck, even Microsoft’s wireless Xbox controllers require a special adapter.

That said, Microsoft’s Xbox controllers still work best for PC gaming, as they’re officially supported by Microsoft and many games support Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers in particular. If you’re buying a controller for PC gaming instead of just using one you have lying around, you should probably get an Xbox controller. But if you already have a PlayStation 4 controller lying around, here’s how to set it up with your PC.

Pair Your Controller Wirelessly or Plug It In

When you connect your DualShock 4 controller to a PlayStation 4 via a USB cable, the controller automatically pairs with the console. To connect your PlayStation 4 controller with a PC, you’ll need to put it in Bluetooth pairing mode.

Xbox 360 controllers–and now Xbox One controllers, now that Microsoft has finally released the necessary drivers–are usually best for PC gaming. Many PC games are designed specifically to work with Xbox controllers. Many games also require “xinput” input, which Xbox controllers provide, but other types of controllers don’t.

If you’re using a a PS4 controller with an emulator to play older games, you could easily configure the emulator to accept the controller’s button presses. If you’re using it with a PC game, you may need to open the PC game’s control-settings and configure the game to respond to the controller’s inputs.

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller for pc gaming

But for games that expect an Xbox controller, you may have to emulate xinput. This will convert the PS4 controller’s input to the equivalent Xbox button presses, and games will “just work” with the DualShock 4 just like they would with an Xbox controller. They’ll just think you’re just using an Xbox controller.

Sony hasn’t released any official drivers for the PlayStation 4 controller on a PC, so there’s no official way to do this. There are tools for emulating xinput with a PS4, but they’re unofficial, third-party tools developed by the community.

We recommend the free Input Mapper program. This tool will also helpfully show the battery level of your controller, which is something you won’t normally be able to see in Windows.

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller for pc gaming

Download and install Input Mapper to your PC. Open it up, and click the controller-shaped “Profiles” icon at the left side of the Input Mapper window, and then click “New Profile.” The “Emulate virtual controller” option will be on by default, and your PS4 controller should now be functioning as an Xbox controller. You shouldn’t have to change any other settings.

Open a game that expects an Xbox controller, and it should just work. Any in-game prompts will still tell you to use the Xbox’s Y, B, A, and X buttons instead of the triangle, circle, square, and X buttons, but those buttons will function as the equivalent Xbox ones.

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller for pc gaming

The xinput emulation only works when InputMapper is open, so you’ll need to leave this program open when playing games. However, if you click the “Settings” icon at the left side of the program, you can tell it to “Start With Windows” and “Start Minimized”. It will then start when you boot your PC and run in the background, so you’ll always be ready to go.

InputMapper also does other useful things, such as enabling the “Trackpad as mouse” feature, which allows you to use the controller’s trackpad as a mouse in Windows. You can even customize the color of the controller’s lightbar and configure macros.

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller for pc gaming

You’ll need to pair your the controller with your PlayStation 4 before you can use it with your console again. To do so, just plug the controller back into your PS4 using its USB cable. It’ll automatically pair with your console. To make it work with your PC afterwards, you’ll need to pair it with your PC again from the Bluetooth window. It’s a small hassle, but worth it to easily use your gamepad on multiple devices.

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller for pc gaming

Back when Sony first announced that the DualShock 4 would work with Windows, PC gamers across the internet cheered in unison. Unfortunately, it’s not exactly the plug-and-play solution we had hoped for. While it’s true that the PS4’s controller is recognized by Windows (and OS X) right out of the box, existing games don’t automatically work with the gamepad. Thankfully, there is an application available that maps the DualShock 4’s controls directly to Microsoft’s XInput API — effectively tricking games into thinking you’re using an Xbox 360 controller.

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller for pc gaming

To get started, head on over to the InputMapper website, and download the latest version. From here, simply run the installer, and agree to the terms and conditions. Once everything is finished, connect your DualShock 4 to your PC over USB or Bluetooth. Keep in mind, the USB method is much more reliable. The wireless connection method is infamously flakey on PC, and it seems to depend heavily on your chipset and drivers. If you’re having issues, default to the USB connection, and close out all other applications.

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller for pc gaming

Next, launch the InputMapper app. At this point, the DualShock 4 should be recognized in the application, and it should function identically to an Xbox 360 controller in most cases. However, some oddball games have some compatibility issues. You might need to go into the settings, and toggle the checkbox labeled “Use Exclusive Mode.” Otherwise, the standard controller functions are completely operational.

