Isn’t it brilliant being able to control your Hue lights with your voice? Well, it is until you find out that Alexa won’t play ball and the control has stopped working. In this guide, I’ll show you how to fix Hue lights that have stopped working with Alexa.

I’ll run through the most common fixes, for the most common errors, which include all lights not working, or just one bulb in particular that will not play ball. Once you’ve finished, you’ll have everything working properly again.

Power cycle the Hue Bridge

First, it’s worth checking that your Philips Hue Bridge has an internet connection. All three lights at the top of the Bridge should be on. In order, they are the power button, network connection button and internet connection button. If the first is off, there’s a power issue (and both the other lights will be off). If the second light is off, then it means that you have a problem with the connection to your router, so check the cabling (this will also mean that the third light is off). Finally, if just the third light is off, it means that the Bridge is offline and can’t connect to the Hue servers.

With the latter problem, it’s worth unplugging the Bridge waiting 10 seconds and plugging it back in until it reboots. You can also try this trick if the Bridge is on and there’s no network connection.

Disable (and re-enable) the Alexa skill

Sometimes the Alexa Skill can lose its connection to the Hue, and the easiest way to fix it is to remove and re-add. To do this, go to the Alexa app, tap More, Skills & Games, then tap Search. Enter Hue, and then tap Disable Skill. Then tap Enable To Use to reconnect the Skill, and log back in to your Hue account.

Fix Alexa Group issues

Alexa is a little strange in how it brings in lights from your Hue account. It shows each bulb individually, but it also brings in the Hue Room groupings. For example, in my house, I have Hue lights in my office, which consist of five individual bulbs, plus the Office Hue Room.

I’ve had issues where the Hue Room is not in the same group as the individual bulbs, which has meant that Alexa will fail (at random) to control one or more bulbs. Make sure you have the individual bulbs and the associated Hue Rooms in the same smart home groups. My guide on how to create Alexa smart home groups explains how you go about this.

Fix unresponsive lights

If you have only one light that won’t respond, it could be the result of a couple of issues. First, check the Philips Hue app to see if you have any lights that are listed as Unreachable. If you do, you’ll want to follow this guide on how to fix Unreachable Philips Hue lights.

If this doesn’t fix your problem, or you don’t have any Unreachable lights, then one method that often addresses grouping problems is to simply remove the glitchy light and re-add it.

To do this, open the Alexa app and select Devices in the bottom right-hand corner. Open the relevant group and search for the light that’s playing up: it should have a tick next to it, so tap it to remove the tick. Hit Save, then select the group again, tap on the light so that the tick appears and hit Save again.

Try asking Alexa to turn on the group and your missing light should now be back in action.

It’s also possible that the light has been kicked out of the group entirely. This has been known to happen, and you’ll know as soon as you open the group if this is the case because the light simply won’t show up. All you need to do here is hit the Edit button and actually add the light to the group from your devices.

Be careful of third-party tools

Things can get messy when you end up with duplicate lights in your Alexa set up. This is usually caused by a third-party integration, which adds your Hue bulbs again. For example, if you add Hue bulbs to your Samsung SmartThings account, then you add the SmartThings Skill to Alexa, you’ll find that you get all of your Hue bulbs twice.

Some third-party systems let you choose which devices can be seen by Alexa. In fact, SmartThings used to allow this, but since the company has changed apps and created a new Alexa Skill, this feature has been removed. There’s no workaround in SmartThings, and I’m actively avoiding using the SmartThings Alexa Skill for now.

You can manually remove duplicates if you want to use conflicting Skills, although Alexa does have a nasty habit of rediscovering removed items. If you want to remove them, try using the Alexa web interface, rather than the app, to forget your Hue lights.

Philips Hue lights are some of the best smart home lighting equipment out there, however like any piece of tech they are not without their faults.

Here, we will present some of the most common issues that you can come across while using Philips Hue lights and their solutions.

Please Note: The Philips Hue Starter Kit on Amazon comes with two bulbs and a bridge.

Issue #1 – The Hue Bridge Cannot Command Your Hue bulbs

It gets quite frustrating when your Philip Hue app is not allowing you to add lights. There are however a few steps you can take to solve this problem.

  • The first light means the bridge is receiving power.
  • The second light means it is successfully connected to a network.
  • The third light shows that your bridge has internet connectivity.
  • The fourth light shows that the Hue app has control of the lights. If any of the light does not light, then you need to reconnect the bridge again.

Depending on which lights are not showing, you either have an issue with your power, internet connection or bulb communication.

To connect your Hue bridge to the Hue bulbs first ensure the bulbs are actually Hue bulbs. Hue bridge app can only find hue bulbs specifically and since other Philips products look just like the Hue bulbs check to make sure you are using the right ones.

Through the app, you can auto search or manual search for bulbs to add to the Hue Bridge. Sometimes the auto search function is inefficient so we recommend you use the manual search.

After finding the bulb on the app, you will need to insert the additional bulb(s) serial number and hit OK. You can add up to 50 to one bridge!

If the bulbs are still unreachable after a successful addition, check whether the bulbs are turned on. Also make sure the bulbs are near each other for them to receive signals from other bulbs and the Hue Bridge.

Issue #2 – Philips Hue Lights Unreachable

When you turn on one of the Philips Hue bulb without using the Philips Hue app or your Amazon Echo, there is a high chance that will cause connectivity issues. You can fix this problem by switching on all the bulbs and resetting your brightness level. If this fails to work:

a. Open the Philips Hue app,

b. Go to settings,

c. Tap on light setup

d. Search for the bulb/s that the app can’t control

e. Erase the bulb/s and add it again

If you are using the Amazon Echo, simply ask Alexa to turn off the lights and turn them back on.

Issue #3 – No Hue Connection

It’s almost impossible to avoid this kind of problem. If it happens, it is really likely that your lights have stopped communicating with the bridge.

