Both my Ubuntu and Android phone are using the same Wi-Fi. How can I transfer files between the phone and the PC? Is there any way to mount the Android file system? I don’t want to use the USB cable. Bluetooth doesn’t work. So WiFi is the only other option.

The Android version is Jelly Bean and Ubuntu is 12.04 LTS.

There is a free application on the Google Play store called Software Data Cable:

Once you’ve installed it, turn on your WiFi connection and launch the app.

Installing the GNOME Shell Extension

To make the connection between Android and Linux, a GNOME Extension must be first installed. To do this, follow these steps:

Install a necessary dependency with the command:

What’s the maximum transfer rate I can get?

Well, this depends on many factors. Our testing indicates that speeds between 20-40 Mbps are optimal in most cases. Some users with high-end devices were able to reach even greater speeds at around 75 Mbps.

Help me! The transfer rate is very slow, what can I do?

Try turning off WiFi on both sender and receiver before starting SuperBeam. This will force direct mode to kick in when you start sharing which will allow for much greater speeds.

Is there any limitation on the number of files I can send?

No! You can send unlimited number of files of any type and size, as long as the receiving device has enough space to store them. This applies to both the free and paid version of SuperBeam.

Where do the received files go?

All received files are stored by default in the internal storage under SuperBeam directory. PRO version users get the option to change this to any other directory they prefer.

Which TCP ports does SuperBeam use for sharing data?

SuperBeam uses the first available port from the following pool: 8080, 8888, 8081, 9000, 9999, 9090, 10000, 54321 and 55555. If all of these ports were used, it will select a randomly available port instead.

Does SuperBeam support carrier-locked (on-contract) devices?

Unfortunately, most carrier-locked devices have inherent limitations that block SuperBeam from starting the connection. These device can only receive files through SuperBeam, and send to other devices that are connected to the same WiFi network.

I get “Connection drop” errors every time I try to receive files. What should I do?

Turn off WiFi on the sending device before starting SuperBeam, then retry sharing. If you must have both devices connected to the same WiFi network, make sure that your network firewall allows connection to the ports indicated earlier.

I recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy S (the Captivate version) and I naturally wanted to be able to transfer files between it and my Linux desktop. I’m using KDE 4.5 on Kubuntu 10.04, but there are probably ways to do this using Gnome as well.

Initially I used a USB cable and configured the phone as a Mass Storage Device, but then I got to thinking that there had to be a way to use WiFi instead. Especially since I didn’t keep a compatible USB cable at my main computer. After a little searching I came a across a great app called SwiFTP.

SwiFTP is a nifty FTP server that’s very easy to use, but will need some basic setup the first time you use it. There is a prominent Setup button and pressing it allows you to enter a username and password. Do that, press Save, and you’ll go back to the main page. Touch Start and you’re in business. You’ll see a WiFi URL listed that you’ll need for the next step.

Moving to your KDE desktop, load Dolphin and type “ftp://” followed by the WiFi address found in the step above. Enter the username and password when prompted. Now you can use your phone just like any other drive on your computer and easily drag and drop files within Dolphin. And by right-clicking the folder and saving it to Places you’ll always have a link in the left sidebar.

The final configuration step depends upon your router. If your’s allows a device to be assigned the same IP address every time it’s a great way to make sure you don’t have to make any adjustments next time you connect.

When you’re done transferring files press Stop in the SwiFTP app on your phone and everything goes back to how it was with no security holes.

HTC Desire

Does not seem to work with HTC Desire. Running Android 2.2. Got the Wifi URL right, tried from Dolphin, Konqueror and Chromium . did not work!

I have proxy server setup under KDE. So, i also tried excluding the ftp server IP from proxy . no go!

Are you looking for a way to quickly copy files from your iPhone or Android mobile device to your Linux computer or from your Linux computer to your devices? I recently discovered an open source application that’s easy to install and makes transferring files as simple as a QR code.

The qrcp project provides a command that generates a QR code in your terminal that allows you to send or receive files to your computer over the network.

Install qrcp on Linux, Windows, or Mac

The developer, Claudio d’Angelis, has released the qrcp application with an MIT license. I found it easy to install and easy to use. It’s available for Linux, Windows, and macOS, and can be downloaded as an RPM, DEB, or tarball. There are builds for nearly every platform, including the Raspberry Pi.

If you want to install it on Linux, download either the RPM or DEB and use your package manager to perform a local install. For example, on Fedora, CentOS, or Mageia, or similar:

Set up qrcp

The first step is to create a configuration file. The qrcp config command takes you through this process, but there are a few tricky questions.

