Did you know that it is possible to see your upcoming appointments and events from the taskbar in Windows 10? You don’t need to open any apps and one click shows your agenda.

This is a nice feature of Windows 10 and it enables you to access the Calendar app from the time/date in the taskbar. Even if you don’t use Microsoft Calendar, you can still see events on whatever other calendar you use by adding it to the app.

For example, you can add Google Calendar and see events that have been added to it on the taskbar. Microsoft Calendar syncs with Google Calendar and others.

Show the calendar

The clock at the right side of the taskbar is the key and it does more than you might think. For example, have you tried clicking it? It displays a pop-up panel that contains a calendar for the current month.

Use the up and down arrows near the top right to jump from month to month. You can easily see what day of the week the new year starts on, or the day of your holiday or birthday later in the year.

The date at the top under the time is clickable and it instantly returns you to today.

Notice that there is a Today section and below it says No events. Click the plus button on the right to add events to your calendar.

Create a calendar event

A window opens and you can enter a name for the event and choose which calendar to add it to. The default is Outlook calendar, but if you have added Google Calendar (I show how to add it below), then it appears as Gmail. It is up to you whether you use Microsoft, Google or some other calendar and the app is flexible.

Click the calendar icon to choose the day of the event and the time is just to the right. It can be for a specific length of time, such as an hour or an all day event. An icon can even be for the event, but they are quite limited and it is a shame you can’t choose emoji.

View your agenda

After adding a few events to the calendar, click the clock at the right side of the taskbar and now in the bottom half are the items you added.

It only shows the agenda for the day selected. Today is the 11th so it is highlighted in solid blue in the screenshot above and I clicked 18 to see my agenda for that day.

Add Google Calendar to Microsoft Calendar

The appointments added above were stored in Google Calendar and if you are wondering how to show events from other calendars in the clock pop-up panel, here is how to add them.

Open the Calendar app from the Start menu and in the left panel, click the gear icon to open Settings.

In the Settings panel on the right, click Manage Accounts in the list of items and then click Add Account.

These are the easy options, below them is an option to manually configure a calendar account. We want to add Google Calendar, so click it in the list.

You then need to sign in to your Google account using your Gmail email address and password. If you have two-factor authentication set up, you will be asked for the code that is sent via text message to your phone.

The Google account, or whichever account you added, appears in the left panel in the calendar app. If that calendar contains multiple calendars, then these appear as checkboxes and you can choose the ones that are to be visible.

That’s it, now when you create a calendar event, there is a choice of calendars to add it to.

I’ve done this, but the only events that show up in the taskbar agenda are from the Microsoft Account. Events from all my calendars show up in the Calendar app, but not in the taskbar agenda.

Had the same issue. I deleted my google account from the calendar, and then connected it again. Now it shows all the events when I access it from task bar.

Sam and Bjarke, if you open Microsoft Calendar, can you see Google Calendar events? You have to add Google Calendar and then authorise access by Microsoft Calendar. This is working fine on my PC and if I add an event to Google calendar I see it in MS Calendar and in the Agenda.

It works for me, but is there a way to have the days that have some activity display in different colors so I know I have something that day?

SAme disappointment as Bob…. I have to click each day to see if there is an event. Seems like Nicrosoft could Box ALL days that have a linked event.
Really troublesome to have to open another app (CALENDAR) to see the events that are already on the Time Date calendar, just can’t see them.

Same disappointment. Did even anybody check the user friendliness of this app/feature? Why would you not display days with events with a different color? Having to click through the days is just… I hope the person who approved this into production is allowed to use only this calendar forever.

So my calendar was working ‘ok’ (same disapointment as mentioned, only shows that days events) but after playing with the main calendar I believe somehow my main is switched to google calender and the taskbar no longer shows ANY events.. VERY frustrating

The integration between the Calendar app and the clock from the taskbar is a significant productivity improvement. Instead of waiting for notifications from the Action Center, or having to launch the Calendar app to know what’s on your daily schedule, you can use the clock from the taskbar to get a short glimpse of your day’s planned activities. To access your Agenda directly from the taskbar, all you have to do is click or tap on the clock, located on the right side of the taskbar. Right under the time and date sections, you can find a section titled Today that lists all the events you have scheduled for… today. 🙂

You can scroll through the list if your schedule is packed. To check the details of any event scheduled for today, click or tap on it. Windows 10 launches the Calendar app and takes you to that event’s details page.

