How to use your apple watch as a flashlight

While the Apple Watch doesn’t feature a camera, and by extension a flashlight, Apple does offer users a way to get a super bright light through software techniques.

Follow along as we guide you through how to turn on and customize the flashlight on your Apple Watch.

How to turn on and customize the flashlight

  1. On your Watch face, swipe up for Control Center.
  2. Tap on the flashlight icon.
  3. By default, you’ll have the standard bright white light. From here you can choose from the standard white, a flashing white, or a red light. Note that the flashlight will only shine bright when Apple Watch is facing away from you. When it’s facing your person, it will only shine at the default brightness your Apple Watch is set to.

There you have it! Now you can turn on and choose different lighting options depending on your situation. To turn off the flashlight, simply swipe down on the screen.

With Apple Watch Series 2 or later, the light will be noticeably brighter due to its 1,000 nit display, versus the 500 nit display found in older generations of Apple Watch.

Your iPhone have a flashlight function, but why pull it out of your pocket if you don’t have to? Your Apple Watch can do something very similar. Here’s how to use it when you need to stumble your way through a dark room.

Unfortunately, the Apple Watch doesn’t have a LED flash like the iPhone does, so instead it relies on the small screen to provide enough light to see your way through a pitch-black room or hallway. It’s not quite as bright, but it at least prevents you from having to fish your iPhone out of your pocket every time.

To get started, wake up your Apple Watch by tapping on the screen or raising your wrist. When the screen turns on, swipe up from the bottom to bring up Control Center. Then tap on the flashlight button.

How to use your apple watch as a flashlight

The screen will turn completely white. It will appear dim at first, but tapping on it will enable full brightness and give you more light to see in the dark.

How to use your apple watch as a flashlight

There are three different “flashlights” that you can choose from: white, flashing white, and red. The red is great for when you need to see in the dark, but don’t want your eyes to fully adjust to brighter light. And the flashing white can be used as a beacon of sorts by getting someone’s attention. Or if you’re out running at night, you can alert drivers so they see you. All you have to do is swipe left or right to choose one.

How to use your apple watch as a flashlight

To turn off the Apple Watch’s flashlight mode, just swipe down from the top of the screen.

That’s all there is to it! Again, if you only need a little bit of light to guide your way, the Apple Watch is the way to go. However, it can’t beat the iPhone’s LED flash. So if you need the most light possible, your iPhone is still the best option for that.

Among other featured enhancements and improvements, the watchOS 4 software has brought the useful flashlight function for the very first time to Apple Watch.

With a hands-free flashlight on their wrist, Apple Watch wearers can easily illuminate a keyhole as they’re trying to unlock the door, light up other objects in the dark, make people on the road aware of their presence, read at night while preserving their night vision and more.

If you don’t have watchOS 4 or later, you won’t be able to use this handy feature.

To update your Apple Watch software to the latest version, tap My Watch → General → Software Update in the Watch app on your paired iPhone and follow the instructions.

Three Apple Watch flashlight modes

The flashlight lights up the face of your Apple Watch with maximum brightness.

It has three basic modes, some of which were designed as a safety feature during night workouts or when assisting others in an emergency situation.

  • White light—This is your standard all-white flashlight for those times when you need to light a darkened door lock or illuminate objects in the dark.
  • Flashing white light—This mode is a safety feature for when you’re out for an evening run or bicycle ride, but it shouldn’t be viewed as a substitute for proper ANSI Class 3 outerwear with a real running light, like IKEA’s reflective vests.
  • Steady red light—Useful for night reading, when assisting someone in an emergency situation, getting people’s attention by waving the red light around at night or simply lighting nearby objects while preserving your night vision.

The red light helps light objects in the dark while preserving your night vision

Here’s how to turn your Apple Watch into a flashlight.

How to use the flashlight on Apple Watch

You can turn the flashlight on or off, dismiss it with a simple gesture or cycle through the three built-in modes outlined in the previous section, and here’s how.

Turning the flashlight on

To access the Apple Watch flashlight, do the following:

1) On your watch face, swipe up from the bottom edge of the display.

2) Once in Control Center, tap the flashlight icon.

The OLED display on your watch will light up at maximum brightness as soon as the clock at the top of display disappears. You cannot adjust the flashlight intensity like on iPhone.

