A watermark is a faded background image that displays behind the text in a document. You can use them to indicate a document’s state (confidential, draft, etc.), add a subtle company logo, or even for a bit of artistic flair. PowerPoint doesn’t have a built-in watermark feature like Word, but you can still add them with a text box.

How to Insert a Watermark into PowerPoint

It’s not quite as easy to add watermarks to PowerPoint as it is to Microsoft Word. However, you can add watermark text to the background of individual slides or all slides at once using the Master Slide function.

We’re going to look at how to add watermark text to all slides in a presentation by using the Master Slide feature. If you only want to add watermark text to an individual slide, you can skip the steps for going to the Slide Master.

First, switch to the “View” tab on the PowerPoint ribbon.

Click the “Slide Master” button. This brings up the master slide layout for all of the slides in your deck.

If you’re only inserting watermark text on a single slide, this is where you’d start; select the individual slide on which you want to insert the text rather than going to the slide master.

To insert the text or image you want to use as your watermark, click the “Insert” tab.

Or, you might want to head on over to the “Format” tab on the main PowerPoint ribbon to change settings like color, transformations, and more. It’s up to you!

Finally, decide whether you want the watermark to appear behind everything else on the slide. To do so, click the “Send Backward” button on the “Format” tab and choose “Send to Back.”

Once you’ve got your text the way you want it, it’s time to exit the master slide view if that’s what you’re using. Switch over to the “View” tab and then click “Normal” to go back to the normal slideshow view.

You’ll now see your watermark text on your slides.

If you inserted the text onto your master slide, any new slides you insert will have the same watermark text on them.

How to Remove a Watermark from PowerPoint

If you’d like to remove your watermark from PowerPoint, all you have to do is delete that text box.

Select the slide with the watermark (or head back over to the Master Slide view if that’s where you inserted the text box).

Click the text box.

How to use watermarks in powerpoint

Step 1

Open the Word document that contains the images you want to watermark.

Step 2

Select the first image you want to add a watermark to. Click the “Insert” tab, and then click the “WordArt” button in the Text group. Select your preferred Word Art style from the drop-down list.

Step 3

Click and drag the text box to your desired position on the image, and then enter the word or brief phrase you want to use as the watermark.

Step 4

Select the text you entered in the text box. Right-click the highlighted text and choose the “Font” option from the context menu. Select your preferred font style, size and color in the Font dialog box.

Step 5

Click the “Text Effects” button in the Font window. The Format Text Effects window opens. Select “Text Fill,” and then click and drag the Transparency slider bar to the right to increase the transparency of the watermark. Click “Close” to exit the Format Text Effects window, and then click “OK” in the Font dialog box to save the customized text.

Step 6

Alter the angle of the watermark. Click the “Format” tab, and then select the watermark by clicking one of the four sides of the text box. Click the “Rotate” button in the Arrange group, and then select “More Rotation Options.” Click the “Size” tab and enter your preferred angle in the Rotation field. Click “OK” to apply and save the new rotation.

Step 7

Repeat steps 2 through 6 to add a custom watermark to each picture in the document.

How to Insert a Built-In Watermark on a Specific Page

  1. Place your cursor in the page to which you want to add the watermark.
  2. Select the Design tab in the ribbon.
  1. Select Watermark in the Page Background group.
  1. Right-click the design you want in the drop-down menu, and then select Insert at Current Document Position from the shortcut menu.

The built-in watermark should appear on the page where you inserted your cursor.

How to Insert a Custom Watermark on a Specific Page

This section includes the basic steps for creating a custom watermark. If you have already created and inserted your custom watermark, you can skip to step 6.

  1. Select the Design tab in the ribbon (see figure 1).
  2. Select Watermark in the Page Background group (see figure 2).
  3. Select Custom Watermark from the drop-down menu.
  1. Create and customize your watermark in the Printed Watermark dialog box.
  1. Select the OK button.

Your custom watermark should be inserted in your whole document or current section. (Don’t worry, we will remove it soon.)

  1. Double-click the top of the page to open the Header & Footer tab.
  1. Click the watermark to select it. Small resizing handles will appear around the watermark when it is selected.
  1. Select the Design tab in the ribbon (see figure 1).
  2. Select Watermark in the Page Background group (see figure 2).
  3. Select Save Selection to Watermark Gallery in the drop-down menu.
  1. Type a name for your custom watermark in the Create New Building Block dialog box.
  1. Select the OK button.
  1. Select Watermark in the Page Background group (see figure 2).
  2. Select Remove Watermark from the drop-down menu.
  1. Double-click inside the page where you want to insert the custom watermark. (Note that double-clicking inside the page should close the Header & Footer tab.)
  2. Select Watermark in the Page Background group (see figure 2).
  3. Right-click your custom watermark in the drop-down menu, and then select Insert at Current Document Position from the shortcut menu.