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller for pc gaming

If you’d like to customize your experience a bit, you can go into the Profiles pane, and you’ll be brought to a window filled with buttons and sliders. Here, you’ll be able to change the color of the light bar, remap your buttons, tweak the rumble settings, and even set-up custom macros.

Keep in mind, this is still a work in progress. As it stands, you still need to launch the program every time you want to play a game. It’s a bit of a hassle, but that’s a relatively minor issue, since you can set it to launch minimized whenever Windows boots up. It’s also worth noting that this app is designed to mimic the Xbox 360 controller, so the button graphics in-game will show as A and B instead of X and O. If you’re looking for seamless integration, you need to either use a PS4, or wait for more PC games to ship with native DS4 support.

If you already use an Xbox 360 controller on your PC, there’s no reason to switch unless you have a strong personal preference for the feel of the DualShock 4. Getting everything up and running takes a little bit of effort, and it’s still more prone to issues than the Xbox One or 360 controllers. Most PC gamers shouldn’t bother taking the plunge, but this is a viable solution for anyone dead set on playing PC games with Sony‘s new controller.

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller for pc gaming

If you want to use a PS4 controller on PS5 we can help you set up a second controller for the newer PlayStation without having to buy a second pad. That said, while it is possible there are also some quite huge caveats so you might want to start saving in the long run. However, in the meantime, here’s everything you need to know about using a PS4 controller on PS5.

How a PS4 controller works with PS5

You can use a PS4 controller with PS5 easily, but the downside is you can only use your PS4 pad to play PS4 games on PS5. You cannot use your DualShock 4 to play any PS5 specific games and that’s because of all the PS5 specific features according to Sony: “We believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller,” says Sony in a statement on the PlayStation blog. This also extends to “PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers” too.

If you do sync up a PS4 pad with your PS5, if you try and play anything designated as a PS5 game it’ll flash up a little warning saying “PS5 games can’t be played using the DUALSHOCK 4”.

Thankfully, the benefits of using the PS5 controller are seriously worth it. You’ll just need to buy a second if you want to play co-op or simply have a spare to switch out.

How to pair your PS4 controller with PS5

For PS4 titles, syncing up a PS4 controller is really simple and easy. All you need to do is plug it into your PS5 via a charging cable, and pick which of the PS5 users you want to use it. Et voila, it’s that easy. You can then unplug the cable and continue playing PS4 games on PS5 with your trusty ol’ PS4 controller.

You’ll also find that most PS4 headsets work on Sony’s new console, but if you fancy getting the freshest audio experience, then we’d check out the latest picks on our best PS5 headset guide.

  • You’ll need to completely charge the controller at least once a year to keep it functioning properly.
  • Battery life varies depending on how you use the controller and the environment in which the controller is used and stored.
  • To charge while the system is in rest mode, select an option other than [Off] in (Settings) > [Power Save Settings] > [Set Features Available in Rest Mode] > [Supply Power to USB Ports].

We recommend using the original one because not all USB cables support the same functions (could be charge-only, for example), so even if the one you are using seems to work perfectly fine for other devices, this may not be the case for PS4's safe mode. If you don't have your original cable, then you can try different ones you have at home until you find one that works.

Another possible explanation is that the USB port is damaged and needs to be repaired – in this case, we recommend contacting Sony.

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller for pc gaming

The new PS4 is equipped with a DualShock 4 controller, which helps to play game on TV, PC, or other devices. You need to connect the controller to PC first if you’d like to use it; it’s not a big deal. However, the problem occurs during the process – users said their PS4 controller won’t connect to PC. Don’t worry, this problem can be fixed easily by following ways.

Oops, PS4 Controller Won’t Connect to PC

The PS4 device comes with a DualShock 4 (DS4) controller, which is similar to the classic PlayStation controller; it consists of a directional pad, two sticks, four triggers, and triangle, cross, circle, and square buttons. What’s more, there’s a directional pad on the front and a PlayStation Move-like “light bar” at the top. (MiniTool Solution is a company that specializes in computer/disk problem solving and data protection.)

But, the connection of DS4 controller to PC is not as easy as Xbox controller. Many people said that their PS4 controller won’t connect to PC and they need useful solutions to fixing it.

In generally, you have 3 ways to connect your PS4 controller to computer:

  • Pair PS4 controller with PC through a wired connection.
  • Pair PS4 controller with PC through a wireless connection.
  • Pair PS4 controller with PC through Bluetooth.

PS4 controller won’t connect to PC Bluetooth or PS4 controller won’t connect to PC wired/wireless means you can’t play your favorite games by using the controller; this can drive the gamers crazy. So I summarize the following three ways that can help users get out of trouble when PC won’t recognize PS4 controller. (How to fix external hard drive not showing up/recognized?)

