One of the things you lose by pulling your cable box out from under your TV is its digital video recorder (DVR) functionality. You can buy a replacement that works with OTA TV channels, but there’s a better way: Use your PC or Network Attached Storage (NAS).

One such way of doing this is with Plex, the hugely popular media server software. It recently added beta DVR functionality. Here’s how you set it up.

The only things you need are a Plex Pass subscription and some form of connected TV tuner. For the purposes of this guide, we’re using a HDHomeRun Connect.

All the management of your Plex DVR will take place within the Plex Media Server web app in your PC’s browser.

How to use Plex as a DVR

  1. Go to settings in Plex Media Server.
  2. Click on server.
  3. On the sidebar, click on DVR (Beta).

Select your tuner from the box.

After your DVR has initalized, select the best guide for your area from the dropdown box.

Now your Plex server is set to receive live TV over your local network. It doesn’t allow you to watch live TV, only record it, so for that, you’ll still need something like the HDHomeRun official app or Kodi. Hopefully, in the future, you’ll be able to schedule recordings from the regular Plex apps, too.

Recording is simple, but it requires that you set up a library first. If you don’t have one, you’ll be prompted when you first try to record something. It’s a simple process that involves specifying which drive and folder to which you wish to save your recordings.

The program guide inside Plex is both easy to navigate and extremely full featured. You’re able to view by type — show, movie or radio — as well as by what’s live, starting soon and upcoming. Recording options are available to allow you to record just that one episode or all new episodes of a TV series.

Once recorded, they’ll show up in your DVR section inside any of the Plex apps you use to sync or stream at your leisure. It’s that simple

As a recent Tesla Model Y owner, I love the ability to watch movies in the car — when I stopped, either at a supercharger, or waiting for my wife at a store. It comes with Netflix, Hulu, Youtube and a few others, but so far it’s missing a Plex app.

I have a lot of movies on my Plex server at home, hosted on a NAS drive, and while I’m able to watch them from my TV, phone, tablet, etc, I’d like the convenience of watching in the car as well. So here are some instructions on how to do it, and get your Plex movies full screen in the Tesla.

How to watch youtube videos on plex

      1. Find the Plex internal IP

First of all you must find out your Plex server’s internal IP address. This could be your computer’s IP, or an external storage (like a NAS drive) IP. It will most likely be in the form of 10.0.0.xx.

      • If it’s on your Windows computer, run ipconfig from a command prompt, and it will show under Ethernet adapter (if it’s wired), or Wireless LAN adapter. (look for something in the format above).
      • If it’s on a Unix machine, you know how to do it already.
      • If it’s an external drive, you can use the Fing App on your phone, or use the tools for your drive. For example, I have a WD drive, and the WD app shows me the IP when I Open that drive.

      2. Redirect your ports

Now this might be a bit more complicated, but you must do a port forwarding in your Internet router. You have to find that option in your router’s admin page.

On Xfinity (Comcast), for example, you go to for your router’s admin page, then navigate to Advanced -> Port Forwarding, and Add Service. The Server IP will be the internal IP you found in the previous step, and the port is the Plex port — 32400.

      3. Find your external IP

The previous step will point any request to your home network to the Plex server. Now, to access it from your car, you just need to get your home network’s external IP address. There are many websites where you can go to get that IP, like or

      4. Access your Plex server from the car

In your Tesla web browser, all you have to do is to navigate to that address, and you can play movies right in the browser. The address you need is your external IP, on port 32400.

Bookmark this URL and then you can watch it at anytime.

      5. Go full screen

You’ll notice that the movie will play in the small web browser window on your Tesla screen. To go full screen, we use a trick with the Youtube redirect. You need to add the Youtube redirect link before the regular Plex URL:

Now you can watch your Plex movies full-screen in your Tesla!

There are still a few caveats to this, but they won’t prevent you from relaxing in your Tesla and watching your movies from home:

How to watch youtube videos on plex

Plex, a multimedia library application, includes support for Netflix through a plug-in. The plug-in adds the popular streaming platform to Netflix as an option to the video section of your media library.

Once you installed, you can use this plug-in to browse Netflix, search for available movies and TV shows, and watch them within the app. This plug-in only works with the Mac OS X version of Plex and unfortunately does not run on Windows, so we prepared a guide to show you how you can install and use it.

How to add Netflix and use it on Plex?