Your custom watermark should now appear on your chosen page.

Pro Tip: After you save your document, an alert box will ask if you want to save changes to the Building Blocks file. This change is the custom watermark you added to the watermark gallery. Select Save if you want to reuse your custom watermark in other documents.

Step 1: Select your PDF document

Step 2: Add Text Watermark

Click the Add Text button at the top of the PDF page. You should see a text watermark being added.

Click on it to edit the text. Type ‘Draft’ or ‘Classified’ to try it out.

Step 3: Change text size, rotation and location on page

Click and drag the text watermark to change the location on the PDF page
Drag the rotation handle to rotate the text watermark.

Click and drag the resize handles found on the sides to change font size.

Step 4: Change text color, transparency and font family

Click on the text watermark to reveal its associated menu.

One can change the transparency of the watermark, making the text more or less opaque.
Watermark text color can also be configured, together with the font used for the text.

Step 2: Add Image Watermark

Click the Add Image button and select the image file to use as PDF watermark. Most popular image formats are all supported: JPG, JPEG, GIF, PNG, SVG.

Step 3: Rotate, resize or change position on page

Click and drag the image watermark to change the position on the PDF page.
Drag the rotation handle to rotate the text watermark.
Drag the resize handles found on the image sides to resize the image.

Step 4: Change transparency

Click on the image watermark to reveal the associated menu.
From the associated menu change the opacity of the watermark.

This article explains how to remove watermarks in Microsoft Word. This information applies to Word 2019, 2016, 2010, 2007, Word for Mac, Word for Microsoft 365, and Word Online.

How to Remove a Watermark in Word for Windows or Word Online

Watermarks in Word mark pages of your document, protect your content, and identify the status or security needs of your project. Removing them when they’ve completed their purpose is as easy as adding them in the first place.

Under the Design tab, select Watermark, located on the far right of the screen. Select Remove Watermark. In Word 2010 and Word 2007, Watermark is found under the Page Layout tab, and in the Page Background group.

If the watermark is still there, it's possible Word anchored the watermark in the header area if it's tied to a specific section. Double-click the header area, select the watermark itself, and then press Delete.

If your document includes sections that are not linked together, these steps must be repeated to remove the watermark from each independent section.

Click the Design tab. In the Page Background group, click Watermark to display the Insert Watermark box. Select No watermark. In Word for Mac 2011, click the Page Layout tab, select the Page Background group and then click Watermark.

If the watermark is still there, it may be anchored to the header in a specific section. The solution is the same as the Windows version of Word: Double-click the header area to open it, click the watermark and select Delete.

As with Word for Windows, if your Word for Mac document contains multiple sections and section breaks that are not linked and contain watermarks, you need to remove the watermark from each section individually by repeating the steps above.

The images below are from Adobe Acrobat Pro DC. These steps will also work in Adobe Acrobat 2020 and Adobe Acrobat 2017. Adobe’s free PDF display software, Acrobat Reader, doesn’t offer a way to add watermarks.

How to Insert Watermarks in PDFs with Adobe Acrobat

  1. Open the PDF to which you want to add the watermark.
  2. Select the Tools tab.
  1. Select Edit PDF in the Tools Center.
  1. Select Watermark in the Edit PDF toolbar.
  1. Select Add from the drop-down menu.

Skip to step 8 if your watermark is an image.

  1. Select the Text radio button if it is not already selected, and then type your watermark text into the text box.
  1. Adjust the font style, font size, underlining, color, and alignment, as necessary.

Skip to step 12 if your watermark is not an image.

  1. If your watermark is an image, select the File radio button.

Important Note: Watermark images have to be JPEG, BMP, or PDF files. (Sorry, no PNGs.)

  1. Select the Browse button.
  1. Locate and select your image in the Open dialog box, and then select the Open button.
  1. (Optional) Change the percentage in the Absolute Scale box if you want to adjust the scale of the image.
  1. (Optional) Adjust the rotation, opacity, and scale relative to the target page (which is the page or pages on which the watermark will be displayed, as shown in step 17).
  1. Select Appear behind page if you want the watermark located behind the text and images. Or, select Appear on top of page if you want the watermark located over the text and images.
  1. (Optional) Select Appearance Options to choose whether to show the watermark when printing, display the watermark on screen, and keep the position and size of the watermark the same when printing different page sizes.
  1. (Optional) Adjust the vertical and horizontal position of the watermark by inches, percent centimeters, millimeters, picas, or points.