You can use this page to edit your event as you see fit. Save it when you are done, and you are taken to an overview of your month in the Calendar app.

NOTE: The first couple of times we tried to access an event by clicking or tapping on it in the Agenda, Windows 10 took us to the calendar for the current month from the Calendar app instead. If this happens, click or tap on your event again to open the details page.

When it opens, your Agenda shows the activities scheduled for today. However, you can also use it to get a glimpse of your planned events and reminders for any other day. Click or tap on another day in your calendar to see the activities from that day’s schedule displayed underneath.

As seen above, if you added a location for your activity, that detail also gets displayed with the entry.

The Agenda from Windows 10’s taskbar can also be used to add new events and reminders.

To start doing that, select from the calendar the day when you want to add an event, unless the event is for today, which is selected by default. Then, click or tap the “Add an event or reminder” field, displayed under the current day, on top of your schedule.

As soon as you start typing something in, several fields appear underneath, allowing you to fill in the basic details of your event.

You can just type the location in the “Add a location” field, while clicking or tapping on the fields for the start and end times for your event opens a new window, letting you select the preferred interval.

This feature can be used to “pencil” in events and fill in later any other details you might require. However, you can also click or tap on More details to open the event’s details page and add more information now.

We found that most of our events don’t require extensive details, and the four fields from the Agenda are more than enough to plan our schedule. If you feel the same way, click or tap on Save, and your event is instantly displayed among the day’s activities.

How to hide the Agenda from Windows 10’s taskbar

If you don’t use Windows 10’s Calendar app, or if you don’t want to see the Agenda pop-up whenever you press on the taskbar’s clock, you can also hide this feature from view. Click or tap on the Hide agenda button from the lower right corner.

If, at a later time, you want to see your activities again, click or tap on the clock and then press on the Show agenda button.

Although after installing the Windows 10 November 2019 Update, you won’t see significant visual changes or new features, because this is a minor update to enhance the work available with the May 2019 Update, you’ll still find smaller improvements to existing features.

For instance, with the eighth semi-annual update, you’ll now find a new option embedded in the taskbar that will give faster access to create events and reminders without even having to open the Calendar app.

Step 1 – Go to the lower right corner of your taskbar and locate the time and date button. Click to open.
Step 2 – Choose the date of the new event you want to schedule in your calendar.
Step 3 – Next, click the Show Agenda option at the bottom right. It will show more option to customize your event schedule.
Step 4 – Look for the Today section and type the name of the event or the reminder message you want in the text box.
Step 5 – On the right, click on the drop-down menu to select your date and time. You may also choose which calendar to add the event to if in case you have more than one managed calendars.

Windows 11 is in the last phase of testing and the final build of the operating system could be signed off as soon as early September. Reports have suggested that Windows 11 will be released in the production channel in late October and users in the Release Preview Ring should be able to test the update in September.

Microsoft still has the time to introduce new changes including support for Android apps and new features for the taskbar. But as it turns out, the downgraded taskbar is a deliberate design choice by Microsoft and it looks like the company won’t make any big changes for now.

As we reported recently, Windows 11 taskbar doesn’t come with a full-fledged right-click (context) menu and it is no longer possible to drag a file or app to the taskbar. At that time, we also discovered that the modern taskbar does not allow users to ungroup items/apps.

In addition to these limitations, it looks like Microsoft has also removed features from the taskbar calendar flyout.

On Windows 10, you can click on the clock icon on the right side of your taskbar to access the calendar flyout. This panel is integrated with Windows 10’s built-in Calendar app and it lets you add events to the calendar which is synced across your devices connected to the same Microsoft/Outlook/Exchange accounts.