The best thing about the Apple Watch flashlight: It stays dim until you turn your wrist away from you so you don’t blind yourself.

“I freaking love this! I use it almost every night when looking for my dogs poop in the dark,” our former video guy Andrew O’Hara told me in a call.

Turning the flashlight off

To turn off the active flashlight, swipe down from the top edge of the display.

Alternatively, press the Digital Crown or the Side button.

Switching between flashlight modes

To change your Apple Watch flashlight mode, swipe left once to advance from the steady white light to the flashing white light or twice to get to the steady red light. Swipe right to cycle through modes.

The flashing white light alerts others when you’re out for an evening run

Now you know how to make the most out of the flashlight feature on your Apple Watch.

How to use your apple watch as a flashlight

One of the best Apple Watch features I use most frequently is the ping button to locate my iPhone. I often forget where I put my iPhone down, but with my Apple Watch always strapped to my wrist, I can it track down through a loud ring.

But recently I learned there’s another way to find your iPhone with your Apple Watch, and it’s particularly helpful at nighttime or in dark spaces. Not only can the Apple Watch ping a paired iPhone, but it can cause the iPhone’s flashlight to blink too.

The first time I figured out this hidden Apple Watch feature was by accident. I distractedly held down the ping button on my Apple Watch while searching for my iPhone. The phone was face down on my couch, and in addition to the familiar ringing sound I saw a flashing light in the otherwise dark living room.

There are many reasons why the Apple Watch is the best smartwatch on the market — if you ask me, how easy it makes it to find my iPhone is a major selling point. Now that I know how the flashlight trigger works, I’ve been using it frequently, and even showed it off on the Tom’s Guide TikTok account (p.s. follow us if you don’t already.)

Check out the video on how this Apple Watch feature works:

It might not be the most sophisticated Apple Watch feature, especially when you consider all of what watchOS 8 and the best Apple Watch apps offer, but it’s also not obvious. If you find yourself misplacing your phone multiple times per day like I do, the flashlight might come in handy. Whether your iPhone fell beneath your car seat, ended up in your laundry bin or is lost in another dark space, a blinking light can reunite you with your device.

Here’s how to try out this hidden Apple Watch feature now.

How to blink your iPhone’s flashlight with your Apple Watch

1. Swipe up on your Apple Watch’s home screen to open the control center.

2. Look for the ping iPhone button. It’s an icon of an iPhone with curved lines on both sides.

3. Press and hold the ping iPhone button to ring your iPhone’s alarm and trigger your iPhone’s flashlight. Continue until you’ve found your iPhone.

The flashlight on the iPhone is a life saver. Whether it’s looking for your seats in a dark theater (remember to put your Apple Watch in Theater mode!) or trying to find your way in your house when the lights are out. In watchOS 4, the Apple Watch also gets a flashlight feature.

As this is a watch, the implementation is a little different. It’s more like iPhone’s Selfie Flash feature. Because the Apple Watch doesn’t have an LED Flash, the software uses Apple Watch’s screen as a flashlight instead. Yes, it’s a bit weird, but in practice, I’ve found it to be really useful. Especially when I’m trying to find my way to the bathroom in the middle of the night. My Apple Watch is right there so I don’t need to go looking for my iPhone. Here’s how it works.

How to Use Flashlight on Apple Watch

Just like the iPhone, the Flashlight feature on the Apple Watch is in the Control Center. Even the icon is similar.

Step 1: On your Apple Watch, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open Control Center. How to use your apple watch as a flashlight

Step 2: From the Control Center, tap on the Flashlight icon (it looks like a traditional flashlight).

Step 3: You’ll now see a new page take over your Apple Watch. In a second, the entire Apple Watch’s screen will turn white and bright. This is your flashlight. And it gets better. As you turn your wrist away from you, the screen gets even brighter! This is a really thoughtful feature. How to use your apple watch as a flashlight

Step 4: There are two more variations of the flashlight. Swipe left on the screen and you’ll enable an actually flashing (pulsating) flashlight that switches between the bright white and gray color. This can be really useful when you’re out running or cycling at night. This can be a good way to make sure others on the screen can see you.