#1. Connect the Controller via USB

The first way to try when finding PS4 controller not connecting to PC is connecting the controller by using a USB cable.

  1. Turn on your PS4 as usual.
  2. Insert one end of the USB cable into the back of the PS4; plug the other end into the DS4 controller.
  3. Wait for some time (about 30

If your PS4 controller won’t connect to PC with USB, you can find another USB cable to try again or follow the methods below.

#2. Reset the PS4 Controller

If your PS4 controller is still not connecting, you may as well try to fix the problem by resetting PS4 controller.

How to reset a PS4 controller:

  1. Turn off your PS4 properly.
  2. Cut off the internet by unplugging the Ethernet cable or wireless router.
  3. Turn over the controller to the rear and look for the reset button, which is a tiny hole located next to the screw beside the L2 button.
  4. Insert a thin pin, paperclip, or something you can poke into the slot carefully.
  5. Push the reset button inside the hole for a few seconds (about five seconds) and then release it.
  6. Connect the DS4 controller to PS4 via the USB cable.
  7. Turn on the PS4 and press the PS4 button on the center of the controller to resync until you hear a beep sound.

  2. Go to Settings -> enable Hide DS4 controller -> expand the window by dragging the corner -> click Controller/Driver Setup in blue.
  3. Minimize the window with a picture of a controller (don’t close it).
  4. Navigate to Manage Bluetooth Device -> hold share button & PS button for 3 seconds.
  5. Click to pair the DS4 controller appeared in the list.

#4. Re-enable Bluetooth

If your PS4 controller is connected to Windows PC through Bluetooth but it’s not detected, you should also try to fix the problem by re-enabling the Bluetooth: disable the computer’s Bluetooth (from the Windows Action Center or from the Windows Settings menu) -> wait for a few seconds -> enable it again -> try to pair it to your device again.

That’s all about what you should do when PS4 controller won’t connect to PC.

It is straightforward to get started. You will need to own a Personal Computer, USB cable, and a DualShock 4 controller, of course.

Unfortunately, PS4 controllers are not natively supported for wired connection on Windows. However, it’s easy to get past that obstacle. You would need to download a software called “DS4Windows” from GitHub. Once downloaded, extract the Zip file to any folder you want. In the extracted folder, you would find two files, “DS4Updater.exe” and “DS4Windows.exe”. Open the second file.

Now, you need to set up DS4Windows. You’ll be asked to choose a location to save your settings and profiles, go ahead with the default option. Now, it will prompt you to install the DS4 driver. This will work for Windows 8 up to 10. However, if you have an older version of Windows, select the “Install 360 Driver” option.

You are all ready now to connect your PS4 controller to your PC. Use the micro-USB cable to connect it, and you are good to go! When you open any game such as Fortnite, the controller would be automatically recognized, and you can start playing.

Why use a PS4 controller on a PC?

There are many reasons why you should use a PS4 controller on your PC.

Thus, many people are shifting to gaming PCs. However, not everyone wants to start using a mouse and a keyboard for gaming immediately. For some, using a PS4 controller allows for a smoother transition.

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller for pc gaming

If you prefer to game on PC for unlocked frame rates and ultrawide monitors, you might still prefer using a controller instead of a keyboard and mouse. Maybe you like using the same DualShock 4 controller you also use on the couch with your PlayStation, maybe you don’t want to subject your teammates to the clackity clack of your mechanical keyboard, or maybe you just find a controller more comfortable.

We all expect the Xbox controllers to work on PC since they’re made by Microsoft, who probably also made the operating system on your PC. Did you know you can use PlayStation controllers on your PC as well? It’s pretty simple to set one up and get gaming, so let’s show you how to do that.

There are three ways you can connect your PS4 controller to your PC

Once you’ve got your DualShock 4 controller in hand, here’s how to get it working on your PC.

Wired via USB

There are two main methods to connect your DualShock 4 controller to your PC, depending on which game launcher you’re planning on using. Steam has full support for the PlayStation 4’s controllers, so you can get going with the minimum of fuss. If you want to play games on other launchers without adding those games to Steam, you’ll need to install another program to help. We’ll walk you through both methods.

Steam:

  1. Open Steam, then right-click on the icon in your taskbar. Click on Settings from the menu that appears

DS4Windows:

  2. Click on DS4Windows.zip and download it to your computer

Wireless via Bluetooth for DualShock 4 controller

If your PC or laptop has Bluetooth, it’s even easier to get your DualShock 4 controller working. It’ll also work for the new DualSense controller for the PS5, but might not be supported for every game.