You should check your internet connection by looking at light #4 on the Hue bridge and possibly restart your bridge. It also helps to manually turn the lights off and on again 🙂

Issue #4 – Flickering and Buzzing Bulbs

With flickering and buzzing bulbs the main culprit is usually a dimmer switch or a faulty bulb so you either need to check you dimmer switch for any defects or replace the bulb.

Issue #5 – Amazon Alexa and Philips Hue Connection Problems

If the Amazon Echo does not connect to your Philips Hue here is the solution:

a. Restart both the Philips Hue bridge and the Echo.

b. Disable and re-enable the Philips Hue skill using your Alexa app.

c. Use the Forget option in the Alexa app to disconnect your bridge from the Echo
and try to link them again.

Please Note: Make sure your Bridge and the Amazon Echo are connected to the same WiFi network. This is not necessary but it helps with the pairing.

Ensure the group name assigned to your Philips Hue setup in the Alexa app is easily
understood by Alexa.

For example, if the group name is Tbler00m lights, rename it to table-room lights by opening the app on your smart phone and renaming it there. You can also create a better group name and add your device to the group.

Christmas morning should be a time of giving and togetherness, not shattered dreams and nervous breakdowns. But sometimes joy turns to anger when your friend or loved one gets stuck trying to set up a smart-home device they received as a gift. Because these devices may require complicated setups, including smartphone apps, Wi-Fi passwords, and integration with a smart speaker, there are a lot of ways things could go wrong. Before you call someone a name you can’t take back, take a breath and read our answers to the most common smart-home questions we receive.

1. Why can’t I get my device to connect to my home network?

Most current Wi-Fi routers transmit using two wireless frequencies (bear with us): 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The problem is, almost all smart-home devices can use only the 2.4 GHz one, so if your phone is connected to your network on the 5 GHz band, it won’t be able to see or communicate with your brand-new smart-home device (this seems to be the most confounding issue we regularly confront). Before you plug anything in or download an app, make sure your smartphone is connected to the network your smart device will live on, and that it’s 2.4 GHz. (You can find a few security cameras and other devices that may be able to connect to a 5 GHz network, but we don’t recommend going in that direction due to issues with wireless range.)

If you still can’t get your device to connect, your Wi-Fi signal strength may be to blame. If you have areas in your home where your phone or laptop can’t connect, your new smart plug or camera won’t be able to either. If you can, move your router to a central location or consider installing a mesh router, an extender, or a repeater.

2. Do I need to download a special app?

Almost every smart device requires you to use an app to perform the setup process and sometimes to control it. Smart bulbs, smart plugs, cameras, garage-door controllers—they all use apps. The good news is, the apps are free to download. But not all devices work with both iOS and Android (and some devices may work with only certain smartphone models), so make sure the smart device is compatible with your smartphone before you buy.

Also, we say “almost every smart device” because models that work with Apple HomeKit typically do not need a separate app for setup, though you may still need an app for advanced features. (This is one of the reasons people love HomeKit so much.) The same goes for certain devices that you can set up through Amazon’s Alexa app.

3. Why does this device need my email address and a password?

Companies ask you to register an email address and a password so that you have a secure way to access your devices (they also let you know about updates and sometimes send marketing messages to you, too). Otherwise, anyone might be able to connect to and control your thermostat, say, or peek through your security cameras.

The username may be an email address, a phone number, or just a random name. (It’s never all three.) But the most important element is to use a strong password—and it’s critical to use a unique one for every single device you use. Don’t reuse the same username-and-password combo for your smart devices or anything else—as everybody knows, sites get hacked, and once your password combo is stolen from one site, it’s only a matter of time before wrongdoers try it out on another. (This is the kind of thing that has happened with Ring and Nest customers, among many others.) We think everyone should use a password manager, which can create uncrackable passwords and then store them so you don’t have to memorize anything.

4. Why is this device asking to know my location?

Using your smartphone’s location is one of the key ways you can make your smart home smart. Some systems require an address or an approximate location for setup purposes so that they can offer features such as geofencing, which can trigger things like thermostats and cameras to go on and off based on your location. Other apps can trigger lighting, sprinklers, and other devices to go on based on local weather, which requires your whereabouts.

Addresses are also essential for devices that connect to emergency services, such as security systems and smoke alarms.

Don’t like it? Both iOS and Android devices offer the option to turn off location tracking in their Settings menus. Of course, doing so means you can’t take advantage of those conveniences. Also remember that even if your lighting, cameras, and other smart-home devices aren’t tracking you, other apps and your smartphone are still doing that.

5. Why won’t the app connect to my smart device?

Device setup should be easy if you have all of the pieces—including yourself—in place. Many devices (even Wi-Fi ones) depend on a Bluetooth signal for the installation, and Bluetooth has a short range. That means your phone needs to be within a few feet of the device to initially connect to it. Once the device is all set up, you can go on your merry way and use Wi-Fi to connect remotely. (Of course, be sure you’re on your home’s 2.4 GHz network.)

If a device doesn’t have Wi-Fi built in, you may be limited by the range of Bluetooth. Some devices, such as Philips Hue smart bulbs, Ring outdoor lighting, and Lutron in-wall light switches, rely on other wireless signals; they require installing a bridge or hub to connect to them and also gain remote access.

6. Why is my brand-new device insisting I download a file?

Often when you set up a new smart-home device, the process immediately prompts you to download a software update. Don’t worry—it isn’t spyware. It’s just that in the weeks or months between when the device was manufactured and the day you’re opening its packaging in your living room, the company has made improvements—and it wants to pass those fixes on to you. Some of these updates may add new features or even critical security improvements, so download that file. Once you have everything set up, most devices will update automatically or allow you to enable automatic updates so the process will be seamless in the future.

