• Computer’s age:  2 years (GPU is about 3 years old, PSU is 2,5 years old), Monitors are about 3 years old as well, but they work flawlessly except for this one problem.

PSU:  Corsair CX650M

OS:  Windows 10 64 bit

Motherboard:  MSI B450 TOMAHAWK

CPU:  AMD Ryzen 5 2600x

RAM:  16gb (2×8 3200MHz)

GPU:  NVIDIA GeForce 1060 6GB Gainward

Monitors:  I don’t know their exact names, but this is what I found when I went into Advanced display settings:  Display 1:  VX228,  Display 2:  ASUS VP228. They are also both  1920×1080, 60Hz

•  Description of the problem:  I don’t know when exactly thís has started happening as it has been happening for quite some time, but I only decided to get support now. Basically, I have two monitors and what sometimes happens is that when I ALT-TAB my game to look at something else on my second monitor, then from time to time my monitors kind of “freeze” (not really freeze, but I can’t interact with anything). I can’t click on anything. I can still operate via keyboard and I can also ALT-TAB the game back up and the game is also the only thing that’s responsive because all the other programs are also frozen. It doesn’t happen every time I ALT-TAB a game and it also doesn’t seem to happen with every game.

This has happened to me with games like:  Vietcong 1 (Fullscreen), Payday 2 (Fullscreen), Phasmophobia (Borderless), Arma 3 (Borderless)

At first, I thought that the problem was mainly with Fullscreen games since it has happened to me with Phasmophobia on borderless, but very rarely. But then I remembered Arma 3 that I also play on borderless and there it happened almost every time I played it. The other two games I play on fullscreen and with those, the freezing happens quite frequently.

What can solve the problem temporarily:  This problem sometimes fixes itself temporarily.  Very rarely it fixes itself when I simply ALT-TAB the game up and down a few times. The most common fix that works is when I restart the game, the displays usually start responding immediately after turning off the game, however, sometimes it takes up to 5 minutes before the displays start being responsive. And sometimes I simply have to restart my computer since displays just stay unresponsive even after 10+ minutes of waiting. A restart fixes this problem every time, but I would prefer a solution that would be more permanent as I ALT-TAB my games really often.

Everything on my PC works just normal but when i have any steam game open and alt tab everything stutters like hell (mouse cursor/videos/etc everything lag) Games still work perfect fullscreen/minimized

I have no idea what is wrong. Task manager seems just normal. If have any non steam game open and alt tab its just normal.

specs:
windows 8.1 pro (latest update)
GTX 980 (latest driver)
i7-4790K
16GB ram
ssd/hdd (enough space on both)
2x monitors 1440p g-sync and 1080p

I bought my PC late 2015 and everything has worked perfectly until now. Just now few weeks ago i had this weird lag when i have steam games open on background (literally any ♥♥♥♥ game its still stutters)

My windows is 64bit
done virus scans

My pc worked normally with any game alt tabbed before

it is nor ram issue. Any non steam game alt tabbed works normal. In task manager everything seems normal.

After looking through the above forum and a few more, the general consensus is that it’s caused by a memory leak of the game, and the only way to fix it is to play windowed/borderless

I’ve also read that some people managed to fix this by disabling either or both the Steam overlay and Discord overlay.

I avoid the discord overlay because of the amount of problems it causes.

Have you also tried disabling the full screen optimisations in the properties of effected games?

1. There is no problems when i alt tab from bnet games (or any other non steam game)
2. Same stutter with all steam games. Even those random achievement games make stutter when on background and not just high end game issue
3. There is no difference if game is full screen or minimized
4. Stutter even when steam overlay is off
5. Discord is on background but no overlay on it
6. This started few weeks ago and i have no clue what is the problem. never had this problem before

30 seconds and couldn’t fix it. Had to kill and restart.

Edit:
I found the solution to this: Disable a feature called “Focus Assist” in Windows 10 (you can find it by searching for “Focus Assist” in the start menu). Set “When I’m playing a game” to “Off”. Voila, no more lag / freezing.

Your problem is a common one with fullscreen games.

For stability, if you need to alt+tab you should run games in Borderless Window mode, then set the resolution to match your monitor native resolution.

Has been this way for years for most games

Also Dandy, good feedback/bug reports ;o)

Also Dandy, good feedback/bug reports ;o) I know this isn’t the first game with this problem, but there are also games that handle it perfectly fine. I don’t think the fact that “a bunch of other games are broken, too” is terribly relevant. Borderless also doesn’t fix this problem (though it may make it slightly better, it still has a very long delay). I’m fairly certain this is something that can be accounted for and optimized.

Thanks, appreciate your feedback as well. Hope you’re enjoying the game!

You may be right Dandy but from a streaming perspective, I have found often games struggle alt+tabbing when you run them as exclusive fullscreen and also due to the way that Windows DWM works as of Vista onwards (I think) the delay can be due to running exclusive fullscreen and alt+tabbing just doesnt work seamlessly in that usage case.