  1. Click on the Notification bar icon at the bottom right of your desktop
  2. Right-click on Bluetooth and then select Settings
  3. Make sure the toggle under Bluetooth is set to On
  4. Hold down the PlayStation and Share buttons on your DS4 controller until the backlight starts to flash
  5. On the PC, click on Add Bluetooth or other device

Now your DS4 controller should work across all of your games. They might not show the correct button prompts if they weren’t coded to show PlayStation button icons.

Wireless via PlayStation dongle

If you picked up one of the DUALSHOCK 4 USB Wireless Adaptors from Sony when they weren’t at exorbitant prices, you can use that to use your DS4 on your PC. Plug it into a USB port, press the PlayStation and Share buttons until your controller lights up, then push in the dongle so the light flashes, and it should auto-pair and install the driver needed for the DS4.

Now you know how to use your PlayStation 4 controllers on your PC. Happy fragging.

No, DS4Tool will not solve the problem. I’ve had it installed for weeks for other games I play on steam and the results are the same. (Though it couldn’t hurt to have it installed as well, DS4Tool is a handy thing to have).
HOWEVER, you may have plugged in your DS4 after the game had already launched, which may be the problem.

Personally, I was playing with a DS4 that was all set up and plugged in prior to starting the game and had zero issues. After a half hour or so, I figured I’d switch controllers since the one that came with my PS4 has a mildly irritating squeak when you pull the triggers down.

Unplugged the first DS4 and plugged the backup in (in mid game mind you), and kept playing. Soon as I did that I noticed the pausing bug started happening.

Anyway, just try having it all plugged in before you run the game, maybe that will work for you guys. Can’t say it’ll work for sure, but it wasn’t doing thepause bug until I changed controllers.

I use the DS4Windows fork of the DS4 Xinput wrapper, and once in a GRAND while, I get insane lag, but that hasn’t happened for a few weeks. I also use some wonky Chinese Bluetooth dongle; I forget which Bluetooth revision it is. Whichever is the most recent standard. An older one I had kept losing connectivity.

DualShock 2 controllers with a generic USB adapter work fine, too. I was also able to use a Sega Saturn controller with a USB adapter.

Fix for Bluetooth dropout ‘bug’ when using DS4Windows software with DS4 wireless controller.

This is a late addition, but it might help somebody.

The Problem:
Although DS4 controller has established a BT connection with your computer, your game often fails to detect wireless controller commands.

The Reason:
DS4Windows needs to be open whilst controller is being turned on. Anytime you turn off your controller, or use it via cable, DS4Windows loses bluetooth functionality and will not automatically reconnect. Also DS4Windows will not indicate any loss of BT contact with controller until it has been restarted.

The Fix:
1. Exit game and turn off DS4 controller
(Press and hold PS button till light is off)
2. Close DS4Windows
3. Check your computer does have a BT connection with your controller
(For Win8.1: Settings > Change PC settings > PC and devices > Bluetooth)
4. Open DS4Windows. Click Controllers tab. it should say: ‘no controllers connected’)
5. Turn on controller using its PS button
(Light flashes, then glows steady blue,
DS4Windows now shows a controller ID with a BT status icon)
6. Minimise DS4Windows
(Don’t close its window)
7. Open Steam
8. Check Steam detects controller via BT
(press PS button so that Steam goes to Big Picture mode.
9. Open Game from Steam library
10. Hopefully it doesn’t make a liar of me!

I’ve searched online in multiple topics, there’s something about the drivers and the microsoft net frameworks that might cause that, my controller always worked with usb cable, but now that i bought a BT dongle, i couldn’t connect, it would always disconnect in the second after.

Sony’s PS4 DualShock 4 controller is the best-selling controller. This was revealed in a recent report from research company NPD Group (via ResetEra) that broke down sales of video games, consoles, accessories, and gaming hardware for April 2018. In addition to this, it stated that spending on controllers has increased by 7 percent in April 2018 compared to a year ago and is 23 percent up year to date. The PS4 DualShock 4 Wireless Controller Black was April’s top-selling accessory and remains the best-selling accessory year to date. The PS4 DualShock 4 Wireless Controller Black is now the all-time best-selling gamepad in dollar sales.

With over 75 million PS4 consoles sold worldwide, it’s safe to say that the DualShock 4’s sales is just as good the world over. What’s interesting is that NPD singles out the black version. This implies that it could be selling even better if other editions are considered.