I can’t connect my smart home devices to Wi-Fi

Perhaps the most common problem when setting up a smart home device is failure to get it online. Whether you have one of the best Wi-Fi routers or best mesh Wi-Fi systems, you need your smart home device to recognize your Wi-Fi network so it can communicate with the other connected products you own.

There are a few reasons you might see error messages related to your network. First, not all smart home devices are compatible with both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi bands — in fact, most will only connect to the 2.4GHz band. You can check the band your setup device (your smartphone) is connected to by viewing your network profile or settings.

Alternatively, you might need to read up on how to make your Wi-Fi faster or where to place your router for the best Wi-Fi signal. It’s possible your network is bogged down or doesn’t reach your new smart home device’s location. In that case, you might need one of the best Wi-Fi extenders. And if all else fails, try restarting your router — yes, the off/on method works sometimes.

I can’t drill holes into walls

Do you rent your living space? You might face restrictions when it comes to renovations, no matter how minor. Perhaps you can’t even drill holes in your wall. Luckily, all the best renter-friendly smart home devices can be powered through batteries or using your existing outlets. No need to learn what a neutral wire is or why you need a C-Wire.

You’ll likely want to avoid installing any of the best video doorbells or best smart thermostats, and replacing existing switches with smart ones is a lot of work for a place of temporary living. Instead, consider raising your home’s IQ with smart speakers, lights and plugs. Or using stick-up cameras instead of video doorbells. Routines then introduce automation that anyone can achieve with the proper hardware — even in a rented abode.

Should I use Alexa, HomeKit or Google Home?

You can use Alexa, HomeKit and Google Home, if you like. Not all, but many of the best Alexa compatible devices are also the best Google Home compatible devices and best HomeKit devices. Still, when it comes to creating routines and an organized dashboard to control your smart home (who wants to download a dozen different smart home apps?), it can help to commit to one platform.

In our DIY smart home we chose Alexa over Google Assistant because of services like Alexa Guard and Alexa Hunches. But we’ve also been using HomeKit more regularly, since it integrates easily with the iPhone and Apple Watch. And if you use Google services daily, you might want to use Nest devices and Google Assistant instead of Alexa or Siri.

Either way, you’ll probably want one of the best Alexa speakers, best Google Home speakers or a HomePod mini to establish your smart home’s foundation. Before you buy any new smart home devices going forward, look at the packaging or fine print to ensure they support the platform you choose.

I’m on a tight budget

Building a smart home doesn’t need to be expensive. In fact, taking the DIY route can help you save thousands. All the best cheap smart home devices cost under $100, and often much less. Smart plugs go for about $20, as can a pack of smart light bulbs. The Echo Dot costs just $49. There are even brands like Wyze committed to affordable gadgets for every part of your home. Have you heard of the $25 Wyze Cam v3?

So don’t feel pressured to splurge on Philips Hue lights if they’re outside your budget. Of course inexpensive devices could, and often do, have their share of caveats. We suggest sticking to well-known brands and smaller setups within your budget.

Do I need to be worried about privacy?

Smart home devices often use our learned behavior to better adapt to our needs and routines. Many have microphones built-in, so they can await a command or stay alert for suspicious sounds. Some even have cameras that you can watch anywhere from your smartphone.

So yes, you need to be concerned about privacy, but it’s not beyond your control. The vast majority of smart home “hackers” have been the result of people using poor passwords. When setting up accounts for your various smart home devices, be sure to read up on how to create strong passwords. It could give you peace of mind to buy products with physical mute switches or shutters, so you can disable the microphone or camera whenever you want.

Also run firmware updates as they become available for your devices. Firmware updates can protect your devices from possible vulnerabilities or hacks. You’ll want to know how to secure your Wi-Fi, too.

✅ I’m getting black screen / white screen (blank screen) when I open Philips Hue Bridge v1?

It is one of the most common problem in mobile phones and tablets. Usually when you open an app, you will see a black screen for few seconds and then app will crash with or without an error message. There are few ways to fix this problem.

  1. Most of the times, it might be a temporary loading issue. You just need to press the recent applications menu (usually the first left button) in your phone. Then you close the app that has this issue. Now open the app again. It may work normally.
  2. Try to restart your iPhone / iPad. Press the power off button for few seconds and then choose restart from the menu to restart your device.Now you can try opening the app, it may work fine.
  3. If none of the above working, you can wait till your phone battery drains and it turns off automatically. After that put it to charge, and press the power button. It may work after this.
  4. Finally, if you can’t fix it with anything, you may need to uninstall the app and re-install it. iOS usually provides an option to restore settings and content from iCloud backup, if you’ve enabled it previously.
  5. Even in some rare cases, the re-install step also don’t work. If that is your case, try installing older versions of the app. Good luck!

We’re all looking to bring a little extra brightness into the end a difficult year. But no matter what holiday you celebrate, there’s a chance you may find yourself tangling with Christmas string lights this season. Burned-out bulbs, strands that light up only halfway (or not at all), and let’s not forget those knots.

You don’t have to go too far down the internet rabbit hole on Christmas lights before encountering complicated electrical diagrams and DIY’ers offering tips on how to rewire your plugs. Fascinating? Yes. How I want to spend my December? No.

For those of us not quite as skilled in the electrical trade, here are some common problems with string lights and how to solve them.

One bulb is out, but the rest of the string works

You’re in luck. This is the simplest fix, requiring you to simply swap out the bulb for a new one. Assuming your bulbs are removable — not hardwired, as some LED strings are — there should be spare bulbs in the original box. You might also consider buying a strand of matching lights solely as a source to pilfer extra bulbs.

Experts have an additional piece of advice here: If you have one or two burned-out bulbs on an otherwise functioning strand, don’t ignore them. The remaining bulbs could be contending with excess voltage that shorten their lifespan.

If only half the strand is out.