If ever the need to alt+tab arises it is always best to run games using fullscreenborderless instead of exclusive fullscreen.

As a speculation maybe the way exclusive works with OpenGL is different to DirectX and maybe what you speak of is an issue that can be solved by developer but I don’t have the knowledge to say outright, I can only speculate as I havent got my head around using DirectX and OpenGL in gamedev yet.

I am not enjoying yet but will be soon enough this week ;o)
Hope you are.

Why pc games struggle with alttab and how to fix it

Many gamers complained that ALT+TAB became very slow on their computers after installing the Windows 10 April Update. This is a very annoying problem as it can severely limit your gaming experience — sometimes, it can take up to 10-15 seconds to get back to the game. Fortunately, one resourceful gamer found a solution and shared it with the Reddit gaming community.

How to fix slow Alt+Tab in Windows 10

Long story short, here are the steps to follow:

  1. Go to the Settings page > select System > go to Focus Assist (on the left hand panel)
  2. Go to Automatic Rules > select Set “When I’m playing a game” to off

As you can see, this is a very simple solution that works in most cases. However, if the issue persists, try updating your GPU drivers. You can download the latest graphics drivers from your GPU manufacturer’s official website:

Speaking of the issues that gamers encountered after installing the latest Windows 10 version, it is worth mentioning that many couldn’t use in-game voice chat features. As we showed you in a previous post, your games can’t access your microphone due to Windows 10’s privacy restrictions. Namely, Microsoft decided to automatically block third-party app and game access to your microphone and camera due to privacy concerns.

Of course, you can always allow your games to access your microphone by going to Settings > Privacy > Microphone and checking the option ‘Allow apps to access your microphone’.

Has the Windows 10 April Update affected your gaming experience in a negative way? Let us know in the comments below.

” I just installed win 10 on my laptop too see if this problem exists there. it doesnt :D”

Does this issue happen in Windows 10 Technical Preview or not?

If you don’t start the game, and press alt-tab to switch between other applications, does it have a delay?

Meanwhile, update the graphic driver to make the game more smoothly.

Or it’s game ot hardware related, see some explanation in the link below

Hi,

” I just installed win 10 on my laptop too see if this problem exists there. it doesnt :D”

Does this issue happen in Windows 10 Technical Preview or not?

If you don’t start the game, and press alt-tab to switch between other applications, does it have a delay?

Meanwhile, update the graphic driver to make the game more smoothly.

Thank you for the quick response!

This Issue happens on my Desktop PC which has Win 10 Technical Preview installed.

On my laptop with Win 10 Technical Preview it just works fine- i can switch with alt tab to the desktop within 1 second.

If i switch between other applications it has also a 4 -5 seconds delay. (on Desktop PC – Laptop is instant)

Its not game specific. I tried various games. ( WoW, Starcraft, Battlefield, Half Life 2, CS:Go. )

– The same games on win 7 64 bit or win 8.1 64bit just worked fine with alt tabbing.

When i play the SAME games on my Laptop with Win 10 Technical Preview i can switch around with alt tab like an idiot. It hardly has an delay-max 1 sec.

The funny thing is that my laptop is also way weaker compared to my desktop in terms of hardware.

Graphics Driver is up to date – Geforce Experience

Greeting from Austria

Edit: I also completly deleted my hard drive and installed Win 10 Technical Preview new.

Why pc games struggle with alttab and how to fix it

Fortnite is a fun game that can be played both casually and competitively. The game attracts a huge variety of audiences as it is mainly a Battle Royale game that introduces players to the concept of crafting and building all while fighting a PVP environment.

How to Fix Fortnite Alt-Tab Freeze?

Alt-Tab is a really handy feature by Windows through which users can successfully minimize the current application on their screen. It is especially helpful when used in games, as they are mainly played on full screen. However, players have been complaining about Fortnite as it will freeze as soon as they try to Alt-Tab.

If you also notice your game freezing when pressing the shortcut keys, then we highly suggest that you keep on reading. Using this article, we will be giving you a number of ways on how you can effectively troubleshoot the issue. All of them are mentioned below:

  1. Check Your GPU Drivers

Having your game freeze as soon as you press ALT-TAB might be due to an outdated or buggy GPU driver that you have currently installed. To fix this, you will have to make sure that you have the latest version of the GPU drivers installed on your PC.

If you already have the latest version of drivers, try rolling back to an older version to see if it has any effect.

  1. Reinstall the Game

Chances are that your game might not be properly installed or have some sort of buggy file causing the whole game to freeze as soon as you minimize it. In such cases, it is always recommended that you try reinstalling your game.

What this will do is to help you make sure that all of the files of the game are downloaded again. Just be sure that your antivirus does not interfere with the download or installation procedure.