The DualShock 4 isn’t the only bright spot in Sony’s sales. the PS4 was the best-selling console in April and remains the best-selling console hardware platform year to date, surpassing the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. It generated the highest April unit sales for the month since the Nintendo Wii in April 2009 and the highest April dollar sales for a console since Nintendo Wii in April 2008.

Furthermore, sales of headsets grew by 89 percent in April 2018 compared to a year ago with headset spending increased by 80 percent. NPD noted the Xbox One Ear Force Stealth 600 Wireless Headset from Turtle Beach is the best-selling headset for both April 2018 as well as 2018 year to date.

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller for pc gaming

The Epic Games Store has quickly become one of the most popular storefronts for PC games. However, the Epic launcher doesn’t have particularly strong controller support. This becomes a problem for specific games that aren’t built around typical mouse and keyboard input. Thankfully, there is a way to enable PS4 controller compatibility with your favorite games. Here’s how to use a DualShock 4 to play Epic Games Store games.

How to use PS4 DualShock 4 controller with Epic Games Store

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller for pc gaming

The Epic Games Store does not have native support for the DualShock 4 yet. However, it’s still possible to use a PS4 controller to play games purchased through the Epic storefront. You either need to add the games through Steam, which does have DualShock 4 support, or use third-party software like DS4Windows.

Of these two solutions, playing your EGS games through Steam is the preferred solution. Most PC gamers are likely to have Steam already, and Valve’s storefront allows players to add non-Steam games to their library. Even better, this Steam throughput enables all manner of controllers, not just the DualShock 4. But if you don’t have Steam, you’ll have to rely on third-party software.

Whatever the case may be for you, we’ve broken down the process for each of these methods below.

Use Steam to play Epic Games Store games with PS4 controller

If you add a game purchased from the Epic Games Store to your Steam library, you’ll be able to play it with almost any modern controller. This means you can use the PS4 controller as well as a PS5 DualSense, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch Pro, or Steam controller. Best of all, the process is very straightforward:

  1. Open Steam, then head to your Library
  2. In the bottom left, click Add A Game
  3. Click Add a Non-Steam Game
  4. Select Browse, then navigate to the folder where the game is installed
    • The default directory for EGS games is C:\Program Files\Epic Games\
  5. In the directory of the game you want to add, select the executable (*.exe) file
  6. With the game selected, click the Add Selected Programs button

After that’s done, the game will show up in your Steam library. You may need to find it in the Uncategorized section. Assuming the game itself supports controller input, you’ll be able to use any gamepad that Steam supports. As a bonus, you can keep your library neat and tidy by adding your own box art and cover image. Simply right click in the blank title bar to set a custom logo and background.

PS4 Controller compatibility with DS4Windows

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller for pc gaming

If you don’t have Steam, or if you simply prefer not to use it, you can enable PS4 controller compatibility for the Epic Games Store with programs like DS4Windows. It’s lightweight, it’s free, and most importantly, it enables the DualShock 4 to be used with any compatible game or Windows program. Here’s how it works.

  1. Head to the DS4Windows website
  2. Select Download Now, then download the latest version
  3. Open the zip file and extract the contents wherever you like
  4. Launch DS4Windows, select where to save profiles, then follow the instructions to install drivers
  5. Close the program, then restart the Epic Games Store launcher and/or your PC

For this to work properly, you’ll likely need to connect the gamepad through a USB cable. Alternatively, if your PC has Bluetooth connectivity, you can pair the controller wirelessly. Either way, it will need to be connected via cable or Bluetooth before it can be used. After that, you can use the DS4Windows software to customize your key bindings if you like. The software even supports the touch pad and rumble functions.

It’s a shame that the Epic Games Store doesn’t include native DualShock 4 support. Thankfully, you can still add and play EGS games through Steam for robust controller compatibility. Otherwise, software like DS4Windows will ensure your PlayStation 4 controller will work for any supported game or software.

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller for pc gaming

Sony’s approach with PlayStation controllers isn’t quite the same as Microsoft’s with Xbox.

The PlayStation 4’s so-called “DualShock 4” and the new PlayStation 5’s “DualSense” controllers have similar button layouts but they sport different looks. More importantly, the newer option introduces some advanced features. So while you can use either for PC gaming, there are reasons to explore upgrading to a DualSense if you’re still rocking something older.

Whichever controller you’re using, it’s pretty simple to get yourself connected. There are some added considerations with the DualSense (which we’ll get to), but let’s start with the DualShock 4. All you need is the controller and either a micro-USB cable — the one you use for charging is fine — or a Bluetooth receiver on your PC.