If half a strand is working and the other half is not, you probably have a loose or broken bulb. Start with the first unlit bulb and work your way down, wiggling them to check for looseness. If it flickers, that’s your cue to replace it. If not, you have the more tedious job of going down the row of unlit bulbs, one at a time, and swapping them for a known, good bulb until you find the culprit. You’ll know it when the strand lights back up.

If the whole strand is out.

If you find yourself with a dead string of lights, a number of things could be wrong. First, try plugging it into another electrical outlet. If that’s not the problem, it could be a loose or broken bulb. See the previous section for instructions.

The problem may also be a bad fuse. Most string lights have two tiny fuses inside the plug. Typically, a box of lights is also packaged with a replacement fuse or two.

To replace a fuse, take a small set of pliers or flathead screwdriver and slide open the cover. Then gently pop out the fuse and replace it with new ones. Slide the cover closed and plug it in. If you have only one extra fuse, try replacing them one at a time. If you need more than one, replacements are typically available at most hardware and craft stores during the holidays.

Hello Today almost all of my widgets stopped working, one still works, the turn of all lights. The ones for single bulbs won’t work and if I create a new one that does not work either. Anyone else having this problem? I’m running Android 12 on a Samsung Galaxy S21 and v.4.13.0 of the official Hue app.

If you can’t see your room, scroll down to the ‘Custom Room’ button and add the room of your choice, then assign lights.

Now try out some commands on the Google Home speaker and see if the hue lights in all rooms are working.

This error occurs whenever the signal between your hue lights and the Google Home device is weak. Perhaps the devices are more than 15 feet apart.

Now you can control the lights, set timers and schedules, and change colors with your smartphone or your voice if you have a smart assistant—no clapping required.

If you want to make your home just a little smarter, smart bulbs are a great place to start. Most options are relatively cheap, and they’re easy to install. Plus, there are no cameras or door locks for someone to hack into, and no wiring to mess with. If you decide to smarten up your home even more, most of these brands have a list of other products too.

Do you want to try voice controls? Consider getting a smart speaker or smart display. But you can always use the bulb's app.

A Word on Smart Light Bulbs

You'll typically see smart bulbs categorized by full color, dimmable white, and tunable white (bright white and warm tone options). All the color bulbs we tried have multiple white and warm settings, so if there's any chance you might want to try out colors occasionally, we recommend going with them. If you're buying lighting for an office or other professional space where pink or blue shades would be frowned upon (or you just want the most affordable bulb), we have basic options listed below.

Setting up a smart bulb is simple. Usually, you only need to replace a bulb and download an app. Make sure to leave the power switch or the wall switch turned on so the corresponding app can control the power instead. You might have to occasionally reconnect the bulb to the app. Most bulbs can be set up separately, but some companies require you to connect a hub to your router. It's not the worst thing, but it can be a nuisance.

Note: You might run into issues using smart bulbs with dimmer switches. Also, the lights we recommend below are not meant to be used outdoors.

Best Smart Bulb

It was hard to pick a favorite because most smart bulbs are so similar, but this was the easiest bulb I've ever set up; it took less than a minute in the Cync app from start to finish. Controlling the bulb is easy, as the app streamlines everything from switching through bold colors and spectrums of white to turning it on and off. You can even set schedules through Scenes. Cync's Direct Connect line of products pairs easily with most voice assistants (not Siri, though!) and you can control them when you aren't home, without needing a smart plug or hub. You can also get a two-pack of bulbs for around $24.

Cync is formerly C by GE, so you may still find products under the latter name. All of those products, aside from the Sol lamp, will continue to work through the new app and get updates as usual.

Nearly Perfect Runner-Up

I'm a big Nooie fan. The Aurora offers a range of nice hues, with preset themes and the ability to make your own. Its white spectrum could be larger and brighter, but it's enough to satisfy most people's needs. It has regular on/off scheduling, as well as wake-up and bedtime schedules that can dim or brighten the bulb. It's also designed to not overheat, thanks to "special cooling materials," according to Nooie's website. I touched the bulb after it had been on for a while—no burned fingers here.

Amazon reviews from around 2019 for both the bulb and the plug (which I also like) note issues with the app. It has been updated since then, and I had no problems pairing or controlling either device. Nooie says app permissions mentioned in reviews have also been tweaked, and the app no longer requires permission to make calls. (The company says the requirement was there to determine the country the device was in for geo-specific services.) However, this option is a bit more expensive per bulb than the Cync, and it's harder to find from popular stores like Target.

Best Smart Bulb Kit

It's only natural to see furniture giant Ikea wade into the smart home market. Its Tradfri smart bulb kit is an affordable and easy way to swap the lights in your home. Plus, it includes something you won't find with most of the competition: a remote. Controlling light bulbs from your phone has its perks, but a remote gives you more flexibility. It's small, can turn the bulb on and off, and controls colors and brightness.

To control these lights with your phone, the kit includes a separate hub (or "gateway," as Ikea calls it). It's not as convenient, but it does allow you to connect other optional gizmos to the bulb, like a wireless dimmer or a wireless motion sensor. The kit itself comes with two E26 LEDs, the remote, and the gateway. We've linked to the white-spectrum bulbs below, but you can find color bulbs too. If you can visit an Ikea in person, you'll likely find options that aren't always available for delivery, like pretty vintage-style bulbs.

An Upgrade Kit

The Philips kit is more expensive than the Ikea one, but it's available at a variety of retailers and is compatible with most assistants. It comes with three or four bulbs and a Hue Bridge hub that lets you connect the bulbs to your phone or voice assistant. You can choose many colors and brightness levels, as well as preset scenes to set the mood (or you can make your own). The app includes helpful how-to videos that explain the bulb's extra functions, like using one as a timer (it blinks!).