      Step 1
Install the Microsoft Silverlight plug-in on your Mac. If you can watch Netflix in your web browser, you already have Silverlight. Otherwise, open the Silverlight website, download the Silverlight installation package, double-click the downloaded file named “Silverlight.pkg” and follow the instructions on the screen.

      Step 2
Open the Netflix webpage on the Plex Online website in your internet browser. You can also select “Plex Online” in Plex to open this website.

      Step 3
Click the “Install Netflix Into Plex” link on the page to install the Netflix plug-in. Open the video library in Plex and select “Netflix” to use it.

You can also read here about the plans of Plex to integrate many major streaming platforms (Amazon, Disney +, Hulu etc.) to Plex TV, their streaming service, so it will be possible to watch them through a single interface. This also helps seeing all your library at one location.

Plex has incredible support for an extensive library of movies, music, and TV shows. It allows you to stream content directly onto your TVs from your library located on a standalone server, personal computer acting as a server.

The media player can do much more than streaming content for you. It has plugins that can enhance your viewing experience altogether.

Best Plex Plugins you should install

      • FilmOn
      • Web Tools
      • Sub-Zero
      • Tautulli
      • Plex-Sync
      • Organizr
      • Plex Import
      • Transmogrify

      #1 FilmOn

You can watch the UK, European TV Networks for free from anywhere around the world. It also has 600 free channels, while others are behind a paywall.

How to watch youtube videos on plex

There are a plethora of documentaries, comedy shows and general TV channels to watch on FilmOn.

      #2 Webtools

Webtools help you organize Plex media content and the server with ease. It is a collection of utility tools for controlling several aspects of Plex.

How to watch youtube videos on plex

As a part of the tools pack, you get subtitles management, logging too, and other management modules amongst other tools.

You can manage your Plex server easily with the tools offered by Webtools. Moreover, you can host a few apps and channels as well with the plugin.

      #3 Tautulli

Monitoring your server is essential for the smooth running of all things in the play. Tautulli is one of the best Plex plugins for you, that runs alongside your server and monitors, tracks the server activity.

How to watch youtube videos on plex

Users can also access statistics such as what has been watched, who watched it, when and where it has been watched.

Additionally, you can track/delete synced content on your server. Detailed media information for all videos, images can be viewed as well.

Moreover, users can set trigger/script notifications for events happening on your server. It would help manage traffic, load and more on the server.

      #4 SubZero

We often watch movies in foreign languages for which subtitles are a must. SubZero is one of the best plex plugins for subtitles.

There is an-built subtitle manager in Plex, which certainly lacks new features and updates. They have been instances where it failed to display subtitles at all.

Subzero searches from 10 different leading subtitles sites(with their APIs) for providing the best matching subtitles for the TV shows, movies you are watching.

Additionally, it keeps on searching for subtitles in the background for the content on your server. You will have preloaded subtitles and wouldn’t have to wait for them to load.

      #5 Plex-Sync

Another useful Plex plugin is Plex-Sync, which is a must-have for Plex servers. It syncs content across different servers which means that it will synchronize the watch time, watch/seen status across different Plex servers for various TV shows, movies and other media.

Plex-sync relies on IDs of different media libraries to sync watch status across the Plex servers of your choice with the help of CLI(Command Line Interface).

However, if you want to avoid the hassle of manually syncing content on other Plex servers, you can use Cron.

      #6 Organizr

You may be running several Plex servers at once. It is not easy to manage and track them simultaneously. Organizr helps you to set up “tabs” with individual servers where they all can be managed separately without any hassle.

You can add multiple users for the management of the Plex servers from the settings. Themes can be applied to the interface if the default skin feels monotonous.

Additionally, you can access manage your server from mobile as well, from anywhere in the world.

      #7 Plex Export

Next on the list of the best plex plugins is Plex Export. It allows you to share the list of content on your server in the form an HTML page.

How to watch youtube videos on plex

The HTML page can be shared with anyone, without sharing access to your Plex server.

Furthermore, the media display page shows an overview of all the media in each of the library sections accompanied by thumbnails. Filter content by genres, actors, etc. and get details on an episode by clicking on the thumbnails.

Plex Export requires PHP to be installed on your server.

Moreover, you will need a token for your system if Plex is running on home mode. Learn more on the token from here.

      #8 Transmogrify

There are thousands of movies worth watching, but it isn’t easy to decide on your own. Take the help of Transmogrify to view RottenTomatoes and IMDb page, ratings, and reviews of the movie, TV shows, and documentary that is present on the server.