Step 5: Swipe once more and you’ll get to a muted red version. If it’s the middle of the night and you think the bright white color is a bit too much, switch to the red color and it will be much better for your eyes. How to use your apple watch as a flashlight

Step 6: To stop using the flashlight, all you have to do is press once on the Digital Crown and you’ll be back to the watch face.

We want to help you master Control Center, one of the most powerful and underutilized features on Apple devices. Cult of Mac’s Control Center Pro Tips series will show you how to make the most of this useful toolbox on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Mac.

Searching for something in a dark room? You can turn your iPhone, iPad and even your Apple Watch into a flashlight with just one tap inside Control Center. We’ll show you how.

The LED flash on the back of your Apple device can do more than just light up your photos. It also doubles as a rather effective flashlight when you’re trying to see in the dark. And activating it couldn’t be easier.

Enable your flashlight inside Control Center

Apple includes the flashlight button inside Control Center by default, so to activate it, you just need to follow these steps on iPhone and iPad:

  1. Open Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner of your screen (or up from the bottom on iPhone models with Touch ID).
  2. Tap the flashlight button to turn on your device’s LED flash. Tap it again to turn it off.

Alternatively, tap and hold the flashlight button at step two to reveal a slider that allows you to adjust the flashlight’s brightness. You can also enable the flashlight from the lock screen on iPhone, and that is the easiest option when your device is locked. However, when it’s unlocked, this method is simpler.

Note that there is no flashlight feature on iPad models without an LED flash.

Enable your flashlight on Apple Watch

You also can turn your Apple Watch into a surprisingly effective flashlight. Follow these steps on Apple Watch:

  1. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen while on your watch face to open Control Center.
  2. Tap the flashlight button.

Apple Watch doesn’t have an LED flash, of course, so instead its display turns white and lights up as bright as possible. It’s not as effective as the LED flash on iPhone and iPad, but it’s certainly useful in a pinch.

You have a couple more options on Apple Watch, too. When the flashlight is enabled, swiping left will activate a strobe effect, and swiping left again will turn the light red.

How to use your apple watch as a flashlight

One of the reasons why the Apple Watch has the red flashlight: not detectable by most insects, making it more convenient.

Traditionally, the flashlights in our smartphones use the white LED flash placed beside the rear camera, which is enough to help a user easily navigate through the dark. However, if you have noticed, Apple Watch has a red flashlight too, and there are good scientific reasons behind it. According to the YouTube channel Apple Explained, one of the thoughts behind Apple’s design decision depends upon how our eyes function in the daylight and the darkness of the night. In dark, our eyes transition to night vision using a process called “dark adaptation”by activating photopigments like Rhodopsin to increase sensitivity to dim light. When we come across bright white lights, our vision transitions from night vision to daylight vision, reducing the sensitivity by decomposing Rhodopsin. If we see a sudden bright white light when our night vision is activated, our eyes might hurt for a little time before they transition to daylight. This transition during the night also disrupts your sleep.

A red flashlight, however, is better than a bright flashlight as it is much less disruptive for the user and the people around them. For example, while watching a movie in a cinema hall, a person with a bright white flashlight can distract the viewers around them, whereas a red flashlight would be relatively less distracting. For similar reasons, a red flashlight can be quite helpful to people who work in dark settings, such as a photographer working in a dark room or an astronomer working with a telescope. Red lights are also not detectable by most insects, making it a more convenient option for people who are on adventures spending nights in forests.

Interestingly, when Apple launched its smartwatch in 2015, it was promoted as a fashionable accessory. However, soon the wearable device was branded displaying its health benefits. The smartwatch has health monitoring features such as tracking blood oxygen level and heart rate, among others. The latest Apple Watch 6 costs from about Rs 41,000 to Rs 74,000.

Your iPhone has a flashlight that you can use by swiping up from the bottom of your screen and tapping a button. The iPhone’s flashlight is then enabled by turning on the camera flash on the back of the device.

Your Apple Watch has a flashlight, too, even though it doesn’t have a camera or a camera flash. Instead the Apple Watch flashlight makes your screen a bright white color, or even a flashing white light or red light. If you often turn on your watch face for a bright light source in a dark environment, then find out how to use the watch’s dedicated flashlight option for some additional light.