The hub lets you connect older Philips bulbs as well as other first- or third-party accessories, like the outdoor motion sensor. The three-pack now comes with a smart button that we haven't tried, but it seems similar to Ikea's remote. WIRED contributing writer Boone Ashworth says he's had issues connecting some of the bulbs, but I haven't run into any problems. Go with this if you want to use one system for all your smart home devices.

The Philips Hue line is getting a few new products today, the most popular of which is likely to be a new bulb that’s much brighter than typical Hue lights. The new bulb only comes in white — it doesn’t do any fancy color temperature adjustments — but it offers light equivalent to a 100W bulb, whereas the standard white Hue bulb is only a 60W equivalent. Brightness has been a limitation of Hue bulbs, so this could help more people find what they want out of the smart lighting system.

There’s one other key difference to these new bulbs: they come in the slightly larger A21 lightbulb shape, rather than the standard A19 lightbulb shape. For many uses, that likely won’t be a huge issue, but it could be a problem on lamps or fixtures where a normal A19 bulb is already close to the edge of the unit. The new A21 bulbs won’t replace the existing A19 Hue bulbs, but will be sold alongside them. The A21 white bulbs will be available starting in July for $20 each; white A19 bulbs sell for around $15 each. Like the latest A19 bulbs, the A21 bulbs also include Bluetooth support.

Two other products in the Hue lineup are getting upgrades. There’s a new version of the multicolored Hue Lightstrip, called the Hue Lightstrip Plus, which adds Bluetooth so that it can be controlled without a Hue hub. The new model can also be trimmed to size, and the extra pieces can be reattached later with included connectors. There’s also an updated Hue Bloom table lamp that’s supposed to have richer colors and a brighter output. The Lightstrip Plus goes on sale at Target this week for $80. The Bloom lamp launches in late July for $70.

The Philips Hue line, which is made by Signify, has for years been one of the best options for smart home lighting. The line has steadily improved and expanded over the years, as color quality got richer and more options were added. One of the most significant updates has been the addition of Bluetooth to most products in the lineup. Previously, you needed to purchase a small $60 hub, called the Hue Bridge, to communicate with the lights. Now, you can buy the lights and start using them right away over Bluetooth. There are some limitations without the hub — like not being able to control lights from outside your home — but it makes it easier to buy into the product line.

For example, Philips, manufacturer of the wildly popular Hue smart light bulb, had a flaw discovered by a third-party researcher. So what happened? Essentially, hackers could take control of a Philips Hue light bulb and install malicious firmware. They could then change your bulb’s brightness and color from anywhere in the world. There was little you could do to stop it, and it took a few months for Philips to correct the problem. Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon scenario, and it very well could get worse as smart home products continue to grow in popularity.

Smart Home Cameras Are Extra Vulnerable

Smart home cameras have exploded in popularity and for good reason. This product lineup is an inexpensive way to feel safer in your home – all without spending a fortune. The flip side is that smart home cameras are often the main target for hackers. We have heard all too many stories in the news over the past couple years of baby monitors getting hacked and scaring the who-knows-what out of parents. Often times these cameras are activated without parents ever knowing, only to discover it when someone just starts talking.

So what can parents do? Choosing strong passwords and enabling two-factor authentication is a good place to start. Doing research is especially critical – know exactly what you are purchasing and search online to be sure the company isn’t the source of previous hacks or software flaws.

Outdated Software Can Leave You Exposed

That goes either for the companies that manufacture these products or the users who choose to ignore or are not notified an update exists. Updating software can patch holes that can leave user data exposed and/or allow a hacker to take control. If the product itself doesn’t have an app or another method to quickly check for software, head to its website to look for more info. This is a simple and easy method to protect yourself and one that requires zero cost for smart home product owners around the world.

So How Do You Stay Safe?

It helps to know right from the start that staying safe from security problems is not a one-step answer. There are a multitude of things you can do to stay safe. As mentioned previously, make sure you have a strong password. This password should have nothing to do with your friends, family, kids, birthday or anything else that can easily be guessed. Alongside a strong password, enable two-step authentication which can make it extremely difficult for a hacker to gain access to your smart home accounts.

When you are installing devices, keep an eye out for the permissions of each product or service request. Checking the privacy settings can help you see exactly what information is being shared and help you limit those data transfers. It might also help to use a separate, unrelated email with all of your smart home products. Of course, the best way to stay protected is to simply do your research. Know which products have a history of security troubles and which ones have been meticulously tested by third-party researchers and are said to be well-protected.

Do not use the original router login credentials and rename the network to something of your own choosing. These tips might seem obvious, but you would be surprised how many people do not act on them.

There you have it. For all of the smart home product benefits, they can also make for a nightmare if mistreated. The good news is that you can take proactive action to make sure you are protected. Every step you take is one less chance hackers will choose you as their next target.

Signify has just announced two new Philips Hue smart lighting products, plus two tweaks to existing products. The new Amarant linear spotlight can brighten walls outdoors for a bit of contrast, but far more interesting for most folks is the Philips Hue wall switch module, which fixes one of the longest-standing issues with smart lighting: A smart light in a dumb switched receptacle.

In the beforetimes — as all eras before the Philips Hue wall switch module will now be known — if someone flipped off the switch that controlled your smart lighting, that was curtains. You’d actually have to get up, walk all the way over to it, and flip the switch back on for it to work again, lamenting every time-consuming step on your way there and back. Thankfully, that epoch is at an end.

Though the new Philips Hue wall switch module won’t make dumb lights into smart lights, it will make your switch into a smart control itself, which can trigger scenes remotely, and which remote commands can revert. That means the switch it’s wired into can control your lights without interfering with Assistant- or app-based controls. Or, more anecdotally, you can turn the lights back on from the sofa after your Uncle Kevin turns them off accidentally for the thousandth time after you’ve very clearly explained that that switch can’t be turned off because of your fancy lights. (This really isn’t very complicated, Kevin, just don’t touch that one switch.)