  1. Try Changing Video Settings

One of the last things you can try in order to fix the issue is to check the video or graphics settings of the game. It is possible that the reason why your game is freezing because of your hardware being overloaded.

If that is so, then you will have to start by lowering your graphic settings. Alternatively, we recommend you try swapping to full-screen mode, borderless window, as well as windowed mode.

The Bottom Line:

Does Fortnite freeze as soon as you press ALT-TAB on your keyboard? If so, then we have attached all the possible troubleshooting steps in order to resolve the issue. In case none of them seems to work, then your best bet would be to contact support for additional help!

This is a common issue with games in general; the best solution is to avoid using Alt+Tab/Windows key when in fullscreen or minimizing the game (e.g. maximize the window instead, or press F11 to exit fullscreen before switching):

MC-114553 Alt-tab while in fullscreen = crash (marked as fixed in 1.13 but comments indicate that it is not fixed)

MC-124778 Minecraft freezes when minimized / ALT-TAB / Switching Window Focus (some comments say that closing programs like Discord or installing Optifine fixes the issue while others say it happens regardless so it seems to be very dependent on system configuration)

TheMasterCaver’s World – my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

There may also be files named “hs_err_pid(some number)” in the .minecraft folder, which are JVM crash reports; otherwise, it sounds like the OS itself is intercepting the crash (e.g. “javaw.exe has stopped working” dialog) or it is simply not responding but you didn’t make it clear as to what is happening.

Either way, you may have to not use full screen when using Alt+Tab (use F11 to switch to windowed mode first) as this is a common issue with no known solutions in every case (some systems seem to have no problems while others crash; as mentioned before, certain programs are known to aggravate the issue).

We started to notice this last night (CEST where some players ahd the game INSTA crash when alt-tab. I did not have any issues with this at all.
Now a few hours later, the same happens for me. INSTA crash when alt-tabbing.

We all have different setups. (Im on a much older Windows 10 version than the other i have talked with)

It started happening to me some time on Thursday, I do not know exactly when. This issue occurs at any moment the game has gained focus and then loses it. Easiest to test by alt-tabbing, can also be tested by simply clicking on Desktop/Discord/other app on a second screen.

Listing a number of things I have tested and tried, all below listed activities had no positive results. Issue continued occurring nonetheless.

1. Running game in Fullscreen/Borderless/Windowed modes
2. Running Steam version / Uplay version separately (I have 1 account on Steam side, 2 accounts on Uplay side)
3. Running game with some/all/none Overlays disabled
4. Running game with V-sync off
5. Running game with fullscreen optimization disabled (.exe compatibility option)
6. Changing refresh rates on my displays (normally use 120hz main, 60hz secondary)
7. Disconnecting second display completely from PC
8. Verifying files on Steam/uPlay side.
9. Restarting PC. Restarting Steam/Uplay.
10. Fixing corrupted files on Windows side by using “sfc /scannow” command in CMD/PowerShell running it as administrator (corrupted files were found and fixed, no effect on game)
11. Tested other older/newer games on Steam side, no such issues there. Unfortunately I do not have another always online Uplay specific game currently installed.
12. Doing minor Windows updates
13. Doing major Windows feature update (2004)

I have checked for any kind of driver updates, but there was nothing that happened on 06.08.2020 except for Windows Defender malware database update, which occurs daily.

I also tried to check any available logs available to users, but the BREPORT logs are unreadable (no application to open them with) and the only information about the crash I could find in launcher_log in game files:

Multiple people are having this issue and more new people are starting to experience it within hours. Something is progressively braking the game for PC users.

Yo guys , I’ve been having this problem for ages and now it started to really get on my nerves.

Whenever I need to alt tab (due to a really stupid reason thanks to my parents) out of a game, everything is fine but when I alt tab back into the game, I come across a black screen and the only way to get out of by CTRL + ALT + DEL and reconnecting :(.
A thing that intrigues me is that sometimes when I do alt tab back into the game, it doesn’t have a black screen. but this is only after i have alt tabbed once out of the game then had to reconnect. I had to alt tab again and then when I just went back it worked. It was definitely strange.

My gfx card isn’t the best, just some integrated one.

Thanks in advance.

hmm, I’ll try word it better.

Ok, This has happened to me (and im sure others) quite a few times now.

Sometimes in games i press the ‘alt’ button and click somewhere to ping the map. But i also have a habit of pressing the ‘tab’ button very regularly throughout games to check stats and what items are being bought etc.

Sadly, when these 2 buttons are pressed at the same time. im taken out of the game and into another window. When i try to go back into the game all i see is a black screen which takes up most of the view – perhaps the game is trying to act as if its in windowed mode?

I dont think I can do anything at this point, as when i click on the blackness nothing happens, i try alt-tabbing back into it but nothing happens. I have no choice but to close the game, and when i do, instead of taking me back to the option ‘reconnect’, the whole thing is completely closed and i have to reopen, relogin. and even once i have, the reconnect button doesnt appear, so i now have the option to start a new game XD

So, I was wondering if there actually is a way to get back into the game after pressing ‘alt-tab’ or if there is a way for it to be fixed.