How to watch youtube videos on plex

You can also add trailers to the movies that you are about to watch, which are fetched from YouTube. Furthermore, letterboxd pages can be viewed as well for movies.

In any case when you are on the fence about which movie, show to watch, use the random movie/tv show picker and let the plugin choose for you.

Similar to Prime Videos and Netflix, there is an actor profile for the cast members of movies, shows as well in features. It can be enabled as per user liking.

There is a Chrome extension of Transmogrify for Plex to use on web client, server

      How to Sideload/Install Plex Plugins?

Plex shut down the plugin’s support last year but luckily you can still sideload them manually. here’s how:

      1. First of all, download the plugin file/folder. If it is in compressed form like “.zip”, then extract it.
      2. Look for the “.bundle” file in the folder.
      3. Copy the .bundle file into the Plugins folder of the Plex media server.
Remember that installing some plex plugins is a complex task with a different approach that may not work with a mere copy-paste of the files.

      Over to You

Demand for Smart TVs has soared in the recent period. OTTs and the decreasing quality of Cable content are amongst the key reasons behind it.

Plex is a fantastic way to watch your favourite movies, TV shows without subscribing for expensive cable. Further, use some of the best Plex plugins to make it a more wholesome experience.

As I've noticed, many iTunes users faced difficulties when they tried playing iTunes M4V movie purchases on Plex. The possible situations include "Plex won't play iTunes M4V files", "iTunes M4V movies not show up in Plex" and so on. Problems such as "Can Plex stream M4V" and "Does Plex stream M4V" also emerge and may get you confused. So this is the topic we are going to talk about today. If you get frustrated with these playback issues on Plex, here you can find a solution.

      What is Plex?

Plex is actually a combination of two things: a server where all of your media sits, and a client, which you use to access your data.

      • The Server –The Plex media server is a program which runs in the background on the host computer, and is responsible for managing the media by searching selected folders called sources.

      • The Client – The Plex client is a program that you run when you want to access your media. It accesses your media from any Plex media server on your network.

Speaking of the Plex Media Server, it is a user-friendly program allowing you to store movies, TV shows, photos, and other media in one place. The files you saved in Plex are accessible from any supported device, which is helpful no matter when you're at home or on-the-go. Technically, Plex can organize all your media content together, and thus help you stream the files you saved on Plex to some common streaming devices or TVs, such as Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, and Samsung Smart TV. If you're looking for a no-headache way to watch your collected digital movies anywhere, this is it.

Why the M4V from iTunes can't be Played via Plex

In fact, Plex media Server supports all common video formats including MP4, MKV, AVI, MOV, DIVX, and more. However, Plex has stated clearly that it doesn't support iTunes video in M4V format for playing or streaming. The main reason is that most of the iTunes videos come with FairPlay DRM protection, which prevents the iTunes M4V movies from playing on non-Apple devices. Of course, Plex is included. But it is still possible to stream M4V movies via Plex as long as you remove the DRM.

Guide on How to Convert M4V Movies for Playing on Plex

TuneFab M4V Converter is highly recommended to crack DRM from purchased or rented M4V movies. It can help you convert M4V to a universal MP4 format thus removing the DRM protection. And all the original audio tracks and subtitles will be preserved in converted MP4 files. Once the conversion finished, you can stream the M4V movies with Plex Media Server and watch them on any device in your house.

Note: TuneFab M4V Converter (Windows) is not able to convert iTunes rental videos/movies currently. Mac users, however, can convert their iTunes rentals with TuneFab M4V Converter.

      Step 1. Add M4V Videos

Install the program after downloading it. And then launch the TuneFab M4V Converter. Then click the "Add Files" button to add iTunes videos. Select the movies you want to convert. When your iTunes movies are added to the conversion list, don't forget to click "Add" to proceed to the conversion screen .

How to watch youtube videos on plex

Step 2. Choose Audio Tracks and Subtitles

TuneFab M4V Converter will preserve all original subtitles and audio tracks by default. And you are free to select and preserve your needed audio tracks or subtitles.

How to watch youtube videos on plex

      Step 3. Convert M4V to MP4

Click the "Convert" button to remove DRM and convert M4V to MP4. The whole conversion will be finished soon. You can find the converted files from the "History" button.