The Philips Hue wall switch module is battery powered, courtesy of a coin cell battery, and though it’s rated to last at least five years on a charge, you’ll be taking that switch apart again to replace it once it does die. It’s not a deal-breaker, but it is something to plan around, especially if you aren’t comfortable installing or maintaining something like this yourself — though we can’t imagine it’s too hard to do.

It will be available this summer for those of us in North America and a little earlier in the spring for folks in Europe. Prices vary by market, but we can expect to pay $40 for one or $70 for two here in the US.

If your television suffers from a distorted picture, weird colors, or the dreaded "soap opera effect," these simple fixes can help improve your picture.

If you haven’t dived into your TV’s menu system, you might be dealing with annoying quirks you didn’t even know you could fix. The default settings on many TVs don’t always offer the best picture, especially when you consider that each video source (cable box, media streamer, Blu-ray player, game system) likely has its own ideal settings that apply. Here are easy fixes to four common picture problems.

Fixing a Squashed, Stretched, or Cropped Picture

Have you ever watched TV and thought that the picture looked a little off? Maybe the people look squashed, or maybe parts of the picture look like they’re disappearing past the edge of the screen. This is a common problem with many TVs, and it’s one you can easily fix.

Picture size is a setting that has many different names on different TVs, but they all do the same thing: Affect how the video signal the TV receives is displayed geometrically on the screen. Ideally, the picture is mapped pixel-to-pixel on the TV, but that isn’t always the case. Sometimes the aspect ratio is off, forcing the picture to be stretched or cropped. Other times the TV trims the edge of the picture to fit broadcast formats. When this happens, you need to fix the picture size.

The Picture Size setting can be also referred to as Zoom, Wide, Aspect Ratio, or even simply just Picture. Check your TV’s settings menu for any item that sounds like one of those terms. If you aren’t sure if it’s the right selection, check what options are available, and look for Zoom, Stretch, Wide, or 16:9. Those options indicate you’re looking at the right setting. They also mean you’re looking at the wrong options to get the best picture on your TV.

For any modern game system, media hub, cable box, or computer that outputs at 1080p (1,920 by 1,080) or 4K (3,840 by 2,160), you want your TV to display the signal pixel-for-pixel if it’s an option. In the Picture Size menu, select Direct or Just-Fit. This will tell your TV to show off any video it gets from your connected device as it receives it, without stretching or cropping anything. This simple option can fix any weird distortion you see when you’re watching TV.

If the pixel-for-pixel mode doesn’t help (especially if you use an older, pre-HD video source connected through composite or component inputs), try the 16:9 and 4:3 settings. Older game systems and DVD players output at a 4:3 aspect ratio, and they look better pillarboxed on modern TVs with black bars on either side to keep that ratio.

If you connect a computer or some other devices to your TV, you might experience another problem: overzealous overscan. Before digital TV was broadcast, TV signals transmitted more of the picture than was intended to be shown on the TV. This extra frame of picture is known as overscan, and TVs are designed to trim it off. Some TVs still cut off overscan, and when they connect a video source they don’t quite know how to handle, that’s what they do. We’ve seen this often on Samsung TVs when connecting PCs to them. If changing the picture size leaves you with a picture that appears to be cut off at the edges, you’re dealing with overscan. Look through your TV’s menu system for a separate option called Overscan. It will likely be near the Picture Size option in the menu, but it could appear anywhere (including the Advanced Settings). Set Overscan to Off or Disable and you’ll finally see the full picture.

How to Turn Off the Soap Opera Effect

The “soap opera effect” is a common picture grievance that occurs when movement on the screen looks unnatural. It’s often caused by the TV simulating 60 or more frames per second (fps) when the source video doesn’t provide it. Most movies and shows are displayed at 24 or 30 frames per second. 24fps is the standard frame rate for film, while 30fps is the standard frame rate for produced television.

Many TVs have a refresh rate of 120Hz, or can display up to 120 frames per second. They also often offer image processing features that can make movement appear smoother to match that frame rate, or even simulate higher frame rates.

These features are effective at making a 24 or 30fps video look very smooth. The problem is they make the video look too smooth. It appears unnatural and jarring, resulting in the soap opera effect. They can be nice when you’re watching sports or playing video games, but for most movies and TV shows, they just make everything appear weird, like you’re standing behind the camera and seeing exactly what it sees.

The solution is simple: Turn off motion smoothing. That’s it. Just because a TV has a 120Hz refresh rate doesn’t mean you need to use it. Disabling motion smoothing features will stop the soap opera effect. Movies will look like movies and TV shows will look like TV shows again.

Putting your TV in the Theater or Cinema mode might turn off those features automatically, but if it doesn’t you’ll need to disable them manually. What to Do If the Picture Is Too Dark

Have you ever noticed the picture on your TV looking brighter or dimmer depending on the time of day? That’s likely due to a power-saving feature that’s the bane of cinephiles everywhere: the light sensor. Many TVs have ambient light sensors that adjust the brightness of the picture on the fly, based on whether the room it’s in is bright or dark. It sounds handy on paper, but it means you can’t ensure consistent control of the TV’s brightness yourself.

You can keep direct control over your TV’s brightness by turning off the ambient light sensor. This setting can be hidden in several different areas of your TV’s menu system, depending on the interface. For Android TVs, it’s a setting found in the Backlight menu of the Picture settings. On LG TVs with webOS, it’s in the Energy Saving menu. Disabling any setting that says Ambient Light or Intelligent Sensor will turn off the feature. You might also have to switch picture modes to make sure it stays off—and steer clear of any Automatic Power Saving (APS) picture mode, since it will also automatically adjust your TV’s brightness and often err on the side of dimmer.