Why pc games struggle with alttab and how to fix it

Bringing Destiny to the PC was a pretty amazing feat, given that it’s one of the best technical shooters in years: marred by a company that is frequently in over their head when it comes to bugs and support. That includes this Destiny 2 on PC bug that can conflate alt-tabbing your game with a PVP exploit; landing you in the temporary jailhouse.

The bug was discovered by the community recently, which is known as the “time skew maxed/rutabaga error” debacle. Here’s the gist: if you alt-tab while playing Destiny 2 on PC, the game could think you’re cheating, and issue a temporary PVP ban. This hypothesis was directly backed up by community manager dmg04 on Twitter, who confirmed the “limited time PVP restrictions when hitting the error multiple times over a small amount of games.”

Dmg04 goes on to say that the error is triggered by alt-tabbing, as well as “[attempting] to change video settings when loading in or while playing a PVP match.” They also clarify that this could happen “more on PCs with older hardware,” and they recommend using an app on your phone to swap gear, or do it before you start matchmaking while you’re in orbit (read: in the main menu before triggering a PVP match).

Bungie is taking a little more time than usual to tackle known issues these past few years, notably without the backing of Activision and its subsidiaries, like High Moon (which worked on myriad Destiny content). All of this is related to the recent discovery and widespread use of the “min/max orb glitch” (related to the aforementioned video manipulation), which has also been directly addressed by dmg04, and is “targeting” a December deployment. In the meantime, you likely need to deal with the time skewed max error on PC.

You’re playing a game and you Alt+Tab to use another program, but there’s a problem. The Alt+Tab process may be extremely slow, the game may crash or freeze, or you may see graphical corruption.

How do I change my alt tab back to normal?

You can still use keyboard shortcuts to switch between tabs, even after changing this setting. Press Windows+Ctrl+Tab to switch to the next tab or Windows+Ctrl+Shift+Tab to switch to the previous tab.

How do I fix the alt tab glitch?

If you still want to uninstall the update, follow these steps: To uninstall updates, go to “Update & Security,” select “View update history,” and then “Uninstall updates.” Select the KB5004296 (July 2021 preview) or KB5005033 (August 2021) update from the Control Panel and click the uninstall button.

How do I alt tab without lag?

One thing you can try to improve alt-tabbing time is disabling Focus Assist: Go to Settings > System > Focus Assist and toggle the switch off. You can also set a time range for it to automatically be disabled. Hopefully this helps reduce your alt-tab lag!

Can I Alt-Tab without minimizing game?

Prevent Window Deactivation via Hotkey Click OK to apply the settings, then try out the key combination in your game. After you hear the sound effect, you should be able to Alt+Tab out of the game and the game will not minimize.

Why does alt tab take so long?

It’s more than normal that some programs/games take longer than others to ALT+TAB, as your making it go to the background processes and then focusing them again. The only way to ‘fix’ this is increasing your PC overall performance or closing non-used programs to make it focus it’s power on the games.

Why is my RL so laggy?

The main factor causing you to lag online is distance to server. A rule of thumb is, the longer the information has to travel, the higher the ping. While you can select server region preferences in-game, it won’t guarantee you a great connection game.

How do you stop Minecraft from Minimising?

  1. Press F8.
  2. Press F10.
  3. Press Fn + F11 and Minimize.
  4. Press the Windows key and go back to desktop.

How do I stop games from minimizing Windows 10 when Alt tab?

Follow the instructions below to get rid of the Windows 10 Game Mode feature:

  1. Press Windows key + I to open the Settings app.
  2. Choose Gaming.
  3. Open Game Mode from the left pane.
  4. Toggle ‘Use Game Mode’ off.

How To Fix Windows 10 Alt+Tab Lag Issue While Gaming

If you are a regular gamer on Windows 10, playing your favorite game in full-screen mode, then it’s reasonable to assume that you would want to jump into another running program every now and then using the Alt+Tab button combination.

However, as simple as this feature sounds, it seems to be causing people a lot of issues on the latest Windows 10 April 2018 Update.

Why pc games struggle with alttab and how to fix it

Let’s be honest with ourselves here; this problem isn’t uniquely related to the latest Windows 10 1803 update, which was seeded by Microsoft over the last few days. Windows users have been struggling with this feature for a long time but it appears to have been a lot better and more responsive and reliable recently. Until 1803 dropped, that is. Thankfully, where there is a problem there is genuinely someone who has overcome the issue and found solace at the other end, which, in this instance, means that we can fix the problem.

Let’s jump right in and take a look at the solution:

Step 1: Sometimes, when the steps to fix a specific problem are extremely simple and involve hardly any legwork, it’s the most satisfying. So, with that in mind, prepare yourself for immediate satisfaction. On your Windows 10 machine launch the Settings app (Windows Key + I) select System > Focus assist.