How to Turn on the Apple Watch Flashlight

The steps in this article were performed on an Apple Watch 2, in the WatchOS 4.2.3. operating system. This option was not available in some earlier versions of WatchOS, so you may need to update if you don’t see this button on your watch. Note that this is not related to the flashlight on your iPhone.

The same menu in the steps below has a water icon, too. Find out what it does.

Step 1: Swipe up from the bottom of the screen on your Apple Watch.

Step 2: Tap the flashlight icon.

Step 3: Swipe to the left to view the other flashlight modes on the watch. The default mode is a bright white screen, the second mode is a flashing white screen, and the last mode is a bright red screen. Once you are done using the watch’s flashlight, simply swipe down from the top of the screen to close it.

If your iPhone has been updated to iOS 11, then you have the ability to remove the flashlight, if you would like to do so. Find out how to get rid of the flashlight on the iPhone’s Control Center if you find that you turn it on accidentally more often than you actually use it.

If you’ve ever used a flashlight on an Apple Watch, then one hundred percent were greeted by a mode with a red glow. Apple has never talked about its presence or explained why it is needed.

The red flashlight turns on in much the same way as a regular flashlight: swipe up on the dial from the bottom edge, select the flashlight icon, and then double-scroll to the left.

In fact, this is a very useful smartwatch feature that you will use after reading the material.

Regular white light is not universal

How to use your apple watch as a flashlight

The Apple Watch flashlight comes out pretty simple, but in some situations it helps a lot. It’s just that in the dark, a bright white light can interfere with others. For example, at home, if you do not live alone, or in a theater.

In addition, light spots can remain in the eyes from the bright glow. To avoid these inconveniences, Apple added to Apple Watch Red Lantern.

The red glow has unique qualities that make it useful in some situations.

1. In the cinema or theater

How to use your apple watch as a flashlight
Previously, I did not understand why the red flashlight turns on in this mode.

Our eyes are less sensitive to red light. So Apple made this flashlight setting the default when you have theater mode turned on.

If you suddenly need to highlight a place around, you will not interfere with the rest.

2. When reading in the dark

How to use your apple watch as a flashlight
But more often I use a flashlight in Apple Watch to plug my iPhone into an outlet next to my bed.

In case you need to read something at night, you can highlight a document or book with a red flashlight. This will prevent the person next to you from waking up and disrupting your sleep cycle.

It will be inconvenient to highlight text using Apple Watch for a long time, but it will be enough for a couple of minutes.

3. At home

How to use your apple watch as a flashlight
You will use this.

Every time I get up at night to walk to the bathroom, I always use the red flashlight in my smartwatch. Due to the fact that the eyes do not strain at all, it became much easier to fall asleep afterwards.

Check it out for yourself and see what I say.

4. If you are doing astronomical observations

How to use your apple watch as a flashlight
Take note.

Perhaps the most “exotic” scenario. When I first started doing mobile astro photography (I even devoted a whole post to my hobby), I unknowingly used my iPhone as a flashlight ..

Then the eyes had to get used to the darkness for a long time in order to comfortably navigate the starry sky.

When my friend told me about this Apple Watch feature, the problem disappeared. Now I always wear a smart watch for such “outings”.

5. In nature

How to use your apple watch as a flashlight
Red light attracts little attention from insects.

Not obvious life, but if you are somewhere outside the city in nature and you need to illuminate in the dark, for example, a backpack, then the red light will not attract the attention of insects and other living creatures.

I have already been convinced of this on my own experience.

*We just want readers to access information more quickly and easily with other multilingual content, instead of information only available in a certain language.

Do you want to take a group photo, but is there no one to take the photo for you? You could always use the self timer on your iPhone, but that isn’t always handy. Either you’re all awkwardly smiling at the camera while the timer counts down, or you’re slightly too late, which does produce some hilarious images. If you open the camera app on your Apple Watch, it activates your iPhone camera straight away. Tap the shutter button on your Apple Watch to take a photo remotely. Useful, right?

2. Use the flashlight

Looking for something in the dark? That’s difficult without a light. We all know the flashlight mode on our iPhone, but did you know the Apple Watch also has this mode? Swipe up in the Control Center and tap the flashlight. You can now use the screen of your Apple Watch as a flashlight. You can adjust the brightness and switch between 3 modes, namely regular white, flashing white, and red.