With Windows 11, Microsoft has removed events integration from the calendar flyout and it is no longer possible to view your agendas.

Initially, users assumed that it was a bug and it would be fixed ahead of the rumoured October 2021 release. But as it turns out, this isn’t a bug at all, according to a statement from Microsoft.

This is a deliberate design change to promote the Windows Widgets panel where you can view events and others activities.

“Thank you so much for giving us your feedback. While we’ll continue to use your feedback to guide the future of features like this, currently on Windows 11, there is a calendar option in the new widgets experience that you can use to quickly see your personal calendar and its events,” the company said in a Feedback Hub post upvoted by more than 1,000 users.

Unsurprisingly, users are not happy with these limitations and they want a proper taskbar back.

“Widget does not have all your calendars and is full of news and unnecessary stuff. Please make it available as before, as it was PERFECT, and you had the option to create events for whatever accounts you have linked at the spot,” one user noted in the Feedback Hub.

“The calendar widget only shows my Microsoft account calendar. I use other calendars as well and I need to see them all together. The web widgets are not that useful and I prefer to see all my events on the calendar flyout,” another user wrote

Starting with Windows 11, you can no view time in seconds when you click on the clock icon on the right side of the taskbar.

“You can add up to two clocks to the flyout if you’d like. The option is under Settings > Time & Language > Date & Time > Additional Clocks. Please note, at this time showing the seconds in the flyout is not supported, however your interest in this has been shared with the team for future consideration,” Microsoft said.

Similarly, it is no longer possible to edit the registry to make the clock in the taskbar directly display seconds. This registry hack, which was introduced with Windows 10, has been disabled in Windows 11 builds.

“Thanks for taking the time to share feedback about this,” the company added. We’re sorry, this is not a supported registry key for Windows 11.”

Microsoft hasn’t revealed when it plans to enable support for these missing features in the operating system.

the time at the top was always helpful for me because it was always down to the second. nowadays, win11 doesn’t have any built in place to see the full time—not even in the clock app itself.

You actually could make clock with seconds on taskbar too. But of course, they removed that feature from Windows 11. For no apparent reason.

Problem is. this widget is the very same app that was in there. But for no reason. NO SINGLE REASON they hid it in useless widget section, that I turned off. I want my calendar back where it belongs.

You need to start thinking like Panos Panay. Windows 11 is designed for tablets, and on tablets, you have a separate calendar app and a side-swipe widget pane (e.g. Google's phones). So from their perspective, why would you need a Calendar fly-out from the tray?

Yeah, it's dumb. Windows 11 is the 2nd biggest bundle of GUI regressions since I started using Windows in the early 90s. The biggest is Windows 8, closely followed by Windows 11 and its terrible tablet-optimised shell.

No, that's just excuse to make system useless. And there is actually a problem there. You say that it's designed for tablets, therefore it must have separate app. It doesn't need to have separate app. But that's not the case. The calendar was all the time separate program, You could just have Your events showed at clock area. For no reason they removed it. There is no single reason. Even considering tablets and if there was no app in Windows 10. They just have no idea how to make an OS.

It's been almost a month since Windows 11 started rolling out generally but since it's being distributed in a staggered manner, not everyone has received it yet. Regardless of whether or not you have received the update yet, it's worth discussing its features in more detail given that the OS is still quite new. This is exactly what we have been doing in our ongoing Closer Look series for the past couple of months.

For the purpose of this hands-on, we'll be taking a look at the generally available Windows 11 build versus a publicly available and up-to-date Windows 10 (version 21H1 build 19043.1320). Typically, we start with discussing the capabilities of a specific feature before we move on to Windows 11, we won't be doing that this time, because frankly, it's not much of an update. In fact, if anything, the Calendar app's integration with Windows 11 has been crippled almost completely, to some extent.

Talking about the Calendar app in Windows 11, you'd be forgiven for thinking that there's no difference when compared to its Windows 10 counterpart, because there really isn't any major difference. In terms of the feature-set and the general UI, it's exactly the same. The only slight difference is the rounded corners, a design staple of Windows 11, but nothing mind-blowing.