Step 2: Once you get there, make sure that you disable all of the features that are linked to it. The end result should be that all features within this section are entirely disabled/non-functional/not working.

Why pc games struggle with alttab and how to fix it

You should now be able to skip out of the Windows 10 configuration/settings menu and start going about your business as normal without any lag or slowness when it comes to using the Alt+Tab combination when gaming on the latest Windows 10 update. It should also mean that you don’t experience any horrible crashing or other issues which have generally been attributed to using this keyboard combination when leaving a gaming context.

Once you get over these niggles and issues which appear, you actually have a really great update from Microsoft as far as build 1803 goes. Stick with it, persevere, and enjoy all of the hard work that Microsoft has put into this build.

Problem: You are gaming/typing/using your computer and your foreground window in Windows loses focus. Origin game client may appear briefly in front of your window, then disappear.

TL/DR – in my instance, it was Star Wars Battlefront 2 (I even caught it once running Battlefront 2 (update maybe?) and it seized control of foreground 3-4 times in a row. I’ve uninstalled Star Wars Battleground 2 and the issue appears to be resolved for me. At least 10 hours of non-alt-tab-hell.

I have this annoying problem and saw the developers at EA were struggling with it. So I figured I’d take a look…

I collected a trace with WPRui.exe using the following check boxes:

    • First Level Triage
    • CPU
    • Desktop Composition Activity

I then let it record until the problem happened, and saved the recording. The resulting log was 10GB in size (I have 64GB of RAM installed so this was somewhat expected). WPA will not open the file however, I’ve been sitting at this for the last 2 hours:

Why pc games struggle with alttab and how to fix it

So I decided I’d try PerfView. PerfView is like WPA, but different. Way different. You can find it on Github naturally. On Git there are a lot of video and tutorial links, which I ignored with abandon and set off to explore.

First less on PerfView is, it by default won’t display any more than 20,000,000 events it seems. My trace was a tad, husky, shall we say, so I had to change the cmdline to “PerfView64.exe /SkipMSec:340000” which told it “Hey, open the trace, but don’t really load a lot of detail until you pass 340,000 ms of time.” My trace was about 470 seconds long, so this starts really watching around 340 seconds in give or take.

The first area of PerfView I went to was the Process List.

Why pc games struggle with alttab and how to fix it

This gave me a list first of all transient processes, then below a list of persistent processes in the trace. I searched for all Origin processes to get the PIDs I might need, and to see which ones died, what their exit codes were, which ones were persistent, etc.

Then I double-clicked on Events. This shows every event that happened in the time range of my view, but I knew what I was looking for. Two in fact. Win32k manages what window is in foreground (and a lot of other things). The specific two events I was looking for were:

Microsoft-Windows-Win32k/FocusedProcessChange and Microsoft-Windows-Win32k/FocusChange. These would tip me off when I left my explorer window temporarily by Origin preempting my UI. I found several of these.

So that’s a list of every time the foreground window in my UI changed. Next I looked for quick transition times. See the 470,010-471,736? This was the flicker. It was interesting because it seemed to ‘minimize’ but (and this is how I’ve always experienced this) still was foreground, until I took it back. One example of the behavior I had was the screen flickered while I was scrolling down a web page with my mouse wheel. After the flicker, I had to click the web page again to get the focus, so scrolling could continue. The problem also happened very close to the end of my trace (it’s occurrence being why I stopped the trace in the first place).

What is interesting here to me is that Origin 18076 was the normal Origin process. The 55028 was one of the transient ones. It appears to spawn a sub-process named Origin, to do an ad change/rotation? You’ll see what I mean when you see the command line:

tada! Look at the args for the origin.exe binary:

    + Process64 Origin (18076) Args: “origin2://game/launch/?offerIds=1035052&title=STAR%u0020WARS%u2122%u0020Battlefront%u2122%u0020II&authCode=&cmdParams=–reactivate”

It’s advertising the game, an offer for it, whatever. And it’s annoying as hell.

Origin/EA, please stop. (You can see Origin!? is calling user32!SetForegroundWindow, btw at the bottom).

When using Alt + Tab , I can’t seem to get back to Skyrim. When clicking its icon or Alt + Tab to get back, I just see an empty window. Windowed mode doesn’t allow me to use it in a Windowed (Fullscreen) manner as seen with other games, so that doesn’t seem to be an option either.

Is there any way to fix this behavior?

When you get to the empty window, Alt + Tab to the Skyrim window again. This will bring you back to the game.

Alternatively, you can use Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager, right click the Skyrim entry in the Applications tab, and select Bring to Front.

Try the Simple Borderless Window mod. It will make Alt-Tabbing almost instant, though may reduce your framerate. It’s similar to the mod mentioned by aearon but doesn’t require AutoHotKey to be installed.