The first question asks you for a fully-qualified domain name. If you’re using qrcp on a local network that doesn’t use fully-qualified domain names (or if you don’t know one way or the other), then leave this blank. The qrcp command will use your local IP address instead.

The next question prompts you for a port. Most firewalls block non-standard ports, but it’s not uncommon to recognize port 8080 as Internet traffic. If your firewall blocks port 8080, then you’ll still have to add an exception. Assuming your system uses firewalld , you can allow traffic on port 8080 with this command:

Decline the option to keep the network connection alive after the transfer is complete and let qrcp generate a random path.

Assuming you’re on a trusted network, use an HTTP (not HTTPS) connection, so you don’t have to configure TLS.

  1. Go to Unity (Search your computer) and search for Personal File Sharing. Click on it and you will get the personal file sharing preferences window. Check the boxes as shown in the image to enable the system for receiving files.

Another simple but a little indirect method to share your photos is to use any cloud storage provider using an Android app. You can, in fact, use Google Drive itself to upload photos from the Android smartphone and then download it from your PC by going to the Google Drive. #3 Bluetooth: Old, but still reliable for small files

Despite this connection generally used for headphones and speakers, but on some occasions, it would help too. If the phone and computer have a Bluetooth component inside them, it will allow file transfer without any software.

But the pairing process sometimes takes too long, and speed performance is slower especially for transferring large files. So, if the intended data only a couple of megabytes, Bluetooth connection may be still worth using.

Must be at least a dozen ways to do this, depending on what you are trying to acheive and how often.
So do you want the files shared to be synced ?
Which direction are files (in the main going) ?
Are the devices up on a LAN wireless ?
How often do you want thsi to happen?
etc.
Please let us know so more details before a suitable

I use two methods, to get a few files generally from phone to PC or visa versa probably once every few weeks.
1. Plug phone using USB cable into USB on laptop and mount the phonce SD card
2. I also use an android App. called “FTP server”, and on PC use “filezilla” or even dolphin file manager to browse ftp site that phone exposes. In this case I use wireless LAN so no messing with cables.

There are a few methods that I’ve previously discussed, but none are as versatile as using Wi-Fi and a browser. Installation

As with any Android application, WiFi File Transfer can be installed with these simple steps:

  1. Open the Google Play Store
  2. Search for “wifi file” (no quotes)
  3. Tap on the WiFi File Transfer entry (or the Pro version if you know that you want to purchase the software)
  4. Tap on the Install button
  5. Tap Accept

Once the installation is complete, you’ll find the application in your app drawer (you might also find a launcher on the home screen). Tap the icon to begin using the application.

Usage

As I already mentioned, you must first make sure your device is connected to the same wireless network as the desktop machine(s) you wish to transfer files to/from. Once you have that taken care of, open the WiFi File Transfer tool and tap the Start button (Figure A) to start the file transferring service.

Once you tap the Start button, you’ll be given the IP address and port that will allow you to connect through your desktop browser. Point any browser to this address:port combination (if the browser is on the same network as the wireless device), and you’ll see the following handy web interface (Figure B).

The interface is set up with four main sections:

  • File browser: Where you can navigate your device file structure and download files
  • Media gallery: Where you can view a thumbnail gallery of your device’s images
  • Device information: Get storage information of the device at a glance
  • Transfer files: Where you can transfer files and folders (Chrome only) to the device

To transfer a file to your device, follow these steps:

  1. Point your browser to the WiFi File Transfer web page
  2. Click the Select Files button under Transfer files to device
  3. In the file manager, locate the file to be uploaded and click Open
  4. Click Start upload from the main window
  5. Allow the upload to complete

To download files from your device, do the following:

  1. In the file browser, navigate to the location of the file
  2. Select the file(s) to be downloaded (Figure C)
  3. Click the Download button
  4. Select to download the files individually or as a zipped archive
  5. Allow the download to complete

You can download as many files as you need.

If you want to download media, you can quickly download from the thumbnail gallery. Here’s how:

  1. Click on the Media gallery tab
  2. Navigate to the file you want to download
  3. Click on the Download link (Figure D)

You can also just view the file in the gallery by clicking the thumbnail image or the file name.

Password protection

Once your Android tablet is on the network, anyone who knows the password could add or remove files to that tablet — but not if you password protect the WiFi File Transfer application. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open the application
  2. Tap the Settings button
  3. Tap Access Password
  4. Enter a password to be used
  5. Tap OK

Now, when anyone points their browser to that address:port, they’ll have to enter the password to gain access.