How to watch youtube videos on plex

With TuneFab M4V Converter, it makes it possible to stream and play iTunes movies via Plex. Now you can convert the iTunes M4V videos to MP4 and then add the converted iTunes movies to the Plex media server freely and enjoy watching. How to watch youtube videos on plex

Get yourself a Google Nest Hub or an Amazon Echo Show, and you’ve got a device that can do everything a smart speaker can—plus play videos. It’s not always obvious which video apps work on these smart displays, or what you can do with them, which is why we curated this list of what you can run and can’t run right now.

There’s one conspicuous omission: Netflix. You can’t run Netflix on either the Echo Show or the Nest Hub, and you can’t use the Chromecast feature built into the Nest Hub either, because Netflix doesn’t recognise these devices as displays in the same way a service like Plex does.

Here is every video-streaming app that works on your smart display.

YouTube is the default video player on the Nest Hub, as you might expect, and you can just ask to “play some cat videos” or “play Billie Eilish videos” to fire up a list of clips. It’s a bit hit or miss; if you’re looking for a specific video, you’re better off finding it on your phone and beaming it over to the Nest Hub.

The Nest Hub doubles as a Chromecast device and will automatically show up on your network. Simply load up YouTube on your phone (or your laptop), find the video you’re after, and tap on the Chromecast button. Select your Nest Hub and playback starts. To control playback, use your phone or the touchscreen controls on the device itself.

There’s no app interface for YouTube on the Nest Hub, but using the touchscreen controls, you can skip through videos in a playlist, turn subtitles on and off, and start and stop playback. You can also access recommended YouTube videos from the front screen, but you can’t search for specific clips.

YouTube is available on the Echo Show as well, though you need to mention it by name (“play some cat videos on YouTube”), then pick from the search results that appear in a browser window (either Amazon’s Silk browser or Firefox). From there, launch the video manually and play it full-screen. It’s more difficult than it needs to be, but once playback starts, it’s fine—and unlike on the Nest Hub, you can actually look for specific videos.

How to watch youtube videos on plexImage: Google

      Amazon Prime Video

Unsurprisingly, the Echo Show shines when using an Amazon streaming service. However, if you just ask Alexa to play some videos on any topic without specifying a service, it’ll just run a generic web search—on Bing, in fact—and return the top video result. To get something up on Prime Video, you need to specify a show or movie title, a type of content, or a genre.

“Alexa, play Fleabag,” works, for example, as does, “Alexa, play Olympus Has Fallen.” As long as you know what you’re looking for on Prime Video, the service will jump straight to it. If you want to have a browse, ask Alexa to show you movies or shows, and you can scroll through them and launch titles on the device’s screen.

You can be more specific and ask to see comedy films or detective shows or sitcoms. Asking for specific actors works as well, in case you suddenly feel the need to binge watch everything Tom Hanks or Rooney Mara has appeared in (you’re limited by what’s on Amazon Prime Video, but still).

At the moment there’s no way to watch Amazon Prime Video on a Google Nest Hub. The Prime Video apps have a Chromecast feature, but, like Netflix, they don’t recognise the Nest Hub as a proper display. You’re going to have to use another screen to catch up on your Prime Video movies and shows.

How to watch youtube videos on plexScreenshot: Gizmodo

Plex prides itself on working on as many different devices as possible, and it has introduced support for the Nest Hub. You need to launch Plex on your phone first, then hit the Chromecast button, then choose your Nest Hub. Playback can be controlled on your mobile device or via the touchscreen.

You can’t play Plex movies and shows on an Echo Show with a voice command, but you can access it through the Silk or Firefox browsers. It’s not easy navigating the Plex site on an Echo Show screen with a touchscreen keyboard, and one or two screens aren’t properly formatted, but you can get it to work.

Amazon owns Twitch, so Twitch integration is built right into the Echo Show, as expected. Just say, “Alexa, open Twitch,” or, “Alexa, ask Twitch for popular channels,” for example, to start watching. You can specify particular channels and games, too.

Over on the Nest Hub, Twitch is one of the apps that recognises Google’s smart display when you tap on the Chromecast button, so you can tune into Twitch streams if you’ve got a phone to hand. You can’t open Twitch natively with a voice command on a Nest Hub.

How to watch youtube videos on plex

Vimeo works on the Google Nest Hub, but you need to take the Chromecast route; you can’t just launch the service with a voice command. Launch the video you want to watch on Android or iOS, tap the Chromecast button, and pick your smart display. Playback can be controlled from the app on your phone or the touchscreen.