Another option is this Borderless Windowed Fullscreen mod, but it’s going to lower your framerate.

I also get a black window with a border, but I’ve found the solution for it. I.e., Skyrim and Chrome running simultaneously.

    1. Activate Chrome
    2. Press Alt + Tab , choose Skyrim
    3. The Skyrim window will be black/blank
    4. Keep pressing Alt , and scroll to Chrome then back to Skyrim
    5. Release Alt
    6. Skyrim will be running fullscreen again

Here’s my updated AutoHotkey script. Run it once, it will set the game fullscreen windowed shortly after it is launched.

Don’t ask me about the loop, I just pieced together parts of various AutoHotkey scripts that worked. The one I used previously worked with a keyboard shortcut and caused problems in Windows. This one should only ever touch the Skyrim window.

The game should first be set to windowed mode, and full desktop dimensions by editing SkyrimPrefs.ini located in

PS: When you alt tab like this, it’s very fast but you may get the windows mouse cursor appearing in the game (I think this issue is also with the default fullscreen mode). The quickest fix for me is to press the tilde key, which activates the console. It’s easier then going in the game menu, but it’s the same principle: pause the game. So toggle console, alt tab, un-toggle console. Should prevent the Windows mouse cursor from appearing. There are also possible solutions with AutoHotkey for the mouse cursor but I haven’t tried those yet.

Don’t know, just don’t alt+tab if the game malfunktions of you do Why pc games struggle with alttab and how to fix it.

Brain: an apparatus with which we think we think.

Do you have WinXP? And how long do you wait before you alt-tab back?

I haven’t tried in DD yet, but in BD you can alt-tab out pretty easily. But the thing is, you have to wait a bit, because your windows will have to load stuff into your memory from your harddrive, which takes time.

Some people have had sound, video or stability issues when alt-tabbing out of the game and back, but I don’t recall anyone else mentioning a black screen.

Can you hit Ctrl-Esc to bring up the start menu, or does the screen stay black as with selecting programs on the taskbar?

In the configuration program, you could try switching video modes, and see if that helps, or check for updated video drivers.

if i use the windows-button the start menu pop ups(never heard of control-esc before). if i use another driver(you mean the 4 ones you need to choose when you first wanna play the game right?) i get wrong colors, like the tomb(from the farao and cdv^) turns green where the light hits it. my mana bar is purple and so on. altough if i test it i have smoother resolution then the one i use now(strange, very strange)

P.S. does anybody knows a way to put your own music in dd? it kinda sucks if your fighting some creeps with a happy sound on the background.(i would like it more that when you start fighting some heavy music starts)

The music in DD is all in one large file, so there is no easy way to replace it, and no option to substitute music.

Someone thought control-escape was too complicated, so they added a Windows key to keyboards.
Have you tried hitting the Windows key, rather than alt-tab, to minimize the game?

There is a similar problem with weird colours that you could try the fix for, and see if that will let you use other video modes properly (yes, you understood correctly what I meant). However, even then the other video modes might not make any difference with alt-tabbing.

If you have the Windows ME/Nvidia graphics card “splotch problem,” which makes bizarre splotches of darkness and color appear indoors and at night, here’s the best cure:

Turn on your PC and leave it on for 45 minutes.

That’s it. Better even than putting “splotchproblem 1” in your config.lcl.

You can check your e-mail or whatever you want. Just make sure about 45 minutes goes by.

I read this suggestion on the previous forum and wanted to share it. It saved me a lot of headaches.

    Alt-Tab Problem

    Alt-Tab Problem

Post by The Gnome » Thu Oct 26, 2006 6:35 pm

Hi, I’ve just started playing the game again after a long while away. I patched up to the latest (1.8.0.4) and everything seems to be working fine. except.

I spend such a large amount of time in the game I often alt-tab out to check my email, or chat with someone, then alt-tab back in and resume playing.

The problem is every once in a while I get stuck at a black screen with nothing but the cursor. I can ctrl-alt-delete and nothing happens. Alt-tab more and nothing happens. Right click nothing. Alt-F4, nothing.

Out of frustration I turned my PC off with the power switch. This doesnt just drop the power on my machine, it initiates the Windows XP shutdown cycle. As the machine started to shut down, the black screen left and there was my desktop running normally, until the machine finished shutting down.

    Any ideas what this is?

Those launching Call of Duty: Vanguard for the first time on PC might encounter a sound bug where the game has no audio. The odd thing about this glitch is that the audio will return when players Alt+Tab to the desktop but stop working again when players bring the game back into focus. Fortunately, there’s a fix for this audio issue, though it might not be ideal for some users.

How to fix no audio sound bug in Call of Duty: Vanguard

Why pc games struggle with alttab and how to fix it

For those that find they have no sound in Call of Duty: Vanguard, except when they Alt+Tab to the desktop, there’s a quick and easy fix. For us, this bug occurred when the game relaunched after we went through the initial settings. Unfortunately, restarting the game, Battle.net, and the PC did nothing to alleviate it.