For more precise control, you can also disable any energy-saving features on your TV. These don’t necessarily use light sensors, but they do tweak the TV’s backlight to save electricity. Look for any Power Saving, Energy Saving, or Eco setting and set it to Low or Off. Then you can adjust the TV’s backlight manually to suit your tastes. Of course, this will result in your TV using more power unless you prefer looking at a dim picture; depending on the the type of the panel, and the picture mode, a 65-inch TV can consumer anywhere from 80 to 300 watts under normal viewing conditions.

You depend on your lights to provide you with solid, uninterrupted illumination. So, a flickering light bulb can be annoying, distracting, and even unsafe. Once you trace the cause of the flickering bulb, many solutions are low-cost and simple to implement.

What Causes Light Bulbs to Flicker

Loose Bulb

With flickering light bulbs, the obvious first step is to retighten the bulb. Over time, even the best light bulbs can slowly unscrew or give way somehow, especially bulbs near areas of vibration. Ceiling light bulbs on first-floor ceilings can be shaken due to foot traffic on the floor above.

Often, the bulb itself does not unscrew—instead, the hot tab in the base of the socket has given way slightly and is not fully making contact, which causes the light to flicker.

Loose Outlet

Power outlets that service table or floor lamps can cause the bulb to flicker. While the bulb itself may be in good condition, the power source wavers. The cause of this is usually an outlet whose internal metal contact blades have become worn or a loose connection where the wire connects to the outlet.

Faulty Light Fixture

Because they have no moving parts, light fixtures can last for decades. But eventually, time can take a toll on light fixtures as the center hot tab loses tension. Ceiling leaks, foundation shifts, and constant temperature spikes in the attic, too, can affect light fixtures. Also, some light fixtures simply are faulty from the start.

Faulty Dimmer Switch

Dimmer switches are especially prone to causing flickering light bulbs because flickering is how dimmers work. Turning a dimmer up or down isn’t like gradually turning a water tap on or off. Instead, a dimmer changes the voltage waveform before it enters the light. It’s a flicker that passes so quickly that the eye cannot discern it. Applying more voltage to a dimmer switch than it was designed for is a major cause of dimmer switch failure. Dimmer switches can also fail when a user is trying to dim a CFL or LED bulb that is not intended to dim or when a dimmer made for use with incandescent bulbs is used on a non-incandescent bulb.

Mismatched Dimmer Switch

LED lights are a great advantage to homeowners over earlier incandescents and CFLs due to their bright light, long service life, and cool operation. But when an LED bulb is matched up with a dimmer switch originally designed for use with incandescents, flickering can occur.

Loose Wiring

Cables lead from the electric service panel (circuit breakers) to the light switch, and along the way anything can go wrong. Cables located in walls are generally not to blame. As long as they were installed with staples or routed through holes in the studs, these electric cables tend to stay in place.

The problem tends to center around connection points where individual wires within the cable sheathing branch out and are attached to devices or in junction boxes.

Power Demands

Lights often are on dedicated light circuits—electric circuits that have nothing besides lights on them. But when lights share circuits with other devices, lights can often bear the brunt of the larger devices' power demands.

Dishwashers, air conditioners, ceiling fans, bathroom exhaust fans, and televisions are just a few of the appliances that can interfere with the operation of a light that happens to share the circuit. When a very large draw—such as an A/C unit or a furnace—begins, any light on the circuit can flicker or lose brightness.

Troubleshooting a Flickering Light Bulb

  • Loose Bulb: Loose light bulbs are fixed by first turning the bulb slightly counter-clockwise, then turning it clockwise again until tight.
  • Loose Outlet: Outlets are solid-state devices and should not be repaired. Replace the outlet.
  • Faulty Light Fixture: With ceiling lights, the solution is usually not to repair the light fixture but to purchase and install a new fixture. Floor and table lamps can be rewired.
  • Faulty Dimmer: Faulty or damaged dimmer switches should be removed and discarded, then replaced with new dimmer switches.
  • Mismatched Dimmer: Remove the old dimmer switch. Purchase a dimmer switch that is rated for LED lights and install it.
  • Loose Wiring: Loose wiring can be fixed by methodically testing every connection point. If the connection is solid, it can stay. If it is loose, it can be re-connected.
  • Power Demands: Removing the light fixture from the overloaded circuit and creating a fresh circuit is often the cure to this problem.

How to Diagnose a Flickering Light Bulb

  1. Diagnose the cause of a flickering light bulb by starting with the easiest repairs and working toward the more difficult repairs. No matter what else you do, you’ll always want to start by tightening the light bulb.
  2. Check the connection for floor and table lamps. The plug should stay firmly in place with a gentle tug.
  3. With faulty light fixtures, remove the light cover and lightly tap the side of the fixture with your knuckles. The light should not flicker. If it does, the fixture needs to be replaced.
  4. Faulty dimmer switches can be tested by temporarily replacing the dimmer switch with a simple single-pole non-dimmable light switch. If the light works fine with this switch, then the problem lies with the dimmer switch.
  5. Mismatched dimmer switches are difficult to identify by looking at the switch or even the metal housing. Find your switch online and check its specs for compatibility. If in doubt, replace the switch with a compatible one.
  6. Loose wiring is hard to diagnose. Sometimes, wiring is so loose at switches that vibration from your hand can cause the lights to flicker. Otherwise, you’ll need to hunt through the electrical boxes or have an electrician do this for you.
  7. Flickering bulbs caused by power demands announce themselves when the other, larger device turns on. If your lights flicker after the air conditioner or dishwasher turn on, that’s probably the cause.

The problem with smart bulbs like the Philips Hue series has always been—and will always be—dumb switches. The instant you turn the switch controlling a smart bulb to the off position, there is no way you’ll ever be able to control that bulb with an app, a digital assistant, or anything else until you flip the switch back on.