If you want to watch Vimeo videos on the Echo Show, you’ll need to go the browser route using Amazon’s Silk browser or Firefox, whichever you prefer. Just say, “Alexa, open…” followed by the name of the browser. You can then log into Vimeo and browse through the videos on offer, then play them full-screen. It’s not ideal, but it works.

Media centers are the perfect place to store collections of images, music, and videos that people create on their computers, smartphones, or other devices. Their primary function is to store this media, such as your latest vacation photos or your favorite film. However, you may find your patience being tested if you start searching for a particular file, only to realize that nothing is organized properly.

If you’re looking for a suitable management platform for your media files, you will no doubt come across Plex eventually. Launched as a freeware project in 2007, Plex has an impressive range of features and is undoubtedly one of the best media centers of all time. Thanks to various streaming portals and services like Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, or Vevo, Plex users can play online content directly through their media center interface. However, Plex does have some formidable alternatives.

What should a good alternative to Plex be able to do?

The primary function of a media center is to organize all media files (audio, video, and image) on the selected computer system in a clearly arranged format. The user interface should make it easy for you to find and play back the content you want.

Plex alternatives (as well as Plex itself) should not just allow playback on the original device, but should also be able to play through external devices. Streaming your own media content on a TV should be a standard feature, which is why most media center interfaces are also designed to be used with smart TVs.

The best Plex alternatives should also be able to stream video and information services. Of course, your personal interests are most important here: Netflix and YouTube are more widely supported than other services because of their popularity. However, if you are not interested in these mainstream platforms, streaming links will be irrelevant to you as a user. It is therefore advisable to check the additional features in advance (often available as optional add-ons) that can be used as a respectable alternative to Plex. It is also important that the selected media management option allows multiple devices to access the library at the same time. If you want to enjoy a film while a roommate or a family member is streaming music, your chosen Plex alternative must always be usable by several people at the same time.

Plex is a media streaming platform that allows you to watch movies, tv shows, and personal videos from any device. If you have media files with embedded subtitles or a separate sidecar caption file, you can view the closed captions and foreign subtitles on your device during playback.

This article will explain how to add closed captions and subtitles to your local media files on Plex to display when you open them on your devices.

      Preparing Your Plex Library

In order to use local subtitles (embedded subtitles or external subtitle files), you’ll need to configure the Local Media Assets source.

To do this, open Plex. Go to SETTINGS. Select your media server. Choose AGENTS. Select the library type and agent to change. Check the ‘Local Media Assets’ and put it at the top of the list.

Once you’ve completed these steps, you’ll need to refresh the entire library. Find “Refresh All Metadata” and perform this action.

      Subtitle Formats Supported in Plex

The following subtitle formats are supported by Plex and are compatible during playback for both external subtitle files and embedded tracks:

      • .SRT, .SMI, .SSA, .ASS, .VTT

You can get closed captions and foreign subtitles for your Plex videos from Rev.

      Embedded Subtitles

Media files that have subtitle tracks embedded in them are a way to package up closed captions and subtitles for your media files. It will require you to use software and take some time, and there’s no particular reason to do this method over the sidecar caption method below.

You can embed captions and subtitles into your media files with tools like Handbrake, as well as from your video editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro.

      External Subtitle Files

If you’re uploading sidecar caption and subtitle files separate of the media file to Plex, you’ll want to be sure they are named properly.

      Media File Naming

Your Movie files should be named like this.

      • Movie_Name (Release Date)

      Subtitle Naming

And your subtitle files should then be named:

      • Movie_Name (Release Date).[Language_Code].ext
      • Movies/Movie_Name (Release Date).[Language_Code].ext

TV Show subtitles should be named like this:

      • TV Shows/Show_Name/Season XX/Show_Name SxxEyy.[Language_Code].ext

If you are including a “forced subtitle” track for sequences of a language foreign to the viewer, you’ll want to format the names as such:

      • Movie_Name (Release Date).[Language_Code].forced.ext
      • Movies/Movie_Name (Release Date).[Language_Code].forced.ext

Getting Captions For Plex Media Files

If you need closed captions and foreign subtitles for your TV shows, movies, and videos in Plex, use With Rev, you get closed caption files supported by Plex (.SRT, .VTT) as well as several foreign language subtitles to translate your English content.

You even have the option to burn-in captions onto your media files, so you don’t have to worry about uploading external caption files or embedding them; when burned in they are always on and can’t be turned off.