To go the wired route, simple connect the cable to your controller and then plug it into a USB port on your computer. (I’ve seen reports that USB 2.0 ports are your best bet, but I’ve had no issues with USB 3.0 ports personally.) And that’s it, provided you’re on Windows 10 or Apple computers using macOS Catalina or later.

For a wireless connection, you’ll need a Bluetooth receiver either built into your motherboard or in USB dongle form. To turn on the controller’s pairing mode, press and hold the PS button and Share button simultaneously for a few seconds. You’ll know pairing mode is active when the controller’s light bar starts flashing.

Once that’s done, jump over to your computer and open up the Bluetooth settings menu. You should be able to scan for new devices from there. Once the controller appears as an available device — it should be “Wireless Controller” — click that. You’ll know it worked if the light bar switches to a solid blue.

Just note that the Windows setup process with Bluetooth can be a little tricky. When you click the “Add Bluetooth or other device” option on the settings menu, a window pops up asking you what kind of device you want to connect. You might think the third option, “Everything else,” is the correct one since Xbox controller is one of the examples it offers. That’s not it, though. You actually need to click the first option, “Bluetooth.” The controller should appear as a pairing option there.

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller for pc gaming

The DualSense connection process is basically the same. For a wired connection, you’ll need a USB-C to USB-A (i.e. USB-C to standard USB) cord. Connect the C end to your controller and the A end to your PC, Windows or Mac, and that’s it.

For Bluetooth, it’s also the same deal: Press and hold the PS and Create buttons — Create is in the same spot as the DualShock 4’s Share button — until the controller’s lights start flashing. Then go into your Bluetooth settings and pair the “Wireless Controller” using the same process you would for a DualShock 4.

There’s just one issue: Because the DualSense is so new, not every game will recognize it. There’s a workaround, but you’ll need to install the Steam client to make it work. You see, Steam added beta support for the DualSense back in November, and then pushed that support into the non-beta version earlier in December.

That means Steam should automatically recognize your shiny, new PlayStation controller as soon as it’s connected. Emphasis on should. If Steam games aren’t playing nice with the DualSense, pop back into the Steam Settings menu, head to the Controller sub-menu, and click the “General Controller Settings” button.

First, click the checkbox you see for “PlayStation Configuration Support.” Then, look to the bottom of that menu. If you connected or paired your DualSense correctly, you should see PlayStation 5 Controller listed under the Detected Controllers list. Click on that, then click Identify. Your DualSense should give a little rumble of affirmation.

Only a handful of games support the controller’s more advanced features at this point — including Death Stranding, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and No Man’s Sky. But you should still be able to play any games that support a controller, just without stuff like gyroscopic controls and rumble features.

Of course, that only helps with Steam games. You do have the ability to add non-Steam games to your library, via the Games pulldown menu, but it’s not going to work with every game. For example, I can’t get Watch Dogs: Legion or Immortals: Fenyx Rising, which I own on Uplay, to run. But the Epic Games Store titles that I’ve tried seemed to work fine, albeit with limited support.

This will surely improve via updates. Remember that the PS5 and its DualSense controller both are still very new. Steam’s full, non-beta update for the controller arrived a month after the hardware launched and it already brings advanced features to a number of games, with more coming. It’s fair to expect that other storefronts like Uplay and Epic will add official support in time. But for now, prepare to deal with finicky workarounds like what we’ve described above.

Can You Use a PS4 Controller on Xbox Series X or S?

Despite some confusion on the matter, you can’t actually use a PS4 controller on your Xbox Series X or S. While PS4 controllers use Bluetooth just like Xbox controllers, your Xbox, regardless of generation, just isn’t set up to work with a PS4 controller. You can use a PS4 controller on a PS5, but only to play your old PS4 games.

If you want to play next-gen games with a PS4 controller, your best bet is cloud gaming through Xbox Game Pass cloud gaming on your phone, or Game Pass Ultimate on your PC.

Anyone with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership can use Xbox Cloud gaming with a Windows 10 PC, iPhone, or iPad, as well as Android devices, using a browser. Visit xbox.com/play via Microsoft Edge, Chrome, or Safari on your PC, iPhone, or iPad, and get started playing hundreds of Xbox Game Pass games.

How to Play Xbox Series X/S Games With a PS4 Controller

The easiest way to play Xbox Series X/S games with a PS4 controller is game streaming with Xbox Game Pass. This requires a PS4 controller, a subscription to Game Pass, and a compatible phone. You will pair your controller to the phone, stream Xbox Series X/S games to the phone, and play them using the PS4 controller.

On your PS4 controller, press and hold the PS button (in between the analog sticks) and the Share button simultaneously until the light bar starts blinking.

Enable Bluetooth on your phone if you haven’t already.