However, all players have to do to get audio back if they encounter this bug in Vanguard is to change the Display Mode from Fullscreen to Fullscreen Borderless. After applying the new setting, the sound should immediately return, and the game should function as expected.

We’re unsure as to why the Vanguard audio issue occurs. We tried changing the sound settings in the control panel to lock the game to a particular output, but the bug continued. If we had to guess, we’d say it’s some sort of driver issue. Fortunately, playing in Borderless Fullscreen seems to do the trick, and we’ve had no further problems with audio.

As far as launch issues go, this one is pretty mild, especially compared to what’s happened with previous Call of Duty titles. Typically, there are errors galore on launch night, so we’re happy to take this minor, fixable bug. It’s likely that it’ll be patched in the next driver release from AMD and NVIDIA, so those who prefer playing in Exclusive Fullscreen should be able to go back to that setting reasonably soon.

Now that players can actually enjoy Call of Duty: Vanguard, they can see which characters are available and the upcoming updates and DLC.

Works fine for me, this probably needs to go in the bugs section along with your system specs.

You literally have to turn off the PC.

This has happened to me a few times.

If I remember correctly it’s just after I’ve clicked end turn and the PC is either doing the auto save or it’s processing the AI moves. It doesn’t always happen, at least for me.

Only issue I get with Alt+Tab is if I go straight back too quickly it sometimes sets full screen to about 3/4 of the screen real estate and I have to Alt+Tab again to fix it. Probably just because the game isn’t running at desktop resolution.

I couldnt even get to Task Manager, was just a total lock.

It happens always when the game initiates loading/AI processing.

So if you have a bit slower / not so new computer, once you hit battle/exit battle, you need to wait until the bar will start loading, then you can safely alt-tab. if you do it immediately, while the game is allocating resources, it will freeze. Same goes, with the turn end. wait, till it will skip the first race on the board, and once it’s done, you can safely alt+tab. otherwise if you will hit end turn and alt+tab at the same time, it will freeze on resource allocation.

World of Warcraft seems particularly efficient at this. I can alt-tab to the desktop and back almost without losing a beat.

Probably the programers realized that people would keep alt-tabbing back and forth during flights or while waiting outside instances.

This is not possible in most other games though.

Some games just can’t do it. Others are fine, and of course, many are inbetween. It also depends on your hardware – nVidia cards seem to be ok at resuming an alt-tabbed games, while ATI cards often won’t do it at all.

Alt tab generally just gets me killed, but game does just fine. In Diablo II if you hold down alt it shows all the loot that is on the ground, and tab turns on/off the mini map, so couple times I have been looking at the loot, and realize, hey I forgot to turn on the mini map, and poof away to the desktop I go.

Other games I alt tab frequently to hop to the desktop and look up some info on a website or use some external helper program.

It basically depends on the game and the programming.

When you alt-tab or ctrl-alt-del out of a game, Windows immediately deactivates Direct3D access to the game – specifically, it destroys the Direct3D object passed to the game. Any attempt to render by the game program will result in an error.

Some games will crash as soon as their access to D3D is denied.

However, with more programming effort it is possible for a program to spot when D3D is no longer available and attempt to reset the D3D driver. However, even this is difficult because it means reloading all the meshes and textures. Some game engines are successfully able to reload everything and carry on – others may struggle and may forget to load every single texture or mesh, leading to strange artifacts or a black screen.

Why pc games struggle with alttab and how to fix it

Many League of Legends players have experienced an unusual bug that causes their game to randomly tab out. Such a distraction can easy shift the game to your opponents’ favour but luckily, a Reddit user named monosolo830 has seemingly found a temporary fix for the issue.

Exactly one week ago, we reported on an unknown bug that is causing a big number of League of Legends players to randomly tab out of the game.

We have experienced this problem ourselves and we have to say that while it may not be happening much too often – when it does, it can literally lose you the game. Luckily enough, thanks to a very helpful thread on Reddit, a temporary fix may have been found at last.

The steps you need to take to try and fix the issue are as follows:

    • First thing you have to do is time the tab-outs, keep a schedule of when they are happening (just look at the Windows clock when they happen and write down the time)
    • After the problem’s occurred a couple of times, open Windows Event Viewer (type Event Viewer in the search bar)
    • Double click on Custom view and then open Administrative events
    • On this list, find the Error/Warning that has appeared at the exact time when you experienced the problem
    • Open WindowsTask Scheduler (type Task Scheduler in the search bar)
    • Open Task Scheduler Library found on the left-hand side
    • Find the application that has been causing this issue (the one causing the error in the Event Viewer)
    • Right-click on it and in the drop-down menu choose Disable

Why pc games struggle with alttab and how to fix it

Fixing issues is just a Heimerding!