While I really like the emphasis on rounded corners, it is equally infuriating to see design inconsistencies in a native app. A glaring example of this is the Settings UI which has basically been lifted straight from Windows 10. You'll notice sharp corners and a lot of wasted space. It just leaves a bad taste in the mouth thinking that the development team thought that it was not worth updating the full UI of a native app that ships with Windows 11.

But perhaps the most controversial change when it comes to the Calendar app is its integration – or lack thereof – with Windows 11. I really liked the fact that the calendar flyout in the Windows 10 Taskbar integrated with the Calendar app and showed your agenda directly in the Taskbar. But with Windows 11, Microsoft apparently decided that it should make the lives of its customers more difficult so what better way to do that than to completely remove the integration from the calendar flyout? The (crippled) Taskbar that just keeps on giving.

What aggravates this problem even further is that Microsoft apparently wants people to utilize the Calendar app in its Widgets instead, as pointed out by Windows Latest. This move is already being protested by thousands of people on the Feedback Hub. I decided to give Microsoft a second chance and added the Calendar app to the Widgets. To my disappointment (seriously, I should be used to this by now when dealing with half-baked Microsoft software), it showed me a strangely-worded error message that "Sorry, some events from this account can't be displayed".

Clicking on the "Learn more" button directed me to a Microsoft FAQs page and neatly tucked away at the bottom, I found this gem:

If you created your Microsoft account using an email address that is not from Microsoft, that email address can’t be used to display calendar events. To see calendar events in the widget, you’ll need to create an Outlook.com account so you can use the Outlook.com email address with the Calendar widget.

Sorry Microsoft, you can't bully me into creating an Outlook.com account just so I can view agenda events from Calendar.

All in all, the Calendar app's integration with Windows 11 is a massive disappointment. It grinds my gears to know that a company could be so dismissive of clear use-cases that it would trade functionality for apparent simplicity. The icing on the cake is that it forces you to create an Outlook.com account just so you can view your agenda items from an Outlook calendar instead of a calendar of your choice, the audacity.

If you just want rounded corners and don't really care about the Calendar app, you'll be right at home with the Windows 11 app. However, if you're an active user of the Calendar app and its integration with the Windows 10 Taskbar, either don't upgrade to Windows 11 until Microsoft fixes this blunder, or, look around for third-party workarounds to accomplish the same. But at this point, Windows 11 just seems like a half-baked experiment where Microsoft shipped the bare minimum and asked third-party developers to build functionality on top of it to fix its own blunders.

Just like earlier versions, Windows 10 displays the date and time at the right side of the taskbar. But Windows 10 adds a new trick: Click the date to open a flyout that shows your agenda at a glance, bringing multiple calendars together.

If you keep one or more calendars in the cloud, you can get a unified view of your schedule in Windows 10. Just click the date and time at the right side of the taskbar to open a flyout that shows the current month, with today’s appointments in an agenda view below the calendar.

Use the up and down arrows to the right of the current month to navigate to a different month or year, and then click a day to see appointments for that day. Click the plus sign to quickly add an appointment.

The only setup you need to do to make this view possible is to open the built-in Calendar app and add each of your online calendars to it. Click the Settings icon, then click Manage Accounts.

Any accounts you’ve added from the built-in Mail app will appear here. If you want an account to show only mail and not calendar appointments, open the account settings, scroll down to the Sync Options section, and slide the Calendar switch to the Off position.

After you set this up, you can ignore the Calendar app completely. If you use Google Calendar on the web, for example, you can continue to manage appointments and events in your browser, and they’ll show up automatically in the Windows 10 agenda. The same is true if you use Office 365 or Outlook.com with Microsoft Outlook.

Each calendar you attach gets its own color coding. Appointments in the agenda have a matching stripe at the left so you can tell at a glance whether an upcoming appointment is from your personal or work calendar.

Sync your Google Calendar with the Windows Calendar app wasn’t always possible. Since the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, you can even manage your Google, iCloud, and Outlook calendars from the Taskbar. We show you how.