Skip to step 20 if you don’t want your watermark to appear on a specific page or page range. The default is to show the watermark on every page.

  1. Select Page Range Options to select specific pages.
  1. Select Pages from, and then enter a specific page range into the boxes in the Page Range Options dialog box.

Pro Tip: If you only want the watermark to appear on one page in a multi-page PDF, put that page number in both boxes.

  1. Select All pages in range, Even pages only, or Odd pages only from the Subset menu.
  1. Select the OK button to close the Page Range Options dialog box.
  1. Select the OK button to close the Add Watermark dialog box.

Pro Tip: You can’t add more than one watermark simultaneously. However, you can repeat the steps above to add multiple layers of watermarks, including a combination of text and images.

How to Update Watermarks in PDFs with Adobe Acrobat

This process only updates the first watermark added to your PDF. Acrobat doesn’t provide a way to update additional watermarks.

  1. Select the Tools tab (see figure 1).
  2. Select Edit PDF in the Tools Center (see figure 2).
  3. Select Watermark in the Edit PDF toolbar (see figure 3).
  4. Select Update from the drop-down menu.
  1. Make all necessary edits in the Update Watermark dialog box, which offers the same options as the Add Watermark dialog box (see figure 5).
  2. Select the OK button to close the Update Watermark dialog box (see figure 19).

How to Remove Watermarks in PDFs with Adobe Acrobat

This process removes all the watermarks in your PDF. Acrobat doesn’t provide a way to remove specific watermarks.

  1. Select the Tools tab (see figure 1).
  2. Select Edit PDF in the Tools Center (see figure 2).
  3. Select Watermark in the Edit PDF toolbar (see figure 3).
  4. Select Remove from the drop-down menu.
  1. Select Yes in the dialog box asking if you are sure you want to remove your watermark.

How to Add Watermarks to Multiple PDFs in Adobe Acrobat

  1. Create your watermark by following steps 1 through 15 in the How to Insert Watermarks section, above.
  2. Select the Apply to Multiple Files button.
  1. Select the Add Files button in the Watermark (Add) dialog box, and then select Add Files or Add Open Files from the drop-down menu.
  1. If you selected Add Files, locate the files in the Add Files dialog box, and then select the Open button.

Pro Tip: PC users can press and hold the Ctrl key on their keyboards to select multiple files at once.

  1. If you selected Add Open Files, select the files from the Open PDF Files dialog box, and then select the Add Files button.

Pro Tip: PC users can press and hold the Ctrl key on their keyboard to select multiple files at once.

  1. Select the OK button in the Watermark (Add) dialog box.
  1. Ensure that Overwrite existing files is selected in the Output Options dialog box in order to place the watermarks directly on the files you selected.
  1. Select the OK button to close the Output Options dialog box.

The additional PDFs should open automatically if they are not already open. Ensure that your watermark was added correctly, and then save the PDFs as you normally would.

PowerPoint is a powerful commercial presentation tool developed by Microsoft. With it, you can make engaging tutorials, digital portfolios, photo slideshows, and more. However, there are instances where you may need to embed a fast-motion video on this utility program. So, can PowerPoint speed up a video? As straightforward as it sounds, learning how to do that can be time-consuming. Therefore, here is a detailed step-by-step guide. You’ll also learn how to change PowerPoint video playback speed using an excellent alternative on Mac or Windows PC.

Part 1: How to change PowerPoint video playback speed

Let’s start by learning how to apply motion effects to videos directly on a PowerPoint presentation. In this case, you’ll add Windows Media Player to PowerPoint and use it to play videos. This way, you can play longer and higher-quality video clips inside your presentation. Also, using WMP ensures you can play most video files and eliminates playback issues such as scratchy audio and black screen.

Below are the easy steps to change a PowerPoint video speed directly on your presentation slide:

Step 1. Launch PowerPoint and create your slides with space where you’ll embed the video.

Step 2. If you’re using PowerPoint 2016 or newer, you’ll have to activate the Developer tab on the ribbon. To do that, press File and then choose Options . Then, click Customize Ribbon and select the Developer tab. This is where Microsoft usually adds some neat little features, especially on Excel. Click Ok , and you’ll see the Developer tab at the top of the ribbon.

Step 3. Now use the Developer control to add controls for Windows Media Player on your empty slide. Select the slide, click the Developer tab, and then tap the More Controls button. It looks like two spanner tools.

Step 4. Next, scroll down the More Controls window and choose Windows Media Player . The WMP window will embed on your slide once you click Ok . You can crop it to adjust the movie playback window.