3. Find your iPhone

With the Apple Watch on your wrist, you’re always up to date on incoming messages. That’s why my own iPhone is always set to silent mode. But that isn’t very useful when I loose my iPhone. The Apple Watch helps you to find your iPhone. Swipe up for the Control Center and tap on the iPhone to make it ping. Your iPhone will now emit a short sound that’s still long enough to find it. In addition, the iPhone will also blink briefly, which is ideal in the dark.

4. Unlock your Mac with your Apple Watch

The advantage of having multiple Apple products is that they all work together very well. For example, you can unlock your Mac with your Apple Watch. The MacBook ‘senses’ that you’re near thanks to your Apple Watch. You won’t have to enter a password, but you can simply open your Mac and get started. You do have to log in on both devices with your Apple ID. Go to System Preferences on your Mac > Security & Privacy > General. Here, you can set up the Apple Watch so that it unlocks your Mac.

5. Set a timer

Do you need a timer? You can set one on the Apple Watch. This is ideal if you want to cook rice for 10 minutes or if you want to plank for 1 minute in the gym. Go to the timer on your Apple Watch and select a time. To make it even easier, you can also ask Siri to do it for you. This comes in handy if your hands are dirty while you’re cooking. Just say: "Hi Siri, set the timer for 1 minute".

6. Use the Theater Mode

Sometimes you don’t want your Apple Watch to keep lighting up. For example, when you’re trying to focus or when you’re watching a movie in the movie theater. In those moments, you can put your Apple Watch in Theater Mode. Swipe up for the Control Center and tap the icon with the masks. This is Theater Mode. Activate this mode. The screen of your Apple Watch will now remain dark until you tap the screen or touch the side button or Digital Crown.

It’s just the light on the back of your iPhone, yet that flashlight is remarkably flexible — and there are so many ways to turn it on or off quickly.

Apple first added an LED light to the back of its iPhone 4 in 2010. Before then, you could get apps that turned your iPhone screen bright white. And after then you could apps that made the LED stay on instead of just flashing as you took photos.

It wasn’t until iOS 7 in 2013 that Apple built flashlight controls into the system. But since then, you’ve had a fully-functioning and surprisingly versatile flashlight right there in your iPhone.

The flashlight is versatile enough that you’ve probably switched it on from the lock screen by accident. But it’s also hidden enough that you may not have seen how to alter it, or how it can fit in with both Shortcuts and accessibility options.

How to turn on the flashlight on the iPhone

Tap on the lock screen to wake your iPhone, and then at bottom left there is a flashlight button. Tap and release it to turn on the flashlight.

It’s a tap and release movement: the flashlight doesn’t switch on until you’ve released the button. And when you do, you also get a haptic confirmation that you’ve turned it on.

You switch it off the same way, assuming you’re still on the lock screen. If you hold the iPhone too long, you’re likely to unlock it with Face ID and lose this option.

In that case, you need to use Control Center for either turning the flashlight on or off. You can do this from the lock screen too, and there are benefits to it.

How to use your apple watch as a flashlight

But chiefly what Control Center does is give you the ability to turn the light on almost as quickly as you can from the lock screen. Swipe down on your screen from top right and tap on the flashlight icon to turn it on or off.

If the light is off, that icon is a black button with a white flashlight on it. If the light is on, it’s a white button with a blue flashlight icon.

There is one more direct option for using the flashlight. You can say “Hey, Siri, turn the flashlight on,” and it will do exactly that. Or off, if you ask.

What more you can do with the flashlight controls on the iPhone

The lock screen has no controls for the flashlight beyond on and off. However, if you use Control Center, you can press and hold on the icon to get a finer control.

Specifically, if you press and hold then you get the option to adjust the brightness of the light. There are five settings, from nothing to the brightest, and you set the one you want by swiping up and down.

Note that whatever you set the flashlight to with this control, that’s what you will get each time you use it until you positively choose to change it again. That includes whether you turn the flashlight on from Control Center, or the lock screen.

Extra options for turning on the flashlight

The lock center icon is quick, and the Control Center one doesn’t lag far behind. There is a quicker way to have the flashlight turn on, though, and that’s via a Back Tap.

If you have an iPhone 8 or later, and it is running iOS 14, then you can set it so that tapping two or three times on the back of the phone will immediately turn the flashlight on.