Not too long ago, Microsoft made it almost impossible to sync your Google Calendar with the Windows Calendar app. This all changed with the Calendar app for Windows 10. And since the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, you can manage your Google, iCloud, Outlook, and Exchange calendars straight from the Taskbar.

Let us show you how to set this all up for the smoothest calendar experience a geek could dream of.

The Windows 10 Calendar App

Our first step will be to set up the Windows 10 Calendar app, which comes pre-installed with the operating system. Press Windows key + Q to place your cursor in the Start Menu search bar, enter calendar in the search field, and open the respective Trusted Windows Store app result.

Note that if you don’t have a Microsoft account associated with Windows 10, you will be asked to add an account the moment you open the Calendar app. If you need help with this step, head to the next section of this article.

The Calendar app presents a very clean and appealing interface. We appreciate small details like the five-day weather preview, which links to more detailed forecasts on MSN Weather. Press the hamburger icon in the top left to expand or minimize the lefthand menu. Here you’ll find a compressed monthly calendar and several options like adding a new event, toggling your calendars, or adding regional holiday calendars.

Note that the Calendar app features a shortcut to the Mail app on the lefthand side. While the two apps launch independently of each other, they remain tightly connected on the backend, which we’ll see in a moment.

If you would like to change the look and feel of the calendar, go to Settings (the cogwheel button in the bottom left) > Personalization and play with the colors and background settings. You can even switch to a dark theme.

To customize your calendar view further, head to Settings > Calendar Settings. Here you can change things like the first day of the week, days in the work week, or working hours, and you can enable week numbers and alternate calendars, such as the Gregorian or Hebrew Lunar calendar views. These settings are applied across all calendars.

How to Set Up Your Calendars

The Windows 10 Calendar app supports a range of accounts and associated calendars, including Outlook.com, Live.com, Hotmail, MSN, Exchange, Office 365, Google, Yahoo! Mail, iCloud, and any Exchange ActiveSync, POP, and IMAP accounts.

To add your calendar, go to Settings > Manage Accounts > Add account.

Choose the account you would like to add and enter your login credentials. Since the account setup covers both the Mail and Calendar app at the same time, you can choose options that don’t actually include a calendar, such as Yahoo! Mail. We used a Google account with 2-step authentication enabled to set up the Calendar app and had a super smooth experience.

Once you’ve logged in successfully, you’ll see your calendars listed in the expanded menu on the left-hand side. If you’ve set up multiple calendars under a single Google account, they all will be listed under the respective account, and you can toggle each calendar view separately.

Note that events you add or remove are synced to your Google Calendar, just as you would expect. To update the frequency of the synchronization, head to Settings > Manage Accounts and select an account. Under Account settings you can change the account name (how it shows up in the sidebar) and the “mailbox” sync settings. Even though it refers to the mailbox, this option also contains settings that will apply to your calendar.

Click Change mailbox sync settings, and under Sync contacts and calendars select your preferred interval.

  • Select the New submenu and select Event .
  • Press the Shortcut Ctrl + I .
  • Click the New event button in the Today pane.
  • Double-click on Today , Tomorrow or Soon in the events overview of the Today pane.

In both Calendar Mode and Event Mode you can use the above methods but you can also use the dedicated New Event button in the “Calendar Toolbar”:

In this window you can set the details of the event. Here’s a description of all the possible values:

  • Title : The name of the event. This is what you will see when you first glance at the calendar
  • Location : Where the event will be taking place
  • Category : What type of event is it?
  • Calendar : Which calendar would you like to store the event in (see Creating new calendars)
  • Start and End : Choose the time the event begins, and the time that it ends
  • Repeat : If this event will happen again, check this box (see Creating a recurring event)
  • Reminder : Will pop up with an alarm at a specified time before the event.
  • Description : A brief summary/list of the event

By default event are assumed to have a start and end date and time.

You can set these dates and times by entering them via the keyboard in the respective field or by clicking on the drop-down arrow in that same field. You will then be presented with the following selection options:

You select a time by first selecting the hours and then the minutes. The window will close automatically after selecting the minutes.