Navigate to Settings > Connected Devices on your phone.

Start playing your Xbox Series X/S game with your PS4 controller.

How to Play Xbox Series X/S Games With a PS4 Controller on PC

The vast majority of games that are available through the Game Pass Ultimate subscription are for Xbox One, but the same exact service also has Xbox Series X/S games and will move away from Xbox One titles with time. To play Xbox Series X/S games on your PC with a PS4 controller, all you have to do is set up your PS4 controller with your PC, download the game you want to play, and play it.

Here’s how to play Xbox Series X/S games on your PC with a PS4 controller:

Download and install the Xbox app on your PC if you haven’t done so already.

You can get the Xbox app straight from Microsoft.

Launch the Xbox app.

Click the game you want to play.

Both Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X games are available. Microsoft makes all of its first party titles available on PC, and select third party titles as well.

VGS English has released a video demonstrating how to use the PlayStation 4’s amazing controller on your PC, with the use of one wonderful app.

Wired Setup:

  1. Download the Inputmapper from the download page
  2. Follow the installation wizard and ensure all the necessary files are installed
  3. Plug in any DS4 via micro usb cable
  4. Enjoy playing Xbox 360 enabled games with your DS4!

Wireless setup:

  1. Go to your Bluetooth settings (it’s found under PC and devices under PC settings)
  2. Hold both the share and the PS button together until the Lightbar starts blinking. This makes it detectable on Bluetooth devices.
  3. Pair the controller by selecting it in the Bluetooth options
  4. Wait until it’s fully installed then begin playing.

The Dualshock 4 is certainly one of the best controllers available, and the truth is that no matter how advantageous a mouse & keyboard combo might be most of the time, some games are better with a controller. No matter how used PC gamers are to their own input devices, once you get used to using a controller some experiences will indeed benefit and enhance greatly.

The Xbox One controller is already being supported natively wired, and the upcoming dongle to be released by Microsoft alongside Windows 10 will allow the controller wireless support as well. Given that most games have support for the Xbox mappings the Xbox One controller does seem more appropriate, but hopefully developers will start mapping the DualShock 4 pretty soon. Having proper prompts displayed is always better.

S ony’s latest update to its PlayStation 4 console, version 7.00, brings a host of new conveniences that make it easier for players to add more players to their online party, adds chat transcription support, and improves audio quality thanks to some behind-the-scenes improvements.

But the most appealing feature might be the updated Remote Play service, which now works with both Android and iOS devices, controller support included. That means you’ve now got a way to free up the TV and still enjoy your PlayStation 4 games on your PC, Mac, smartphone, or tablet.

Still, there are a few footnotes to consider before you start gaming on a screen other than your TV. To use the PS4 Remote Play feature, you’ll need to configure a couple of things — besides your PS4, obviously.

What You Need For PlayStation 4 Remote Play

You’ll need a PC or Mac running the free PS4 Remote Play app (you can download it here). If you’re on an Android or iOS device, you’ll need to grab the Remote Play app from Google Play or the App Store.

You’ll also need a broadband internet connection, a DualShock 4 controller, and a PS4 game that doesn’t require a VR headset or a specialized controller. To minimize latency, you should use an Ethernet cable to connect your console to your wireless router or modem (you should do the same on the device you’re streaming to, if possible).

Prep Your PlayStation 4

Once you’ve installed the requisite PS4 Remote Play app from whatever app store you’re using, you’ll need to configure your PS4. First, update your PS4’s software to the most current version, 7.00. To do so, visit Settings > System Software Update, and let your console get to work. Then you’ll need to identify your console as the “primary” console. Visit Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PS4.

Next, enable Remote Play on the console itself. Visit Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings > Enable Remote Play. If you don’t want to walk over to your console to turn it on every time you want to get away from it, you can visit Settings > Power Save Settings > Set Features Available in Rest Mode, then select “Stay Connected to the Internet” and “Enable Turning On PS4 From Network.”

Next Up, Pairing Your Controller

So you’ve got your PS4 ready to go, and the PS4 Remote Play app installed on your remote device. Now it’s time to pair your DualShock 4 controller, either with a Micro-USB cable on a PC or Mac, or via Bluetooth on any Remote Play compatible device with Bluetooth support (or a Bluetooth adapter).

You can pair the controller to your PC either with a Micro-USB cable or via Bluetooth. First, find your PC’s Bluetooth settings by heading to Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices. Hold both the Share and PS button for four seconds until the controller’s light bar starts to flash. On your PC, select the plus to add a new Bluetooth device.