The Lutron Aurora fixes that issue in an ingenious way—but with some significant caveats. First, it’s compatible only with Philips Hue smart bulbs. So, if you’re lighting your rooms with LIFX, TP-Link, C by GE, or any other brand of smart bulb, the Aurora will do nothing for you. Second, if the switch on the wall that’s controlling your Philips Hue bulbs is anything other than an old-school toggle switch, the Aurora will do nothing for you (unless you’re willing to replace the switch and perhaps tolerate an ugly installation—see below).

The Aurora consists of two components that should take you less than five minutes to install. The first bit is a mounting base that you place over your toggle switch (with the switch in the on position) and then tighten down with a small Phillips screwdriver. Once this mechanical clamp is in place, it becomes physically impossible to turn the switch off. The second element is a rotary knob that snaps on to the base. The rotary knob contains a CR2032 battery (which Lutron says should last two to three years) and a Zigbee radio that talks to your Philips Hue bulbs via the Hue Bridge (or directly to Hue bulbs if you don’t have a Bridge). Once you’ve paired the Aurora with your Hue bulbs, pressing the rotary knob will turn the paired Hue lights on and off, and rotating it will dim or brighten the bulbs.

The Aurora consists of two pieces: The gray plastic device prevents the toggle switch from being turned off. The white rotating knob snaps onto the gray piece. Push it to turn the bulb on and off, or rotate to dim it.

You’ll configure the Aurora using the Friends of Hue switches menu in the Philips Hue app, where you can assign the switch to a room (provided you created rooms and assigned lights to them elsewhere in the app). You can also choose any Hue lighting scene and assign that to the Aurora, so that the Hue bulbs default to that scene when you press the switch. If you change the lighting scene by another means—using an Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant voice command, for instance—the bulbs will retain that scene value after you turn the bulbs off and turn them on again using the Aurora.

If you want to change anything other than brightness (change colors or color temperatures, for example), you’ll need to either use the Hue app or issue a voice command to a compatible smart speaker.

Lutron says a single Aurora can control up to 50 Philips Hue smart bulbs connected to a Philips Hue Bridge, or up to Hue 12 bulbs directly if you don’t have a Bridge. It’s not even necessary for those bulbs to be on the same electrical circuit as the switch you’re installing it on, provided power is available to all those bulbs (i.e., any switches controlling them must be in the on position). For bulbs on multi-way circuits (e.g., a three-way circuit where switches at opposite sides of the room both control power to the bulbs), you can either install an Aurora at each location, or use some other means to ensure power to the socket(s) hosting the bulbs is not interrupted.

You’ll need this type of toggle switch (single- or multi-pole) to install a Lutron Aurora smart bulb dimmer.

The Aurora is not compatible with other Lutron lighting controls, including the Lutron Caséta product line, but that hardly matters. When you’re not using the physical controls on the Aurora itself, you’ll most likely control the Hue bulbs with voice commands or the Philips Hue app anyway.

The Aurora is super-easy to install, and it even has a color LED that will help you troubleshoot if you run into any issues. Since all the switches in my home are of the rocker variety, Lutron helpfully sent a toggle switch along with the Aurora, so I could replace the one controlling the Philips Hue bulbs I wanted to test it with (these were in three ceiling cans in my home theater).

That’s a good workaround if the switch in question exists in isolation, or if the other switches in the same junction box are also toggle switches. Of the 24 switch locations in my home, only two are single-gang boxes and none are toggle style. The switch controlling the Hue lights in my home theater, for example, is in a box with three other lighting controls, and you can’t mix toggle switches with rocker switches and expect to find a cover-plate that will accommodate such an unconventional arrangement.

I Just got the new HomeKit enabled Philips hue bridge and when I try to set up Siri voice control it gives me a message that says ” unfortunately your HomeKit enabled bridge was not found. Make sure the bridge is powered on and correctly connected to your router.” I have searched the Internet for this and can’t find an answer. I bought the starter pack directly from apple

I had this same problem just now. I was following the directions to transfer my old bridge info to the new one. Everything looked (and worked) fine, until I tried to pair my iOS device for Siri usage.

I fixed it by going to Settings > Privacy > HomeKit > Reset HomeKit Configuration. . After the reset, you have to use your camera to link your bridge again using the HomeKit id, but after that Siri was working.

I had the same problem, and it took a while to figure out a fix. Looks like the Hue app creates a HomeKit entity called Home, and if it is present, the app goes into some undefined state and thinks you don’t have a HomeKit enabled hub. This is what I did:

– kill the Hue app on iPhone

– go to settings -> HomeKit

– click Edit and delete the home named “Home”

– go to “Siri voice control”

Now you should be able to pair the Hub.

When I reset the homekit configuration, nothing changes. I never get an option to scan my homekit key with my camera. I never had this option when I opened the app the very first time

Try this sequence:

  1. Settings > Privacy > HomeKit > Reset HomeKit Configuration.
  2. Restart iPhone (hold down the power button, slide to power down)
  3. After restarting, go to Hue app and ‘Siri Voice Control’
  4. You should have a button to ‘Pair Bridge’, which then prompts you to scan the Accessory key

Hint (if you can get this far): the Hue app is really bad for HomeKit-related stuff. Download the Elgato Eve app (free) to customize the rest of your house (allows you to set up Rooms and Scenes).

Do you own an AirPort Express access point?

I had to change the “Router Mode” (AirPort Utility -> Network -> Router Mode) from “DHCP and NAT” to “Off (Bidge Mode)”.

After that my Bridge was found.

Make sure you have your Hue Bridge updated. There was a problem with older versions of the firmware but Phillips resolved it.

I have the same issue as Adam There is no way to reset home kit on the new ios 10. The bridge is connected directly to the router that my iPhone is connected too and it does not show. I have downloaded other apps like el gato and neither that or home can see all of my lights. the whole thing is render useless any other help please?