You need to create a Shortcut to do it first, then tell the phone you want to run that when you tap.

How to set up a Shortcut to turn on the iPhone flashlight

  1. Open Shortcuts and tap the + sign to create a new one
  2. Tap Add Action
  3. Enter “flashlight” into the search box
  4. When it appears, tap on Set flashlight
  5. This defaults to turning the light on, so you’re done, save the Shortcut
  6. Optionally, repeat the same steps but choose Turn flashlight Off before you save

There’s nothing to stop you using these Shortcuts directly. You won’t find a benefit to opening Shortcuts, finding the one to turn it on, and then running it.

However, you can have Siri launch any Shortcut you choose. And the step for turning on or off the flashlight can be just one of many in a Shortcut.

That can include having a single Shortcut that asks you if you want to turn the light on or off. It’s up to you whether you do that and have to specify each time, or whether you have one Shortcut for one, and another for off.

How to setup Back Tap to turn the iPhone flashlight on

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Scroll to Accessibility and tap
  3. Tap Touch
  4. Tap on Back Tap
  5. Choose either Double Tap or Triple Tap
  6. Wait while iOS retrieves a list of all your Shortcuts
  7. When you can see it, tap on your On Shortcut

You could set a double-tap to run the Shortcut that turns the flashlight on, and the triple-tap to run the one that switches it off. Or vice versa. It’s a shame that the Back Tap can’t be a toggle, or that Apple doesn’t include the flashlight in the system options you can access directly with it.

How to turn the flashlight off

Everything so far has been about turning the flashlight on or off. There is one option that is just for turning it off, though.

When you’re at the lock screen and the flashlight is on, swipe from right to left on your iPhone screen to bring up the camera. The moment you do that, the flashlight switches off.

It would, too. As it’s the camera that the light was first created for.

Over the years since iOS 7, that one little light for adding a flash when you take a photo has become a remarkably useful flashlight too.

Tap Flashlight to activate the flashlight feature. Tap the display while the flashlight is on to change the light from grayish to bright white. Swipe right to left to access a blinking light or red light.

Tap Airplane Mode to switch off your cellular connection and shut down Wi-Fi.

Tap Theater Mode to send your Apple Watch into silent mode, keeping the screen dark until you tap the display.

While you can't send video using AirPlay on your Apple Watch, you can control where your music goes.

Tap Edit to rearrange the Control Panel shortcuts to access frequently used buttons more easily. To move a button, tap Edit, and then hold your finger on the button until it's highlighted. Drag the button to its new location with your finger. Tap Done when you're finished.

Can I adjust the brightness of the flashlight on my Apple Watch?

Apple Watch automatically adjusts screen brightness using the built-in ambient sensor. A simple rule applies: the darker around you, the brighter the backlight will be, and vice versa.

How to turn off the flashlight on Apple Watch

To exit Flashlight mode, simply press the Digital Crown or place your palm on the screen.

It’s easier than ever to toggle your iPhone’s flashlight (or torch) on and off. From your lock screen, home screen, or from within any app, most iPhone models will let you enable or disable the flashlight from the Control Center, via the Notification Center, or with Siri. But there’s an even faster and more convenient way to trigger the flashlight button, and you don’t even have to look at your iPhone to use it.

While all iPhone models with Face ID have an easy-access flashlight button in the bottom left of the lock screen, you have to press down hard enough to shine the light, and right-handers with small hands may not be able to reach easily with one hand. On models with the Home button and Touch ID, that shortcut doesn’t even exist on the lock screen. So if you’re frustrated by the sensitive flashlight button on the lock screen or lack thereof, try using Shortcuts and “Back Tap.”

By creating a simple shortcut and using the Back Tap accessibility feature on your iPhone, you can toggle your flashlight on and off by simply tapping the back of your iPhone. And since you’re tapping the back of your iPhone to trigger the flashlight, you don’t even have to look at the screen for it to work.

  • Shortcuts: Although the Shortcuts app is on your iPhone by default, you may have deleted it. You can re-install it for free from the App Store.
  • iPhone 8 or newer: You must have a Back Tap-compatible iPhone, which means the iPhone 8/8 Plus and everything made after those.
  • iOS 14: Back Tap is a feature available in iOS 14 and later only.