The steps written above should help resolve your issue, but in case you’re still stuck and your problem lies elsewhere, we suggest you at least switch to borderless in the game’s settings so those dreaded tab-out transitions become a bit smoother.

The following titles I’ve played have had excellent compatibility so far:

There is however a bug that I’ve encountered where if I press Alt-Tab to switch back and forth, sometimes the mouse is restricted to about 90° of rotation. This could go away if I press a specific key that triggers an action, but would obviously pose a problem in the middle of an in-game battle and break immersion.

I hit a similar issue in Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet. It is #1178.

    Kiltenth commented Aug 30, 2019 •

Having the exact same issue in World of Warships. Opening the scoreboard resets the cursor position and after closing it, it takes that view as a reference point and does the 90 degree thing again, midpoint being the point where you closed the scoreboard.

E : Apparently pressing Ctrl during a match to enable in-game mouse cursor also acts the same as opening scoreboard.

E.2 : For those who are trying to recreate the same problem, a quick alt-tab and back to the game don’t always break it. Alt-tabbing and using Google Chrome to browse internet for few seconds seems to trigger it almost always.

E.3 : Ok, so I thought of a way to maybe prevent this from happening, but I’m not sure if It works. I also don’t have the knowledge to program something like this. But my idea is : Can we write something like a macro to let’s say choose a reference point on screen, and whenever mouse moves, it makes the cursor to snap back to that point? And then we can make a toggle on/off button for that macro so whenever we are alt-tabbed we can toggle it off. This doesn’t fix the issue tho, it might just be a way around. I would like to try this if this is possible but as I said I don’t have enough knowledge program something like this.

    Kiltenth commented Aug 30, 2019 •

Just confirmed, same thing also happens with Just Cause 4, exact same thing.

E : I just came up with this idea but I don’t know how mouse pointer input behaves at screen borders. Let’s say cursor is at right border of screen. Does OS still get right cursor movement input? Or does it ignore like “cursor is at right border, no right movement input needed”? If It does ignore, maybe we can make a program to force it to keep getting inputs. If It doesn’t ignore, this idea will also not work then.

    Closing pending feedback.

You can’t perform that action at this time.

You signed in with another tab or window. Reload to refresh your session. You signed out in another tab or window. Reload to refresh your session.

Ok, someone else posted a topic on running a game in window mode and it reminded me of this annoyance.

Take Elite Force, you can NOT Alt+Tab out of that game, or Alt+F4 out either.

Is there any work around, or does anyone know why some games don’t allow it?

I don’t know, but I’ve noticed that all my Quake 3 based games don’t let you alt-tab out.

I was very happy to see key locks start showing up in games. Prevents me from popping to the desktop when I accidently brush against the windows key or an alt-tab during the heat of battle.

Programmer laziness. Well, not exactly laziness – there’s a lot that needs doing, and checking over, when you minimise a 3D window & restore it. It has a tendency to crash the game and quite possibly Windows if done badly.

hehe I can understand brushing up against the windows key but how do you accidently brush up against the alt and the tab key at the same time View image: /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I know what you mean though. I used to do this a lot in Diablo II I think when I would use the tab key to look at the minimap and the Alt key to highlight items (i think, it’s been awhile since I played) and then the game would minimize to desktop.

I think it’s both a good and a bad thing but all in all I would prefer to have the alt-tab ability.

Used to play Doom all the time through windows 95 for simpler networking setup.

Used alt to strafe all the time, and would pop tab quite often on new maps to get an idea of where I was. Other games had similar keymapping (quake?). I would agree that a selectable option whether or not to allow interruption of the game would be nice.

In a lot of these games you can alt+Enter and return the program to windowed mode. I’m pretty sure Q3A and Q3-engined games let you do this.

I never had a problem alt-tabbing out of Quake 3 games.

I know games like Dark Age of Camelot and EQ disable alt-tab to supposedly cut down on the types of cheats you could run.

The alt-tab thing seems to be driver related as well.

The most frustrating thing is trying to alt+tab in CS. It works, but then the sound cut out and you have to restart. I think this is implemented to discourage people from minimizing, and then running hacks after HLguard scans their hard drive. View image: /infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

It’s seems to me at least to be driver/game engine related. When I play a game optimized for Glide I could never Alt-Tab, especially on a Voodoo card.
I notice that many games optimized for OpenGL and DirectX on nVidia cards Alt-Tab without any issues.

For me, I found going back to the menu (not the console) and hitting “resume game” would reinitialize the sound engine 95% of the time, and I’d get my sound back.

See, when you suck at CS, like me, you need your sound so you can HEAR the awp that just capped you in the head. View image: /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Older 3dfx cards did not support windowed 3D.

something I’ve noticed is that for some games I can only alt-tab out if I have another window open at the same time (ie: I open a txt file or an ie window or whatever, then start the game, then I can alt-tab out, but if the game was the only application running then I won’t be able to alt-tab out)

JK2 doesn’t let you Alt+Tab either, which is annoying.