Step 5. Right-click the WMP window and choose Property Sheet . Alternatively, choose Properties from the Developer tab.

Step 6. The Properties dialog will launch with multiple options that you can change. Double-click on Custom and then click Browse on the resulting window. Select a video that you want to embed on your slide.

Step 7. Now it’s time to choose the playback rate for your video. While still on the Windows Media Player Properties window, press the Advanced tab and then change the playback speed on the Rate textbox. In this case, 1.000 is the normal speed. So, if you choose 0.500, it means you’ll reduce the playback speed by half. On the other hand, entering 2.000 on the Rate box will increase the playback speed by double.

Step 8. If you want to play the video with all the full controls such as pause, play, and volume, click the General tab and then check the Auto start, Stretch to fit , and Play full-screen boxes. Click Apply , then tap Ok to save your changes.

Step 9. Finally, close the Properties dialog before playing your PowerPoint slides. Your video will now play in slow motion or fast motion, depending on what you choose.

By default, when we inert watermark into a Word document, all pages take the same style. However, there can be times when you will try to use different watermarks, such as different on odd and even page. Let’s say, you decide to insert one kind of watermark on odd pages and another one even pages.

Our 3 methods today are aiming to help you with this issue, taking the instance of inserting alternative watermarks into odd and even pages.

Method 1: Insert Different Watermarks into Different Documents

  1. At first, double click on header area to enter editing mode.

  3. Next put cursor on odd page and insert a watermark. If you use customized watermark, you will find both odd and even pages take the same watermarks. Don’t worry. Activate header on an even page and select the watermark, then press “Delete”.

Method 2: Use a Picture as Watermark

  1. Repeat first 3 steps in method 1 first.

  3. Next activate the header on even page. Click “Picture” command under “Design” tab to insert a picture into the header.

Method 3: Insert Different Watermarks on Specific Pages

Sometimes, you may want to insert customized watermarks on several specific pages. Here we will take the example of inserting different watermarks on page 2 and 3.

  1. Firstly, insert watermarks into all pages of the document.
  2. Next put cursor at the start of page 2 and click “Page layout”.

Keep in mind that if you want the watermark on more than just a few slides, it makes more sense to use the Slide Master, because it saves you from manually copying the watermark.

Go to the INSERT tab, click Shapes, and select a rectangle. Then, draw it on the slide.

On the DRAWING TOOLS FORMAT tab, click Shape Outline and click No Outline.

Then, click Shape Fill and Picture. Browse for the picture you want and click Insert.

We are adding the picture to the fill property of the shape, instead of directly to the slide. This way, we have more options to work with, including Transparency.

By default, the picture stretches to fill the shape.

To get the right aspect ratio, go to the PICTURE TOOLS FORMAT tab, click Crop, and then, click Fit.

Drag the crop handles to crop out the empty space around the picture. Click Crop again to turn it off.

Now, we can press Shift and drag the corner handles to resize the picture without changing the aspect ratio.

And then, move the picture into place.

Next, we need to tweak the formatting to make the picture work as a watermark.

First, click Send Backward and Send to Back.

Then, click the Format Shape dialog box launcher, and the Fill & Line tab.

Add Transparency until the foreground elements are clearly visible. But, make sure it is not so transparent that the viewer won’t know what the picture is.

Watermark pictures are tricky because you have to find an image that is easily recognizable, but doesn’t fight for dominance with the foreground elements.

You’ll want to avoid images with lots of fine detail, and images like this, which will take too much effort for the viewer to figure out.

This picture of kids works because the viewer will know immediately what it is, and how it relates, but it contains a lot of detail.

So, we can use these options to reduce some details, so the image will blend in better with the background.

On the Picture tab, you can try Brightness and Contrast, and Color options, like Saturation and Recolor.

Also, try using Sharpness to remove detail.

The Effects tab has ARTISTIC EFFECTS. For this picture, let’s add the Line Drawing effect and increase the Pencil Size.

Click away from the picture to get a better idea of how everything looks without the selection border.

If you find you can’t select the picture again because it is behind other objects, go to the HOME tab, click Select and open the Selection Pane.

Now, you can select the picture by clicking it in the list.

So once you are happy with the watermark, you can Save as picture and insert in other slides, or you can simply Copy it to the Clipboard, move to another slide, and then, Paste it. Right-click the picture and Send to Back layer.

Now, let’s say, we decide to change the look of our presentation by going to the DESIGN tab and applying a theme like Ion, for example.

In this case, all we need to do is adjust the picture settings to help it blend in with the design.