Step 1: Create a Shortcut to Toggle the Flashlight

To start, you’ll need to create a shortcut that turns your flashlight on and off. The process is straightforward and takes less than a minute.

First, launch the Shortcuts app and tap on the “My Shortcuts” tab. Next, tap on the plus (+) sign in the top right to start your new shortcut. In the new shortcut, tap on “Add Action” or the search bar at the bottom.

A menu will appear where you can search for actions to add. Instead of browsing through, type in “flashlight” into the search bar select the “Set Flashlight” action when it appears; it should have a white-and-blue flashlight icon. You’ll need to modify the action, so tap on the blue “Turn” option and choose “Toggle” in the menu that appears.

The action should now say “Toggle flashlight.” Hit “Next” in the top right and give the shortcut a name. Any name is fine, but to make it easy, you can call it “Toggle Flashlight.” Hit “Done,” and your new shortcut should appear in your library.

Step 2: Add the Shortcut to Back Tap

Now that your shortcut is finished, it’s time to add it to a Back Tap gesture. Open the Settings app and go to Accessibility –> Touch –> Back Tap.

Choose either “Double Tap” or “Triple Tap,” depending on how you want to enable and disable the flashlight. Either option is fine; it’s just about preference and whether or not one option is already being used to run another shortcut or action. Choose an option, scroll through the list, and tap on the flashlight shortcut you just created. You’re now finished with this step.

Step 3: Toggle Your Flashlight On & Off

The only thing left to do is run the shortcut and turn your flashlight on and off. Simply tap two or three times on the back of your iPhone, depending on which option you chose. Your flashlight should turn on or off, and you should see a notification appear at the top of your screen, indicating that the shortcut has finished. If you don’t want the notification to appear, check out our guide for disabling Shortcut notifications.

If you don’t want to tap, you can turn off the flashlight in another way. If you’re on the lock screen, you can easily swipe left on the screen with one hand to partially open Camera. Even if you swipe just a tiny bit, where the viewfinder is barely visible, the flashlight on your iPhone should turn off.

Apple Watch wearers may occasionally notice green lights on the back of their smartwatch. Here’s what they mean and how to turn them off when wanted.

Apple Watch wearers might occasionally notice green lights on the back of the wearable. While this is totally normal, it can be worth knowing why they are there, what they do, and how to turn them off. Apple Watch continues to be the best smartwatch for iPhone owners, but getting used to all of the features can take some time. The use of the green light is one such example. The back of the Apple Watch regularly lights up with bright green lights, and if you aren’t sure what they are, they can be rather alarming.

The Apple Watch is capable of countless things. The interface is usually simple and easy to navigate, but there can be occasions when things seem less clear. For example, in addition to a green light, Apple Watch wearers may also see a red light on the watch face. Without context, many might assume the red light to be a warning of an issue. In reality, it’s simply a way for the Apple Watch to advise the wearer that there’s a new notification.

In contrast, the green light on an Apple Watch may seem a little more ominous, especially considering it’s on the rear of the device and likely to go unnoticed by the wearer most of the time. In fact, the green lights can sometimes turn on even when the watch is not being worn, adding to their mysterious nature. Despite all that, the lights are simply used to measure people’s heart rate. Essentially, an Apple Watch uses these green LED lights to detect the amount of blood flow and then uses that to help determine the actual heart rate. At times when the watch is taking more frequent heart rate measurements, the green LED lights will be even more active.

How To Turn Off Apple Watch’s Green Lights

There’s no real reason to turn off the green lights as they are used to measure heart rate. However, there can be times when the watch is inadvertently taking measurements. For example, if the watch is not being worn but the green lights are on, then it could be a result of a workout still in progress. During these times, the Apple Watch will be looking to monitor the heart rate more frequency and causing the lights to activate more often. Simply stopping the workout will also stop the green lights from activating.

In cases where users want to totally disable the green lights, then the only option is to completely turn off the heart rate sensor. To do this, simply open the Apple Watch’s Settings app and then navigate to ‘Privacy,’ followed by ‘Health.’ Here the user will find the option to tap on ‘Heart Rate’ and the ability to disable the feature. Again, this will completely stop the Apple Watch from being able to take measurements, requiring the user to enable the feature (and the green lights) if they want to measure their heart rate again.