On your Mac, you can pair via Bluetooth, but you’ll need to be running the latest version of macOS Catalina, released earlier this week (though you might want to hold off on updating until all your apps are compatible). Put your controller in pairing mode, visit the System Preferences app on your Mac, hit the Bluetooth icon, and add your device.

iOS and Android devices can pair to your DualShock 4 the same way they pair with any traditional Bluetooth device. But you’ll need to be running Android 10, iOS 13, or iPadOS 13 to actually use the controller instead of the inferior on-screen controls.

Link Your Devices

After you’ve installed the PS4 Remote Play app and paired your DualShock 4 controller to your remote device, you’ll need to visit the console’s Remote Play Connection Settings page you visited earlier, and select Add Device.

You can fiddle with frame rate and resolution settings by picking Open Preferences in the Remote Play app on your remote device before you begin playing. On your remote device, open the app and select Start to locate and pair your device to your PS4. Then sign in with your PlayStation Network account and enjoy gaming your day away while someone else uses the TV to enjoy their stories.

Get an Accessory or Two

Sure, you’re all set up and ready to play, but if you’ve placed your smartphone in a precarious position while you’re playing, you’d be well-served with a key accessory: a phone mount. A search on Amazon for “PS4 phone mount” will yield a few options from obscure accessory makers, so make sure the mount will fit your phone model and read some customer reviews before you drop $15 on one.

That phone mount will allow you to clip your smartphone to your DualShock 4 controller, and adjust the viewing angle to fit your needs. If you plan on using Remote Play often, a phone mount might be the one missing piece of the puzzle that keeps you away from your TV for good.

If you enjoy gaming on both consoles and PC, maybe you would like to make the most out of your current gaming setup. Thanks to common standards like HDMI, Bluetooth and USB many components in your gaming setup are interchangeable and allow you to mix and match to find what works better for you. Read this article to find out how to use your PS4 controller with PC and a PS4 with a PC monitor.

Playing a number of PC games, such as Rocket League, Cuphead or Dark Souls , with a controller gives you much finer control over your movements. Here is what you need to set up PC and controller:

• Bluetooth-enabled computer or Bluetooth dongle

• Micro USB Cable

Since your PS4 controller and PC are perfectly compatible, the process is quite simple and fast. It is not truly plug-and-play, so you should start by downloading DS4 software . You can find the steps and additional installation information here.

For this software to work properly, you need to make sure that you have Microsoft .NET 4.5. If you do not have it already, download it from here.

You will also have to install Microsoft 360 Driver if you are running Windows 7. For Windows 7 SP1 and higher, this driver is already included.

Now, you are ready to connect your PS4 controller to a PC wirelessly via Bluetooth or wired using a micro-USB cable. For micro-USB connection, use a regular micro-USB cable. If you choose to use Bluetooth, press and hold the central PS button and Share button for 3 seconds until it flashes. Next, go to your Windows Bluetooth settings to finish setting up the device. PS4 will be displayed as “Wireless Controller”.

If you would like to play a game that is not available on PC, you do not need to be unplugging cables. Many modern monitors multiple HDMI ports so that you can have a PC and PS4 connected at the same time. PC monitors suit the needs of gamers who prefer FPS or other competitive games. As opposed to TVs, monitors are able to react to your movements faster.

To play a PS4 with a monitor, you most likely already have everything you need. However, there a few things you might need to consider. Here is what you will need:

• Speakers, headphones (in case of the monitor does not have speakers)

If your monitor has an HDMI output, you can simply use HDMI cable to connect PS4 to your display. If it does not have an HDMI port, go for a different type of connector. Use DVI output and an HDMI-to-DVI adapter, VGA with an HDMI-to-VGA adapter or Display Port with an HDMI-to-Display Port adapter.

To connect PS4 to PC with sound, you can easily use a pair of headphones with you console wirelessly using Bluetooth USB dongle. Alternatively, you can connect a headset to a controller via a 3.5 mm stereo jack cable.

It is easy to get the audio output through built-in speakers. If your console is connected to the monitor via HDMI, then everything will work over HDMI. For a display that does not have built-in speakers, you can also use any 3.5 mm stereo jack external audio device with it. In case your PS4 is connected via a DVI, VGA or Display Port, make sure to get an adapter with an audio splitter to be able to extract the audio.

By using a monitor for gaming instead of a TV you can definitely get more value for the money you already invested in your gaming equipment.

Overall, you can optimize your desk space and money with a combined setup. It saves time since you do not have to unplug cables and rearrange your equipment. The biggest advantage is using a single PC monitor to play both PS4 and PC so you can switch between different devices when you feel like switching games or platform.