If you want to use a time that is not shown, you can extend the selections by clicking on the >> button at the bottom right.

If the event does not have a start or end time you can select the All day event tick-box after which the start and end time will be greyed out.

To create a task follow one of these steps:

  • Click the File menu at the top of the Thunderbird window, or click the menu button .
  • Select the New submenu and select Task .
  • Press the Shortcut Ctrl + D .
  • Click the New task button in the Today pane.

To Enable Week Numbers for Calendar app in Windows 10,

  4. Scroll down to the Week Numbers option.

Note: While Mail and Calendar for Windows 10 supports Outlook, Exchange, and Office 365 accounts, they are separate applications from Outlook or Outlook.com.

I have mentioned in previous posts, with most shots, after about a handful, things will start to get a little hazy. But, with Windows 10 Shots (this new series of posts), the hope would be that the opposite would happen. That clarity and insight into the highly anticipated release would free your mind to great new features and power of Windows 10.

Microsoft just recently released their latest update for Windows 10, called Windows 10 Anniversary Update. Oh, and this isn’t just a small update either. It is a major update, with a lot of new features, performance enhancements and bug fixes.

Today, we are going to focus on changes to the Windows 10 Taskbar Date and Time. One of my favorite features on the taskbar is the time and date. Simple, to the point, right? “What time is it?” “What date is it again?” I am constantly asking myself that question. There is really no better place to look that is more convenient than on your taskbar.

However, what if you ask the question, “What is the date next Tuesday?” You might be able to figure it out if you know todays date, but, what if you don’t? If you click on the taskbar date and time, you get a quick reference calendar.

But…there is more. Check out just below the calendar. Notice that events for the chosen day are displayed, giving you a quick outlook for the day. It takes the events from your calendar application. So, if your calendar application is linked to your work and personal calendars, you get to see the combined list of all your events. Click on an event to bring it up in your calendar.

While you are looking around, you might decide that you want to add an event. Simply click on the plus button and you will be taken to your calendar application with a new event window opened.

NOTE: You can choose to hide the agenda by clicking on the Hide agenda.

Another cool feature in the time and date dialog is the list of time zones that you can add. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I mess up what time it is on the east or west coast. So, I simply added two more clocks for those time zones. (don’t judge me for not remembering such a simple thing)

To setup up to two additional clocks, all you have to do is right click on the time and/or date in the taskbar and select Adjust date/time from the menu.

From here you will be taken to the settings screen to adjust your taskbar time and date. In this screen, select Add clocks for different time zones.

Now you will be presented with the taskbar date and time settings screen. From here, you will want to fill in the information necessary for your need. I chose to have both East and West coast time zones as you can see from the image below:

Pretty nice little features that make the taskbar date and time functionality really useful. No need to open up a separate clock or calendar application to get quick information when that information is just a click away.

It looks like Microsoft is intentionally stripping away several features from the taskbar for Windows 11 in order to push Widgets.

Windows Latest reports that, despite initial hopes that the missing taskbar functions in Windows 11 were just a bug, Microsoft has confirmed they’re intentional. The aim is to encourage people to use the Windows Widgets panel, instead.

The Windows 11 calendar pop-up is one of the more notable changes, as it no longer integrates with events or agendas. Pulling up the calendar form the Windows 11 taskbar will display the dates, but you won’t be able to add new events. On the Windows Feedback Hub, Microsoft has stated that “. there is a calendar option in the new widgets experience that you can use to quickly see your personal calendar and its events.”

The clock also has been altered so that it no longer displays the time in seconds when clicked. Microsoft says that you can add up to two different clock readouts to the taskbar pop-up, but admits that displaying seconds isn't supported.

It's not just functions that can be performed via Widgets, either. Windows 11 testers are unable to ungroup apps, and can't drag apps or files to the taskbar to open them. The right-click context menu also is gone from the taskbar.

While Windows 11 isn't due for a public release for another couple of months, it's not likely that Microsoft will be making any taskbar changes. Not at first, anyway. Thus far, its only statements on the matter have been general "we'll take your feedback into consideration" type responses.
